David Bowie: Vancouver 1976 (Soundboard) FLAC

VANCOUVER REHEARSALS - FRONT - ACID
David Bowie - Rehearsals 1976 (2nd February 1976)
The Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Very Good Soundboard Recording Remastered By Captain Acid

OU: Hi Bowie fanatics, here it is, another `76 upgrade. Well, this one was pretty good to start with, and now it`s even better.
I have edited back in, Jean Genie that was missing, and i have also edited in the fals start of Five Years that was also missing.Someone was already dealing with this soundboard, it was mastered pretty loud for my taste but i did not want my remaster to be more quiet than this so they are the same in loudness. But they are different in other things.
I have fixed pitch, phase and levels and then I did the EQ.
No compression, limiters or noise reduction! Erik Snow and Quicksand were very helpful. Erik made another tasty artwork.
Enjoy

David Bowie: Glasgow 1973 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

1
art by me included
Glasgow
5th January 1973

Very good audience recording
Files sent to me > Audacity > TLH > FLAC

01 Let's Spend The Night Together
02 Hang Onto Yourself
03 Ziggy Stardust
04 Changes
05 The Supermen
06 Five Years
07 The Width of A Circle
08 Life On Mars
09 John I'm only Dancing
10 Moonage Daydream
11 The Jean Genie
12 Suffragette City
13 Rock and Roll Suicide

This is a very rare recording. Much of it emerged on a the CD - BUT, in abbreviated, and rough, form - as if it were from a rough vinyl pressing.
This is a slightly re-worked version - I have done my best to sort out the channel bias, widen the sound a little (sounds good in headphones in particular that way), and reduce some of the hiss (a little - I don't like hiss removal, as that way you remove music too).
The raw version is up on Hunger City for those who prefer 'untampered with' recordings.
I would rather torrent this myself on this occasion : if you would like to torrent this elsewhere, please consult me first.
In the meantime, enjoy.
The process I use in Audacity to widen the sound, usually consists of the following -
-9db decrease (as the mixing and combining needs space)
double up the tracks, add .01 sec delay to one of the channels, split channels and mix either side (balance achieved through trial and error)
Combine above doubled up track with untouched track with the latter at a higher level. The above mixing while giving a nice widening effect I am more than aware can sometimes sound artificial to some, and I have found combining it with the untouched file means a balance is achieved between the raw sound of the original and the mixed version. Studios used - and I'm sure still do - used to resort to all sorts of double tracking and compression effects and the bottom line is this method I found by trial and error sounds good to me and others. Those who do not approve or find it does not sound good to them - no-one is forcing you to download this.
Voila...I listen to live recordings in headphones for the most part, and many people listen in headphones / earphones these days.
This may sound better to many like that, and I am aware that through conventional speakers this sort of mix / re-work may or may not sound as good as an untouched version. It's very subjective, and very much down to individual preference.
Where I don't provide samples the downloader who is unsure about this can simply pick one or two tracks to ascertain how good this is, just as I do.

Re balancing and tuning of the sound carried out with mda_image and high and low pass filters in Audacity.

OU: this post includes the entire show of Tin Machine in Boston. the reel's only been played maybe 3 times through and held up well. in the words of Carter Alan, the host DJ for this regional broadcast, David Bowie and the band looked and sounded like they were doing what they wanted to be doing, not trying to make a hit record. that's when David Bowie is his best, when he's not trying to fit a style or a label. the band sounds very tight and rockin' and David sounds like he's really glad to be in Boston. this was one of the best shows Boston saw/heard in 1991 and the crowd reaction was very enthusiastic (so was the performance).

OU Info: David Bowie played an exclusive gig for less than 200 people in London - and filmed the show for his young daughter. The 55-year-old performed the special gig at the BBC's Maida Vale studios in west London, which was recorded for a Radio 2 special to be broadcast next month.
He performed the track Bewlay Brothers - from his 1971 album Hunky Dory - live for the first time, but had to use lyric sheets to keep up, because, he said, "there are more words in this than War and Peace".
Bowie used a hand-held camera to capture parts of the show for his two-year-old daughter Alexandria back home with his wife Iman in New York. "This is just to show my daughter exactly what sort of person I associate with," he said, focusing his lens on the fans. Of the 10 songs he played, most came from his recent Heathen album. But he also played Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's Alabama Song - which was a single in 1980 - and Look Back in Anger from the Lodger album.
He also played 1974 single Rebel Rebel, telling the audience: "This is one that I said I'd never play again - and true to my track record, here it comes."

recorded, digitized and posted by glasnostrd19. A this and that production.

David and Reeves perform in front of a small audience in a studio and chat some with the audience. This recording is complete except the first few seconds of the track 1 introduction. Quality is crisp and clear.
Track 4 has a bit of explanation from David how a riff he got from Jimmy Page many years earlier helped him put both those songs together (yes, even David Bowie learned something from LZ's guitarist).
This was the day before the 1st of 2 shows at the Orpheum Theater in Boston, (with his full band) and there is mention of the webcast of one of those. It was my 1st ever attempt to see a webcasted concert, and I never got to see more than an occasional broken apart note. live concert webcasting was still a very primitive art in 1997 (apparently) but I later heard the shows were very good ones. Boston has always appreciated David Bowie, even playing a "secret gig" at Avalon (1996?) which I've never heard. This is the 1st time this recording has been posted (September 2009).
Since it's a short set, I also included Conan O'Brien TV appearance of April 11, 1997, which fits with this because one of many subjects of mention in this radio show was track 10 (IAOA). The Conan appearance is complete, lineage is the same except from TV (cable) instead of FM radio.
Do not sell this recording. Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly.

David Bowie & Dana Gillespie: "Bowpromo1" 1971 (FLAC)

david_bowie_dana_gillespie_bowpromo1
Here is a genuine David Bowie rarity! Featured on this UK only promotional LP are 5 songs that were to appear on 'Hunky Dory' but with different mixes plus 2 songs that didn't ever appear on the album. The Dana Gillespie material is also from the Mick Ronson / David Bowie 'Mainman' writing and production team. Sound quality is excellent, from a crisp near mint copy of the LP that belonged to Dana herself!
Euripides May 2011

In August 1971, David Bowie's manager Tony Defries had 500 promo LPs pressed to secure him and other Mainman artist Dana Gillespie a record deal. This promo album, featuring seven songs by David on side A and five by Dana Gillespie on the flip, is often being referred to as the BOWPROMO white-label album. The LP came in generic white outer and inner sleeves and had no printed labels, so its matrix number (BOWPROMO 1A-1/1B-1) is the only way to safely identify it. Most of the Bowie songs on this promo LP would appear four months later on Hunky Dory. However, as the recording and mixing of that album had not yet been finished, it transpired that the BOWPROMO LP contained two songs that would not end up on any official album for the next 20 years (Bowie's 'Bombers' and Gillespie's 'Lavender Hill'). Besides, it features marginally to very different early mixes/versions.
The following is a complete breakdown of the differences and relevant info on the selections:
Oh! You Pretty Things: side A opens with a version of 'Oh! You Pretty Things' that sounds very close to the Hunky Dory version, but with a few subtle differences. Bowie's vocal is slightly more upfront on the Hunky Dory version, while the piano on the BOWPROMO version sounds much more 'spatious'. The only genuine difference that is detectable though is the amount of reverb used on the chorus. The BOWPROMO uses this on both the main and backing vocals, whereas the album version uses much less, if any, for both.
Eight Line Poem: on Hunky Dory, the guitar is more central during the intro, drifts to the left and then back to the centre for the end. On the BOWPROMO version it starts on the right then switches between left and right during the second half, again ending in the centre. On the BOWPROMO, the piano completely natural sounding, whereas on the Hunky Dory it has a flanging effect applied. However, this version is best known for a different vocal take. Bowie sings 'The tactful cactus by your window' vs 'Tactful..' and 'They've opened shops...' vs 'Opened...'. The echo used on 'collision' in the line 'Mobile spins to its collision' is also missing on the BOWPROMO.
Kooks: a different stereo mix that fades two seconds later than the official version. E.g. in the intro, both acoustic guitars are centered in the Hunky Dory version whereas they are clearly present in the left and right channels in the BOWPROMO version. Also note the acoustic guitar throughout the entire song on the BOWPROMO, which has been completely faded in the verses on Hunky Dory.
It Ain't Easy: this song was possibly already recorded before 'Changes' and 'Life On Mars', as the latter two are not included on the BOWPROMO album. Of course they would have been very likely candidates to secure Bowie a record deal. 'It Ain't Easy' ended up in 1972 on Ziggy Stardust, in an identical version.
Queen Bitch: this tribute to The Velvet Underground appeared in slightly different form on Hunky Dory. Compared to the latter, the BOWPROMO lacks any reverb on the vocals but adds some reverb on Mick Ronson's riff. The BOWPROMO version can identified easiest by the very subdued 'Hmmm' at the very end, which apparently later was overdubbed on the Hunky Dory version.
Quicksand: the intro of the Hunky Dory version is in mono and only opens up to stereo at 0'51" ('I'm frightened by the total goal...'); the intro on the BOWPROMO is in full stereo from the very start. Furthermore, some additional strings have been added to the Hunky Dory version at 3'20" ('If I don't explain what you ought to know...').
Bombers-Andy Warhol intro: the version of 'Bombers' that in 1990 ended up as a bonus track on the Rykodisc edition of Hunky Dory is a rather tinny mix, lacking in bass. Besides, at 0'23" ("Seemed a good idea to drop a bomb on the wasteland here") and 1'12" ("So the Pentagon sent a cable and the Queen a telegram") into the Ryko mix, there are extra drum beats that do not sound convincingly intentional. As can be heard in the audio excerpt, these 'jumps' are absent on the BOWPROMO album. Also interesting is that 'Bombers' develops into an alternate version of the intro to 'Andy Warhol', which runs slightly longer, as it includes a strum on the acoustic guitar and a few more laughs of Bowie at the very end. 'Bombers' and part of the intro to 'Andy Warhol' have appeared on the ChangesThreeDavidRobertJones (Grace AZL1-1984) bootleg LP. The 'Andy Warhol' intro is also found on MissingLinksOneZiggy (Icon One), but the sound quality of both recordings is rather poor.
Mother Don't Be Frightened: the first of five Dana Gillespie tracks on side B. This song, which was produced and arranged by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, appeared in 1974 on her Weren't Born A Man album.
Andy Warhol: originally written by David for Dana Gillespie, musically backed by The Spiders and produced by Bowie/Ronson. This is a quite different, shorter version (2'45" vs 3'02"), compared to what appeared on Weren't Born A Man. The intro is faded in and the mix is more direct and less echoey than on that album. The outro on the BOWPROMO also is much shorter and less guitar-heavy. This version has recently been released on Oh! You Pretty Things.
Never Knew: released on Dana Gillespie's Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle and reissued on Andy Warhol.
All Cut Up On You: this is a much shorter version (3'23" vs 4'12") than on Weren't Born A Man.
Lavender Hill: this ballad was not released until the 1994 Andy Warhol CD.

Recording details: Recorded at Trident Studios, London

Lyra Helikon M/C Cartridge
Denon PMA 8500 (M/C phono section)
ESI Systems Juli@ A/D
Adobe Audition 1.5 / 3.0

Method:
- Record cleaned on Vpi machine.
- Audio sampled at 96/32 float.
- Filter to roll-off frequencies below 20 HZ (only below audible frequencies).
Audio restoration:
- 'Younglove' decrackling scripted method throughout.
- Manual declick and deglitch.
- All whole sides normalized to 100% NEVER using compression or limiting.

Synopsis: A very clean copy that actually used to belong to Dana Gillespie herself and according to her never got played until I had it briefly in the office whilst putting it on eBay for a friend (it sold for 2400 GBP!!!) In all respects a fine example of a standard EMI 1970's pressing. The restoration work needed to be careful due to the presence of a few large clicks but really nothing to bother complaining about. Artwork: Annoyingly I don't have the original scans anymore (the burglary you know...) so the art I have provided comes from a scan of the CD case I originally made for my DVD-A copy, others from the internet. Never mind, it's the music you're really after isn't it? Enjoy!

David Bowie: Toy 2001 (Unreleased Album) FLAC

Toy LP Front
(vinyl rip - true lossless 11 songs)
Liberated bootleg (eBay sourced)
Label: ISO /Columbia COL 5020001 1
Audio Source: Studio.
Lineage: LP --> Audacity --> WAV --> CEP2 --> FLAC 8
Number of Discs: 1
Artwork: included
Total running time: 49m 10s

Notes: Ripped from vinyl, declicked manually in CEP2, lineage checked for MP3 ancestry - CDDA 99% probable, (screenshots included)

Info: I bought this to see if the tracks were from the MP3 source, and was pleased to find they weren't. The LP arrived the same day as my replacement stylus, so this is a fresh transfer with a pristine needle.

Baby Loves That Way (original track 3);
Conversation Piece (original track 5) and
You've Got a Habit Of Leaving (original track 11)
Removed tracks as non-compliant with Dime Policy:

Afraid (3'28"): another new song recorded for Toy which later appeared on Heathen. The original Toy version of this song has a slightly different instrumentation and additional backing vocals. However, David's original vocal has been maintained on the Heathen version. Essentially, the Heathen version is a remix, not a re-recording. Most obviously, it lacks the Tony Visconti string arrangement.
Toy (4'46"): the third new song for Toy. It was offered as a free download (re-titled 'Your Turn To Drive') to customers who ordered their copy of Reality online from HMV. Later it was made available as an 'exclusive track' in the iTunes Music Store. The title 'Toy' remains a mystery to me!
Shadow Man (4'40"): this delicate re-recording of a 1971 demo is the highlight of the Toy album. A slightly longer version (4'48"), with an additional string section, was officially released on both EC editions of the 'Slow Burn' CD-single (ISO/Columbia COL 672744 1 and COL 672744 2) and on the UK 'Everyone Says 'Hi'' single (ISO/Columbia 673134 3). Its use as a B-side certainly does not do it justice.

The removed tracks were because they were MP3 sourced or official.

PLEASE READ THE FIRST COMMENT BEFORE CHOOSING TO DOWNLOAD -dave

OU: This was recently transfered and is unaltered and un-EQ'd. The way you have it, is the way the master cassettes are. Special thanks to Joe Maloney for making this recording available. I've altered nothing apart from adding this info file and some artwork.
Guys, this is the daddy of all Ziggy recordings against which all others are based. It's not perfect some say it could do with some EQ, but it's by far the best Ziggy Stardust audience recording that has ever been done. So I'll leave it to you to rate the sound, but trust me this is a gem. In my opinion this with some professional tinkering and remastering could be released officially.
Remember Bowie is a currently recording artist so support him by buying his cd's and merchandise. As stated above our thanks must go to Joe Maloney for taping this show (and others). This is to be played at MAXIMUM Volume!! Enjoy

OU: This is roughly a one hour recording from the Sound + Vision tour rehearsals taken directly from the soundboard. The date and venue are unknown, but generally thought to be New York in the winter of 1990. This is the so called "DAT version" of the recording, and is better quality than the material used on the silver "Overtures And Beginners" CD.

David Bowie: John Peel 1971 (FM Vinyl Rip) FLAC

bt001cda
Ziggy 2 vinyl rip

Label: Tune-In (TUNE IN 002)
Audio Source: mostly radio broadcast, see info
Lineage: vinly rip > CDR > FLAC 4
Number of Discs: 4
Artwork: included
Total running time: 33:02

Info: Nothing that unusual here, with the first nine tracks from the John Peel In Concert recording, from Paris Studio: recorded 3rd June 1971 and broadcast on the 20th. The final track's from the Marc TV show, 9th September 1977 (sneeze and you'll miss it).
Now that the Peel show's been in wide circulation for a goodly while, it's hard to remember that back in the early eighties it was rocking-horse shit! I had the grottiest of grotty tapes of it - the managed to buy a copy of the original bootleg in an auction.
It was a lovely clean copy. I plugged the record deck (not sure which) into a Hauppauge Win-TV card as a pre-amp, then used the Acoustic Solutions wave studios to chop up the tracks. No other changes made, so the sound is as per the LP (which is notably inferior to the subsequent CD versions, with distinct hiss there).

1. Queen Bitch
2. Bombers
3. Supermen
4. Looking For A Friend
5. Almost Grown
6. Kooks

David Bowie: BBC 1969-1972 (Soundboard) FLAC

ff
Title: Starman In Session
Source: Ex Soundboard Recording
Lineage: Silver Rarities (SIRA 93) Boot 1CD > EAC > FLAC

This is a splendid release, a copy of a CDR that was sold in 1993. Well, this Italian disc is the first pressed issue, so it will count as the original. The sound quality is excellent, and all songs are BBC recordings. The cover is a bit blurry, but it doesn't matter when the disc is packed with interesting stuff! Great!

02: When I Live My Dream
03: The Little Bombardier
04: Silly Boy Blue

David Bowie: Madison 1974(Soundboard?) FLAC

136417
University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, USA.
10 October 1974
Very good quality, mixing desk? recording - I uploaded this quite a while ago and am just now posting it - the OU says that it may be a soundboard.

CD-r (of "1974" CD set) > Audacity > CD Wave > TLH > FLAC

01 Intro - Memory Of A Free Festival
02 Rebel Rebel
03 John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)
04 Sorrow
05 Changes
06 1984
07 Moonage Daydream
08 When You Rock'n'roll With Me
09 Love Me Do-The Jean Genie
10 Diamond Dogs
11 Young Americans
12 Can You Hear Me
13 It's Gonna Be Me
14 Somebody Up There Likes Me
15 Suffragette City
16 Rock'n'roll Suicide

"Good evening Madison, it's a pleasure and privilege to play here. Thank you for having me."
Bowie clearly enjoys playing here, and the response he gets, hence the above accolade during When You Rock n Roll With Me.
Like with the recent New York 73 gig, this is a minor re-work...indeed less has been done here, simply a little widening of the sound. It involves double the signal in Audacity and widening the picture. The original is out there for those who prefer 'untouched' recordings, but this sounds better to my ears, and very good in headphones.
"This song is for girls...[ ] ...I don't write many love songs", he annouces as Can You Hear Me starts.
The gig ends with Bowie announcing before playing Rock N Roll Suicide -
"It's the first time that I've been here, and I'm coming back! You're so sweet
Time takes a cigarette..."
Towards the end of the song he adds - "oh I love you...[ ] you're wonderful, I bless you, I love you, thank you. I'll see you again soon, I mean it!".
Beautiful....and the audience are ecstatic. Puts paid to some of the accusations of him being cold and detached!
It's a very good quality recording, so enjoy!
Thanks to all involved in the recording and sharing of this recording, in particular David Bowie and his band...

Mike Garson (piano, mellotron), Carlos Alomar (guitar), Earl Slick (lead guitar), Emir Ksasan (bass guitar), Dennis Davis (drums), Pablo Rosario (percussion), David Sanborn (alto sax, flute), Richard Grando (baritone sax flute), Michael Kamen (electric piano, moog, oboe), Geoff McCormack, Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, Jean Fineberg, Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler and Luther Vandross (backing vocals).
