The Band: The Unreleased Woodstock 1969 (Soundboard Master) FLAC

a little "bonus" for the day!
Copy of 1969-08-17 levon helm
Woodstock Festival - Max Yasgur's Farm Field - Bethel, N.Y. August 17, 1969 [Day 3 Sunday]
Main Stage [took the stage aprox. 10:00 pm after Ten Years After]
Complete Show
Source: Master Soundboard Reel

Band Members
Robbie Robertson - acoustic and electric guitars & vocals
Rick Danko - bass & vocals
Levon Helm - drums, mandolin & vocals
Garth Hudson - organ & saxaphone
Richard Manuel - piano, drums & vocals

Fixes by happy jack
track 5 removed pop at 3:00
track 10 softened mic bump at 4:36 and smoothed out abrupt stop (and/or pause button was hit) of recording during the encore applause and then started to record again before encore song. NO muisc was lost

Show & Source Notes: This is the complete show. This is a continuous running recording of the entire show with all songs included. This verifies the songs played and the order the songs were played in. Also this setlist is confirmed in Levon Helm's book "This Wheel's On Fire".
The only time it seems the recording was stopped or paused was at the end of track 10 before the encore song durring the applause then started back up. This source is the best sounding undedited raw source around.
This is the only raw source of this show that is complete. The two that are the closest are
1) At Woodstock [Wilcock Records 2000] - sourced from three different sources, missing 2 songs and not in the correct order
2) At Woodstock [Home(r) Entertainment Network Germany HEN106 2004) - still missing one song
I thought i would bring this to light and share being that i have never seen this shared before and if it has i never seen this one that i have had for years shared. This was given to me from a special friend who is no longer with us and i am sure he would like to see more people enjoy this. He used to play this for me all the time and say life just seems simple when you here these guys play this music. He gave me two copies one to preserve and one to play all the time. This is an eac (sercure) from the cdr i never played. I know he was at this festival and had alot of good connections and this was lineage he gave me.

MIA: Something There is About You, Like a Rolling Stone, Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)

On one interesting shelf in the JEMS archives are tapes of Dylan's 1974 tour with the Band. Our own S taped the Seattle shows and then drove to Oakland (on a gasless Sunday, he'll remind you, as this was in the middle of the energy crisis) to record both sets there. After the tour completed, S took out classified ad (which I hope to find some day) in Rolling Stone magazine looking to trade tapes of the tour with others who recorded.
He didn't collect the entire tour, but he did track down a handful of shows on reel to reel, including this late set from Houston. Given when and how it was obtained, and what S has told me over the years, he got these tapes from people who recorded the shows themselves, so there's a strong reason to believe this show is legitimately second generation. I assume second generation because the cassette may have been moved to a safety reel, of which this is a copy. Given the duration, it appears the taper was on cassette (gear unknown) and captured just north of 90 mins of the show, conserving tape, as was often the case in those days, by pausing between songs.
As such many of these tracks are joined a second or two in progress, but you still come away with feeling of hearing the entire show. As the recent posts of '74 tapes has made clear, this tour wasn't consistently well recorded and there are several shows for which the only circulating recordings are often described as passable, listenable or worse. I would call this one very listenable. Not amazing, but based on input from a few tour experts, better than we have had before. Samples provided. I think it is in upgrade and I've been working on it for some time, so the release with the rest of the '74 tour flood is good timing.
Also, unlike the circulating recordings from Houston per Lossless Bob (and this source is likely to be the same as something previously circulated, just lower gen and possible more complete), the full Band set is here. What's not here is the encore.
JEMS has the afternoon show on a separate reel from what appears to be the same taper. That will come down the road if folks like this source. Please let me know as these old reels are finicky and I want to make sure people care given the effort it takes.

Bob Dylan and The Band: Boston 1974 (Joe Maloney Master) FLAC

Bob_Dylan_and_The_Band_-_1974
Boston Gardens, Boston
Massachusetts
14 January 1974 (Afternoon)

Lineage: Source: AUD > MC (Joe Maloney) > shn by Jamie Salerno. Recorded on a Sony TC-110A, using the built-in microphone. Original cassettes were transferred to a Mac DAW using a Denon DR-M10HR. The analog signal was first run through: a) a SAE 2800 parametric equalizer to bump the highs slightly and to remove "room boom" at around 80 MHz; & b) a Phase Linear Autocorrelator to remove hiss & expand the signal (the TC-110A did not have controls for recording; the recorder, designed for dictation, compressed the signal and recorded at a fixed level). Transferred to the Mac using a MOTU 896. Bias Deck used to splice tape flips & even out volume levels. Bias Peak used to transfer SDII files to WAV files for shn compression. Shntool used to fix SBEs. Converted to Flac for consistency with this set. [from lk aud set]

Review: This Japanese CD combines two excellent quality, superbly mixed soundboard recordings from the Feb.11, 1974 early and late shows, and includes tracks performed by The Band as well. The performance, while fairly standard for 1974 in terms of the setlist, is excellent in execution. A surprisingly enjoyable set and, as with Paint The Daytime Black, a far better representation of 1974 than the official Before The Flood album.

The new Last Waltz booklet indicates the DC show date was actually 16 August 1976 (see page 1 of the booklet). The PreFM copy that I have has this setlist, which is not the entire show, but everything that King Biscuit broadcast (from PreFM sources including reels, which is how the Biscuit used to get sent out)
I write:
However this date is known to be incorrect, the recording was most likely made on 17 July 1976

Bob Dylan & The Band: Isle Of Wight 1969

Live at Woodside Bay, Near Ryde, Isle Of Wight, England, August 31, 1969. An audience reel-to-reel recording. Very good quality.

Audience source

On the cusp of the '70s, rock music was still a bubbly mixture of styles and ideas. You could record anything and there would be an audience and more importantly a record label willing to put it out.

Bob Dylan and The Band fired off Music From Big Pink and signalled a return to the "invisible republic" of the past when everything was simpler. This album more than any reportedly energised and inspired English musicians like Eric Clapton and George Harrison to look Westward and backwards.

Instead of rocking out like they did in 1966, Dylan and The Band slowed things into a country square dance. No exhortations to "play ****in' loud" instead, steel guitars, accordians and a crooning, bleating Dylan took to the stage and, by all accounts, only a selected enlightened few were mesmerised. Mostly, the show was considered under-rehearsed.

Incredibly, this performance was the first time Dylan stepped on stage after the motorcycle accident. Some were expecting the Second Coming as his appearance boosted attendence. On hand for this show was rock's royalty, The Beatles, two Stones, The Who, Free, Eric Clapton and, in the audience, a young Elton John.

This was the year the Beatles were to release Abbey Road, all "special effects" and stylish, the year Led Zeppelin II was launched and proto-heavy metal birthed. Instead, 100,000 fans at the Isle of Wight were treated to the countrified and loosely-played Like A Rolling Stone.

So how did it feel?

Now for the first time you can hear the almost-complete show from an astonishingly clear audience recording. The origin of this audience reel to reel tape was keithdylan who bought the master copy from a dealer/fan and decided to share it, warts and all on the net at the Hunger City site. Later it was mastered and artwork done by JTT, around October 2007. This cleaned up version deleted gaps, added fades and other little touches and was shared by eddiethecat. This is the cleaned up version. A big thanks for their generosity.

After the show, Dylan and the celebrities retired to a party where The Beatles played an acetate of their to-be-released Abbey Road. No one recorded Bob Dylan's reaction.
