Deep Striker Empress Valley - EVSD 26-29 - 4CD
June 27, 1977 The Forum - Los Angeles, CA.Audio: 9+ AUD
One of the most expensive bootlegs I have ever had the pleasure of owning and an incredibly hard set to locate on the collector market as well. Caution must be given when buying this set as there are bad copies of disc number 3 in circulation. The "bad" disc 3 has a mastering fault and has a 1 second gap in between tracks. The matrix number of the bad disc 3 is TG5093. The matrix number of the corrected disc 3 is TI5060. Be warned when shopping around for this expensive set. I got lucky in that my copy came with both the "good" and "bad" copy of disc 3, so my set contains 5CDs in all and not the standard 4CDs. The package is the "Empress Valley" long box - a hard cardboard block trimmed out in the center to hold the discs. The tray is housed in a glossy cardstock open-ended slipcover. The individual discs are housed in cream paper sleeves with the Empress Valley logo printed in gold on the lower right corner. The last night in the LA Forum in excellent quality courtesy of the late great Mike Millard's fantastic audience source tapes. The tape starts out with the cheering masses anxiously awaiting the start of the show. There are initial tape balance issues, but these seem to be resolved during the soundcheck just prior to the opening of The Song Remains The Same. The source tape is excellent quality - typical of Mike Millard source tapes - it's taped near the stage, is very clear, well balanced and displays an incredible sense of depth. The tape is slightly hissy, but it in no way detracts the recording. There is also a detectable ripple effect audible in some of the quieter parts of the tape - probably an accidental by product of the tape recorder. The opening audience cheer sound as if it has been looped (TDOLZ's Sunset also has this issue) for several seconds extending the hysteria prior to the start of the show. Nobody's Fault But Mine has a seamless tape splice for several seconds at about the 1 minute 42 second mark on the disc. The audio quality remains consistent, but there is a definite variance in tone there - superb splice though. The start of No Quarter contains some quick tape swaps, again seamlessly done. The section of tape after Ten Years Gone is sliced in and lasts until just prior to the start of The Battle Of Evermore. The tape flutter becomes increasingly apparent during the acoustic set but not to the point that it ruins it. At around 4 minutes 5 seconds into Kashmir we switch over to an alternate tape for 9 seconds before seamlessly switching back to the main tape. There also appears to be a several second tape swap in the empty space after Trampled underfoot and another after Bonzo's Over The Top drum solo. Achilles Last Stand contains a cut in the tape that causes audio to be lost. I am fairly certain that there are no available bootlegs that have this section intact. Stairway To Heaven had a number of seamless tape swaps. The last night in L.A. didn't quite have the party atmosphere that was present on the Eddie or Badgeholders nights, but it was a solid show and a worthy addition to any collection. Due to the staggering cost that this set trades for on the collector market though, I have to recommend the TDOLZ title Sunset over this one on the cost factor alone. Unless you have deep pockets or are actively collecting EVSD, I can't see any merit in spending the admission price. Deep Striker is an improvement over Sunset, but given the cost differences between the two sets, it's not that big of an improvement. Track it down on CDR if you just absolutely have to have a copy. If you are in the market to buy, don't forget to verify the matrix number of disc 3 prior to buying. Highlights for me from this show include Sick Again, Ten Years Gone, the acoustic Dancing Days snippet and Achilles Last Stand (tape cut or not!). (Steve Prendergast July 03)

SGT. Page's Badgeholders Club Band Tarantura 2000 - TCD-YUZUKI-3 - 3CD
June 23, 1977 The Forum - Los Angeles, CA. Audio: 9+/9.5 EXCELLENT
This show has been released numerous times over the years and instead of giving a play by play of what's happening on-stage, I am going to instead only offer my comments on the source tape mix and Tarantura's handling of the mastering. If you want the detailed overview of this concert, please reference my comments on the TDOLZ version, For Badgeholders Only, and then come back here. The overall audio is excellent. The main chunk of source tape used here is outstanding - much cleaner, crisper and fuller than the TDOLZ version with little tape hiss and more bottom end. It could very well give the Eddie tape a run for it's money. This is the same source tape used on the TDOLZ For Badgeholders Only set. The flip side of the tweaking of the sound is that some of the higher range portions of the tape begin to distort and break under the equalization. It's not as bad as it sounds but it is worth mentioning. I really noticed this during the guitar solo in Over The Hills And Far Away. There is a tape swap after Over The Hills And Far Away that is executed perfectly with only the slightest change in tape depth and a two second section of tape that has an echo effect on the audience cheer that is the result of the two source tapes being faded in/out at the same time but a fraction off on the timing (it's an old club DJ trick). The tape cut in TDOLZ's Since I've Been Loving You has been fixed in this release and is patched with the alternate source. The mysterious "heartbeat" found on the TDOLZ set during No Quarter is thankfully absent here. It's really hard to comprehend that this is the same source tape issued by TDOLZ as the differences in sound and completeness are night and day. Ten Years Gone features the splice in the solo just prior to the "Do the eyes not sparkle" lyric. The Stomp also features the familiar tape gaps nicely filled. Trampled Underfoot features a 4 second patch of tape at 03:50 that has an odd metallic sounding echo that disappears almost as fast at it started. There is a glitch in the tape at 06:09 in Achilles Last Stand. A split second of tape overlap is what it sounds like. There seems to be another one of these at the 08:39 stamp as well. The Millard tape recorder ripple becomes noticeable on the 3rd disc - especially during Stairway To Heaven - it's like a low pulsing flutter. This is also very noticeable on Millard's tape used by Empress Valley for Deep Striker. I do not know what causes it but it must be due to something with his recorder. The artwork and packaging I have a mixed opinion of. I bought the promotional prototype edition that is limited to 50 copies and I really like the shuffle pack format that this set came in. I am undecided on the whole The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's parody sleeve design, but I am absolutely aghast at the piss poor psychedelic rainbow backgrounds and the (at times) goofy graphics and designs. Empress Valley is much more refined and mature on their graphics design and they ooze class. This almost borders on tacky but it's tolerable due to the cool shuffle pack format I'm going to take the stance that if all I can bitch about is the goofy artwork, it's a winner - especially when one takes into consideration this label's reputation for molesting their source tapes. The only real complaint I have is that the tracks were split up a bit too much for my liking (ie we don't need to split The Rover Intro into Sick Again and make it 2 separate tracks. Thankfully CoolMixMan and Black Dog Studios are no longer a part of this label. Perhaps we can now expect quality product from this label. One can only hope. In my opinion, this set is highly recommended and is the definitive commercial version of this show. WOW! I can't believe I actually said that about a Tarantura 2000 release! I added a few seconds of Plantations after Dancing Days that was missing from another Millard Source. You will be able to tell the difference of the sources.

4-Black Dog

This is a well known, excellent sounding audience recording by the great Mike Millard. I think EV did a very nice job with the Millard source and used splices of an alternate source to fill the small gaps. The performance is very good although once again there's confusion about the form on The Crunge.
The sound is very clear and powerful but could use a bit more bass IMO though so adjust as you prefer. Winston's remaster is hard to beat as they always are, but this is a very worthwhile download. Nice cover art too. Enjoy!

Led Zeppelin: Long Beach 1975 (Ex Aud) FLAC

Acme_Quaalude_F
Acme Quaalude, 3cd (TCD-77-1,2,3) Bootleg License second edition
Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, California, USA - March 11, 1975
from the boxset: Bootleg License, 6cd by Tarantura (TCD-77-78) 1st edition
lineage: silvers>EAC>Flac

By the time Led Zeppelin hit California on their tenth tour of the US, they had also hit the pinnacle of their success as a viable rock band in the seventies. Their last masterwork Physical Graffiti hit the shelves two weeks before and by the middle of March became the fastest selling album in their history and entered number one on the charts. A residual effect was that their older albums also entered the charts. The two Long Beach shows were the second and third in southern California (following the March 10th show in San Diego) and the band loosen up considerably compared to earlier shows on the tour. Being both well advertised and (generally) well received, these two have been in almost constant circulation since the seventies seeing many different releases and have achieved status with Led Zeppelin collectors.
Bootleg License on Tarantura is the latest release of these tapes and in general is a nice improvement over older issues. The March 11th tape is excellent all by itself but Tarantura present a very natural and appealing version of the tape. March 12th is a two source mix and while the main tape is a rough listen, Tarantura’s work with it makes it a significant upgrade over older titles utilizing this source and actually makes the tape enjoyable. The two concerts are packaged in a thick tri-fold cardboard sleeves for each of the shows which fit in a thick glossy cardboard box with a magnet on the site to hold the upper flap down. It is a gorgeous production in limited quantities. The first edition has already sold out with a second edition on its way which also will most likely sell out.
The March 11th show comes from a Mike Millard tape. Many claim this is the first show he recorded on the Nakamichi stereo recorder with AKG Acoustics microphones for these shows. The jump in sound quality between this (and the Pink Floyd show the following month) compared to his tapes of the Yes Topographic shows the previous year is dramatic. The clarity and balance are remarkable for what is arguably the best sounding tape from the entire tour. An early vinyl release for this tape can be found on How Many More Times (Moby’s Dick LZ 31175 A-F D 21-26) with most of the recording but runs too fast. On compact disc it can be found on Long Beach Arena (Bad Girl CDJ1) on two discs and missing “Dazed And Confused,” released in 1991 from Italy. 462 Ocean Boulevard (American Concert Series ACS 037) and its clone California Sunset (American Concert Series PSCD 037) are two other early titles.
The tape was also used on Long Beach 1975 Parts 1&2&3 (Flying Disc Music CD 6 827-829), California 1975 (Post Script PSCD 2201), Pussy & Cock (Tarantura T3CD-6) (running too fast), Long Beach Arena Complete (Confusion Records Confuse 001) (speed corrected), Zeppelin L (Akashic AKA-7) in really nice packaging and California Graffiti (Masterport-233). California Sunshine (Badgeholder BH008-01-02-03) and In The Shadow Of Midnight (Empress Valley Supreme Disc) are the two latest releases of the show and both utilize the second, inferior sounding tape to fill in some of the cuts. Tarantura follow the same path to produce as complete a show as possible. The edits are very smoothly handled.
A review of this show written by Robert Hilburn in the Los Angeles Times really slammed the performance when he writes: “Besides setting box office records on this tour, the English group also may be setting some type of record for the most cliches in a single concert: a manlight show, steam from dry ice covering the stage (three different times), the band’s name spelled out in lights, a laser beam (something an opening act at the Troubadour did last year), an explosion at the rear of the stage and, of course, the obligatory 20-minute drum solo….But Zeppelin’s material is so lacking in both commentary and emotional challenge that the music ends up as an empty exercise in sound. While there are some soft moments (indeed the gentle ‘Stairway To Heaven’ has become the band’s anthem), the thrust of the evening is on heavy, pulsating assaults. The lyrics are often woeful, the themes unaffecting.” (”Led Zeppelin, Cliches And All” March 13th, 1975).
Normally when Zeppelin were loose they produced legendary performances. This show has it’s highlights but is plagued by equipment problems and issues with the PA which seem to distract them onstage. The first hint of problems occurs in the second song where the transition, normally several crashing chords on guitar, is rendered very weak and ineffective. “We must apologize for the slight delay but we couldn’t get into the building. We hadn’t got any tickets. It’s a fact” Plant brags before and excellent version of “Over The Hills And Far Away.”
“If you intend to sit still, well forget it” Plant promises before a monsterous version of “In My Time Of Dying.” Things fall apart in the following song when Page’s twelve string goes out of tune basically ruining the song. “The Rain Song” is played on the six string neck and comes off much better, but afterwards Plant get defensive when he says, “for the benefit of anybody who was making a bootleg then, the twelve-string was out of tune on ‘Song Remains The Same.’” After “Kashmir” Plant mentions Jones’ mellotron, calling it a “Pakistani orchestra, all in one pool player.” John Paul Jones’ showcase “No Quarter” follows. This is about two weeks into the new instrumentation, trading in the organ for the grand piano for the solo. The dark and somber intonations of the 1973 and early 1975 versions were gone as these tapes reveal Jones trying very hard to try all sort of different styles and motifs to find a new direction of the song. Some shows like the Seattle show five days later show that he was lost, but this version hold together well before Page come in with the “No Quarter” solo.
Before “Trampled Underfoot” Plant is speaking about Robert Johnson but is interrupted by the road crew fixing the equipment. “The drumming and the hammering is by courtesy of Acme Quaalude company, Ltd. This is a guy building a chicken pen. Can you hear it?” “Moby Dick” is only twenty minutes long. Page and Bonham try to outdo one another in the opening fanfare and by the end Bonzo lets out a mighty shout. ”Dazed And Confused” clocks in at just under a half hour. Plant includes Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” before the violin bow solo and Page tries some new improvisations during the piece. After the song Plant leads the obligitory ovations for Jimmy Page. “That was a combination of key signatures that just will never occur again. Amidst the rushing and screaming of cowboys. ‘Hello cowboy in the sand’ (singing Neil Young’s song but changing cowgirl to cowboy) and now there comes again a song we really dig.”
After “Stairway To Heaven” the band play the normal encores for this tour. “Whole Lotta Love” is played for a minute before segueing into the theremin histrionics of Page. Tarantura track this five minute piece as “medley” since it also includes an almost complete version of “The Crunge” from Houses Of The Holy. The song is Zeppelin’s uncomfortable take on James Brown funk, but is fun in a live context. The theremin cacophony mutates effortlessly into the riff to “Out On The Tiles” which leads into a heavy version of “Black Dog.” Maybe it’s a problem with the PA but Jones’ bass sounds very loud throughout. ”Ladies and gentlemen of Long Beach, goodnight. Sleep well. And half a Quaalude with water” are Plant’s parting words. Many collectors criticize this show and although it isn’t legendary there is a lot to enjoy on these discs.

6-The Song Remains The Same
7-The Rain Song

Disc 3:
1-Dazed And Confused
2-Stairway To Heaven
3-Whole Lotta Love - The Crunge

This is a very worthwhile download. Nice cover art too.
Enjoy!

The Rolling Stones: The Complete LA Sunday Tapes 1975 (some) Mike Millard Masters) FLAC

TheCompleteLASundayTapes-FRONT
THE ROLLING STONES - THE COMPLETE LA SUNDAY TAPES (SODD 073-074-075-076)
LINEAGE: Original bootleg CDs -> WAV (EAC v. 0.95 beta 4 - secure, Offset "actual") -> FLAC (flacfrontend, level 6) -> You
DATE: Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California
July 10th and 13th 1975
QUALITY: Excellent Audience recording
PERFORMANCE: Absolutely excellent
OU COMMENTS: This is the SODD release of both sources of the July 13th show (+ the couple of songs from July 10th). I also have the Dandelion box (titled "The Complete LA Friday Tapes"), but I'm unable to rip it because of one scratch on one of the discs.
When comparing those 2 releases.....I prefer Dandelion. I'm not a fan of SODD's EQing. They make the drums sound like plastic buckets.
But from what I understand; others like SODD's EQing - and maybe they'll find this upload useful, if so.
All tracks comes from July 13th 1975, apart from 6 tracks on disc 3 and 4.
Thanks to Mike Millard for his recording (disc 1 and 2)

ARTWORK: Selfmade scans in great resolution are included.

Led Zeppelin: The Unmarked Mike Millard Masters 1975 and 1977 (Download Friendly) FLAC

as promised!
0014ee46
Previously uncirculated set of unmarked tapes for this show transferred with Dolby B on as per Mike's notes on the tape labels using an adjustable outboard Dolby B unit. This is the 1st time (May 2010) these tapes have ever been digitized. The sound is completely unaltered except for pitch correction during playback and fades added for each of the tape flips.
Mike Millard UNMARKED Led Zeppelin - newly made available.

The fan recording of a concert is really an extension of taking snapshots of your heroes. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s recordable media was just making its way into households as a consumer electronic device, either an expensive reel-to-reel deck or a convenient cassette recording deck. Just imagine sneaking one of those into a concert these days. More likely, the stealth recorder of choice today would be a mini-disc recorder or your handphone. Small enough to fit your pocket.
But Michael Millard was different. He arrived early at concerts near his home, pulled out a wheelchair from the boot of his car and proceeded to wheel himself into the arena as an invalid. He managed to secure front row "seats", almost always front and center. Hidden underneath his wheelchair was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck hooked up to two high-quality AKG mics. Security guards in those days were probably unaware of such goings on.
His recordings were much sought after for their quality - capturing the expanse of the stage plus the great ambience of the halls. His close proximity eliminated any echo from his recordings. All the instruments recorded right off the front speakers. But Millard had a habit of marking his tapes when he copied them for another collector or fan. He would, for instance, lower the levels when transferring the audio to a VHS tape or lower the volume in mid-song when making a cassette copy. It has been said he detested bootleggers who pressed up his recordings onto vinyls or CDs to sell. To that end, he kept a log of all the trades he made with clear indications of what markings he did to the tapes. That way, he knew which of his trades were sent to bootleggers.
He worked as a custodian in a public school. In a fit of depression, he committed suicide in 1990. His friends say he destroyed all copies of his Led Zeppelin recordings. These are what are now being traded back and forth.
Millard was active from 1974 to the ‘80s and was said to have taped shows by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jethro Tull and even Kansas. To date, we have never found a copy of his Who or Tull recordings. The non-Zeppelin masters are known to be in possession of Millard’s family. Hopefully, someday they will be shared again.

Yes: Los Angeles Forum 1977 (Mike Millard Master EX Aud) FLAC

This is a RARE pre-bootleg source untouched master
Publicationi
I made some art for the ocassion.
Yes: Los Angeles Forum, CA-September 23, 1977-Mike Millard Master Tape
Master tape>dat>dat>cd-r>Bias Peak Pro 5.2.1>XACT>flac

Other versions of this show have been posted of this concert before. This is not a re-seed or re-hash of those, but an entirely new upgrade from the master tapes.
On several occasions before he passed away, Millard let a close friend come to his residence and transfer a number of his masters to dat while they were hanging out. This show is one of those master>dat transfers.
This is Mike's mint, raw master. Please note that it has not been equalized or remastered. Since I do not have any boots of this show, I cannot comment on how it compares to them. To me the sound quality is excellent. As many of you already know, Millard's recordings are known for their quality. Hope you enjoy this gem.

Lineup: Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman, and White

Setlist:
Disc One: (66:23)
1.Firebird Suite/Parallels
2.I've Seen All Good People
3.Close To The Edge
4. Wonderous Stories/Colors Of The Rainbow/Turn Of The Century

Led Zeppelin: The End of the Marathon 1975 (EX Millard Audience Master) shn

THE END OF THE MARATHON - L.A. 3-27-75 - FRONT
no label
3 cd
The Forum
Inglewood,California
March 27, 1975
Superior audience recording
This is the infamous last show of the 1975 North American Tour with Linda Lovelace introducing the band. The lineage I have on this source is mentioned below.
This audience source sounds great and should be a great addition to any Zeppelin collection. Enjoy!
1st gen from Millard Master plus alternate
source used to fill in the gaps.
Millard Master > DAT > WAVE > SHN
Alternate source - unknown gen.
One man who did probably more than anyone else, and whose efforts have left us with some superb sounding recordings, is the late Mike Millard, the taper behind the best sounding audience recordings of Led Zeppelin. The shows he taped (with the best version on CD named after each show) are as follows:-
Long Beach Arena, 11 March 1975. 3CD "CALIFORNIA GRAFFITI " (Masterport).
Long Beach Arena, 12 March 1975. Only the last part of the show was recorded by Mike Millard, and can be found on "LONG BEACH ARENA FRAGMENT" (Holy). It is understood that he had a car accident on the way to the venue, and was considerably delayed.
LA Forum, 24 March 1975. 3CD "DEEP THROAT I" (Empress Valley).
LA Forum, 25 Forum March 1975. 3CD "DEEP THROAT II " (Empress Valley).
LA Forum, 27 March 1975. 3CD "DEEP THROAT III " (Empress Valley).
San Diego Sports Coliseum, 19 June 1977. 3CD "MYSTERY TRAIN " (Badgeholders).
LA Forum, 21 June 1977. 3CD "WATCH AND LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE" (Genuine Masters).
LA Forum, 23 June 1977. 3CD "FOR BADGEHOLDERS ONLY" (Tarantura). Millard's tape is incomplete (he accidentally left the pause button switched on at the start of the concert) and his recording can be found on 3CD "FOR BADGE HOLDERS ONLY" (Balboa).
LA Forum, 25 June 1977. 3CD "DELIRIUM TREATMENT " (Tarantura).
LA Forum, 27 June 1977. 4CD "DEEP STRIKER" (Empress Valley).
Millard used a wheelchair for a recording prop. His taping equipment was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck and AKG microphones. Various transfers from his masters were done over the years. Often the 1st generation copies would be slightly sabotaged by Millard. This was done by him to see who traded each version of his master. For example, low recording levels on the VHS copies or a few cuts here and there. Sadly Millard, during his depression, destroyed most of his masters, certainly all the Led Zeppelin ones. Tragically he committed suicide in 1990, but his family still own all the masters. The shows that he captured on tape and saved for posterity are among the best ever concerts Led Zeppelin performed. He recorded a number of other famous bands such as Pink Floyd, Yes, and the Rolling Stones.
