Well, everyone has been requesting a MONOLITH tour show. They are hard to come by!! (almost as hard as a complete soundboard from the first and second album tours!)
This is the WLS FM radio broadcast, that was aired live as it happened on July 4, 1979. As Robby mentions, it was going out live around the world, but a bad storm caused lots of problems with the signal and this is rough. It is an FM broadcast, and although it is rough, I have still enjoyed it for many years. To me, it sounds as good as many audience recordings I have heard through the years. Not a problem for me to listen to, but you be the judge!
I got this on 2 cdrs when people started burning their own discs from cassette tapes long ago. I have NO IDEA of the lineage, except I know this has not been done as MP3 and converted back. I took the cds and ripped them with SOUNDFORGE, titled the tracks, used FLACfrontend to encode them (FLAC 8), and drank a glass of ice water during the conversion.
(No waterglass was harmed in the process) I have enjoyed this for the powerful show it is..
I hope those of you who (like me) find MONOLITH to be a diamond in the crown of KANSAS work, will enjoy this!

Sounding with a few problems (I have it already), but a great show.
I´ve heard there is another version of a monolith show at 12/05/79, Tingley Coliseum, Albuquerque. Any chance for it ?
Also would a show from the "power" tour very great to hear.

Thanks for posting this Kansas show. I know you probably posted the information about this show as you received it. However, there are a couple problems with the info.
First of all, according to the only Kansas concert date log I could find on the web [http://atlas.kennesaw.edu/cgi-bin/dhirschl/tour.cgi?band=Kansas], Kansas didn't play Alpine Valley on 4 July, 1979. That night, they were in Louisville, KY. They played Alpine Valley on 2 and 3 July. I was at one of those concerts, but I don't remember for sure which date.
However, I can tell that the concert in this recording is the one I was at because of a specific incident. During "Closet Chronicles," when Steve Walsh sings the line "and it might as well be raining," you can hear the crowd cheer. That's because Alpine Valley was an outdoor venue, it was indeed raining at the time, and when Walsh sang that line, he pointed at the sky.
Secondly, the Chicago radio station that has sometimes been known as WLS-FM (95/94.7 FM) didn't use those call letters in 1979. They have been WLS-FM at various points in their history. However, in the summer of 1979, they were WDAI, a disco station, certainly not a format conducive to broadcasting a Kansas concert. [http://www.wlshistory.com/new/947.htm]
In 1979, WDAI's sister station, WLS-AM (89/890 AM) was a top 40 rock station, and they did live broadcasts of concerts. [http://www.wlshistory.com/WLS70/] This leads me to believe that this recording is from WLS-AM, not FM. This would explain the sound quality. It's obviously not an audience recording, but it's mono and has a squished frequency range. An AM broadcast would also explain the lighting interference, which is characteristic of AM radio but not FM.
