Yes: Auckland 2012 (VG Aud) FLAC

yes-33
"We Finally Made It"
Vector Arena
Auckland, New Zealand
Sunday, April 1, 2012
Lower Bowl, Row S, Seat 215, to the right side and back. Only a half Arena show so this was still quite close.

Lineage: Zoom H1 (24/48) > Nero Wave-Editor (split tracks) > foobar2000 > flac L8
I have not done anything to the audio other than track splits.

This is the first ever NZ show for Yes (We Finally Made It) and the first with Jon Davison on vocals - and it was very good.
I first started listening to Yes over 20 years ago when I got Close to The Edge. My 10 year old son (who went to the concert also, and who you may hear talking) first started listening to them 3 weeks ago, he enjoyed it but it was a long day so he had a "wee snooze" during Heart of The Sunrise - he woke for the last few songs.

Set 1:
Yours Is No Disgrace
Tempus Fugit
Your Move/I See All Good People
Life on a film set
Steve solo - Solitaire/Clap
And You And I

Set 2:
Fly From Here
Wonderous Stories
Into the storm
Heart Of The Sunrise
Owner of a Lonely Heart
Starship Trooper

Encore:
Roundabout

The Band
Chris Squire
Steve Howe
Alan White
Geoff Downes
Jon Davison

Yes: New York 1977 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

The Lostbrook Tape Series Volume 121
YES MSG, NYC, NY 1977-08-07-front
The Yes party continued on our third and final night at Madison Square Garden. After "Parallels," you'll hear Jody say, "Nice Howe seats!" - a reference to our fourth row location directly in front of Steve Howe.
This was our fifth Yes concert in six days in two different cities. Reasonable people might have called it quits after this, but Reason took a vacation during the Summer of '77. In the end, we were punished for our gluttony. See Volume 122 for details.

04. Repair Mic bumps.
05. Attenuate some claps.
06. Attenuate some audience whistles.
07. Correct balance.

02 Remaster Source 2.
03. Sync sources.
04. Combine recordings and create full stereo image.
05. Correct phasing and center sound.
06. Balance power and amplitude.
07. Cover non-overlap sections with single source.
08. Track as continuous performance.

Notes: Recording begins with 90 seconds of Rogoff source then Lampinski source comes in to produce the stereo image.
Sound quality suggests that the Rogoff mics were hidden at the beginning. Sound is a bit muffled until 45 seconds into Parallels when it becomes more clear at which point the full quality of the stereo recording can be appreciated.
Taper says: "It was probably the point at which enough of the people in front of us sat down to get an unobstructed, on-axis view of the PA. I was using a mike stand made from one leg of a lightweight tripod. It was held in place by a photographer's clamp on the arm of the seat. The stand was connected to the clamp with a wingnut acting as a set screw."
At the end of Close To The Edge and just before the next song (Wonderous Stories) begins, both tapers changed/flipped tapes so there is a brief fade-out/fade-in.
Given the need to patch a 16 second tape flip segment of the Lampinski source with Rogoff source, at this point in the song Awaken, the stereo field converts to single-source and then reverts back to full stereo. Careful listening allows identification of this segment.
Sound characteristics would suggest that Rogoff was further back in the venue than Lampinski who was seated in section 2 row 11. Rogoff remembers being "dead center" but has no documentation of exact seat.

Yes: Milwaukee 1979 (VG+ Aud - Tooleman Remaster) FLAC

I was going to see this show but was called into work - I made the wrong choice ;)
howe
Mecca Arena, Milwaukee, WI - April 26, 1979
**Low-circulation alternate recording**
**Mastered by TheTooleMan, 4/2003**
Lineage: first-gen source -> TheTooleMan (Sound Forge, etc) -> audio CD -> EAC -> FLAC

One of the best performances and recordings of the 1979 tour.
The source tape of this excellent recording is superior to the one usually circulating, but it doesn't see the light of day as often. It was made with shotgun mics and has a very up-close sound. A small gap in "And You And I" is patched with the more common tape.
Play it loud and come on down!

Review posted on Forgotten Yesterdays by David Momberg:
The unofficial recording of this is incredible!!!! The band was so on that night-Rick was incredible, very high in the mix! Steve puts new spins on the solo at the end of SK, and throughout Time and a Word, The whole medley is incredible, including a 5 sec. section from Ritual, and Awaken is stunning!!!! My favorite of all the recordings from the Tourmato tours-and there are many good ones!!! You must check this out!!!

Yes: Quebec City 1979 (Soundboard) FLAC

This is the 2011 Tooleman Remaster!
CircusOfHeaven1
Le Colisee' de Quebec
Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
April 18, 1979
'Circus of Heaven'

** Liberated bootleg **
** Includes album art **
** Excellent soundboard recording **
** Remastered and pitch-corrected by TheTooleMan, July 2011 **

The review by Bill Glahn, posted on Forgotten Yesterdays and copied below, tells you most of what you want to know about this recording, though he makes a few incorrect assertions. Here's the rest of the story:
The performance is as good as the sound quality, which makes for a real treat.
I discovered I have two versions of this recording, one of which has small cuts during the ambience and some lead-in notes between songs. I used the most complete version to create this edition. Bill Glahn may have been referring to the other version in some of his comments.
Contrary to the review, I never found a cut or edit in Starship Trooper, but there was a fade-out and fade-in which disguised a tape flip during "The Fish" in the long medley. I cross-faded the two parts on the beat so the music never stops. This is a big improvement.
The front cover album art looks more like YesShows than Relayer.
Prof. Goody and I were in agreement about the pitch correction factor required for disk one of the set, but disk two was not as fast as disk one. Goody later agreed with my assessment: 49 cents lower for disk one, and 36 cents lower for disk two.
You'll find the drums and bass pack a bit more wallop in this version, and there's a little more ambience, too.
You can't go wrong with this one.

Review posted on Forgotten Yesterdays:
YES "CIRCUS OF HEAVEN" (Dynamite Studios DS94F059/60)
Some of our readers may recall a release from several years ago titled "Rehearsal Tales", a single CD containing a partial show from Quebec, April 18, 1979. Although the track listing had a couple of errors, the music contained on that disc represented the finest quality available of any yes concert on bootleg disc. In fact, it rivaled any official release in range, balance, and performance. The original release was very limited in numbers and it wasn't long before some of the bigger bootleg companies began making their own copies of this disc.
As the story goes, Yes was recording many of their 1979 shows on a mobile multi-track studio for release of an official live set to celebrate the groups ten year anniversary. The project was even announced to the press and then scrapped. Somehow (you know how these things happen!) a stereo mix-down from the quebec show found its way into the hands of a collector who unwittingly traded it to a bootlegger. Of course, as usually happens with bootlegs of outstanding quality, the bootlegger himself was bootlegged (at least 3 different times). All versions of this single disc were worth picking up, as little was lost in the transition from one CD to the next.
That is until now. Dynamite Studio, a Japanese outfit with reasonably good circulation in the US has finally released the complete show, making all the previously available single CD versions obsolete.
This double CD is nearly flawless! I say nearly because there is one minor edit towards the end of "Starship Trooper" which also appeared on the "Rehearsal Tales" disc. This distortion is said to be on the original master tape, and indeed it seems that is probably the case. The highs on this CD don't get any higher. The bottom end will rattle your walls, but, save for the mentioned segment, they will rattle your walls with perfect clarity. This set HAS to rate in the top 10 boots of all time. You can even hear the whale songs that Yes used between songs, for goodness sake. The audience is almost invisible in the mix. The ICE newsletter has occasionally coined the phrase "bootleg hall of fame" in their writings. If I had the opportunity to make my nominations for this mythical establishment, this would rank right up there with Led Zeppelin's "Jennings Farm Blues" and the Who's "From Lifehouse To Leeds" in importance. And it would take a back seat to no one in terms of sound quality.
"Relayer" artwork has been implemented on the front cover with a fabulous photo of the band and their stage set-up during a soundcheck on the back. Holy Cow, I think we've got a winner!

Yes: Louisville 1979 (Pre?-FM) FLAC

** A TooleMan Remaster **
digital_art
Radio station master! (I think)
**Low-circulation recording**
Lineage: radio station master reel (probably) -> audio CD's -> EAC -> TheTooleMan's tricks of the trade -> FLAC

OU: Don't let the ragged beginning of this recording fool you. Although it is missing the first two songs of the concert, the quality improves dramatically after several minutes, and starting with the long medley it sounds really great.
This seems to be a professional recording, with open mics mounted on stands - that's my best guess. Sounds like a lot of the monitor mix was picked up by the mics, as it was very heavy on the midrange frequencies. I took care of that in the master.
I wonder if this recording was made by the radio station that promoted the concert, WLRS. If so, maybe there's a better copy in their archives, or one that can be transferred more cleanly to the digital domain.
Enjoy!
TheTooleMan - July, 2011

From ForgottenYesterdays.com:
Date : Friday, April 13, 1979
City : Louisville, Kentucky, United States Of America
Venue : Freedom Hall Coliseum
Capacity : 19,800
Lineup :
Jon Anderson (Vocals)
Steve Howe (Guitars)
Chris Squire (Bass)
Rick Wakeman (Keyboards)
Alan White (Drums)

Tracks:
Future Times/Rejoice (joined in progress)
Circus Of Heaven
Time And A Word/Long Distance Runaround/Survival/The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)/Perpetual Change/Soon
Don't Kill The Whale
Clap
Starship Trooper
On The Silent Wings Of Freedom

I've Seen All Good People
WLRS Award Ceremony
Roundabout

The following paragraph, written by John Mock for Forgotten Yesterdays, explains the award ceremony track:
"Here's some trivia for you...the Tormato tour stop in Louisville on 4/13, 1979 was advertised as a 'big surprise' by the local heavyweight rock station, WLRS-102 FM as Yes was the 102nd concert promoted by WLRS... they attempted to get Pink Floyd as a surprise band to make a double bill....that fell through and their last stop they tried to pull out was free beer for the sold out Freedom Hall crowd, but the promoter would not go with that due to liability and under-age drinking concerns.... so the 102nd concert for WLRS turned out to be anti-climactic, just a normal Yes show that was POWERFUL....I need another fix of On the Silent Wings Of Freedom!"

ORIGINAL ART by Gromek
REMASTER SUMMARY: All work done at the 48/24 resolution, before downsampling. EQ work to reveal detail, as the audience heard and felt it. At least one very annoying local audience whistler has amplitude reduced by 1 dB at various points where no Yes signal occurs, but otherwise no attempts to alter band-crowd-venue sound balance. If
crowd sound as real and detailed as band sound isn't desired, please pass this by and stick to soundboards or industry releases.
No compression. Conservative noise reduction applied to compensate for unfavorable signal to noise ratio during quieter band moments and to further reveal midrange frequency detail, but some hiss has to be tolerated to avoid signal damage. Pitch- tempo was approximately 1% off, now corrected.
CONTRAST: Previously circulated as a "Highland" profit boot factory affair, made from a 2nd or more generation tape dub and a sonic mudslide. In B77 you have the original master tapes, transferred at 48/24 resolution, and carefully remastered with deep Yes familiarity.
You also have the complete source and lineage info.

NOTE FROM ONE OFFICIAL "BLIND" B80 PROJECT TEST GROUP LISTENER:
"1977 seemed to be the only year without at least one really outstanding Yes audience capture. The idea of a Balrog capture of a '77 show, therefore, was extremely enticing. Listening [nonetheless] to the raw version of AYAI was a very strange experience--the exact same performance, but without the "presence" and visceral excitement the mastering brought.
"The percussive metals [now] have that incredibly lifelike definition that seems to be one of Lestat’s specialties. And almost every emergence of Howe's pedal steel brought goosebumps. Frankly, I'm not sure that I've ever enjoyed a performance of AYAI this much- -while a great song, it is one of those perennials in Yes shows that rarely stands out as very special.  But something about this performance does
feel special--as if the whole "sunshiny Alpine" vibe of GFTO carries over to this song as well here. Yet, I didn't have that same sense when listening to the raw version. The mastering really allowed a level of majesty to come through in a way I wouldn't have thought possible.
"I really, really like what was done with this tape. [Yes] doesn't sound distant at all, and have a nice, warm tonality, with an almost holographic stereo image (particularly surprising given the taping position). The only real sonic impediment is that '77 swish/swirl effect, but that is far outweighed by the sonic pleasures on offer here. This is a HUGE improvement over the other '77 shows I've heard - I have a much greater sense of 'being there' than with any of those other shows. The pipe organ and pedal steel sounds are nothing short of otherworldly!
In any event, I've really been enjoying this, and can't wait for the entire release!"
- "NorthNYMark"
"I'm pleased to have once again had the chance to participate in the pre-torrenting review of this new Balrog/Lestat production. What I learned off the bat is that each recording reviewed must be evaluated on its own merits and not simply the pedigree attached to it. B78, B79 and B80 set the bar very high. So with this in mind, I fought my way past caveats listed and concentrated on the following:
"the astounding up front vocals of Jon the ever nimble fret work of Steve the great low end bass sounds of Chris the heroic drumming of Alan especially during Awaken when it seemed the Band was going off the rails, and especially: "the fact the full power of this band is captured by a gentleman sitting in the cheap seats of the Garden in 1977!!
"These facts, combined with Lestat's audio engineering magic, result in a recording that matches if not exceeds the best captures from the GFTO tour already circulating. So give a listen and see if you don't get goose bumps like I did. Go on- I dare you!" - "Jackstraw"

NOTES FROM THE PRODUCERS:
Almost without exception, circulating GFTO recordings shows have been hollow, muddy affairs, as if the gods of recording had determined that music of such magnificence should not be heard unfettered; the best a listener could hope for was that whistlers and clappers didn't overwhelm the recording, and the recordist didn't have a flip mid-Awaken.
Boston 1977 is that exception: bright, clean and absolutely MUST be considered strictly in context of ARs from the 1977 GOING FOR THE ONE Yes tour to be fully appreciated, especially by those already familiar with others by its taper from other years.
Despite many problems described below, B77’s dynamic range, detail, lifelike presence, and balance among GFTO tour ARs now stand nearly if not completely alone, and were enough to deliver sound after the restoration process far exceeding both taper’s and my expectations.
When I first analyzed the raw master I knew it could eventually offer more depth and detail than most GFTO shows in circulation, but due to a number of negatives both unique to it and universal to 1977 Yes audience captures even I dared not dream it would ever come out this well.
Even with the best tapers and equipment involved, due to sound system configuration and road engineer peculiarities GFTO tour arena ARs simply did not tape well from the audience. There are no exceptions. Some small venue captures from Europe appear to be better in many ways thanks to less ‘swallowing’ of PA output and less taper distance, but these in turn are represented in circulation either tape generations
removed or poorly mastered or both. Most audience captures from the 1970s remain rough. In Yes’ case the best ones from either side of 1977 beat even the best ones from 1977 for uniformly high sound quality.
B77 is an arena event, in an arena of legendarily bad acoustics. Its taper had a mediocre location relative to stage and sound system. The resulting problems of band to crowd volume ratio, greater interference with soundstage by crowd movement near mikes, seeming additional imbalance in PA output mix, and quieter Yesworks largely crossing a sonic ‘event horizon’ will be noticeable at times.
We at "BLG" actually like detailed crowd sound and consider it a critical part of the event reality, but at least one whistler right in the mikes is most irritating. Clapping also more prominent as expected. Neither over modulate or distort however, and are fairly confined between Yes numbers.
Local crowd movement effects the opening stanzas of "Parallels" and "Close to the Edge", where high frequencies suddenly become much more detailed about 30 seconds to 1 minute in, and what sounds like a left channel dropout during "AYAI" is another symptom.
"Wondrous Stories", "Turn of the Century" and softer parts of other pieces are the most disappointing moments in this and many other ARs of the tour thanks to the arena ‘event horizon’ effect. Excepting some of Alan White’s metals, much Yessound almost ‘disappears’ during these numbers and it’s aggravated by a couple of items described just below.
Some definition in Squire’s bass even during full-bore moments is also lost amidst related Boston Garden ‘boom’.
Happily these problems mitigated quite well, without altering natural PA output mix, with all Yes parts now more ‘upfront’ and in balance with each other than most GFTO tour offerings - but they’ll still be noticeable at times.
Add to them the universal GFTO tour problems of uneven PA amplitude and ‘swish/swirl’ [henceforth "SS"] - a hideous distortion of certain high frequencies afflicting Yes ARs from 1977 like no other year or tour after TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS [although it seems to have made a nasty comeback in 1980]. For the most part it involves certain percussive metals, but occasionally other things too. When it rears up it can be beyond aggravating.
SS cannot be edited out or effectively mitigated with any software, and despite so many outstandingly good features B77 has an unusually severe case of it. We’re nearly certain it results when already uneven, poorly aimed PA output is interfered with by crowd movement [even air movement] and interacts with microphone diaphragms in ways it seems not to with eardrums at the event. The more distant the taper
from PA system the worse it gets, but even front and center it can be bad.
Meanwhile, at least one Yes insider has reported the soundman in 1977 had high end hearing loss. This would explain at least in part many unpleasant GFTO tour anomalies, the plague of SS among them even though it was probably not noticed by actual audiences. It also easily explains why recordings from the tour including its YESSHOWS selections are so trebly, and PA volume frequently so uneven.
We then have added 1977 cassette tape hiss and a ‘tunnely’ property resulting from the particular venue and taping position. These could be mitigated thankfully, but only to a degree without damaging signal and badly altering natural sound capture properties [commonly attempted in other GFTO tour ARs with disastrous results].
Finally, Yes’ early GFTO performances were rough by Yes standards. Arrangements and improvisations were far smoother and more elegant by the time they hit Europe in November. In B77 - one of the earliest GFTO shows - we hear more than a few flubs and it seems the new material had a lot of developing to do onstage. Happily, like sound quality it turns out to have been a better performance than the raw
master let on - one of the major benefits of the remaster.

INDEPENDENT SOUND ANALYSIS:
Several trusted 'beta testers', including Barry, Gromek, NorthNYMark and others. Even with the especially severe SS every member of the project test group has told us they found B77 more detailed and realistic sounding than any other GFTO tour AR in their collections, and they are fanatical Yes collectors. My reaction as well, and though it’s unlikely to be universally shared it’s enough we expect most listeners will be ecstatic.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Many thanks to Yes, then and now.
Special thanks to Gromek for artwork [as always] so perfectly evocative of the show's energy and this effort.
Endless, endless thanks to Barry for another miraculous AR, the expertise, bravery and sacrifice of enjoyment it required.

NOTES FROM BARRY:
I went to four shows in 1977: Springfield 8/10, Boston twice (8/12 and 8/13?)*, and Providence 8/15. I taped the two for which I had the best seats (8/12 and 8/15) and was very lucky to catch Yours Is No Disgrace as the second encore in both. Along with Starship Trooper, it was Steve Howe at his improvisational peak.
As Lestat notes, the sound quality of the GFTO tour was poor in comparison to the "in the round" Tormato and Drama years that followed. The traditional arena arrangement with the stage at one end of the floor varied in sound quality depending on the building acoustics and may have been at its worst in the boomy old Boston
Garden.
For that reason, this recording has never had an authorized remaster before now. I made a few trade copies back in ‘77 but I was much more excited about the Providence 8/15 show, which was made from much better seats. I almost had a WBCN DJ convinced to play some Providence tracks on FM radio during a Yes marathon but, when I arrived at the station, discovered that they had no quarter-track reel-to-reel decks.
Providence was a PRRP release called "Musical Rainbows" that’s been well circulated by now. Both Providence and Boston have appeared in the form of the usual commercial bootleg garbage.
My goal in taping concerts has always been to achieve time travel. I want go back in time and relive musical experiences that were much too important to me to allow them to be heard once and lost forever. And I want the experience to be available to everyone who loves the music.
Anyone who has ever taped a concert knows that there's a price to pay, not only in terms of money spent and risk taken, but that making a good recording is work. You have to monitor the equipment and that diminishes your enjoyment of the show. Once again, I want to point out how much Lestat's remastering work makes up for that loss. Other than the absence of smoke in the air and the ambience of the old Boston
Garden, it's not much different from being there. I sincerely hope it provides the same experience for you.
* Not 100% sure about this date. I think it was a second show added on after the first one sold out. In any case, it’s not listed on Forgotten Yesterdays.

NOTES FROM GROMEK
Even though we’re warned at great length above of all the problems in all audience recordings from the GOING FOR THE ONE tour including this one, I’ll be surprised if this one does not go into history as one of the absolute best sounding live recordings to ever circulate among Yes fans! I even think it’s the best one to date to come out of the "BLG" treasure chest, especially considering the year and tour.
As a ‘beta tester’ it was an absolute pleasure to listen to this show. The sound is amazing, it’s clear and full bodied, like any live recording should sound. Certainly for a recording of its age, and from 1977!
As before I am happy and proud to be a part of the "BLG" team. "B" and "L" both have done an amazing job in bringing this recording to us all for our enjoyment."B" has taken all the risks in getting his equipment into the venue, but got away with it, and has produced a beautiful recording. "L" has done absolute wonders with the recording, and has made it sound even better.
I salute both, and hope they both will continue to do their voodoo that they both do so well, so they can bring pleasure to all who wish to hear a good recording of good music.
My part in this project is creating the cover art for this particular recording, and although I have to say that my part is the easiest part of the whole process and package, I am still very happy to do it, and I sincerely do hope you all will approve and enjoy what I created. I hope it gives you that little bit extra that you may need when listening to this wonderful recording!
That would make it all worth while for me, to create a bridge between the show, sound, the story behind it and the imagery on and in the cover art made.
So place this disc in you cd player, sit back and enjoy the ride. It will blow you away!

NOTES FROM RAMBLE ON JOE [project test listener, musician and writer in residence]
Boston 1977: The return of Rick Wakeman
From the beginning, Jon shows the strong assured voice which so moved Tony Wilson to write so favorably about the band back in 1968. As noted, there are some minor PA mix problems (mainly in the bass), though these improve through the first part of the show. This doesn’t really matter; from the opening strains of the "Firebird Suite", Barry’s tape provides the clear, clean sonics so painfully missing from practically every tape available of this tour. Despite his caveats about location and nearby whistlers, this is easily the best 1977 Yes capture to reach these ears - it’s tempting to quote from "Circus of Heaven":
"Was that something beautiful, amazing, wonderful, extraordinarily beautiful?"
To which the pragmatic Barry would respond: "Oh it was OK" - well aware that you simply can’t capture the best sound at the back of the hall (echo) near a wall (muddy bass). There’s the occasional tape flaw, which is only to be expected in a cassette three decades old.
The amazing thing is that he did in fact make an excellent capture which still sounds great today, and the performance itself more than compensates for the occasional technical issue.
As for the band themselves, their enthusiasm exceeds themselves: in "All Good People", it sounds like Steve is actually throwing in extra notes in those incredibly fast runs. Rick was of course busily up front right from the opening song, and puts a little middle-eastern edge into his CTTE solo. "Close to the Edge" is especially rewarding, as it opens with such fury it’s a wonder the band didn’t tear themselves apart. It’s nice to hear Alan so thoroughly in charge, alternately pushing & holding the band. This actually frees Chris to be even more inventive, and he adds little fills into CTTE I hadn’t noticed before.
But let’s get back to Jon - it’s easy to focus on such heavyweight instrumentalists, but how about the singer? In food, there’s a term from the Japanese, unami, which describes any given food at its peak, in its best presentation - the state in which it just couldn’t be any better.
For Jon’s voice, that’s arguably 1977: his voice was fully mature and strong, built up by a decade of performing, and not yet middle-aged; he takes on the high notes with grace and confidence, rarely showing any sign of strain. In addition, he had the GOING FOR THE ONE material (and band!), all of which showcased his voice beautifully.
The band seems to have realized this. Unlike every other tour, there are no solo instrumental spots -- all the performances are full band songs, and Jon takes the reins without hesitation, song after song. By comparison, the band themselves are still feeling out the material at this early date; "Going for the One" isn’t performed, the so-called "Flight Jam" leading into "Awaken" would become more focused later in the tour, and "Awaken" itself isn’t quite as well realized as we need it to be.
"Starship Trooper" begins to make up for this, as Rick reminds us again why he was wanted back in the band: one minute he’s stodgily serious, the next as playful as a kid with a new synthesizer. Sure I wish Steve’s guitar was louder, but that doesn’t have to spoil our pleasure in a perfectly good "Trooper" replete with synth explosions - especially when that’s followed by a "Roundabout" performed with real
vigor. Check out Steve’s feedback swells during the quiet part, and Rick’s organ solo - all to resolve on a resoundingly triumphant final chord -- really good stuff!
Had they left it there, we’d be content to call it a strong & complete show, but the band pulls a final surprise by playing a second encore - a rarity for any band. But this is Yes, and they’ve already played all their usual encore material - what could they play? No easy way out here, folks: two hours into the show, and the band tackles "Yours Is No Disgrace" with no sign of fatigue: Steve burns through his solo,
and Jon still sings like he has energy and range to spare. What a night for Boston; what a night for Yes; what a treat for the fans in attendance!
And now, thanks to Balrog and Lestat, we finally have an audience capture of a show from the GOING FOR THE ONE tour approaching the quality of "B78" and "B79". Even a brief exposure may result in an unwillingness to listen to other tapes from this tour; for that, we apologize, and note that it’s an unavoidable (if not entirely
unintended) consequence. We think it’s a risk worth taking; we hope you think so too.

Please share freely but losslessly, and never, EVER even THINK of selling for any sum anywhere. Reseed or redistribute this recording in its complete and original form only. Should we become aware of an incomplete reseed or distribution, we will publicly discredit the party responsible.
On that note, be also vigilant against for-profit `boot factory' ripoffs. We've seen this done with our work already. While flattering they'd covet it on the one hand, the dishonesty of it and idea of anyone spending good money for what can be had freely are both infuriating. Last time it happened Gromek's fabulous art was dumped in favor of the usual boot factory crap, and none of the lineage/process info provided here was included in the ripoff either. Truly criminal - intellectually as much as legally.

Going for the One Tour
Pavillon de Paris
Paris, France
December 6, 1977
Lineage: audience -> audio cd -> Sound Forge -> FLAC

OU: this is THE ULTIMATE REMASTER! And now we've arrived at the end of the tour, partying with Yes in the City of Light!
This recording is nothing short of EXCELLENT! There are nuances in the music that you cannot hear in lesser-quality recordings. Synthesizer patches and guitar effects are awesomely clear. You can even appreciate the flanging effect on the voices singing the "counter-lyrics" in "And You And I" (you know, "Coins and crosses..."). This kind of quality is rare in a 30-year-old tape.
I received this recording in a trade in 2002. It may not be the same version that Highland released, and which Lestat used for his recent remaster. From his description of the audio quality of the Highland recording, this is apparently much better!
Relayerman provided a lot of detail about what he did to enhance the recording of the first night in Paris. Since I did some of the audio work on this recording in 2002, I don't have the same detailed records of everything that was done. The original recording ran slow, so the pitch was flat. I corrected the pitch and balanced the stereo channels, each of which had somewhat different frequency response. Before I was all done, I applied Sonic Foundry (now Sony) Acoustic Mirror, which gives the recording a wider stereo field.
There is a patch in the last 90 seconds of Awaken which I think was in the original recording I received in trade. It's not bad, and it's probably from another average quality recording of the same performance. Relayerman says he has two versions of this show, but I have not confirmed with him whether both have this patch. I worked with the pitch and EQ of the patch to help it blend with the rest of the recording.
Overall, this is one of the most satisfying remastering projects I've undertaken, mostly thanks to the quality of the original recording. If I had deliberately saved the best for last, I still would have chosen this recording and this show.

NOTES FROM LESTAT: Many, many thanks to Mr. Lampinski, to djscomics and to Mr. Morstadt for their efforts in unearthing what may be the best quality AR of Yes from 1974 and bringing it to us.
Like everyone, I was floored when I heard this recording for the first time. Even raw it surpasses every other pre-1977 Yes AR I’m aware of for sound quality. Taper Dan’s achievement here is unique and speaks for itself.
Even the best raw AR masters made with the best, skill equipment, and media available nearly always have not just flaws but hidden strengths undetectable to most. This one makes a typical example, having some largely correctable weaknesses but more importantly a broad spectrum of detail nearly inaudible in its raw form.
When I upload original sources I make sure such things are dealt with in advance. What was possible with this recording has now been fully attained, and provides its own best illustration of why. It also generated this response from a participant in the remaster ‘beta test’, an integral part of the process -
"I just finished listening to the remastered samples over my main rig, and just did another comparison between the remastered and raw versions on my computer. As always, you have done very fine work on what was already an astounding audience capture for 1974: everything sounds considerably crisper and more defined, and you seem to have tamed a certain upper midrange harshness, making for a more pleasant
listen overall. For me, a standout moment is Howe's solo in "Sound Chaser"-- while listening, I forgot for a moment that I was not right there in the hall. The degree of holographic spatial realism you helped bring out in this tape is extraordinary (and one of the qualities I most appreciate in your mastering). "Close to the Edge" was a joy as well, and your mastering helped bring out the amazing detail in Squire's bass accompaniment at the end of "I Get Up, I Get Down," which adds an element of drama to the climax not found on the studio version.
"Particularly with your careful mastering, this tape is a real holy grail for Yes collectors like myself, who count the 1974 Relayer tour as possibly the peak of Yes live performances. The only other documents of that tour I've heard that even approach this are the Pre-FM version of the same show (which was oddly mixed, had a very harsh midrange, and was missing "Ritual"), and the (in)famous Baton Rouge recording. This release may very well sit at the very top of the heap now in terms of overall quality".
The raw master had a number of issues.
1] Pitch and tempo were both off [fast].
2] Low frequencies with poor definition or nearly absent - a common drawback of condenser microphones but Dan’s was top shelf and it got more than most. They still desperately needed ‘liberation’, as did frequencies in every other part of the spectrum except the very uppermost highs occurring prior to mid-Ritual.
3] Some quite noticeable midrange distortion occurs at different points in the raw upload, especially during Close to the Edge and Ritual. Most likely it’s in the master cassettes and a consequence of age - even well-cared for Maxells don’t last forever - although it may also be a condenser mike issue.
4] A jolting change in sound properties occurs during Ritual, at about 16:45 and constant through Roundabout. It seems likely to have started with a tape flip and probably involves a bias or Dolby switch on the record deck, or possibly a tape manufacture defect. Whatever the cause, symptoms include a severe high frequency dropout, an increase in at least one type of distortion [‘swish’] and weirdly but on the upside better low frequency definition.
All of these mitigated well except the distortion, which can only be treated with signal-damaging compression and not very effectively. While now more detailed along with more desirable sound, it does not overwhelm by any means. The dynamic range transition in Ritual-Roundabout is treated with slightly different EQ settings and less noticeable, with high frequency definition better matching the rest of the recording.
The recording’s especially miraculous hidden tones in several frequencies, including the lows, are now much more apparent. As one example, different cymbal types can now be easily discerned where in the raw recording they’re nearly indistinguishable from each other despite the absolutely fantastic uppermost frequencies [which needed
no work at all]. Other Yessounds, from nonmetal percussion to guitars to keyboards to voices, now have considerably more identity, presence, and detail in all their tones
All work was done at the 24/96 resolution, before downsampling. EQ work designed to reveal detail, as the audience heard and felt it. No attempts to alter band-crowd-venue sound balance. If crowd sound as real and detailed as band sound isn't desired, please pass this by and stick to soundboards or industry releases. No compression or noise reduction.
- Lestat, July 2009

NOTES FROM BARRY (BALROG): Up until the discovery of the Lampinksi tape, the only known audience recording of this show was the one I made with a mono recorder from
the back of the Boston Garden. Once I had a copy of the FM broadcast, I copied the "Missing Ritual," the only song not included in the broadcast, to a reel-to-reel deck. That tape, along with the master tapes, was stored at a friend's house and lost for many years.
Over the years, I received many anxious requests from people wanting to hear the "Missing Ritual" no matter how bad it might be.
Eventually, my friend dug out the reel. I digitized it and shared the raw transfer with everyone who had inquired about it.
I intended to combine Ritual with the FM broadcast to create the first-ever complete concert recording. So I asked every serious Yes trader I could find for the best source of the pro recording. I also tried to find someone with expertise willing to remaster Ritual.
I eventually received 22 different sources and narrowed them down to a "short list" of the five best. I planned to determine the winner using a blind comparison test.
However, no one remastered Ritual. Even Shaun Toole (Tooleman), the best known Yes remastering expert turned it down. Once everyone had heard the recording, it was no longer the famous "Missing Ritual." It was just another audience tape from 1974. Everyone lost interest in the project, including myself. So it sat on the shelf until a few months ago.
What brought it back to life was Lestat's willingness to do the remaster. The sound quality turned out much better than I had hoped. We were planning to upload the project to Dime. But now that the Lampinski recording has surfaced, the "Missing Ritual" project is obviously never going to see the light of day. The Lampinski is vastly superior to my audience recording and I consider it to be superior to
the professional recording made for the FM broadcast.
Some of what I had written for the "Missing Ritual" project may still be of interest. So here's an edited version.
Yes concerts have always had a very special significance in my life and 12/11/74 was my first one. It was also one of the first concerts that I taped from the audience, not knowing that the performance was being professionally recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a nationally syndicated radio program of live concert performances.
The Relayer album was released on December 5, 1974 less than one week before the concert and roughly a month into the tour. No one in the audience knew the album very well, which was quite unfortunate. Like Tales From Topographic Oceans, the songs on Relayer are much too intense and complex to fully appreciate on the first listen.
Similarly, no one knew how the songs from the other Yes albums would sound with new band member Patrick Moraz on keyboards. I had been listening to Refugee, the album that he had recorded with Brian Davidson and Lee Jackson (formerly of The Nice) for several weeks and knew that Moraz had way too much talent and style of his own to simply fill in for Rick Wakeman.
Hearing the familiar Firebird Suite opening climax into Sound Chaser instead of the anticipated Siberian Khatru might have surprised some of the audience, but no one who was there could have possibly been disappointed with the tight but excellent performance. Make sure to read the concert page on Forgotten Yesterdays.
The original two-part broadcast, hosted by Bill Minkin, in "SQ Matrix" quadraphonic sound was aired only six weeks after the concert. It came as a complete surprise to those who had been there as nothing had been said about it being recorded for an FM broadcast.
SQ Matrix was one of several early matrix schemes from the quadraphonic era. The matrix concept was similar to today's surround sound technologies and SQ is considered by some to be the origin of Dolby Pro Logic.
The broadcast included the entire Yes concert except for one song: Ritual. It also included the entire insipid opening set by Gryphon.
That decision, to omit part of the Yes concert in favor of the entire Gryphon set, has angered countless Yes fans for more than three decades, none more than myself.
The original broadcast and subsequent rebroadcasts have been used as the source of countless collector and commercial "pirate" bootleg cassettes, LPs, and CDs. I have collected images of 21 different pieces of cover art and I'm sure there have been many more. Some contain the full setlist (except Ritual of course) and some are
partial. Some of these bootlegs claim to be from radio station (pre-FM) tapes or LPs. Based on the lack of compression, it's possible that some of these bootlegs are actually pre-FM tapes.

The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 7

OU: I was in the middle of a Yes marathon. This was my fourth Yes/Donovan concert in five days, and the second of three nights at Madison Square Garden. I sat in the fourth row directly in front of Jon Anderson, surrounded by my closest friends. Al brought a good camera with him and we took plenty of pictures. The set list was the same, so I was able to nail the tape-flips. Join us as we continue our Yes adventure
in the summer of 77.

Taper's Story: I first became enchanted by live performances after talking my way into the taping of Dick Cavett’s Woodstock Show on August 18, 1969 at WABC studios in New York. This was quite an accomplishment for an eleven-year-old without a ticket. My first major concert was The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden on July 25, 1972. I was so impressed with the enormity of that event that I jumped at the chance to acquire some of the vinyl bootlegs from the Exiles on Main Street tour. These recordings surely planted a seed in my mind, but unfortunately, I waited over 25 concerts before attempting my first recording in late 1975. Over the next ten years, I recorded approximately 125 concerts in the New York City area. In 1985, I moved to Virginia and recorded sporadically, accumulating a few dozen shows in the Washington DC area over the next 15 years.
My motive for taping has always been selfish. I simply wanted to enjoy the performances over and over again. I didn’t realize that I was recording both musical and personal history or that I was witnessing the high-water mark of progressive music. I thought it would last forever, but in the back of my mind, I must have known that I had something special. With one or two exceptions that I later regretted, I refused to trade tapes. Very few friends were ever given copies. I have
never considered selling them – I have too much respect for the artists. I protected my tapes for decades, never knowing what to do with them as they sat dormant on a shelf. In 2010, I found the time to make digital transfers of my tapes and rediscovered the amazing moments I had recorded. I also found an answer: I needed to get these tapes to my friends that were with me, whose history I had also captured, and to others who would appreciate this collection.
My equipment was low-tech but yielded surprisingly good results. Almost all of my recordings prior to 1989 were made with the built-in condenser mic on a Sanyo desktop cassette recorder (model unknown).
When the unit began to fail in 1977, I replaced it with what I thought was a better recorder, but the tapes were distorted. I quickly purchased a new Sanyo that was identical to my first and never again attempted an upgrade. In 1989, I bought a smaller, Walkman-type unit – a Panasonic RX-SR29, which performed nicely with its condenser mic. I was never interested in producing soundboard-quality tapes, and was almost always happy with my “souvenirs.” I used TDK tapes initially, then Maxell.
Recording a concert was always an adventure. Through trial and error, I arrived at the following procedure: To get past the ticket-takers, I wore loose pants and stuffed the recorder down the front where the odds of being frisked were minimal. I wore a loose t-shirt or sweatshirt to cover the “bulge” and held my breath. The
dead batteries and cheap tape I kept in the recorder were occasionally confiscated, but my friends were already inside with the real supplies. Once inside, I would meet my friends and exchange the batteries and tape. We had excellent seats for many concerts, but that put us in close proximity to ushers and stage security. We needed to be in a constant state of vigilance, and we were also busy with the timing of the tape-flips. I would occasionally take photographs with a cheap camera, which gave me additional equipment to juggle. Without fail, someone in my row would be in the wrong seat, and an usher would have to sort it out. It was all I could do to keep the recorder hidden without covering the microphone. It was always chaotic, but the reward was great as we listened to the concert again on the way home.
I’m indebted to all those who assisted and inspired me along the way: Gary, Steve, and Paul/Rich, Rob, and Paul/John, Sue, Al, and Rich/Jody, Laurie, Danny, and Martha/Geri and Allison/Howie and Linda/Kathryn. Thanks to Mike for all of his efforts. Most of all, thanks to my family – K, M, E, and B – for their support and patience.
You are cordially invited to enjoy these time capsules. There is always room for one more in our row, but if we are loud or talkative, please don’t judge us too harshly. We were swept away by the magic of the moment, and we hope you will be too.

OU: I forgot how nice this was until I finally listened to it. Absolutely terrific quality and the show must have been a real treat! A++++ soundwise.
The Union tour was very good indeed and I straongly disagreed with those - Bill Bruford among others - who underrated that tour. I interviewed Alan White in Milano a few months after this show (with Jon Anderson making funny jokes to him while he was speaking) and he seemed very pleased with the result and having a very good time. This document is almost 20 years old already! enjoy!
