Anderson, Reed, Zorn
"Improvisations"
Jazz Middelheim
Antwerp, Belgium 2009-08-13
Laurie Anderson - Viool, electronica
Lou Reed - Gitaar
Jon Zorn - Alt Sax
FM -> AVS Audio Recorder -> WAV -> FLAC(8)
1. First improvisation
2. Second improvisation
3. Applaus + comment from dj
4. Third improvisation
5. Outro
Also included, the interview with Laurie Anderson
OU Note: Yes, it is Lou Reed, but don't expect a rock concert... It is free jazz improvisation, or even better, free improvisation, I don't feel any "jazz" inside this performance. Lou Reed, his wife Laurie Anderson and Jon Zorn came over from the U.S. to Antwerp just to give this single concert. Amazing. I wonder how many people will grab this. And I wonder from the people who grab it, how many will like it...

Thank You So Much!
Grabbing this now, more out of curiosity - Thx so much! I'll bet the recent Beefheart excitement will spill over for this one too... Unstable rockers dabbling in experimentation = fun!
Many thanks for posting this. I've been so curious to hear what they're doing in these sets.
Presumably some of you have heard the controversy over their performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival, where people walked out during the set: http://tinyurl.com/zornmontreal
My favorite comment of the whole lot is where an attendee basically says that the organizers should have warned them that it would be improvisational music! What a sorry state the music market is in.
Again...THANKS!
Kinda like Spinal Tap Mark II doing Jazz Odyssey?
Experimentation is what keeps music fresh and alive. I think that many concert goers expect the same old greatest hits package. This is fine but it keeps a performer locked in a cage.
Wild and moving.
thanks dave
you made me so happy with this !!!
long live lou-the beast is back.
Really nice stuff. THIS is what people were up in arms about?
Wonder what they'd think of Nels Cline, Godspeed You! Black Emperor...or Albert Ayler for that matter!
Was thinking of doing a D/L of this.
How badly will my ears bleed?
I picked up a lossy recording of the Montreal Jazz Fest performance at NeverGetOutOfTheBoat -- the Zorn response of "get the f*ck out" to the boos of the crowd is a wonderful moment. Some were truly offended, others cheered...
"What, no Walk On The Wild Side??"
I have heard the "fans" complaints about Lou's new direction, which makes me wonder if they are fans of Lou's genius, or simply fans of MOR rock.
You have to Lou credit, he has the courage to try something new and challenging, getting out of his (and our) comfort zone, and going his own path. He's got a true rock attitude, holding true to his instincts instead of playing it safe.
Great post.
Thanks a lot!
Jesus!!! thanks...
I'm from Belgium and I was so sad to have missed this concert!!!
You are definitively the best Dave
Thanx
I'm a big fan of a lot of Zorn's work. I wish you'd upload some Naked City or Electric Masada boots.
This music, however, wasn't all that interesting to me.
Just downing it now. I missed the UK gig so it will be nice to hear something from the tour.
I'm a fan of Zorn, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Coltrane, Coleman, Davis, Zappa, Beefheart, early Floyd, T Dream...Improv and experimental work etc, so this should be a treat. Not enough bands and artists are even capable of improvising! I hate people who just expect the band to recreate the album exactly the same live then moan that the band don't do that. Where is the creativity in running over the same tune exactly the same day after day year after year. I wouldn't expect Picasso to just keep painting the same picture over and over. Those musicians must be bored out of their heads!
Thanks for the great blog!
amazing, thanks I have the Lossy of the Montreal performance and have enjoyed repeated listening. Looking forward tto repeated listening of this performance. Many thanks for the download
cheers
