Well we hope that you have enjoyed all of the Steely Dan/Donald Fagen shows in this summer's "Lurker Ray's Summer Sampler" and in honor of the start of the NYC Beacon run, here is the unreleased "Lunch With Gina Lasts Forever" from the 2003 tour and in a separate torrent, my last unreleased Fagen Solo tour show that also happens to be the last show of that tour. I am getting very busy again now that summer is over and I won't be posting any more of my shows until after the current tour, perhaps I will get some free time during Thanksgiving, but I make no promises. Much thanks goes to WombBoy & Buttmanos for their hard work in bringing you these shows.

STEELY DAN - LUNCH WITH GINA LASTS FOREVER
LIVE - UNIVERSAL AMPITHEATER HOLLYWOOD OCTOBER 1 & 2 2003
In the late summer of 2003 I started to date Gina. We met at Baja Fresh during our mutual lunch periods that my new corporate job at the time had luckily scheduled during the same times. These endless afternoons started on the day I met her. Gina was a very hot gal but she was always late. A real deal breaker for me, even with LA traffic and even if you are as hot as Gina. After 9/11 Universal had beefed up its security to nonsense levels where you got TSA-wanded before you entered or had to walk through a scanner, much like the Beacon in NYC still is today sadly. We figured that Gina's purse and the smallest device possible, the Sony MiniDisc was our best route. "So what time do you want to meet at Universal?", asked Gina. Oh no, I am not going to miss any of these shows especially after having the luxury of seeing 2 nights at Roseland sans Gina because she would have nothing to do with General Admission. Here are your tickets doll, meet me at the Steely Dan show, and PLEASE try and be on time, remember we are going to try and record these shows and YOU have the equipment. The first set (remember when they used to do that?) was just about over and I'm about to go postal when she waltzes in. "Sorry I'm late, traffic was a bitch". Yeah right. So we used the intermission to set up the mics and equipment. Second night? You guessed it, when will she get here? Maybe later, maybe never. Gina was late again. But hey after nearly 8 years of you not being able to hear these recordings of two kick ass shows, it was Gina after all who smuggled in the equipment for us.
Not many live recordings of Lunch With Gina out there and this one will kick your ass. The ULTRA rare dueling guitars of Dean Parks with Jon on one of my favorite versions of My Old School are just smokestack lightning. There were no special guests at Roseland and after nearly a month after the Roseland 2003 second leg gigs I think the band is much tighter and the shows were better executed at Universal. You can listen for yourselves. Because these recordings along with the soundboard from the complete 2nd night show (too bad we don't have the first night off the soundboard which for the first time is included here in its complete second set glory is just sick with Dean Parks!) are about as close as you are going to get to hearing what the two night stand at Roseland sounded like 8 years ago. The setlists for the two nights at Universal are exactly the same as Roseland. I had a blast at Roseland but there were too many drunken loud sing-a-longs for my money and that alone could be reason for the lack of Roseland shows recorded. Like I said the band had been out on this final leg for a while and were tight as shit. FM with Dean Parks is so frickin LA Cool again with another amazing back and forth with the "new" kid Jon Herington. And enjoy two crackling versions of Parker's Band and the two smoldering versions of the MIA this tour Don't Take Me Alive. That Jon Herington guy, yeah they might want to keep this guy.
If you can't come to NYC next week, then why not in the mean time enjoy my various recordings posted this summer of The Bear, Everything Must Go, Night By Night, Lunch With Gina, Your Gold Teeth, Parker's Band and Green Earrings and the final show of the Donald Fagen 2006 Solo Tour. Salud.
Enjoy!

Advertised as the first "Vox Populi" night of the 2011 Shuffle Diplomacy Tour. It was more like go to iTunes and buy one of the various Steely Dan Greatest Hits Compilations and "SET YOUR iPOD TO SHUFFLE DIPLOMACY" and then go jog with show folk on the sand. Very enjoyable show and we had none of the crowd problems that plagued Daspyknows valiant effort.
Michael Leonhart's beautiful and elegant "Wade In The Water" solo during Dirty Work is worth the price of admission alone. He is channeling Herb Alpert circa 1969. Close your eyes and you'll be there, it's not cheap, but this is free. Enjoy.
While touring in the new century, Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards) and Walter Becker (guitar) have been supported on stage by the fine musicians below -

Some really nice and often smokin' versions of Your Gold Teeth, Green Earrings, Everything Must Go, FM, and what is quickly becoming my favorite version of Night By Night all recorded very early on this tour but with 3 nights of prior workouts. So important in my opinion. Just because this band can play a tune at the drop of a hat doesn't mean it's not much better and kills with some actual show time run through of songs. Just a stellar Josie, Reelin', Bodhisattva and Kid Charlemagne.
Be forewarned that there is a mad whistler during Dirty Work and The Band Intros.

Show Notes: Picked up this tape for $24.99 in a small shop in Chicago in 1999, and it’s been sitting on my shelf for way too long. With the recent flourish of uncirculated and new Steely Dan/Donald Fagen Band ROIOs on TDD, it was worth it to me to break this bad boy out, rip the audio and put it out there, as I am quite sure that it has not been done before. Hence the "uncirculated" nature of this recording.
The source is an audience-shot video; therefore it's an audience audio recording. It has a clear sound but there’s lots of room-reverb that to some may be overwhelming. The snare drum sounds huge! There is some analog noise - crackling that's on the source tape. Otherwise the sound is nice, warm and saturated (as is typical for a VHS - a medium that did much better with sound than video). It's worth a listen without the distraction of viewing. For now.
If anyone has experience capturing video and authoring DVDs with menus, etc., I'd like to hear about it, as I am hoping we can follow up with a DVD torrent of this show sometime this year.
I scanned the tape-case artwork and it is included with the torrent, as is a picture of the tape, itself. (If anyone wants to take a stab at some real artwork, by all means do so.)
The title "(Bull)dozin' at the Knick" is an obviously play on the Grateful Dead live album "Dozin at the Knick" culled from the Dead's 1990 run of shows at the then-brand new venue. Plus, near the end of the 1993 Steely Dan Tour, the band was IMO bulldozin' through the hits quite effortlessly. See,for example, Black Friday, which is surely powerhouse on this recording. I've never heard it so uptempo yet so relaxed.
The runner-up title was "Citizen Knick" (...like Citizen Dick...), but that didn't make the cut for obvious reasons. The reference might be TOO obscure.
Some interesting notes about the venue:
http://www.nytimes.com/1988/11/01/nyregion/knickerbocker-is-name-for-new-albany-arena.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Union_Center
Finally, What a band this was! Erkine, Zingg, POTTER!?!? etc. etc.
Also, this show features Curtis King (*NOT* King Curtis) on backing vocals. What's that? A male backup vocalist live with the Dan in the later era? It's true. I think he was subbing for Catherine Russell for this show and possibly a few others toward the end of the 1993 tour. He does a nice job as far as I can tell. You can hear different harmonies for some tunes if you listen carefully enough, though he was given no solos.
***More uncirculated shows to follow.***
It's a good time to be a dan-fan. Enjoy.

OU: Hello Everyone: As promised, part two of a musical extravaganza that began the previous evening with Steely Dan guitarist Jon Herington and his band, with special guests, at an intimate performance in Mystic. Steely Dan always puts on a great show and this night was no exception. The musicianship of the band is stellar as usual. The setlist is typical of the tour with a couple of outstanding segments during Show Biz Kids and Godwhacker. All in all a good recording with crowd noise limited mostly to between songs. I attenuated the loud clapping from the two seated to either side of me where possible and between tracks. I also added a little bit of eq to boost the treble.
Enjoy!

Show Notes: Obviously not a complete recording, and it has its flaws. My first taping since 2006 with new gear, so things were bound to happen. Not helping was the venue's Gestapo-like security, one of whom kept his eye on me the whole night, as he thought I had a camera in my bag, when all I really had was a change of clothes, umbrella, cell phone and...oh yeah...a TASCAM DR-05 digital audio recorder.
Long before showtime, when I took my seat: "Excuse me sir is there any camera equipment in that bag?" I was third row, flying solo, so I suppose he thought I was up to "no good." The idiot.
I was directly in front of the stage-left PA stacks but I had to keep the recorder on the floor as that one pesky security guard kept shining his flashlight at my face. The moron was convinced I was going to snap some pictures. As the Tascam was on the floor in my bag with the bag's zipper open, the recording is far from the crystalline capture I was hoping for. It was very bassy, and I had to EQ out a significant amount of low range, as well as scoop out some brutal mids around 340Hz; there was a lot of sonic "garbage" there. It could still benefit from revised EQing and I'd be happy to send the raw files to anyone wishing to tackle it someday.
If that wasn’t bad enough, I was surrounded by buffoons: a mad clapper to my right, a beefcake whistler behind me and talkers in front of me. All simpletons; all sadly immortalized on this recording.
As far as the show goes, it was really tight. The band was on.
While I was happy to step away and work on this incomplete and far-from-perfect recording, stay tuned for more Lurker Ray recordings coming soon. We're working on them. They are certainly gems in the rough.
The recording is my small contribution to the fans.

In honor of the start of the Steely Dan 2011 "Shuffle Diplomacy" Tour next week, here is an UNCIRCULATED, never before released "blast from the past" celebrating it's 15th year this year. So what took so long? Well I've been recording Steely Dan shows since 1992 and time hasn't always been on my side. I turned 40 not too long ago
and since I never got a reponse back from a major player in amazing Steely Dan hard-to-find live recordings and obscurities I've wanted to trade with for years, I've finally decided to start sharing my stuff and giving back to the greater Dandom community. With the invaluable help of buttmanos, I will be releasing some pretty amazing Steely Dan/Donald Fagen stuff, if I do say so myself, in the coming months. ALL of my stuff is uncirculated.
The 1996 Steely Dan "Art Crimes" Tour played the larger sheds across the USA and The World Music Theatre fit the bill, with a capacity of 28,589. Really a great show with Wayne Krantz & Ricky Lawson. This is second to last night they played "Any Major Dude" live EVER until 13 years later during the "Rent Party Tour" in selected cities.
For some reason they dropped it after the Alpine Valley, WI show the next night. To this day I still don't know why? It was so great this night. Excellent versions of the early "Jack Of Speed" and a great take of the unreleased, "Cash Only Island" on this August night in Chicago in 1996. And just listen to Krantz & Becker tear it up on guitars on a stellar "Midnight Cruiser". One of the best "My Old Schools" you will ever hear. Krantz is just jaw-dropping.
Dedicated to Jim "Hoops" McKay and to the late "La Grande Dame de Dandom," Maggi McCoy.
You can hear Walter give a major dude shout-out to Hoops during the Band intros and listen for Donald dedicating "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" to Maggi after they play it. Hoop's invaluable Steely Dan resourse, "The Dandom Bluebook" celebrated it's 10th Anniversary last week. Sorry it took 15 years to get this to you Hoops. It's a shame about me. Happy Anniversary!

A never before released Donald Fagen show!!?? I've been waiting over 6 years to share this show and debunk and clear up a "cloud" that has been hanging over this amazing night for almost 7 years now. I guess it all started with two lousy reviews after the show and we were left wondering, "Did these two tin eared reviewers EVEN see the same show the rest of us did??!"
http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117930051?categoryid=1266&cs=1
I don't know if these lame reviews finally put Donald Fagen over the edge or not but soon after this was posted on the "Lexi Says" page over at donaldfagen.com
NOTE - These remarks have since been taken down:
"It's always the same with these L.A. audiences. We had so much fun in Vegas and Temecula with all the dancing drunk people. In L.A., with all the too-cool-for-school music biz people out there, you can't seem to get much of a response, so you start working too hard, become unmusical, you start feeling like an a--hole, like Sammy Davis, Jr. or something. Sometimes I wish my mom had taught me to tap... it would have come in handy."
"Also, I guess they've never been to a jazz club, no interest in soloing as an art, no attention span, really. They don't have a clue. They're waiting for some old wormy radio hits from when they were humping some girl on the hood of a Datsun Z car. I wish I was dead."
OUCH. But finally we are going prove Fagen wrong. All recorded from the left front row of the balcony. How do you tell one of your musical heros that he was being a cry baby and a total arrogant tool? I've lived here for over 13 years now and I
can tell you that on this night this "L.A. too-cool-for-school" crowd went ape shit. And you can finally hear it for yourself. It was one of the MOST appreciative and giving crowds of the 4 shows I saw that tour. And this was on a Monday night in L.A. !!
We would have LOVED to have been able to dance! But the Wiltern staff shut that down. Listen to the cock block usher early on. "We aint having none of that tonight" And this L.A. crowd still brought it. On a Monday night.
The late Rajah Of Erase and Miss Gretchen from the dandom.com Bluebook threw a "Donfest" over at Opus before the show where guests included the Co-Founder of the great Steely Dan Fanzine "Metal Leg", Pete Fogel. Just listen to this "quiet" crowd when they sing, "Won't You pour me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen". Donald says we don't like soloing? Really? That's funny, just listen to this crowd during "Maxine" and during a stellar "Mary Shut The Garden Door". Listen for the applause for Walt Weiskopf. We haven't been to a jazz club and we don't like soloing? Well what is that going on after each solo during "Mis'ry & The Blues"?!
"You're a funny bunch" - yeah, right this crowd is quiet and one big douche. Over at "Lexi Says" at DF.com after a bad review Lexi always writes a scathing post about the reviewer tragically dying with their head up their ... Well after listening to this recording you will clearly find that it was in fact Donald Fagen himself who had his head up his a-- as to what he perceived from this "L.A. crowd" this Monday night in March in 2006.
Maybe this "wrong" self consciousness pushed him harder because this was one hell of a damn fine show. Some say, one of the best nights of the tour. One of the best "Here At The Western World" you will ever hear even if you don't like the revamped version. I asked myself should I call this show, "I'm Going To Do It Again, I Liked It So Much" because of the amazing "Home At Last" take or "You're A Funny Bunch"?
I settled on the later. I've split the tracks over two discs and the reason we close disc one with "Goodbye Look" will become very apparent. It clearly is a disc one/side one closer! During the early '90's I often received bootleg cassette tapes that were often marked, "PLAY LOUD". Well, I'm going to say the same thing, "PLAY LOUD". Not because this by any means is a "quiet" recording, but because I was
right in front of the left speaker in the front of the balcony and it saturated the DAT in such a great way. So play it loud, cause that is how it was up in the front of the balcony of the Wiltern that wonderful Monday night.
In the crowd that night: Ted Danson, Jodie Foster, Alan Rosenberg, Marg Helgenberger, Eliott Scheiner and Lee Sklar.
"That band was tight last night, they played like the aces they are. Nothing dragged, not even Black Friday. Keith got a few more licks in there, Carolyn wowed 'em on the Maxine verse, Donald was on it, he was Donald Fagen last night, Maestro and bandleader extraordinaire, no blown lyrics and nary a clam in earshot. He doesn't ad-lib, he don't tell no stories and he don't spank hecklers, he just plays."
-The late Rajah Of Erase via the March 2006 dandom.com Bluebook
"The Wiltern show in LA last night was stellar. The sound was beautifully clear, and the performance flawless and energetic. I think this has been the best on this particular tour so far."
-Gretchen via the March 2006 dandom.com Bluebook
After hearing "Pretzel Logic" on disc two one might agree with her.
Dedicated to the lovely "nor'easter" Miss Gretchen. 'La vita deve andare avanti' - 'Life must carry on'

Elvis Costello: Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz 2010 (Ex FM) FLAC

not the same as the 1993 or 2003 official release
2_o-guest host on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz
-with guest: Marian McPartland
Manhattan Beach Studios
New York, NY
Broadcast Date: 2010-01-10
For more than 25 years, jazz pianist Marian McPartland and her guests have teamed up for an hour of weekly jazz sessions. Whether it's solos, collaboration, reminiscences, or straight talk about influences and style, no two Piano Jazz sessions are ever the same.
More than 500 exciting, talented, jazz professionals (newcomers and all-time favorites) have joined Marian over the years. In fact, Piano Jazz has been hailed as the "definitive" place to hear the greats of jazz.
Why? Piano Jazz hits a perfect balance between historical perspective and sheer entertainment, a formula that has made the series the longest-running national performance program on public radio.
Here the tables are turned, as McPartland sits at the guest bench to discuss her life as a performer and as the host of Piano Jazz. She reminisces about moments from the program’s early days; then, guest host Elvis Costello sings as McPartland plays "Our Love Is Here to Stay."

Steely Dan: London 2000 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

SDhammersmith2000FRONT
10 Sept 2000 Hammersmith Apollo, London, UK
Lineage : CDRs from trade > WAV (EAC secure mode : spectral analysis = lossless) > FLAC (FlacFrontend level 7).

It's a very nice and little-circulated recording of SD's Hammersmith Apollo (though still the 'Odeon' to me) show from 2000.
OU: I was front row for this great gig - back cover pic (from SD official site) shows my three friends bottom left, but just cuts me out ! Excellent to hear some of my rarely-played favourites such as 'Night by Night', 'Jack of Speed', and 'Monkey in Your Soul'. Also, I think, one of the earliest versions of 'Dirty Work' with the girls on lead vocals.
Taper is unknown (I don't think it's a SBD - perhaps someone can confirm), but if he/she cares to step forward, I'll add a credit to the cover art.

CD 1
1. The Boston Rag
2. Bodhisattva
3. Night By Night

Steely Dan: Record Plant 1974 (Pre-FM - Toolman 35th Anniversary Ed) FLAC

4suxaSU_fs
1974-03-20
The Record Plant
Los Angeles, CA
KMET - Live

35th Anniversary Edition by TheTooleMan!
Pre FM Master Reel (Scotch 176 1/4" 1/2 track @7.5 ips, no NR) > Ampex ATR-100 Tape Machine > Apogee A/D converters @24/96 > Adobe Audition (downsampling, tracking) > WAV > FLAC
(refer to http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43240
Thanks to Weedwacker and especially to Javit for providing the source recordings

Remaster (by TheTooleMan): Sound Forge (eq, tiny amount of pitch correction, re-tracking) -> FLAC

As with many tapes of this vintage, I thought a little more bass was needed. While I was at it, I ironed out a couple of tape wrinkles, too. I debated whether to put this on TTD, but finally said, "What the hell!"

At the end of the broadcast, the announcer thanks "the Sansui quad equipment people" for doing "a great job tonight." I took that as a hint that there may be some SQ encoded material in the tape, so I tried running the tracks through my home-brew SQ decoder. Nothing much popped out, quad-wise. That's not too surprising, since SQ only provides 3 db separation between the front and rear channels. Besides that, this is a pre-FM recording, so the quad encoding may not be present in the audio chain.

I may get adventurous and try some more tricks with this one. If anything good comes out of it, I will seed it here. If anyone has more info on the quad nature of this recording, or KMET in 1974, please let me know.

Steely Dan: Las Vegas 08-08-08 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

steely-dan
I've posted a June and July concert from this tour, now here's an August offering:
2008-08-08 Pearl Concert Theater-Las Vegas, NV Summer Tour-2008-Think Fast
Recorded By: Robert Mullen

Equipment/Lineage: Audience/SP-BMC-12 mic’s (Croakies)>SP-SPSB-1 (Battery Boost Box w/ Bass Roll-Off at 95Hz)>Sony MZ-RH10 HI-MD (PCM) (tracking done on the fly)>Hi-MD[M]>Sonic Stage 3.0>wav>TLH flac level 8.
Tracks 11.1-11.2 and 13 transfered to CD Wave>THL flac level 8.
Comments: We had never been to this venue before and it was excellent. A great place for a concert. We sat 1st row of sec. 303 (dead center, balcony...total sweet spot. Recording sound came out well and the crowd was well behaved. I had to deal with some recording issues...C'est la vie!

Steely Dan: Metal Leg 1974 (Tooleman Reworked and Remastered version) FLAC

SD%20metal%20leg%20TooleManFRONT
Capricorn Records (CR2045)
Remastered/retracked by TheTooleMan
August 2008
SBD > boot > ? > SHN > TTD > TheTooleMan (Sound Forge) > FLAC
The recording was running too fast and the sound was equalized so that dogs would find it irritating.
This version has the pitch corrected (-35 cents, approximately) and has been equalized to reduce ultra-high frequencies while giving the bass a lot more punch.
In addition to the changes above, I have moved the last two tracks of the bootleg to what I believe is their proper position in the Steely Dan set lists of 1974. "Bodhisattva" usually started their shows, and was followed by "The Boston Rag," then "Do It Again." On the "Metal Leg" recordings, there is a fade out/fade in between track 12, "My Old School" and track 13, "Bodhisattva," which indicates some changes from the original sequence. Some applause and other stage announcements have been removed, which would have helped with placing the venues, performance dates, and song sequence, but that's all we got to work with, folks!
For what it's worth, I do believe the tracks of the two alleged shows do belong together. There were some differences in the recording quality between the recordings labeled "March 9, 1974" and "March 10, 1974." The March 10 set had much more high frequency information. Each of the two sets were re-equalized differently in this version.
