OU: This is far and away the best sounding and most well-performed show circulating by the original lineup. IMO, these performances show the band at it's peak as a "hard-rock" act. Those only familiar with the relatively tame studio versions of these songs will be surprised/shocked at volume and intensity of these live-in-studio (with small crowd) performances. WARNING: This is not soul/jazz/pop music. This has no association whatsoever with anything by Steely Dan or Michael McDonald. This is pure hard guitar rock. IMO, this is easily the best bootleg ever made featuring the "REAL" line-up! Perhaps early days of EZT. Perplexingly hard to locate considering high quality...

Oh man, this is a treat - you rarely see the Doobies on blogs! Thanks so much Dave!

Thanks! I only really know Long Train Running with that addictive guitar line. A live performance/ recording really is the best way to get to know the band.
I have seen these ads for Midnite Special, and thought about buying the set; they advertise surround sound. But if this is mono, doesn't that mean that those DVDs would be nonsense surround derived from monaural?? anyone know if the Don K Mid Spec DVDs are 5.1 are simulated surround from mono?
@Prefabfan
I don't have the set, but I imagine that the Midnight Special stuff (at least from the 1970s) was all broadcast in mono. While I doubt it's the case, it's possible that they had multitracks of the original performances.
Still, DVDs and tv these days is rather depressing for us older folk. Fake stereo, fake surround, fake widescreen, fake color, and digitally sped-up programs of yesteryear. Bah humbug!
Oh, don't ever expect to see a Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on DVD. I read that the library was purchased a few years ago by a stock footage firm. Anyone up for trying to get a job there and dubbing off all the tapes?
You gotta love the ultrasonic studios shows. The 72 steve miller band show, the 73 and 74 little feat shows, and the 74 steely dan show all are fantastic. Hopefully this one lives up to the others. Must have been fun to be one of the select few that got to see one of these shows. Rock on
What does he mean.... "Perhaps early days of EZT. Perplexingly hard to locate considering high quality..."? I guess he knows. Sure sounds like he thinks we do, too.
