Previously uncirculated set of unmarked tapes for this show transferred with Dolby B on as per Mike's notes on the tape labels using an adjustable outboard Dolby B unit. This is the 1st time (May 2010) these tapes have ever been digitized. The sound is completely unaltered except for pitch correction during playback and fades added for each of the tape flips.
Mike Millard UNMARKED Led Zeppelin - newly made available.
The fan recording of a concert is really an extension of taking snapshots of your heroes. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s recordable media was just making its way into households as a consumer electronic device, either an expensive reel-to-reel deck or a convenient cassette recording deck. Just imagine sneaking one of those into a concert these days. More likely, the stealth recorder of choice today would be a mini-disc recorder or your handphone. Small enough to fit your pocket.
But Michael Millard was different. He arrived early at concerts near his home, pulled out a wheelchair from the boot of his car and proceeded to wheel himself into the arena as an invalid. He managed to secure front row "seats", almost always front and center. Hidden underneath his wheelchair was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck hooked up to two high-quality AKG mics. Security guards in those days were probably unaware of such goings on.
His recordings were much sought after for their quality - capturing the expanse of the stage plus the great ambience of the halls. His close proximity eliminated any echo from his recordings. All the instruments recorded right off the front speakers. But Millard had a habit of marking his tapes when he copied them for another collector or fan. He would, for instance, lower the levels when transferring the audio to a VHS tape or lower the volume in mid-song when making a cassette copy. It has been said he detested bootleggers who pressed up his recordings onto vinyls or CDs to sell. To that end, he kept a log of all the trades he made with clear indications of what markings he did to the tapes. That way, he knew which of his trades were sent to bootleggers.
He worked as a custodian in a public school. In a fit of depression, he committed suicide in 1990. His friends say he destroyed all copies of his Led Zeppelin recordings. These are what are now being traded back and forth.
Millard was active from 1974 to the ‘80s and was said to have taped shows by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jethro Tull and even Kansas. To date, we have never found a copy of his Who or Tull recordings. The non-Zeppelin masters are known to be in possession of Millard’s family. Hopefully, someday they will be shared again.

WOW! Thanks so very much Dave this is HUGE and looks like it will be absolutely amazing! Enjoy your day off tomorrow!
Fantastic stuff, thanks a million!
This is about 10GB of downloading if you want it all.
My computer's hamster needs a rest since it uploaded X2 (rs+mega) = 20GB
100% excellent. Thank you.
Words cannot express the gratitude for your hard work. Thanks, Dave!
Like the good Colonel said, words can't describe the thanks I'm feeling - so I'll shut up for once :-)
Have a good day off tomorrow. Get out & enjoy the summer weather.
I'm planning on housing these in a special box once I get it all downloaded and burned to CDs...thanks again Dave...YOU ROCK!!!

Huh? Am I missing something? The RS link only gives you one file that takes 5 secs to download. That can't be anything more than text.

There is a lot more to it than that my friend but worth every second, (or hour in this case).
Open with the instructions that our fantastic host has provided and read the document.
With that being said, I wish to say to our friend Dave, enjoy your time away from this. You deserve it.
Oh, and Dave, thanks again, and again, and again.
As a side note, has anyone else had an issue with the file for 032775 #5? The bugger just stops on me!!!!!!!!! Grrrrr.

No - no words. No words to describe it. Poetry! They should've sent a poet. So beautiful. So beautiful... I had no idea
Ok, I see now, thank you. I've downloaded a bunch from here and never seen anything like this. For those that don't know, download from the rs or mega link, extract the rar and read the document you downloaded, which contains the links (about 10 for each show). Very cool, will work on this tomorrow. I especially appreciate that each show has its own links, as I am not going to bother with the '75 shows (already have Californication and the Deep Throat Trilogy). Thanks for everything you do Dave!
Pretty freaking fantastic!! Thanks for this! Have a good day off Dave!
The fact that these are unmarked 1st generation sources should easily blow away any previous versions that have cropped up over the years such as Californication and Deep Throat. Quality of this magnitude doesn't come around too often, even if you have previous versions of these shows all of these are still well worth having because of the source material. Thanks again and again Dave!!!
I think I'm gonna need a new hard drive....
Forgive me if this sounds naive, but I'm confused as to what seems an inconguity on the surface.
1. You say these are 1st generation?
Yet the (wellwritten ,informative,& in a very sad way enlightening) write-up of Millard says that the family owns the tapes and has not released them (would those not be the 1st generation?)...and what we have are from friends he traded/shared with...(would that not be 2nd or later generations)..?
2. Which brings me to...are these then family-owned 1st genererations never before seen anywhere...or are they traded/shared copies..?
3. If not family -owned,then how would these differ from your prior Millard releases of virtually every concert you list here?
4. IF family owned then will be seeing ,ala The Lampinski tapes, a plethora of forthcoming Millard-family owned recordings, exclusive to your site?...& who other than LedZep will be represented.
4. I have seen in at least one of the many Lampinski listings a reference to him as the Millard of the East Coast...for my 2 cents, I have always found the Millard tapes of a higher quality,& considerably so,in comparison...your thoughts,Dave?
5.Lastly,can you tell me where,if you have it,the actual link(s) to ANY Pink Floyd Millard tapes you list among the 3-400 you have prior listed?
thanks in advance for the forthcoming clarifications.
ericjmz
The write up on Millard in this post says that the non Zep shows are still in the possession of family. These are unmarked masters which would make them 1st generation and it seems new to the trade scene and obviously not destroyed by Millard as mentioned in the post. Millard marked the shows he traded with friends which would make those 2nd generation.
ericjmz,
There's only one Floyd show Millard taped in circulation: April 26, 1975. There are two versions of it here on QB:
http://qualitybootz.blogspot.com/2009/06/pink-floyd-echoes-from-past-platinum.html
http://qualitybootz.blogspot.com/2008/03/pink-floyd-cruel-but-fair-4-26-75.html
Unfortunately, I don't remember if the "Echoes from the Past" post is the speed-corrected version or not. If it's not, I did find links to a download of it on a different website, but I don't know if it's really kosher to post outside links here.
Oh, and continuing from yesterday's discussion, here's "Meddled", imho the best-sounding Floyd ROIO ever:
http://qualitybootz.blogspot.com/2009/02/pink-floyd-meddled-1971-thir13en.html
Enjoy!
Awesome treat for the torrent challenged!!

No, the family owns the masters, these are direct copies from them. The best it can possibly get unless the family releases the masters.
2. Which brings me to...are these then family-owned 1st genererations never before seen anywhere...or are they traded/shared copies..?
These aren't family owned, as you read above. Many of these are uncirculated from the 1st gen, the rest are, but these new transfers have Dolby B.
3. If not family -owned,then how would these differ from your prior Millard releases of virtually every concert you list here?
These are new transfers, with the Dolby B on. Therefore they are less noisy.
4. IF family owned then will be seeing ,ala The Lampinski tapes, a plethora of forthcoming Millard-family owned recordings, exclusive to your site?...& who other than LedZep will be represented.
No. I doubt there are any uncirculated Millard recordings left.
4. I have seen in at least one of the many Lampinski listings a reference to him as the Millard of the East Coast...for my 2 cents, I have always found the Millard tapes of a higher quality,& considerably so,in comparison...your thoughts,Dave?
I'm not Dave. :P Lampinski was an incredible taper, but I enjoy Millard's more.

Comment below you!
Some non- Floyd / Zep Millards:

On second thought, I should add something:
I'm pretty sure Millard taped those Rush and Wings concerts and they're in circulation, but I'm not pretty sure that the versions posted here on QB are derived from his tapes. They might be derived from the tapes of different tapers who were at the same shows.
Fantastic share, Dave - many thanks!
I've gotten a couple of these new "Millard umarked" versions (6-21-77 and 6-27-77) from other sources recently but was unable to get 6-25 until now. So thanks much!
Will be very interesting to see what the usual suspects can do with these in terms of remastering, or (in the case of Long Beach 3-11-75) making new matrices using these upgraded Millard AUD sources...
This is great stuff! Thanks.
Thanks, Dave - my HDD's screaming for mercy as I type :)

bummer
I had a similar problem with "A Sweeter Blueberry" and one other link with this one(so far, not done yet), try the corresponding rs link, it seems to work just fine. Very nice to have more than one source! Thanks for all you do, Dave

I don't know if this was directed toward Rambleonzep.com or not, but I've gone thru all the links I got from your blog and have now directed them straight to your blog pages. I never gave you any credit for the uploading...I never claimed credit, but ommission can be just as guilty. So hopefully we're all good now...and this way people have access to the comments and such. thanks for a great blog!
I'm having the same problems with two links from 1975-03-27:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RVVDPS52 0327d.part03.rar
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=L5FYW72X 0327d.part05.rar
Starts to load, but then stalls and never recovers. Otherwise, many thanks , Dave.
Thank you SO much for these! The sound quality is amazing.
I wondered about something though. On the Badgeholders show (6/23), the drop outs seem to match the drop outs on a tape I have from this show I obtained in the 1980's. But these are listed as the unmarked masters.
I was thinking that Millard marked the tapes to identify who was given what with drop outs. Maybe these drop outs were just accidental during the taping. But surely I didn't own a copy of a master 25 years ago, so I'm confused. (Or maybe the markings were too subtle for me to catch.) Either way, these are excellent. I never thought I'd ever hear a Millard master! And I was fortunate enough to actually be at this show. So thank you again!
These are amazing recordings. Thank you so much for these. I attended the Badgeholders' show and always dreamed of having Millard's master of this great show.
Both 6/19 and 6/21 are A AUDS's (Exc AUD), with the former being a VG show and the latter a GREAT one. Thanks Dave!
Tried "quality" repeatedly without success just now.
@Zephyr - the dropouts from the June 23rd 1977 show are not Millard's "markings." Rather, they're from the original master tape. Apparently Millard was having trouble with his recording deck that night - the speculation/theory I've read is that his Nakamichi deck was end-up in his bag (or under his wheelchair) and the 400MHz test-tone accidentally kept engaging, thereby cutting out the music.
Also, as a related FYI, the 14 second cut in Ten Years Gone from June 21 1977 is either due to the same thing, or to him having to flip/change a tape - a great tragedy since it's probably the best performance ever, with the best venue ambience ever, of that song!
I don't know how you find time to upload what you do, you must have a hyperspace internet connection, taken me all weekend to get these.
Many, many thanks mate, can't use torrents so this site is amazing, big DL though everyone.
Thanks to Matt for the ART too, and o course Millard.
Thanks for using Megaupload too.
Links ares still fine btw..
Dave,
I've been downloading these when I have a spare moment or two & found a problem on MU's 3/27 listing. Both Part 7 & 8 have the same URL (Part 7). Looking at RS it does have a distinct Part 8 so I'm downloading that one & hoping that they are interchangeable.
To the above posters having problems with the same day's (3/27) Part 3 & 5, they both downloaded fine for me on the first try. Hopefully whatever the problem is worked itself out over the past few weeks.
Thanks again for making these available Dave. It's really sad that Mike never knew the respect/awe that many people hold him in. The quality level of these recordings is just incredible. Thankfully these gems are now available for future generations to enjoy.
Thanks so much for making these available, if you are limited to time a space for downloading IMO go for either 77-5-21 Inglewood (one of their best ever) or 75-3-21 Inglewood again totally awesome. thanks again
