Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers: Rock Goes to College 1980 (FLAC)

Oxford Polytechnic, Oxford, England. March 24th 1980.
Part of TP's tour to the UK promoting the "Damn The Torpedoes" album.

Rock Goes To College was a BBC series that ran between 1978 and 1981 on British television. A variety of up-coming rock oriented bands were showcased live from small venues and broadcast simultaneously on television and radio during a 40-50 minute live performance.

Concert Venues:
The venues were small University, Polytechnic or College halls holding a few thousand persons which gave a more intimate atmosphere than larger venues and often tickets were given to the Students' Union to distribute for free (to ensure that the concert halls were full) - effectively an invited audience. The bands chosen were also bands which did not have a mainstream following at that time although many went on to be very successful.

A BBC DJ would also be present to introduce the band for the television audience.

Innovation:
The original broadcasts were transmitted on television as well as Sight and Sound in Concert; a BBC initiative to provide simultaneous pictures on BBC2 and stereo radio broadcasts on BBC Radio 1 (as stereo television broadcasts and receivers did not exist at the time). It allowed rock enthusiasts to enjoy the event with an improved sound quality.

Lineage:
BBC Radio 2 FM broadcast > Phillips CD Recorder > WAV > EAC > WAV> FLAC

The Doors: Isle of Wight Festival August 29, 1970 (Soundboard) FLAC

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com

Source : Palace of Exile Bootleg (SBD), BBC broadcast unknown date (snippet cut of The End), audience recording (cuts of WTMO and tunings), torrent file (The Ultimate Collected Spoken Words 1967-1970) for Jim's interview.
=> Flac level 6

What has been done here:
- swap the chanels of SOF, RHB, LMF and The End to get the correct mixing (organ on the left and guitar on the right)
- add the tunings of the audience recording between the tracks, the "outrageous" part which was behind the WTMO SBD at the end of the show (I got this info from Porsche)
- add the missing part of the beginning of The End
- modify the snippet cut of The End from the BBC broadcast to get a better transition, I place the cut a little bit later and remix
- add the cut parts of WTMO from the audience recording and tried a remix to make them sound like the SBD, the result is far of the perfection but gives a good idea of the complete track, then pulled down the volume level of this track which seemed a little too heavy
- put as a bonus track the original WTMO with its cuts for those who do not like the EQ modifications
- put as a bonus track the interview of Jim

Setlist :
01. Back Door Man 4:40
02. Break On Through 4:56

Eric Clapton: Jersey City 1974 (Soundboard)

Live at Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, New Jersey, July 7, 1974

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com

On the road to promote 461 Ocean Boulevard, Eric Clapton must have disappointed his fans when he played only three tracks from the new album - Let It Grow, Willie And The Hand Jive and Get Ready.

One posting on the internet says that in this show, Eric Clapton was very loose (that is, drunk), especially on vocals. Whether he was loose or drunk, he was in a fairly mellow mood, dragging out the gospel-ish Let It Grow. But he was not so out-of-it that he couldn't play - Let It Rain has a nice jam at the end (after which Clapton says to the crowd, don't mind if I have a drink) and he gets into the groove on Key To The Highway.

But then Clapton must have a lot on his mind to contend with. After his drug-addled days, his record company might be thinking that Clapton wouldn't last the distance - hence they taped practically every show on this tour and eventually released the rather brief EC Was Here. Then he had Yvonne Elliman as backing vocalist. Elliman was married to Bill Oakes, the president of RSO Records; Oakes introduced her to Clapton, who invited Elliman to sing backup vocals on I Shot The Sheriff. Invited is probably a too-polite term. On his own Clapton was probably still thinking of Patti Harrison (hence the recurrence of Badge, a song written with George Harrison). But he seemed to have gritted his teeth somewhat and carried on - otherwise why would he open his shows on the 1974 tour with Charlie Chaplin's Smile, with the happy-sad lyric, Smile though your heart is aching

While Willie And The Hand Jive has existed with a faster tempo, here, it sort of shares the same terrain as the reggae-inflected I Shot The Sheriff (which is sorely missed). Though many might disagree, this was not a show of guitar artistry or pyrotechnics - though there was some outstanding playing on Have You Ever Loved A Woman. The key word is groove, as this excellent soundboard recording makes clear. Take Badge for instance. While the song is a CreamClapton classic, he lets the intro run on and on (because it grooves) and one keeps expecting Carlos Santana to jump in!

As a treat, Freddie King appears on Have You Ever Loved A Woman and Little Queenie.

These tracks originally appeared in the Undercover Box Set (Mid Valley Records). Thanks to ECMusicMan for sharing them.

Bob Dylan & The Band: Isle Of Wight 1969

Audience source

On the cusp of the '70s, rock music was still a bubbly mixture of styles and ideas. You could record anything and there would be an audience and more importantly a record label willing to put it out.

Bob Dylan and The Band fired off Music From Big Pink and signalled a return to the "invisible republic" of the past when everything was simpler. This album more than any reportedly energised and inspired English musicians like Eric Clapton and George Harrison to look Westward and backwards.

Instead of rocking out like they did in 1966, Dylan and The Band slowed things into a country square dance. No exhortations to "play ****in' loud" instead, steel guitars, accordians and a crooning, bleating Dylan took to the stage and, by all accounts, only a selected enlightened few were mesmerised. Mostly, the show was considered under-rehearsed.

Incredibly, this performance was the first time Dylan stepped on stage after the motorcycle accident. Some were expecting the Second Coming as his appearance boosted attendence. On hand for this show was rock's royalty, The Beatles, two Stones, The Who, Free, Eric Clapton and, in the audience, a young Elton John.

This was the year the Beatles were to release Abbey Road, all "special effects" and stylish, the year Led Zeppelin II was launched and proto-heavy metal birthed. Instead, 100,000 fans at the Isle of Wight were treated to the countrified and loosely-played Like A Rolling Stone.

So how did it feel?

Now for the first time you can hear the almost-complete show from an astonishingly clear audience recording. The origin of this audience reel to reel tape was keithdylan who bought the master copy from a dealer/fan and decided to share it, warts and all on the net at the Hunger City site. Later it was mastered and artwork done by JTT, around October 2007. This cleaned up version deleted gaps, added fades and other little touches and was shared by eddiethecat. This is the cleaned up version. A big thanks for their generosity.

After the show, Dylan and the celebrities retired to a party where The Beatles played an acetate of their to-be-released Abbey Road. No one recorded Bob Dylan's reaction.
