SGT. Page's Badgeholders Club Band Tarantura 2000 - TCD-YUZUKI-3 - 3CD
June 23, 1977 The Forum - Los Angeles, CA. Audio: 9+/9.5 EXCELLENT
This show has been released numerous times over the years and instead of giving a play by play of what's happening on-stage, I am going to instead only offer my comments on the source tape mix and Tarantura's handling of the mastering. If you want the detailed overview of this concert, please reference my comments on the TDOLZ version, For Badgeholders Only, and then come back here. The overall audio is excellent. The main chunk of source tape used here is outstanding - much cleaner, crisper and fuller than the TDOLZ version with little tape hiss and more bottom end. It could very well give the Eddie tape a run for it's money. This is the same source tape used on the TDOLZ For Badgeholders Only set. The flip side of the tweaking of the sound is that some of the higher range portions of the tape begin to distort and break under the equalization. It's not as bad as it sounds but it is worth mentioning. I really noticed this during the guitar solo in Over The Hills And Far Away. There is a tape swap after Over The Hills And Far Away that is executed perfectly with only the slightest change in tape depth and a two second section of tape that has an echo effect on the audience cheer that is the result of the two source tapes being faded in/out at the same time but a fraction off on the timing (it's an old club DJ trick). The tape cut in TDOLZ's Since I've Been Loving You has been fixed in this release and is patched with the alternate source. The mysterious "heartbeat" found on the TDOLZ set during No Quarter is thankfully absent here. It's really hard to comprehend that this is the same source tape issued by TDOLZ as the differences in sound and completeness are night and day. Ten Years Gone features the splice in the solo just prior to the "Do the eyes not sparkle" lyric. The Stomp also features the familiar tape gaps nicely filled. Trampled Underfoot features a 4 second patch of tape at 03:50 that has an odd metallic sounding echo that disappears almost as fast at it started. There is a glitch in the tape at 06:09 in Achilles Last Stand. A split second of tape overlap is what it sounds like. There seems to be another one of these at the 08:39 stamp as well. The Millard tape recorder ripple becomes noticeable on the 3rd disc - especially during Stairway To Heaven - it's like a low pulsing flutter. This is also very noticeable on Millard's tape used by Empress Valley for Deep Striker. I do not know what causes it but it must be due to something with his recorder. The artwork and packaging I have a mixed opinion of. I bought the promotional prototype edition that is limited to 50 copies and I really like the shuffle pack format that this set came in. I am undecided on the whole The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's parody sleeve design, but I am absolutely aghast at the piss poor psychedelic rainbow backgrounds and the (at times) goofy graphics and designs. Empress Valley is much more refined and mature on their graphics design and they ooze class. This almost borders on tacky but it's tolerable due to the cool shuffle pack format I'm going to take the stance that if all I can bitch about is the goofy artwork, it's a winner - especially when one takes into consideration this label's reputation for molesting their source tapes. The only real complaint I have is that the tracks were split up a bit too much for my liking (ie we don't need to split The Rover Intro into Sick Again and make it 2 separate tracks. Thankfully CoolMixMan and Black Dog Studios are no longer a part of this label. Perhaps we can now expect quality product from this label. One can only hope. In my opinion, this set is highly recommended and is the definitive commercial version of this show. WOW! I can't believe I actually said that about a Tarantura 2000 release!
