Lou Reed: Chicago 1978 (Soundboard) FLAC

lou_chi78_Front
VENUE Park West
CITY Chicago, IL
DATE April 14, 1978
SOURCE Probably Pre-FM or SBD (8 tracks) and FM (1 track)
4-Eyed Freak workshop
Artwork: Included

01 - Gimmie Gimmie Some Good Times 2:49
02 - Satellite of Love 6:06
03 - Leave Me Alone 9:38
04 - Walk on the Wild Side 6:25
05 - Coney Island Baby 11:16
06 - Dirt 8:43 *
07 - Street Hassle 10:47
08 - Sweet Jane 4:58
09 - Rock 'n Roll 6:09
Total duration: 66:54
* FM sourced

LineUp (as introduced at the beginning of "Street Hassle"):
Lou Reed - guitar, bass, piano, vocals
Stuart Heinrich - guitar
Michael Fonfara - keyboards
Marty Fogel - saxophone
Ellard "Moose" Boles - bass
Michael Suchorsky - drums
Angela Howard, Chrissy Faith - background vocals

Lineage: Tracks 6: FM (Onkyo TX8511) > SoundBlaster (Live! 24 bit External) > WAV (CD Wave Editor @ 16bit) > flac > WAV > Level adjusted and Equalisation
Other tracks, most probably: Soundboard or Pre-FM > ??? > SHN > WAV > Channel balanced (+2.1dB on left channel)
Then: Retracking > SBE fixed (SHNTools) > FLAC (TLH)

OU Notes: Two versions of this show are already circulating. The first one with unknown lineage is most probably pre-FM sourced as shown by the frequency analysis. It doesn't include "Dirt". The second version is coming from the recent XRT rebroadcast, it includes " Dirt" but omits "Street Hassle".
Sound quality-wise, my personal preference goes to the first version so that's the one i took as a basis. However, the level between the two channels was quite different. The left channel was boosted by 2.1dB so that they are now balanced.
"Dirt" from the FM capture was reworked so that it sounds as close as possible to the pre-FM version. Its RMS level was adjusted so that it matches with the overall level of the pre-FM version and it sounded more trebbley so it was slightly equalised accordingly. Then it was smoothly reinserted between "Coney Island Baby" and "Street Hassle", where it probably belongs according to most concert setlists in that period.
I also added the last three seconds taken from the FM version (Lou thanking the audience) that were missing at the end of pre-FM's "Rock 'n Roll" to make this new version as complete as possible.
The artwork shamelessly downloaded from http://www.badreputation.de/ was updated to display the new setlist.

Lou Reed: Los Angeles 1976 (FM) FLAC

"Live At The Roxy - Cassette Version"
Artwork New Front
1st December 1976
Live at the Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles
KMET FM Radio Broadcast

This concert has appeared in at least four guises over time, each with slightly different track listings/times:
1. Claim 2 Fame [CD source]
2. Super Golden Radio Shows [CD source]
3. Sweet Lou [LP source]
4. Cassette Source [Gordon L's source!]

Lineage : I downloaded this new torrent from the Cooking For The Down Five blog as flac files which listed it as a "complete first generation tape of the KMET FM Radio Broadcast".
After that I put it through Magic Audio Cleaning Lab > CD > EAC > Wav > Flac Frontend > flac8

OU: In my opinion the sound is very good, and to my ears is better than the Claim 2 Fame CD. It sounds like it could even be the source for that CD as it has extended versions of many songs including the various DJ chat that has been edited out of the Claim 2 Fame CD.

I have made some alterations to this cassette version:
a) I have boosted the left channel (due to drop in level) on Kicks (from 7:13), She's My Best Friend, I'm Waiting For The Man, You Wear It So Well, Claim To Fame, Coney Island Baby (from 1:25).
b) I very slightly gave extra punch to most songs as they sounded slightly thin.
c) I smoothed over some of the joins between tracks (ie this shows that it wasn't taped continuously off the radio) and a couple of drop-outs.
d) I moved the start of some tracks (this, and (c) above, is why the timings are now different to the original blog files).
e) I faded out the ends of both CD's slightly so they didn't end abruptly.
f) I removed Heroin which has been officially released (on Between Thought And Expression boxset).

The tracklisting is:
Disc 1 (55:42)
01: Intro (9:24)
02: Sweet Jane (4:54)
03: I Believe In Love (3:50)
04: Lisa Says (7:10)
05: Kicks (11:40)
06: She's My Best Friend (5:45)
07: I'm Waiting For The Man (12:57)

Disc 2 (43:26)
01: A Sheltered Life (10:32)
02: You Wear It So Well (4:58)
03: Claim To Fame (3:01)
04: Vicious Circle (4:29)
05: Walk On The Wild Side (11:17)
06: Coney Island Baby (9:06)

According to The Rock And Roll Animal webpage the whole concert was:
1. Intro Jam
2. Sweet Jane
3. I Believe In Love
4. Lisa Says
5. Kicks
6. She's My Best Friend
7. I'm Waiting For The Man
8. A Sheltered Life
9. You Were It So Well
10. Claim To Fame
11. Vicious Circle
12. Walk On The Wild Side
13. Coney Island Baby
14. Rock And Roll Heart
15. Charley's Girl
16. Kill Your Sons
17. Satellite Of Love
18. Berlin
19. Temporary Thing
20. Ladies Pay
21. Heroin (appears on Between Thought And Expression official boxset)
22. White Light/White Heat

I have included new artwork as well as including the artwork originally included.
Enjoy!

OU: I received this in a postal trade ages ago. So the lineage is on a DVDR in Wav format > flac8 > you
This is a report that appeared in the music press shortly after this gig. Looking back now nearly 40 years after the event this amongst Bowie fans has become a legendary concert:
Record Mirror - 15th July 1972
LIVE! DAVID BOWIE By Charles Webster
ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL: David Bowie will soon become the greatest entertainer Britain has ever known. His performance on Saturday at the "Save The Whale" Friends of the Earth concert was a triumph for the showmanship as well as music. His talent seems unlimited and he looks certain to become the most important person in pop music on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a real star, incorporating the things that made people like Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and The Beatles so very special.
The atmosphere that surrounded him at the Festival Hall could be felt so positively that even before he appeared on stage it was obvious that somebody unique was about to take the platform. With his Spiders From Mars band, featuring another man, Mick Ronson, destined for superstardom, he performed a selection of numbers from his "Hunky Dory" and "Ziggy Stardust" albums and added to the delight of the 3,000 strong audience, "Space Oddity" and the wistful "Amsterdam." After a dozen numbers, Bowie was joined by Lou Reed, once of the legendary Velvet Underground, for three numbers, and I had the feeling that as much as David wanted to pay tribute to Reed, the inclusion of the American into the act was quite unnecessary.
The people were there to Save the Whale and to see Bowie, who compere Kenny Everett described as the "next biggest thing to God," - a mere mortal next to our hero from Mars - seemed to destroy the illusion that Bowie had spent the entire evening creating. Marmalade opened the show and suffered amplification trouble from the word go. It was a shame for lead guitarist Hughie Nicholson, who was making his farewell performance with the band. The other act on the bill, the JSD Band were very funny, but I was left with the feeling that they should have devoted more time to playing music than telling humorous anecdotes.
If you like Bowie you'll love this. The sound is acceptable for a 1972 audience recording of a Ziggy Stardust show. Hard to rate as it's all subjective but I'll say 6/10
Share freely but never sell. Bowie is a current recording artist so please support him by buying his official merchandise/cd's etc.
Please enjoy

Lou Reed: Boston 1976 (FM) FLAC

Artwork Front
"I Never Said I Was Nice"
29th October 1976
Live at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts
WBCN FM Radio Broadcast

Lineage: I (OU) downloaded this from the Cooking For The Down Five blog as flac which listed it as from a cassette of the WBCN FM Radio Broadcast. After that I put it through Magic Audio Cleaning Lab > CD > EAC > Wav > Flac Frontend > flac8
I have not altered the sound at all which is already very good. The only things I did was fade in the start of the first song slightly less abruptly, fade out the end song's crowd clapping/tuning of both cd's (they originally stopped suddenly), boost the volume of the inter-song crowd noise/tuning, and remove 38 seconds of the DJ's chatter that didn't relate to this concert.
I have included new artwork as well as including the artwork originally included on the Cooking For The Down Five blog with its misspellings etc.
Enjoy!

Disc 1 (43:15)
1. A Sheltered Life
2. The Kids
3. Claim To Fame
4. Vicious Circle
5. Walk On The Wild Side
6. Coney Island Baby

Disc 2 (43:40)
1. Satellite Of Love
2. How Do You Think It Feels
3. You Wear It So Well
4. Temporary Thing
5. Ladies Pay
6. Heroin

According to The Rock And Roll Animal webpage the whole 2 hour 20 minute concert was taped as an audience recording - I have Kicks (8:49), She's My Best Friend (7:09), and Sister Ray (15:42) and their sound is much worse than these FM recordings. The full tracklisting was:
1. Intro Jam
2. Sweet Jane
3. I Believe In Love
4. Lisa Says
5. Kicks
6. She's My Best Friend
7. I'm Waiting For The Man
8. A Sheltered Life

Laurie Anderson Lou Reed and John Zorn: Antwerp 2010 (FM) FLAC

2
Anderson, Reed, Zorn
"Improvisations"
Jazz Middelheim
Antwerp, Belgium 2009-08-13

Laurie Anderson - Viool, electronica
Lou Reed - Gitaar
Jon Zorn - Alt Sax
FM -> AVS Audio Recorder -> WAV -> FLAC(8)

1. First improvisation
2. Second improvisation
3. Applaus + comment from dj
4. Third improvisation
5. Outro

Also included, the interview with Laurie Anderson

OU Note: Yes, it is Lou Reed, but don't expect a rock concert... It is free jazz improvisation, or even better, free improvisation, I don't feel any "jazz" inside this performance. Lou Reed, his wife Laurie Anderson and Jon Zorn came over from the U.S. to Antwerp just to give this single concert. Amazing. I wonder how many people will grab this. And I wonder from the people who grab it, how many will like it...

16 Street Hassle
17 Rock 'n' Roll
18 You Keep Me Hanging On

OU: Here's another one from the 80 tour, for all you 2 "Growing up in public" fans out there ;).
I think this is a radio broadcast. It was televised, but not "So alone" - which is on here. Great quality.

Sounds more like a TV to me. Track 1 has some sound problems, probably due to the age of the tape it was recorded on. Afterwards there are only few bad spots in the tape. In the beginning and at the end of several songs audience noise is overlayed. 'So Alone' is not even 20 seconds long and covered in audience noise.

lineage: Midnight Beat silver CD MB CD133 - EAC - wav - flac (level 8) - you

The setlists for these early 1977 concerts were among the most varied of Lou's career. Although the shows were ostensibly to promote "Rock And Roll Heart", they didn't usually feature many songs from that LP. In reality, Lou was trying out the ideas and songs which would eventually form "Street Hassle". Of the songs on this (incomplete?) recording from Groningen, "Better Get Up And Dance" and "Affirmative Action (PO #99)" would subsequently be abandoned completely. "Such A Pretty Face" would eventually mutate into "Wait": it would later appear on the "Street Hassle" LP along with "Shooting Star", "Real Good Time Together" and "Gimmie Some Good Times". Lou would never be so unpredictable again!
I dont know where the good folks at Midnight Beat sourced the material for their 1997 "Banging On My Drums" bootleg CD set, but they did a great job. I was more than happy to pay out good money to hear these gems......

David Bowie: The Legendary Lost Tapes 1972-73 (Live/Studio) FLAC

bowie.legendary.lost.tapes.front
Studio & Live Recordings
Lineage: SilverCD--> EAC(secure)--> Flac(level.8)--> HungerCity!
THE LEGENDARY LOST TAPES
The second issue of this material and it is a straight copy of the CD THE LEGENDARY TRIDENT SESSIONS (1998). Even if this CD is a copy of the original CD, the sound quality is a little bit better! -BASSMAN

THE LEGENDARY TRIDENT SESSIONS
Wow! Amazing stuff! A rumour has been circulating that Lou and David joined Mott at at least one session during the recording of the "All The Young Dudes" album, while they were recording Lou's "Transformer" album. Here is the proof. Bowie sings ALL THE YOUNG DUDES and Lou sings SWEET JANE. They also participate on most of the other songs, playing guitar, sax or singing back up vocals. I had a tape of this session before, and I can't understand why the running order has been changed? The sound quality is excellent, but a little bit distorted (just as on the original tape!). The Glasgow show is remastered, and the sound quality is actually very good! The boring thing is that it isn't complete, and according to the cover the cuts between the songs comes from the the original tape. That isn't true! I have the tape and it doesn't feature any other cuts than the cut between side A and B. I also doubt that ROCK'N'ROLL SUICIDE is from the Glasgow show? I have never heard of any tape that lasts longer than SUFFRAGETTE CITY. Even the songs are roughly cut on the CD, not only the space of time between them! There are two missing songs, and they are LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER / THE JEAN GENIE / THE WIDTH OF A CIRCLE should have come after FIVE YEARS. Anyway, because of the Mott session this is a great disc.

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
This show needed a fair amount of work, mostly due to tape deterioration and/or multiple transfers. The frequency response needed to be adjusted moderately. Due to tape transfers, bad storage/tape, etc, a fair amount of low and high-end frequency loss has occured. I made a few level cuts and boosts in sections of the recording where the levels apruptly increase and decrease. There are drop-outs here and there that have been corrected where possible. It's worth noting that New Age (track 6) has a fairly significant cut about half way through thr song. There is then a few seconds of silence. This silence has been removed. Enjoy the show, now more enjoyable with the layer of mude gone!

Lou Reed: Complete Stockholm 1974 (Pre-FM + Vinyl Source) FLAC

lr19740514d1-front
May 14, 1974
Konserthuset
Stockholm, Sweden

Complete set - correct speed and running order.
This copy here is edited together into the correct show running order. Quite a few other minor vinyl clicks were repaired (mostly in Sister Ray) - Sorry but when vinyl is in the lineage, there are always more minor improvements that can be done with the Pro Tools pencil tool... A short dropout in Vicious was also smoothed out. Great quality recording now even better...

disc 1 - main set - 74:42
101 [10:31] Intro > Sweet Jane
102 [07:18] Vicious
103 [04:03] Ride Sally Ride
104 [11:11] Heroin
105 [03:49] Lady Day
106 [08:32] I'm Waiting For The Man
107 [07:43] Oh Jim
108 [04:41] Walk On The Wild Side
109 [11:09] Rock and Roll
110 [05:33] White Light/White Heat
112 [00:12] thanks and crowd before encore

disc 2 - encore - 8:10
201 [08:10] Sister Ray (complete)

The Band
Lou Reed - vocals
Danny Weis - guitar
Prakash John - bass guitar
Penti "Whitey" Glan - drums
Michael Fonfara - keyboards

Other notes: The Swedish state radio company gave Lou and his new live band studio time for rehearsals and then the first show of the tour at the Concerthouse in Stockholm was recorded for FM brodcast for the radioshow "Tonkraft".

I burned this with just the encore on a second disc, but the show can be split elsewhere or left as the full show on a hard disk if desired (the disc transition is seamless).

Sources:
1. Second generation pre-broadcast 1/2 track reel recorded at 7.5 ips speed.
2. Second (or possibly third) generation pre-broadcast 1/4 track reel recorded at 7.5 ips speed.
