You know Dave, much of the time love you for what you do here, making great music available to the masses. Then there are times like this morning when I absolutely hate you.
Here I am 7:30 on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, surrounded by sprawled out bodies (kids had a sleepover), enjoying the first cup of coffee, pondering what music I should blast out of the speakers to enhance/encourage the kids' musical education/enjoyment (:evil :-D ), & checking out QB to see what the new day had brought. I saw the Argent offering & was quite 'x' (excited is too strong but happy is too weak, somewhere in the middle there...) to add it to the collection. I've liked Argent for a long time & I grew up in the SF area so I like to get concerts from the venues that I used to go to way back when. Then, like a ton of bricks it hit me ... 1970 ..... 1970? ... hmmm, carry the zero & subtract the 7 ... no, that can't be right. Do it again... crap, same answer ... 40? ... 40 ... 40!!!. This concert was 40 farking years ago, 40..years..ago... damn I'm getting old... Even though Graham closed the Fillmore a year later & I was too young to go then, it wasn't too far off in the future that I started going to concerts in that general area myself. 40 years ago, where did the time go.
Looking at all these innocent young bodies surrounding me I envy them their upcoming years of personal growth & discovery (I don't envy them the various stupid things that everyone must go through on the way to becoming an adult. Those tend to suck). Then I pondered what I myself had during those years of growth & discovery. As it relates to QB I realized just how many of the giants of rock & roll that I saw live at or near the height of their true fame. Also too there are those musicians that I saw live that these guys on the floor near me will never be able to see as they've died in the intervening years (Wright, Garcia, SRV, Scott & Entwhistle off the top of my head. Sadly I'm sure there is more).
So even though you shocked me out of my peaceful Sunday morning (40 years...sigh...), once again I need to thank you Dave. Even though these goofballs that surround me have a lot to look forward to, I don't think that I would trade with them after all. These 40+ years of mine haven't been too bad & I got to live through and enjoy an era in music that will never be replicated.
Thanks go out to you for what you do to keep that music fresh & new to these guys when I introduce them to it when they wake up in a bit .... perhaps by Hells Bells with the speakers pointed at them & the volume at 9 or 10 ... heh, heh, heh...
Dave, Innocent Bystander is right!!
I was thinking the same thing!! I saw the Zombies a few times in 2006, and they had this little old grandpa playing bass!! A Grandpa from the rest home, named Jim Rodford, (who it turned out was an original Zombie). Now you post a picture from a concert I might have gone to when I was a teenager, and here is Grandpa looking like a regular guy. So the regular guys I know, or knew, ARE NOW ALL GRANDPAS!!! Where did my youth go? It was just here a second ago. Ralph and I went to Dodger Stadium to see the Ronettes, the Remains, the Cyrkle, and Bobby Hebb, and one other band, it can't be that long ago (Aug 28, 1966).
Look at Jim Rodford.
I'm gonna lay down.
I don't feel good.
Well thanks for making me feel better Prefabfan. First for saying that I'm right. Could you please talk to Mrs. IB about that. I tend to think that I am the majority of the time but she seems to think just the opposite. It feels good having someone on my side ;-) Also I feel better after reading your Dodger Stadium story as I was born about a week before that. So let's see ... (carry the two) ... aw crap, 44 years. I'm back to feeling old again :-).
Oh well, the point still stands. I'm glad that I got to see some of these guys posted here back in their prime. What really astounds me though is when someone is posted with a recent concert & yet their 'hits' (of varying degrees of popularity) were 25+ years ago (thinking of The Fixx specifically now, but there have been others). Then looking deeper into it (Wiki generally..) you find that they've been making new music & touring for much of that time (usually without hearing anything about them except for that brief moment in the 80's). You have to admire/question their dedication (& this wasn't a knock on you or your selections Dave, just an observation on old guys spending a lifetime on the road & making music that most people won't hear).
Ah well, the assorted medium sized creatures have all gone home & it's time to get back to work cleaning up the place. Maybe I'll go grab that Fixx show to see how they sound while listening to Argent as I clean. I can think of (& have done) worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Have a good one everybody.
Nice post! Thank you.
many many sincere thanks for so positively answering my request for rare material from this outstanding early 70's UK band.
On a personal note, my 1st ever 7" 45 single was
"Hold your Head Up"
..and I've been obsessively addicted to music ever since..
So, if I can make one more plea for help..
A band from the same era which I enthusiasticly collected every LP but never got the chance to see live was "Rare Bird"
Over many years searching, I have never found any evidence of any existing live or outtakes 'collectors' tapes or CD's..
but a random google last year provided this single clue
"rare bird
rare sympathy
- incl. 'king kong' (frank zappa)
?? cd-b@@tleg ?? ??
graham field: organ and keyboards
david kaffineti: electric piano and keyboards
steve gould: lead vocals and bass guitar
mark ashton: drums and vocals
beautiful scarlet
i'm thinking
flight part I: as your mind flies by
sympathy
king kong (frank zappa)
what do you want to know
flight part II"
If theres ever any chance your very well respected network
of learned 'rare' music archivists could
unearth this unknown release...
many gratefull thanks
