Sound is excellent, in particular for a recording of this era, but overall very nice. The fade-ins and outs for each track are just as I received them in a trade a few years back.

NOTE: The first seven tracks on this disc reportedly make up Solid Rock, a live album compiled by Dylan but rejected by Columbia. The final track, incorrectly sourced on the cover slips, comes from the same April 19 performance as the other songs. However, "Cover Down" was apparently not slated for the planned LP.
DEEP: Not much need be said about this terrific sounding set, allegedly the unreleased live album considered for official release way back when. The sound is as close to official release quality as you are likely to hear. The performances of the gospel material are breathtaking, Dylan's singing never better and his conviction awe-inspiring. Essential stuff.
rmd: I think this is Bob's greatest album ever, unreleased or not. Great performance and crystal clear sound.
rmd: Stunning quality "official" live recording that never actually made it to release. The performances are superb and committed.

Mark Knopfler was not part of Dylan's gospel band. He was on Slow Train Coming album, but he is not on this recording.
I have a hard time believing this was going to be a live album. Dylan stumbles on the lyrics in both of the first two songs.
Thanks for this post--I've been hunting for Dylan concerts from the 79-81 era.
Redsock you are right - the guitar doesn't sound like MK's style.

Much confusion about this one, whose correct title is ROCK SOLID and not SOLID ROCK (which refers to the complete recording of the night after).

That's exactly how I remember the early gospel show tours: Dylan was totally committed and awe-inspiring! Thanks for posting this FANTASTIC recording!
A very poorly put together, poorly mixed album, by none other than Bob himself. He excelled at it in those years. Relatively poor performances, too. The best thing about this is the final song, which Bob did not include on the proposed 7-song live album. Kinda makes you feel sorry for CBS, which takes some doing!
He could have got a number of fantastic albums from the previous tour, glorifying to his Saviour and himself, too. Thanks to CBS for saving Bob from humiliating himself even further. Still worth a listen, of course. After all, it's Bob in fabulous sound quality.
