This is taken from two separate sources which exhibit similar defects - A Midsummer Night's Dance (DGB Productions) and Summer Nights (KTS 042/043).

Lineage: MSND: Master Hi-Fi VHS off BBC Radio 1 Broadcast>WAV>CD>WAV (EAC Secure Mode)>FLAC Level 8
SN: Silver CD>EAC[secure/copy/test/offset 355]>WAV>mkwACT>SHN

Various people have identified 'Summer Nights' as the best available audio quality version of this concert, but rightly point out that it misses most of the song intros.
My intention initially was not to touch the KTS source, but simply to extract from the DGB files the missing intros and add those as extra tracks to 'Summer Nights' and torrent it as 'Summer Nights ++' or something similar.
With this in mind, I used shntool to uncompress the KTS source files and flac to uncompress the DGB source and loaded both, track by track, into Audacity 1.3.3 where I compared them looking for extra bits in MSND that were missing from Summer Nights.
Initially my intended approach was working and I thought I'd be finished quickly, but as I worked through the concert things started to go pear-shaped - Summer Nights was tracked quite unsympathetically with bits of some of the MSND intros in place, but split between tracks; Domino was split into two pieces with Pt. 2 listed as That’s All; there was a nasty click near the end of Old Medley; and both I Can’t Dance and Turn It On Again were weak in the left channel (ICD especially so).
This left me looking at doing a mix and match between the sources, but the click in Old Medley was also present on MSND, as was the left channel attenuation in I Can’t Dance.
Consequently I decided to actually do some re-tracking and (primitive) remastering. I stayed entirely with the better quality Summer Nights for the music but used Audacity to re-track all the separable intros as new. I fixed the click in Old Medley (at about 18:50 if anyone wants to check), and boosted the left channel for both I Can’t Dance and Turn It On Again.
Also, given that the artwork for Summer Nights was so disappointing - typos, errors and the copy I had wasn’t a great scan - I decided to run with the MSND artwork, but felt that I was making enough changes to the audio that I needed to identify this on the artwork. I did not, however, change the track listing on the CD artwork - this would have required more time than I have available. The songs remain as listed on the artwork, but the intros are not.
So, as far as my work is concerned, the audio lineage should now have these extra bits added:
SN: SHN>WAV>Audacity>WAV>FLAC[--best]
MSND: FLAC>WAV>Audacity>WAV>FLAC[--best]
I think the result is a clear improvement on both sources, I hope others think so too and enjoy the result.

I think this is a wonderful contribution to this blog. I love Phil Collins (his voice takes me back to my childhood). Thanks for this and your blog.
