Madonna: Sticky & Sweet Tour 2009 SKY Broadcast Pro-Shot DVD

the only one for the weekend but it is a big one AND a good one.

I am not a huge Madonna fan but I have always been a little intrigued by her ever since I worked in a record shop in Minneapolis in the early 80's.
I have watched this DVD and she is still an amazing performer. There is dancing, enormous theatrics and great camera work throughout.
If you or someone you know like Madonna then this would be a "must have".
The DVD is TRULY excellent quality. This is recorded from digital TV, not an AVI file. The quality is very good - best around so far until HD appears. -Dave

DVD includes chapters to each song but no other extras, just the whole show in excellent quality.

The files are the raw bits of a DVD. You should only have to burn them to a blank DVD to get a playable DVD. No conversion is required. Rar Files are packed with 4% recovery for dependability. MD5 included.

As noted, only higher gen recordings of this show have surfaced thus far. Alot of higher gen hiss has built up copy after copy. When viewing the recording in a spectrum analyzer, its readily apparent where the later copies contributed the easily removed portion of the hiss. So I shaped a FFT filter designed to remove this built up generational hiss. After listening to various samples and toggling back and forth and fine tuning it, I settled on a setting that I was comfortable was not removing any content or nuance in the recording. The exact settings were different for each cassette side but essentially I used an arc starting at about 10k and ending at 11.75k at -15db, then a straight cut from there. The result is perhaps a 20% reduction of hiss.
I also applied some minor gain changes throughout to address some of the suttle level changes that occur occasionally. These were almost all within 0.5db to 2db.
I also used the PEQ to increase the level slightly at ~2k-3k by ~1.5db. This created a bit more open sound. All of these changes are intended to make this source a little more enjoyable to listen to for those who appreciate this show even though its a relatively weak recording.

I obtained the cassette used for this transfer from a experienced Danish collector in the mid 1990s. A couple of people I have shared it with previously commented that they believe it to be clearer and found the instrument definition better. As with all versions, "A Saucerful Of Secrets" cuts before the Celestial Voices Sequence. I provided Littlepieces with a 24bit/96kHz wave file so he could adjust the speed and make other corrections.
***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes***
The objective was to make the necessary corrections with a minimum amount of processing iterations using the highest quality settings. This is a mono recording that was processed as two channel stereo as is often the case. It has a small variable phase shift throughout. Also, most of the time, the left channel was lower than the right channel. The best solution for these things, given this is a mono recording, is to eliminate the inferior left channel. No more phase shift and no more channel level differences.
I removed some repeated segments, and manually removed over 150 pops/noises and more than 20 micro dropouts (most being from 12-20ms), and then speed corrected. There were segments where a series of these micro dropouts were adjacent to one another and therefore not all of them could be removed. This left a segment during the 8th minute of FOS a little bumpy for a very short time. Also there are a few small tape drags sprinkled throughout.
All versions of this show that have surfaced are higher gens. Underneath the high hiss level is a great performance.

***Neonknight's Background Information For This Show***
Nobody seems to have any idea who made the concert recording. Included in the list of people I have consulted about its origins is Lord Snooty. I asked him about it a while back and he noted that it had always been a bit of a mystery. LS received a copy in the mid 70's under the title of 'Strathclyde 1971' and looking back at some of his records could find no mention of Stirling or a date for many years. He couldn't recall when or why it was changed to Stirling 1971-05-18 and has never found a known lineage.
Tickets were sold far and wide for the gig but to the best of my knowledge no photos exist from the concert. So working on the assumption that what we are offering here is Stirling and not University of Strathclyde, Glasgow 1971-05-20, I will try and give you a picture of what it was like.
The stage, a temporary construction, was about 30ft by 10ft, wooden and totally covered by the band’s equipment. To the right was the group’s chau gong. At the back was a large steel installation by Mary Martin which can still be seen at the University. It must have provided a very striking backdrop (try looking up Mary Martin on google). The audience was really packed in but in keeping with the time most people sat cross-legged in their tiny amount of floor space as they enjoyed the sound spiralling around the room and the light show.
I sometimes see comments about the size of the venue possibly affecting the sound quality of the tape. I think that either the original recording equipment was the problem or the taper had their microphone concealed under clothing, possibly a coat, and they got in a better position for songs such as Set The Controls. The refectory was intimate but the ceiling was not particularly low, as I have seen some people suggest, and overall the room was short and wide so there shouldn’t have been an issue with the taper being distant from the stage. There were windows all around the room and they weren’t blacked out.
The MC for the evening and principal concert organiser was Paul Martin. For an interesting description of gigs at Stirling University in its early days after being founded in 1967 see Paul’s account at: http://www.anniversary.stir.ac.uk/memories/students/paul-martin.php

At the webpage Paul says:
"We soon also realised that by utilising University facilities, we could lay on sufficient facilities for up to 1,000 people attending a single concert. This kind of firepower at even £1.00 per ticket allowed us to consider booking bands that would otherwise not consider the student circuit... with some funds in the bank we then hired Pink Floyd on May 3rd 1971 who performed Atom Heart Mother in its entirety.”
I think the tickets for the Floyd cost £1.50 and you'll note the incorrect reference to 3 May.
Paul Martin explains: "We paid them £1,000 pounds exactly for their performance with two £500 notes which they said were using as pocket money for a golfing holiday in Scotland." A rest in the Highlands must have been much-welcomed after a long and hectic period touring. The offer of £1000 was approximately £600 more than the University had paid for any other group.
He goes on: “The line up was David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason; they were mixed by a Scottish artist Ron Geesin, who had produced AHM, and he also did a short set on the night." Ron Geesin, like now, was a crowd pleaser and compelling according to a couple of accounts I have read. He apparently wandered onstage in overalls that he had been wearing all day and delivered some monologues much like the ones that he did at Cadogan Hall in 2008, then after a very short set left to rapturous applause.
Before the main event various student newspapers wanted to interview the band, so a room was duly set up but the plug had to be pulled because some of the would-be journalists were apparently being over-aggressive towards the group. Topping the day off nicely Edinburgh’s Student magazine apparently asked Roger’s favourite question: “Who exactly is Pink Floyd and what does he do?” It would have been good to be in the room to hear the answer.

Slowing Down (a little) for Vacation

Hi Friends,
I will be going on vacation the first couple of weeks of August. I still want to keep the boots flowing so starting Friday I will be posting three a day. That way I can "stock up" a little and give you something fresh each day even though I'll be gone.

Source notes: I got this as an shn set from a trading buddy. It came with no source info, just a track listing. The recording sounded very very good already. The extreamly low level of hiss makes my think this was recorded on a Reel to Reel. I'm not sure if this was recorded off the radio or pre-FM. I'm leaning towards a pre-FM KSAN vault leak because of the excellent sonic quality. However, that's just a guess.
Remastering notes: The only thing I really did was tame some of the audience applause and Jimmy's banter. This was recorded with an extreme amount of audience able to be heard in the small club. It sounds as if they mic'ed the crowd to get the comments between songs. They boosted up Jimmy’s voice levels and turned the audience mic on and off as Jimmy finished and started songs. The difference was quite noticeable in places. The songs were actually softer in volume then the banter. The banter and applause were so loud in parts it hurt my ears after jamming to the songs at high volume. I had to keep lowering the volume between songs and turn it back up during the songs. The contrast was quite offensive. I tamed the applause and banter sections and boosted the gain on some of the songs at the beginning to make it more even and more pleasurable to listen to without constantly needing to change the volume. Towards the end the songs got louder, so I only boosted the first few songs. But the banter and applause were offensively loud throughout.

OU Notes: This is my own recording from row 14, center in the arena floor. As far as I know, this show hasn't surfaced yet. I've checked Dime & Hungercity regularly hoping it would appear, but it hasn't, so here's my recording.
It's probably a 9/10, with a very focused sound. The vocal is up-front & defined, except for Sultans Of Swing where I think the mic volume wasn't raised to accommodate the increased volume of the band.
The guitar rings through as clear as a bell & the ambience of the venue adds a richness to the overall sound, without washing out the sound too much. I'm very pleased with it & hope you will be too.
The Joe Brown tracks are a nice addition & it was good to see him appear as a surprise guest. Funnily enough, I've seen Mark & Joe play Donegan's Gone twice at the Albert Hall (1st time was at the Lonnie Tribute Concert in 2004).
I'll also be at Joe's show at the RAH in September at which Mark will be a guest, and no doubt they'll play it again!
Feel free to distribute & torrent how & where you want to, the music is yours.

What can I say about this disc other than if you are a Bowie fan then this is a really nice release indeed.
It is a direct copy of a double silver disc set I have entitled "Sound And Vision", which was recorded live at Rotterdam, Sport Paleis Ahoy 30.03.90.
It is on the POP TUNES Record label Cat No PT 316, and I bought it many moons ago at a UK record Fair and it cost me £25 (the price tag is still on the cd case).
This is what Bassman has to say about this recording:
"COMMENTS: This is the CD issue of the LP SOUND + VISION (1991). The sound quality is excellent, just like the show itself! This CD is said to be rather limited, but I have no idea of how many copies that were released? The flyer has the same pictures as on the cover. A very nice CD!"
The address on the above mentioned flyer of "Pop tunes" is Rue De Cap, D'Antibes23 - 75019 Paris France. Furthermore it says the cd was/is "Made In France"
The sound as Bassman says is excellent and to be honest it is really good. I'm not sure if it's a radio broadcast, a soundboard recording or just an exceptionally good audience recording it is so very hard to tell. But I would rate the sound at a very solid 8/10.
Furthermore it catches Bowie on his "farewell tour" in 1990, before forming "Tin Machine".
The setlist is basically a greatest hits setlist, and I can never understand to this day, why an official release from this tour has never been released, as some of the shows were recorded.
So as fans we'll have to make do and mend with recordings such as this, and another one which I have in the pipeline!
As always share freely but never sell. Bowie is a current recording artist so support him by buying his official cd's, merchandise, and take in a gig or two as and when he tours again.

& Bonus NTSC DVD - 8mm Footage presents fragments of the concert filmed from the audience. It is dark, fuzzy and out of sync with the music. None of the songs are presented complete. The people by the camera talk too much at the beginning of the show, making the observation that the stage looks like a spaceship. But given the scarcity of such material it’s good enough and captures some very dramatic images like the dark and smoky stage during “Echoes” and the above mentioned fireworks display. (NOT INCLUDED BECAUSE IT IS CRAP)

Hollywood Bowl Show from `72!

Discs (1) and (2) utilize the second recording(Rec.2). This is a complete, excellent, dynamic tape from the audience. It most recently appeared on Crackers on the Zeus label. The only weakness with the Zeus release is the bass which had a lot of rumble and distortion present. The worst is in “One Of These Days” where the bass overloaded the rest of the music and made the track almost unlistenable. Sirene, by comparison, have tackled this issue by smoothing the bass line and diminishing its volume. “One Of These Days” on this new release doesn’t have the problems on the Zeus and sounds phenomenal. It’s clear and powerful and one of the most effective versions captured on tape.

Discs (3) and (4) contain the first tape(Rec.1), the one that surfaced many years ago and is the source for the famous three LP set Crackers on TARKL(3969). It differs from the first tape source by emphasizing the top end, not having any significant dropouts or cuts, and by not being complete. This taper missed the opening of the show and ”Breathe” was edited from a soundboard from the February 20th Rainbow show. Sirene were able to find a virgin copy of the LP since there really is no evidence of its origin.

This is a mix of two sources from the first night in Puebla. There are still a few parts missing between songs, but this is most likely the best quality and most complete version of this concert we'll ever hear. About 95% of the show comes from an almost excellent first generation tape, and I filled in the gaps with an inferior source. The better source was shared at Queenzone last year in mp3, but luckily I managed to track down the lossless version.

Priceless moments: During the middle of NIH, Freddie reacts to the rowdy audience throwing shoes at the band: "Feels like bloody Chelsea Cobbler, I tell you!" (for those who don't know, Chelsea Cobbler is a men's shoe store in London). And at the end of the show, he says "Thank you for the shoes! Adios amigos, you motherf^ckers! You bunch of tacos, goodbye!" However, it's worth noting that on the second night, these were his closing words: "Thank you for being a totally different audience tonight. We all thank you." The stories often circulate that Queen's concerts in Mexico were horrible for the band, but the bootlegs reveal that it was just the one concert in Puebla that gave them problems. Fans who attended the Monterrey show have also said their concert went smoothly. As for what happened in Mexico outside the concert venues, that's another story!

Beetles: Interview 1966 for Print article *ALL 4 BEATLES TALK* (Pre-FM) FLAC

This next offering is an open reel tape recording of all 4 Beatles together in March of 1966 from "Radio Caroline"?? talking about EVERYTHING!!!
Paul is still with Jane Asher and won't comment on possible engagement plans with her. They keep asking though and he is holding firm.
This guys asks them all when they first had sex.... he is good and having fun with this.
Does Ringo change Zakk's nappies?
They are planning to record, and I might assume that the tour is over. But it might be over by this time. They do sound a little stoned and they are having fun.
This is a VERY CLEAN recording and is wonderful. This journalist is so much better than so many of the idiots that had the opportunity to talk to the Beatles. I hope you enjoy this rare little gem!! And it is REALLY FUNNY!!!

Interview runs 21 mins and was taped at "The Captains Kitchen?" for the "Music Disc" paper. At least that is what they say at the start. There are many words spoken about "Radio Coroline", and a bumber at the end of the recording. They could after all be in Abbey Road and the whole "Beatles being in the radio studio" could be all these radio guys could get. I have not listened to this all the way through and there might be a clue as to where they really are!!
This is short, but where are you going to find a 1966 interview with all 4 Beatles??

OU Comments: First time at this venue in San Antonio. The acoustics at this auditorium are better than average IMHO. We were near the front of the 1st balcony, just stage left of center...nice sound from there. The crowd was excited, and behaved well around us. "Turn Me On Dead Man: The John Barrett Tapes" is a revelatory experience for Beatles fans, comprising tracks taken directly from the late Abbey Road engineer's cassette dubs of material he found during the vaults searches in 1982. Included are previously unavailable tracks and mixes as well as items featuring significant upgrades in sound quality from earlier appearances on other collections. The package also includes a booklet with informative liner-notes and rare photos.
Prior to the early 1980's, it was pure hearsay amongst Beatles aficionados as to what was inside the EMI vaults pertaining to the group's residency at Abbey Road and other studios from 1962 until 1970. Also, very little was known about actual recording dates of their album and singles. Most of the information that was available to fans came from contemporary reports in UK music magazines such as "New Musical Express" or "Melody Maker", or fan mags like "Beatles Monthly". This info, some correct, some not, was then regurgitated in many of the earlier Beatles books, such as Roy Carr and Tony Tyler's "An Illustrated Record" or Harry Castleman and Wally Podrazik's "All Together Now".
All of this uncertainty was to change beginning in 1981. That year, an engineer at Abbey Road named John Barrett found he had cancer, and was looking for a way to occupy his time while undergoing treatment. Ken Townsend, the manager of the studios at the time, thought that finally going through the vaults and seeing exactly was and was not there with regards to the Beatles' many recording sessions would be an excellent task for the ailing engineer.
Barrett ripped into his task with gusto, spending weeks listening through every tape and making up a detailed "catalog" of sorts, with multi-colored tabs and dividers for easy access to the various sections, and color codings for the multitudes of mixes and takes which were included. The first fruits of this research was used on the insert for the box of EMI's "The Beatles Singles Collection" issued in December of 1982, which featured for the first time the recording dates for the tracks enclosed. Also, an informative article in "Record Collector" by Nick Piercey in october 1983 included EMI mouthpiece Mike Heatley using Barrett's guide when answering Piercey's queries about various Beatles recording issues.
Throughout 1982, Barrett was also compiling audio material for a Beatles multi-media show that would take place in the famed Abbey Road Studio 2 while it was being refurbished in the summer of 1983. While this cataloging and assemblage for "The Beatles At Abbey Road" (as the show was to be imaginatively titled) was occurring, Barrett was running cassette dubs of some of the more interesting material for his own use. Some of the material was mixed as he was running his tapes, while some tracks where the original mixes done at the time of the recording sessions. Barrett knew what he was doing; he dubbed off lengendary tracks such as "Leave My Kitten Alone", which had never been issued, as well as the more interesting alternate takes in the vaults like "Norwegian Wood" take one. Also, many of the tracks he dubbed where stereo mixes of titles that at the time hadn't seen the light of day in stereo, or had seen limited release, such as "This Boy".
Meanwhile, the late Roger Scott, a well-known UK disc jockey, was enlisted to do the narration for the "Abbey Road" show, and was given copies of these dubs as well. Scott actually used some of the tracks from these dubs in 1984 (the same year Barrett died, in February) for a 12-hour radio show on the Beatles entitled "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". This material subsequently appeared (taken directly from the radio show discs) on the NEMS release "Not For Sale" in early 1985. Copies of some of the tapes made it into other hands one the Continent, who subsequently issued various series such as "Ultra Rare Trax" on Swingin' Pig, and Yellow Dog's "Unsurpassed Masters", based on the Barrett dubs, mixed with other sources.
However, much of the material dubbed off by Barrett went unissued... until now. Taken from the original cassette dubs, here are a bunch o' Beatles tracks you've never heard in this forum. They are all either different mixes, or significant upgrades from previous appearances, or in some cases, completely unissued.
While John Barrett's name may not be as lengendary in the Beatles' world as other researchers such as Mark Lewisohn, his initial work was the cornerstone for all that is now finally known about the Beatles' recording sessions. In tribute, we hope you enjoy these tapes ... hopefully John Barrett would be happy to know that his efforts were not in vain !

Review: Nice package, incredible material, and great sound. There is a 'vinyl noise' apparent at times, but this is surface noise from the alternate acetate, rather than a vinyl boot. The random song order could have been chosen better and put into a more chronological order. The photos and information are as good as any bootleg ever produced. Also see "The Lonesome Sparrow Sings". The track listing on the back uses the working titles of the songs as they appear on the vault masters. This can be a little misleading, as the songs were released under a different title. Some, however, are so different from the release version as to deserve a different title.
