What started out as a simple transfer of one of Phil G.’s graciously sent tapes turned into a week long journey into the abyss…
As those of you who have been collecting Meat Puppets stuff for years can attest, the sheer volume of studio material is daunting. The fact that the Ryko reissues collected some of the material for release, while amazing for fans, has made sorting out what is still left out there unreleased even more daunting.
The tape Phil G. sent to me was labeled ‘Unreleased Demos’. Ah, the irony. Many of the tracks on the tape have since been released on the various Ryko reissues. In addition to what is listed above, songs not included here are:

Aside from the oft circulated 1st LP demos (which made it to the Ryko reissue in the same order as the tapes that had been in circulation for years prior), The remaining tracks are all from 1983, it became apparent; ‘Meat Puppets II’ and ‘Up on the Sun’ era.
So I went back to my collection and dug out a tape I got back in the early 90’s labeled ‘Sessions 1983’ to see if I could toss it out in lieu of this very nice recording. Phil told me his pal got his tape from ‘a member of the band.’ (most likely Derrick, methinks) and, while not sure of the exact gens from the masters (2-3 methinks), the sound is very nice.
It turned out that the ‘Sessions 1983’ tape song list was completely different. The sound was rough, but it was certainly worth looking deeper into it to see if any songs could be matched to Phil’s tape. It turned out, not one.
So I pulled a transfer of my tape, and put the proverbial lipstick on the pig. I did a (tasteful) click pop elimination (the tape was a crackling mess), patched a couple of channel drop outs, added some volume, and ya know what…it sounds a lot better. (not perfect, but pretty nice)
The ‘sessions’ tracks are VERY experimental. They are certainly not ‘demos’ in the sense that the band went to the studio to get proper takes. They are, however, really interesting jams, vamps and all out skewering of songs as they were later released; some interesting stuff. The songs on Phil’s tape are a lot more realized ‘demos’…hence I call this ‘demos and sessions’…
As far as the time periods listed:
I went under the assumption that 1983 sessions are actually from 1983. If so, these woulda probably have taken place very early in the year. These ‘Up on the Sun’ sessions, the same that yielded “Mother American Marshmallow” and “Hot Pink”, took place in May. The first Meat Puppets II sessions took place between April and May of 1983, so, they seem to all be from this same time period.
The first LP songs on here are very apparently from these sessions as well, and not from one of the many 1980-81 sessions tapes in circulation. The songs are still blistering hardcore bacchanalia, but are a bit more polished and played with a bit more proficiency than the earlier versions…AMAZING STUFF!!...
But, why take my word for it…
