Pink Floyd: Animal Instincts Rev. B 1977 FLAC (Must Have!)

OU: It was my discussions with Ron concerning the clicks, pops, and other glitches in AI (rev0) that led to my joining the team.
One of my earliest contributions was to deglitch AI and the first rev A edition was released.
As the years went by, a much lower generation source for this show emerged. My first knowledge of its existance was the RoIO Mr Pig. Although the SQ on Mr Pig was better than AI (you can hear many subtleties not detectable on AI revA), Mr Pig had other problems,like clipping, gaps during the tape flips, unbalanced, etc. So the thoughts of doing a rev B began.
That was two years ago...
About six months ago, we decided to do it. We got another source, a better source than Mr Pig. One that didn't have the clipping problem. Then Marc-Olivier
went to work.
Marc-Oliver spent quite sometime remastering this new source and expertly patching the tape flips. Then it was my turn.
So here it is! Animal Instincts rev B (HRV-CDR-014)

OU Comments: I received this show in DAT about 10 years ago from a very reliable source. The lineage on the DAT I have says "Unknown Mics>Master Reel>DAT so I'm pretty positive this is a master DAT clone.
The show is one of the best audience recordings I've heard. I know there are other sources from this show that are currently in circulation, the most recent one I'm aware of is Harvested REV A Version. I downloaded the Steel Breeze version and although it sounds good, to my ears it appears to run a tad slow when I compare these two files.
You be the judge.

This is an upgrade of the second disc of Harvested's BBC Archives 1970-1971 (HRV CDR 007) which features the complete 1971 performance. The previous version, which we created over 6 years ago, used the same sources as above except that "One of These Days" and "Echoes" were taken from broadcast transcription CDs that were sent to radio stations in the 1980's. Back then I foolishly assumed that this "new" CD format would yield better sonic results than the vinyl transcription LP that I had. Wrong!
This new version features a brand new 48kHz/24Bit transfer of the BBC vinyl (BBC Rock Hour) that was done at a professional recording studio and captured with ProTools. All pops, clicks, and imperfections were manually removed one-at-a-time. No EQing or NR was applied.
The BBC only have a mono version of this show in their archives which we used as a blueprint to reassemble this TRUE stereo version. Since "The Embryo" was never included on the transcription LPs, we used a 1st generation audio cassette recording from a WNEW broadcast and edited it into the show in its proper sequence. We did the same for the improv "Blues" jam which was also sourced from the WNEW broadcast.

Pink Floyd: The M-502 (1971 - Must Have!) .shn

let's try the mega again. (I tested it both on lix and link)

One of my Top 10 and a True Must-Have!
This is the holy grail of Pink Floyd recordings of indeterminate origin. I've been collection RoIOs since high school (when vinyl was king) and even then this was the one to get.
M-502 is the matrix number of the original 2-LP vinyl set that was made in Europe sometime in the (late?) 70's. Although there are many different versions of this show, all of them are sourced from a M-502 vinyl copy.
Some sound better than others, none of them sound anything like this. This 2-CDR set comes from a mint condition original LP, and has been beautifully remastered by the Digital Floyd Archives (some reports say that the original vinyl was made by MFSL before they became a specialty brand). Not only is this one of the best sounding recordings (especially of this era), this is one of the best vinyl remastering jobs I have ever heard.
The performance: Wow. This seems to be the only concert with the brass/choir on Atom Heart Mother where the brass section didn't make any mistakes! Also, the 18+ minute version of A Saucerful of Secrets is probably the definitive version of this song. Did I mention that this is my favorite version of Careful With That Axe, Eugene? Roger's doesn't scream, he roars. Hold on to your hat.

40 years after the last Pink Floyd studio session for the BBC, Harvested is proud to present this upgraded version of "BBC Archives 1967-1969".
This release required a lot of work and took more than 6 months to complete. The purpose was to present each track in the best possible quality. The process was long because it was performed on a track by track basis. For each song, we had to compare many different sources in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each version and then decide which one(s) to work on. The mastering work was done very carefully, trying to repair every flaw that could be corrected... and there were a lot (tape warble, crackles, drop-outs, incorrect speed, etc).
Instead of giving all the details for each single track (we want to avoid sterile debates about lineage and sources), we prefer the results to speak for itself. We think people should judge by their ears; listen to your sonically-preferred versions and compare them to the ones on this new Harvested release. We can confidently say that every track is - sonically speaking - an upgrade compared to the best previously circulating version, including the master transfer of the 25Jun68 session (which offered complete versions but from a damaged mastertape) and the recent Celestial Voices tracks from the 12May69 session.
We made the choice not to include the various DJ intros in order to focus on the music. There are some exceptions such as Reaction In G and Set The Controls from the 25Sep67 session, but for the remainder the DJ comments were considered too distracting and so we edited them out (e.g. the Tomorrow's World tracks). Also, it's important to note that all tracks are presented in true mono, the way they were mixed by the BBC (there's no "fake stereo" nor "sound expanding" effect).
This collection not only includes the sessions for BBC radio, but also studio sessions for BBC TV shows and documentaries making it more complete than the previous releases. The number of tracks is now 30; 14 are covering the 1967 sessions with Syd (on CD 1) and 16 are dedicated to the 1968-1969 era with David (on CD 2).
Cuesheets are included for those who like to burn CDRs with all the required text info.

Pink Floyd: Live In Venezia 1989 (Ex. MOB Remaster) FLAC

The source for this remaster was a superb stereo recording, taped from a German FM radio rebroadcast of the concert in Venezia. Dozens of hours were spent, in order to manually clean every little FM noise (crackles, slight buzz,...) and make this remaster as close as possible to the quality of an official release.
It has to be noted that the German radio rebroadcast cut the second half of Wish You Were Here. The missing portion was patched from a TV broadcast source. The intro and outro (fireworks) of the show were also taken from the TV broadcast, in order to make this recording more complete (the FM source ended rather abruptly after the last chord of Run Like Hell).

Pink Floyd: Meddled 1971 (.shn!) A TRUE Must Have!

One of the best Floyd ROIO's ever made, bar none.

Here it is, the infamous Meddled ROIO, feverishly sought after by Floyd fans wanting to hear what Meddler was supposed to sound like before being mistakenly edited to mono.
It came from an FM broadcast over the BBC in England. The stereo dimension adds so much to the recording, you can actually hear very distinctly what each band member is doing.
This ROIO is just an incredible listen from start to finish. The sound is amazing as is the performance of the Floyd. Fat Old Sun never sounded better. It is important to note, Embryo and Blues came from a different original source I believe. You can read all about this title (and Meddler) at the following URL:

Pink Floyd Top 10

I have been asked numerous times to compile a list of the Top 10 Pink Floyd boots.
Anyone who loves Floyd can appreciate the impossibleness of fulfilling such a wish accurately and to the satisfaction of all.
Questions that belabor the request include questions such as
- What time period in their muscianship do you include?
Early Floyd is clearly more experimental and psychadelic but not everyone enjoys this seemingly split personality in the band (sorry Syd).
- Is three man Floyd "Floyd"?
- Is Roger (or David for that matter) "Floyd"?
- Do you favor a fantastic recording that has captured a less-than-inspiring performance?
- Do you include rare concerts setlists although the tape grades poor?
- Do you include studio outtakes?
- How can this be objectively even considered?
- Etc.

With that said, and with absolute certainty that this will not please everyone. I begin my first choice with the one posted below (the Hopkins recording). In the future look for "Pink Floyd Top Ten Boots" in the artist column. I know what I want to include but I will make additions only after I have had the time to check links (or repost).
If Mike Millard's unreleased Floyd recordings ever surface then we may need to redo this ;)

For years, there have been two sources and many versions of this show available. Earlier in the PRRP series a new A/D conversion of the recording generally referred to as "source 2" was obtained directly from the taper Steve Hopkins and this was used to produce the remaster named PRRP038. In the fall of 2009, a taper named Dan Lampinski allowed his treasure chest of recordings to be digitized and released to the public via torrent. One of these tapes was his recording of this Boston Pink Floyd show on June 18th of 1975. His recording will probably be referred to as source 3 by the trade community. As with his other recordings, this Lampinski capture of the Pink Floyd performance was outstanding. With both recordings essentially complete and of outstanding quality, there was an opportunity to produce a remaster of each using each as a reference for the other.
The Hopkins recording had tape flips during applause so there was no missing music. The Lampinski recording had tape flips during the music so the Hopkins recording could be used to restore the missing segments of Lampinski. As with most cassette tape recordings from the 1970's, there was a speed error identified in each recording. This was not corrected in the original PRRP038. Using standard references, the speed error of each tape was more easily identified and corrected. The EQ or tonality of the recordings was compared and matched as much as possible. From the clarity of the two recordings it is assumed that both tapers used excellent equipment and were both in a good location for a good capture. When comparing the two tapes, similarities and differences were noted....

Talking can be heard in Hopkins that is not in Lampinski at 22 seconds after last beat of You've Gotta Be Crazy.
Fire crackers 6 seconds before Roger's introduction of Raving and Drooling has "Yea" in Hopkins but not Lampinski.
Roger's introduction of Raving and Drooling sounds a bit more distant in Hopkins than Lampinski.
During Speak to Me someone says "Jesus" and can be heard in Hopkins but not Lampinski.
Talking can be heard in R channel of Hopkins but not Lampinski at 4:06 of Any Colour you like.
Acoustics seem very similar so the two tapers were probably close to each other. Single claps at 10:54 of You Gotta Be Crazy are heard in both so both tapers were in a similar location.
"nice and easy" heard in both recordings during slow guitar segment of Money at 5:14.
Carrier signal at 15,700Hz in Hopkins source, but not in the Lampinski source so clearly different recordings.
The two recordings in a remastered form can now be appreciated for their similarities and differences. Both are available here. Each has a separate information file identifying the source, the track times and the general process used for the remastering.

The last night at Nassau Coliseum
A phenomenal audience recording from February 28, 1980 at the Nassau Coliseum. The level of clarity and detail of this source is nothing short of astonishing, especially considering this is a Pink Floyd show. All the instruments are captured just about perfectly with nice, solid bottom end and a good, crisp top end. This is definitely the best recording of the tour, aside from the official live release. Roger's introduction for "Run Like Hell" on this night was: "Do you like our pig? What? He's not a very nice pig, but he's a BIG PIG! This is a song for all the paranoids in the audience. It's called Run Like Hell. Home piggy, Home!" "Run Like Hell" has a rather interesting sounding bass line during the running sequence.
