“This week there was unexpected debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which should almost feel like an open audition for any conductor. After the Italian Antonio Pappano had reported sick due to a shoulder injury, Karel Mark Chichon (London, 1971) was asked to replace him at very short notice. Chichon’s talent for music drama was revealed on Thursday in the overture to Verdi's La forza del destino. Unerringly he held the suspense, and had a firm grip of the orchestra. In Borodin's Second Symphony he gave it the right high romance of a fairytale Russia but with his heart on his sleeve. The slow movement sung and sizzled. Audition succeeded."
