OU Notes: Ok, here's the first of the two new Sea of Tunes releases. The booklet says the Gary Usher session is from October 1961 although the back card says 1962. The rest of CD1 is from 1963. CD2 is described in the booklet as: "All tracks from a tape which was recorded by Brian, probably as early as 1960. These recordings are the first recordings made by the Beach Boys."
There's no doubt about it, these recordings are rough. After all, considering the time period and the conditions under which they were made, that should come as no surprise. That said, there's a lot of valuable material here, and the audio quality is good enough to make listening enjoyable. Even if you only listen to it once, there's no denying that this is an historic audio record of the beginning of a major band, and should be in your collection.
