This is as close as you'll ever get the high speed reel master source. AJD owns the original PCM transfer from those reels and the reels have since been destroyed by fire. This originally came from Bill Graham's vault. The original PCM is the now definitive source, but was not widely circulating until now. This is the most complete tape circulated in this quality to date.
PCM was used before DAT machines were invented and were the first means of digital recording. An A/D signal converter was used to to encode analog audio from tape reels to (Sony recommended) BETAMAX tapes in a standard BETA machine. A PCM encoder, coupled to a VCR, enables you to record digital audio as if it was an ordinary video signal. The device also extracts the digital audio message from the video signal, the other way round, for playback.
This PCM was likely made with either the PCM-1 (1977) or the PCM-F1 (1981).
What you are receiving is a direct digital transfer done by the owner of the PCM recording, AJD, a professional audio guru. The PCM machine used for the transfer is a SONY PCM-601ESD, originally sold in 1984-1985. The PCM-601ESD had the important advantages of S/PDIF digital I/O and adjustable tracking and VCR head-matching circuits and was the best digital storage technology available at the time.
These units are pretty hard to come by these days.
I took his transfer and mastered it for release, then encoded to FLAC8. Notice it it not a "remaster" since was never actually mastered, just transferred from old media to new as the technology progressed.
For those who would ask:
This is better quality than "Blues Anytime" from EVSD. The tape is more complete and the audio quality is at least a generation cleaner, if not two. The stereo separation is MUCH better on this transfer than whatever EVSD used. The first few notes on BIGLY have obviously been spliced in by EVSD from a distorted source (probably not even the same date) and do not exist on the master PCM.
This is more complete and better quality than the original "Dancing Avocado". When I put that one out, the source I was given had been through more DAT and CDR gens.

"Sunday Night Special"
This show had some PA problems in a few places (Jones' bass rig, mainly) and the PA had a slight buzz all night (only noticeable between songs or very quiet passages). But hey, that's how it went down that night, so it's just like being there - except - Plant's mic seems distant - which adds credibility to the 2 neumanns on stage thing. They'd have picked up the drums and amps and Roberts voice would have been on the house PA, which was probably just forward of the mics (or in line). I kind of like it this way - as I can really hear the band!

Hey You [fade in]
"Rain" Like Hell [Raining on crowd - fade in]

OU: This is NOT a "perfect" recording of this wonderful show by any means. I was using borrowed equipment that I was somewhat familiar with but at the time my inexperience in live recording plus the chemical entertainments of the evening contributed to some amateurish mistakes which are listed as follows.
short bursts of static at "fade in" points can be heard at various times (6 times I think) this is due to the volume recalibrating with each pause and restart of the recorder. I have worked to minimize these moments with digital editing.
The mics were worn in a hat as stated. The movement of my head and therefore of the mics caused some odd shifts in stereo image at times such as when one's head must be turned to see events occurring around the stadium e.g. during guitar solo of Comfortably Numb.
The biggest mistake was that the recorder remained stopped or paused for a period of time in the first set and caused Sorrow and Take it back to be missed completely with a significant cut after 1:30 in Coming Back to Life. The only explanation is that the recorder was accidentally stopped and was not discovered until the songs were over (sad) the same occurs in the second set with High Hopes.
I don't own any other known recordings of this show, but a complete show could be made if these songs exist on other recordings in uncut form and are edited together accordingly.
This is the only version of "Rain" Like Hell that I know of. Dave and co. are clearly heard singing the word "RAIN" instead of "Run" and I assure you it was raining like hell through the opening in Texas Stadium! Very Cool!
The show was great regarding both the technical and performance aspects of this show. Also the folks around the mics were very cool and very quiet in my opinion and the recording is quite unobtrusive from an audience standpoint (especially considering the mics were worn close to the body!).
Thanks, Rbuzz

No EQ'ing.

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

The Rolling Stones: The Sotheby Reels 1969-70 (Studio) FLAC

INP-N-013_ft
"SOTHEBY'S REEL 1969-1970" (Idol Mind Production / IMP-N-013 / 1CD)
Lineage: Original CD > EAC > WAV > FLAC
EX+ Stereo Studio Recordings. Artwork Included.
Tracks 1-4,7,8: Olympic Studios, London 10th February-31st March 1969
Track 6: 9-12th December 1969
Tracks 21-24,25-29: 17th October-2nd November 1970
Track 30: early October 1969
Tracks 5,9,11-20: 24th April 1970

OU Notes: The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period.  The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs that serve to let the Stones crown shine brighter.
I would especially like to point out “Gimme Shelter” recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of “You Got The Silver” sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also “Loving Cup” that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes.  Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like “You Gotta Move”, “Dead Flowers” and “Sister Morphine” second version that all resemble the finished Sticky Fingers release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both “Brown Sugar” and “Bitch” that are tiredlessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded “Brown Sugar” in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts.
Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of “Brown Sugar”, here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of “Bitch” where
you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of “Shine A Light” called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You"
that stems from Leon Russel’s sesision at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January
1994 on a Leon Russell CD.
This release from Idol Mind Productions has of course a fantastic stereo sound and absolutely no hiss at all, another proof that its source is coming from the original
tape and featuring so many classic Stones songs from late '69 through 1970 that couldn’t be more palatable.
The release has a great cover also, with a previously unpublished shot while the back cover shows a pensive Stu watching the Olympic Studios recording equipment.
A must! - and a pleasure to listen to many times.

OU comments: this was supposed to be a master transfer post with no CD lineage at all in it, but it was apparently among the casualties of Bertha I's crash landing (or maybe Bertha II which suffered a similar fate, that's why the remaining Bertha computer is now called Bertha III.) It was a clean transfer this time and a glitchless CD so it should sound as good as a master to WAV to flac post would.
Joe introduces track 16 as "time", if it is actually called "got the time", that may have been a change from this time. The Orpheum staff doesn't like dancing in their theater, but Joe likes to dance wherever he's playing so it comes to a bit of a confrontation in this show. It's a very high energy show, and even without "look sharp" it was a very sharp performance. does have some mellow songs too. I think there may be a momentary recorder shutoff in here somewhere, but if so only for a few seconds (there is no flip interruption) and I'm not even sure any music was missed. (someone accidentally bumped into the recorder).
I'm not real sure about track 9 title, pretty sure about the others. If you want a good soundtrack for a 65 minute dance party, this would work.

Eric Clapton: Columbus 1974 (Soundboard) FLAC

Jamie Oldaker Drums
Dick Sims Keyboards
Carl Radle Bass
George Terry Guitar
Yvonne Elliman Backing Vocals

Geetarz Comments: This is it, the ultimate version of ... well, one of the more interesting Clapton concerts! It's quite simple really. Instead of the usual 47th generation analog copy, you begin by sourcing a digital clone of the master reel to reel recording.
Then, you turn the thing over to an audio genius and let him do his stuff. And what you get, is a fascinating document of a time, a place, a feeling.
It's like this - "drunk Eric" shows generally fall into two categories: they're either horrid, or fun, but rarely anything else. But this one is unusual. Clapton's lubricated enough so that he's flip, he's funny, he's relaxed - but at times, he simply CHANNELS into his guitar playing in a way you won't find elsewhere. He's so looped and at the same time, so dead ON, it's scary.
The standout track here is a surreal performance of "Little Wing" that easily stands up to any rendition. If you only want to have one recording from the '74 tour, this would be it. Recommended.
And for the fun: Quips include:
"We're In Tune!" (introducing 'Smile') "This is a song written by Charlie Chaplin - and it that ain't good enough for you ... it's good enough for me"
"This is from me new album ... it ain't that expensive"
"I belong to Glasgow"
"This is me band ... and if they aren't good enough for you ... " (Eric seemed to like that phrase a lot) " ... I'll FIRE THE LOT OF THEM!"
"How come he gets all the f-cking birds?"
(introducing the band) "and my name is ... ROBERT JOHNSON"
Best of all: While the band plays "Little Queenie", Eric sings the "Star Spangled Banner" - horribly out of key!

Led Zeppelin: Blueberry Hill 1970 (9 CD Set) FLAC - Download Friendly

This is a 9 CD Multi-Label set
live_on_blueberry_hill_2_f
Live On Blueberry Hill (also known as Blueberry Hill) is a bootleg recording of the English rock group Led Zeppelin's performance at the Los Angeles Forum on September 4, 1970, which took place during their Summer 1970 North American Tour.
The audience recording is well known for being one of the first ever Led Zeppelin bootlegs, and indeed one of the first ever rock and roll bootlegs ever released. It was initially released on the Blimp label. The album was subsequently pressed on the Trade Mark of Quality label and shipped to England. The album sold so many copies that many fans initially thought it was a legal record. The sleeve notes described it as "One hundred and six minutes and fifty three seconds of pure alive rock." The recording is of very high quality, recorded very close to the stage.
Live On Blueberry Hill derived its name from the fact that at this concert Led Zeppelin performed Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill" as a final encore. The bootleg also features one of the few known live performances of "Out on the Tiles", a track from the group's third album. It also features "Bron-Yr-Aur", a song that wouldn't be released officially until five years later, on Physical Graffiti.
From the 1980s the bootleg became available on CD as a 2-disc set, often under the alternative titles Blueberry Hill and The Final Statements.[3]

Date: August 9th, 1978
Label: Crystal Cat 731-734
FM Broadcast
Original Silver CD's -->EAC v. 0,95 to WAV --> MKW Tool 0,97 to SHN>to Flac8 via TLH
Brucebase: Soundboard and radio broadcast tapes (WMMS) available - good show. It's interesting to note that this show was remastered by Bruce's management and given to KSAN in San Fransico who broadcast it as a replacement for a scheduled Winterland rebroadcast. This must have happened in 1979 sometime. The remastered show has fantastic stereo seperation and coupled with the fact that this is a good show in the first place, it has to rank as one of the best of the available shows in 1978. -
Released on LP and CD. The most recent (and best quality) CD releases of this show are "Agora Night" by Crystal Cat and "Just In Time For Summer".

Total: 119:46

Comments: From a very clean clone of the master cassettes. These tapes are the source for every Bradford release that you have heard. This is a direct transfer from the first generation tapes which date from 1971.
The recording includes all tune-ups and band chatter between tracks. The boys are in a playful mood, as you can tell by their interaction with the audience, which is very quiet during the songs. There is no appreciable hiss. The taper also used 60 minute cassettes, 30 minutes to a side, which is obvious by the breaks.
- 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene': The recording begins with the first few notes of the song. I especially like Roger's scream since it is--by my count--a full 19 seconds long!
- 'Fat Old Sun': A great jam session. Vocals are not perfectly clear, but you can hear every word. There are some interesting guitar licks during the tune-ups.
- 'Set The Controls': The first tape flip occurs during the intro. After the song, Roger introduces 'Atom Heart Mother' then says the band is going to take a break, followed by what sounds like "then we're going to have a drink."
- 'Atom Heart Mother': During the intro, there are several pops which sound as if they might have been due to a loose microphone lead.
- 'Echoes': The opening pings to this "new piece" just pierces your skull.
- 'Cymbaline': The "footsteps" sequence goes on for quite a while. The third and final tape flip occurs during this sequence.
- 'One Of These Days': David introduces this new song using its full title. This was the second performance of this song, the first was at the BBC 0n 30 September.
- 'A Saucerful Of Secrets': The final break in the tape occurs prior to 'Celestial Voices'.
The time references refer to the point in time where the song ends on the tape.

Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Rising Sun 1972 (VG+ Aud) shn

2
"Dark Side Of The Rising Sun - JBeat Remaster"
Japan
March 13, 1972

Here's a major quality upgrade to the original DSOTRS boot. Anyone liking the original will love this. I have corrected two major problems on the boot:
1. Tracks on the original boot were not indexed properly. This has been corrected.
2.Closeup handclaps prevented the show from being enjoyed to its fullest extent. This has been corrected.
After extracting, I shortened the names for easier distribution. (This is why the EAC LOG file differs from the file names.)
Lineage: Usenet post by Meathead (from original silver w/EAC in secure mode) >
Remastering by JBeat (via Sound Forge) > Kodak CDR > EAC (secure mode, with Plextor) > mkwACT> SHN (I forgot if this is shn or flac)

I added a number of excellent Floyd photos and wallpaper (including the above) for you to make your own art if desired. - Dave

The original md5 file matches that shown at http://www.concerts-db.com/index.php?bootleg_id=1218&concert_id=132

Comments: Very listenable show from the close of the North American 1970 tour. Only crowd noise is appreciative and does not get in the way of the music!
'Atom Heart Mother' was played with orchestra and choir conducted by Peter Philips.
The show contains one of the best live versions of 'A Saurcerful of Secrets', with some crazy percussive piano played by Wright.
Encore was a 19 minute version of 'Interstellar Overdrive'.
