The Digital Dan Review: An incredible audience show from the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California on April 26, 1975. This is the complete master tape source, so complete that you here the taper testing the mics as the show starts. The sound is nothing short of astounding. Incredibly clear and quite devoid of almost any fan noise. The bass is well captured, deep and powerful with no distortion whatsoever. The highs are also very crisp and not the least bit of harshness. In other words, the mix is just about perfect as if it were a soundboard.
There are a few things that make this recording truly unique. First, the pre-release versions of Sheep (Raving and Drooling) and Dogs (You Gotta Be Crazy). Raving and Drooling is much
different instrumentally during the jam sections than is the album version, including some rhythm guitar that sounds like disco-funk! The lyrics to You Gotta Be Crazy are quite different from the album version of Dogs. Even Roger calls it a rather "mean" song. "Any Colour You Like" is the great jam version and this is the last tour with performances of "Echoes" in its entirety. All and all this recording is absolutely amazing for its age and one that you will definitely want in your collection.

OU Notes:
By far, the ultimate best quality soundboard of New Order I've EVER heard - including any of the official live releases (_Retro_ disc 4 tracks, BBC Glastonbury '87, etc). Sound is absolutely pristine, crisp, well-mixed, you name it. A beautiful recording from a woefully under-documented era in their career, and representative of what some consider the last classic New Order tour where you just might possibly hear something dug up from their archives (here, it's "All Day Long") - as opposed to the fixed setlists from '93 or the rarely-changing 2001/2002 gigs.
I got this in a trade from Sam (lammah) and the original FLACs were too fast pitch-wise. I fixed it up in SoundForge and re-FLACed it, after redoing tracksplits in CD Wave to eliminate any SBEs. I'll leave it up to Sam to further expand on the lineage - he told me to put this up here so he could get the fixed version himself.
If any New Order bootleg/live tape was ready for immediate official release as the "official" live album, this would be a top candidate sound quality-wise. If there are better-sounding soundboards of them prior to the Get Ready era, I've not heard them.

This is one of the "IN CONCERT" programs the BBC did in the early 70's. The format was a studio, artists playing acoustic (or what we would call "unplugged" nowadays!), and a small audience. I know there is a version of this concert circulating with on the same dvd James Taylor and Neil Young (NTSC) and The Kinks, The Eagles, Elton John, and Neil Diamond (PAL). There is also a compilation DVD of Cat Stevens which contains this concert. This version is IMO an upgrade to these.
Because of the fact that db.etree etc. has different dates listed for this concert, I left the day and month of this concert unspecified.

Duran Duran: Live from Central Park 1982 (AM Radio) FLAC

OU Notes: For two awful years, I lived in Whitefish, Ontario, just outside of Sudbury. You could walk the length of the town in 30 minutes. My father, for some reason, had decided he should buy the only variety store in town and move the whole family up north. Never mind that the new highway now bypassed us, so tourist traffic was now light, and that the local nickel mine that was the main employer was on a year long strike. We lasted 2 years, went bankrupt, and came back home to southern Ontario.
Needless to say, the music scene up there was abysmal. There was no FM rock station, even. Sometimes the CBC would play a decent show late at night, but I usually had to make due with CHNO AM, which was the usual drivel that all AM stations are. One night, though, they played this, which for them would have been cutting edge. It's obviously some kind of network feed, with a vacuous announcer ("now here's more rock and roll from Duran Duran!"), and it's AM, which means it's mono.

Liner Notes: And now for round two….
Pink Floyd ceremoniously announced the upcoming UK performances of their 1988 tour by sailing an inflatable bed down the Thames River in front of the British Parliament on January 28th 1988. After a successful 1987 reunion, the band was set to hit the road again. The first show of the tour was in Auckland, New Zealand on January 22nd and was followed by 9 performances at the Entertainment Center in Sydney, Australia. An inflatable pig paraded near the Sydney Opera house to let the people of Australia know that Pink Floyd was back, after a long time away. In his book Inside Out, Nick Mason comments that the experience was much more enjoyable (and warm) than the last time they were in Australia in August of 1971 when the weather was not as hospitable. The Pink Floyd drummer must have forgotten the two Australian shows they performed in March of 1972. Still, a long time between visits so 9 shows in Sydney was not unreasonable to schedule. Ten more shows were given in Australia before heading to Japan to close the East Asian tour with 8 shows in that country. After resting during the month of March, the band was off to America. They began in Los Angeles on April 15th and, 10 performances later, found themselves at Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts for a 2-night stay. This recording comes from the first performance which was given on May 6th.
Pink Floyd did not play Massachusetts during the 1987 tour. The closest they came to Foxboro was their show in Providence, Rhode Island on October 16th. Of course, there was virtually no difference in the setlist between the 1987 and 1988 tours. Anyone who attended both the Providence '87 and Foxboro '88 shows would have noted that only the addition of 'The Great Gig in the Sky' during the 1988 gig distinguished the two. Nick Mason recalls these events by noting in his book, “during the show in Foxboro, Massachusetts the flying pig snagged somewhere and was ripped to pieces by an over-enthusiastic or fanatically vegan audience”. Was the Foxboro crowd overly rowdy? Listen to this recording and decide for yourself. Sadly, our intrepid taper found himself surrounded by some most enthusiastic patrons. As the show begins you can hear audience members screaming and yelling; the tenacity of which would suggest that they were either high on drugs or not really interested in hearing the music. Eventually, someone (our taper?) tells them to quiet down and listen to the show. One of the guys does apologize but then starts screaming later on again. Fortunately for us there are fewer disruptions as the show goes on but such is the fate of those attending a Pink Floyd concert. Our taper provides these memories for us….
This would not be the first time Floyd concert attendees spent more time disrupting others than listening to music. In fact, the famous spitting incident in Montreal, at the end of the 1977 tour is credited by Roger Waters as being one of the events that sparked the development of THE WALL. But that was certainly not the first time Roger had been annoyed by fans showing a lack of respect or interest in the performance. July of 1977 was particularly bad as Roger's intolerance for audience antics finally shone through. At Madison Square Garden on July 3rd, he broke from the quiet and personally meaningful song “Pigs on a Wing” to swear at a fan who had just set off some fireworks. Later in the show he referred to others who did the same as a special type of stupid person. The next day, again fireworks were set off in the middle of a song and Roger makes a derogatory remark towards the person who did it. In this context, it is understandable how the spitting incident in Montreal could occur two days later.
Of course, during these 1980's tours, large stadiums were now used and the use of fireworks was no longer tolerated. Still, that did not prevent many from being disruptive on their own. Given the size of the crowds at these events it is not surprising that a few uncontrolled people will be present. Our taper does a great job capturing a good performance under difficult circumstances. If live recordings are meant to reproduce the concert experience then this recording achieves that goal.

Notes from the Re-Master
This show comes to us directly from the taper as data WAV files digitally encoded from the master tape. According to the taper, the show was recorded using a Sony WM-D6C with Sony ECM-150T microphones. The complete show is here. Only a small segment was patched but all the original music was captured. With great quality and adequate acoustics, the first task was to address the contributions made by the overly zealous audience members surrounding our taper. Variable frequency whistles, minimally variable frequency yells and occasional talking all needed to be dealt with. To cut these out would have been too disruptive to the flow of the recording. Similarly, static notch filters would have introduced too much of an artificial processing sound to the show. Considering the options, dynamic filtering was chosen to reduce but not eliminate these non-performance sounds. Though still present, their volume is greatly reduced now so they are not as injurious to the listening experience.
The dynamics of the show also needed adjustment. There was no clipping during the recording but a peak limiter was active much of the time to deal with the high volume of the recording. Some dynamic variability was re-introduced in order to produce a more natural sound within the recording. Pops, clicks, dropouts and other segmental recording errors were repaired as well as possible. Tonality and balance were also adjusted to correct problems with those aspects and then finally the show was tracked keeping the intended breakpoints in the performance.

From a 3rd Gen Tape. The show was shortened because of rain. You can hear Roger after On The Run: "we'll be back, you stay there and get wet!", and Dave during Breathe (R): "when I come home cold and tired...and wet!" There is some talking during On the Run from the taper commenting about the fact that it's raining. The crowd is pleasant and not too loud, (read that as, you can hear them in the backgraound almost the entire recording). The recoding is also very distant and there is a ton of hiss. Definitely one of those completeists only roio's. The sound is perhaps a VG-/VG.

Jim Powell's notes:
There are conflicting reports whether the SBD master is on cassettes or reels, but it sounds like it would have to be reels. The last 26 seconds of Here Comes Sunshine is missing on our copy of the SBD and is patched in using an AUD master from a cassette copy of unknown low generation.
22 seconds in Eyes Of The World are patched from this AUD source also. The 22-second cut in Eyes looks like a cassette tape flip introduced when the reels were transcribed to 1st gen cassette. The missing conclusion of Here Comes Sunshine is harder to account for on this hypothesis, but there seems a reasonable chance that both missing segments are intact on the master reels.
First set highlights include TLEO, Row Jimmy, GSET and China Cat > Rider. The Here Comes Sunshine times almost 16 minutes, is the longest known on circulating tape and probably the best. The Dark Star is the third longest known at 43:28, and one of the all time best. It is the fraternal twin of 11/11/73.
Dave Greenberg did the patches. David Gans supplied DATs of the 1st gen cassette SBD and Jim Powell instigated the project, supplied the AUD cassette used to patch the SBD's defects, and wrote this note.

Godfather Records' At The End Of The Raimbow (sic) is a rather excellent version of what many Floyd fans consider to be one of their all-time greatest live performances. It's a show that's also quite historically notable since it's believed to be the very last time they ever played "A Saucerful Of Secrets", and the version of it on this recording will probably make any fan of this psychedelic classic regret that sadly they would never play it again.
This release must be either a copy of the circulated non-commercial CDR title Platinum Crackers or a derivative from it, which makes use of both of the audience-recorded sources known to exist from this night, one of them being from the master. Strong evidence to such is the fact that the playing times of each track on the first disc match up exactly with those of Platinum Crackers, and the ones on the second disc differ only very slightly by a few seconds each. Regardless, the sound quality is excellent, being clearly superior to that of the old release Staying Home To Watch The Rain (Great Dane GDR CD 9013). And unlike Crackers (Zeus Z 2011001/2), which was released years after Staying Home and sounds slightly better than it but is unfortunately somewhat thin, and probably even worse, has a somewhat irritatingly harsh, raspy sort of high end, At The End Of The Raimbow has noticeably deeper bass and a high end that's significantly less irritatingly harsh and raspy. Furthermore, both "Any Colour You Like" and "Brain Damage" are seamlessly complete, whereas on Zeus' Crackers approx. the last 40-45 seconds of "Any Colour" and the first 10-15 seconds of "Brain Damage" are unfortunately missing. On At The End Of The Raimbow, we have the complete show with no edits, cuts, fade-ins, fade-outs, etc., and even the tune-ups are included. Without the tune-ups, however, it would have been possible for Godfatherecords to squeeze both "One Of These Days" and "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" at the beginning of Disc 2 instead of the end of Disc 1, which would have made a somewhat better arrangement.
A highly-recommended title, At The End Of The Raimbow comes in a nicely attractive multi-gatefold digipack that features relatively uncommon or rare photos of each of the band members inside. Godfathe Records obviously must have meant to title this release At The End Of The Rainbow, but somehow At The End Of The Raimbow ended up as what's printed on the spine while the front cover actually just says At The End Of Raimbow. Nevertheless, such obvious typos alone would be a rather silly reason for not getting this fine version of one of the all-time favorite live shows of many Floyd fans.
Addendum: At The End Of The Raimbow is one of the releases of the Hollywood Bowl '72 show that has its last 3 songs in what's believed to be the correct order in which Floyd played them that night, while "Staying Home to Watch the Rain" & "Crackers" apparently have the incorrect order for those last 3 songs.

Notes: If I had to pick just one live recording from my Stones collection this one would certainly be a candidate for it. It contains a great version of 'Dead Flowers'. Well, I may be a bit biassed since this song is among my top favourites. 'Satisfaction' is played in a cool, laid-back manner like I have never heard it before.
Some people might want to know how this one compares to the Swingin' Pig release with the same title. Sorry, but I don't know it. I also did some research on the net, but I couldn't find any useful infos except that the track list and the running order is the same.

Metallica: Bay Area Trashers 1992 (Demos) FLAC

Early versions of songs that appeared on "Kill 'Em All"

A bad CD of Metallica, with bad sound quality recordings. It contains the very first demo CD of the band, released unofficially under the name Bay Area Trashers. The
suggestion is that it is a live recording, but the "live" sounds are added later.
In the US it was forbidden under pressure of Metallica. (But sold again under a different title). This version has a spoken introduction in which they say it
is a live recording, (But on the internet can be found that it isn't true.)
This is dubbed copy of 'No Life til Leather' with fake crowd noise. Still, collectors would probably want this just for the absurdity of it all. The last track is a documentary of Metallica, containing parts of interviews they gave.

During this show Elvis had to leave the stage due to ill health caused by a throat infection - and you can hear how rough he feels as he struggles during You Gave Me A Mountain and Fever. He clearly shouldn't have been on stage at all. We therefore get the bonus of hearing five songs by J D Sumner and the Stamps which is a rare treat. On his return Elvis sings his show closer Can't Help Falling In Love after which he decides to continue the show after all and battles on manfully through five more songs including a second rendition of Can't Help Falling In Love which can't have done his throat any good at all.
The show was also released by White Haven under the title Sweet Sweet Spirit and is clearly from the same source as the TCB Records release as the breaks outlined below occur at the same points. Las Vegas Dinner Show has far better sound than Sweet Sweet Spirit which is full of flaws and best avoided. This version shows that the original tape is pretty good for an audience recording. You can hear everything very clearly.
There are a couple of breaks which are on the source CD and presumably the source tape You Gave Me A Mountain at 3:18 and When It's My Time at 3:33


In an unrelated matter: I thought that you'd enjoy reading this letter from J Edgar Hoover written to the La Crosse (Wisconsin) Tribune after Elvis performed at the la Crosse High School in 1956. It is a real laugh!!

Dear Mr. Hoover,
Elvis Presley press-agented as a singer and entertainer, played to two groups of teenagers numbering several thousand at the city auditorium here. Monday May 14.
As newspaper man, parent, and former member of Army Intelligence Service, I feel an obligation to pass on to you my conviction that Presley is a definite danger to the security of the United States.
Although I could not attend myself, I sent two reporters to cover his second show at 9:30 p.m. besides, I secured the opinions of others of good judgment, who had seen the show or had heard direct reports of it. Among them are a radio station manager, a former motion picture exhibitor, an orchestra player, and a young woman employee of a radio station who witnessed the show to determine its value. All agree that it was the filthiest and most harmful production that ever came to La Crosse for exhibition to teenagers.
When Presley came on the stage, the youngsters almost mobbed him, as you can judge from the article and pictures enclosed from May 15 edition of the La Crosse TRIBUNE. The audience could not hear his "singing” for the screaming and carrying on of the teenagers.
But eyewitnesses have told me that Presley's actions and motions were such as to rouse the sexual passions of teenaged youth. One eye-witness described his actions as “sexual self-gratification on the stage," — another as “a striptease with clothes on." Although police and auxiliaries were there, the show went on. Perhaps the hardened police did not get the import of his motions and gestures, like those of masturbation or riding a microphone. (The assistant district attorney and Captain William Boma also stopped in for a few minutes in response to complaints about the first show, but they found no reason to halt the show.)
After the show, more than 1,000 teenagers tried to gang into Presley‘s room at the auditorium, then at the Stoddard Hotel. All possible police on duty were necessary at the Hotel to keep watch on the teenagers milling about the hotel till after 3 a.m., the hotel manager informed me. Some kept milling about the city till about 5 a.m.
Indications of the harm Presley did just in La Crosse were the two high school girls (of whom I have direct personal knowledge) whose abdomen and thigh had Presley's autograph. They admitted that they went to his room where this happened. It is known by psychologists, psychiatrists and priests that teenaged girls from the age of eleven, and boys in their adolescence are easily aroused to sexual indulgence and perversion by certain types of motions and hysteria, — the type that was exhibited at the Presley show.
There is also gossip of the Presley Fan Clubs that degenerate into sex orgies. The local radio station WKBH sponsors a club on the "Lindy Shannon Show."
From eye-witness reports about Presley, I would judge that he may possibly be both a drug addict and sexual pervert. In any case I am sure he bears close watch, — especially in the face of growing juvenile crime nearly everywhere in the United States. He is surrounded by a group of high-pressure agents who seem to control him, the hotel manager reported.
I do not report idly to the FBI. My last official report to an FBI agent in New York before I entered the U.S. Army resulted in arrest of a saboteur (who committed suicide before his trial). I believe the Presley matter is as serious to U.S. security. I am convinced that juvenile crimes of lust and perversion will follow his show here in La Crosse.
I enclose article and pictures from May 15 edition of the La Crosse TRIBUNE. The article is an excellent example of the type of reporting that describes a burlesque show by writing about the drapes on the stage. But the pictures, to say the least are revealing. Note, too, that under the Presley article, the editor sanctimoniously published a very brief “filler" on the FBI’s concern for teenage crime. Only a moron could not see the connection between the Presley exhibit and the incidence of teenage disorders in La Crosse.

Release Notes: This is one of those shows that makes you glad to be a Rush collector, and proves that even after nearly 30 years, there are still gems to be unearthed out there. This show came to me in March of 2005. Of course, it’s one thing to discover a new AFTK show, still another to find one from so early in the tour, and yet another to find out that it has the best sound of any show from the tour. To really cap things off, this show has a unique feel to it. The band seems to be in a really upbeat mood tonight, which translates to a loose performance with a lot of joking around by Geddy. The sound is exceptionally clear for a 1977 audience recording. As a matter of fact, why even qualify that last statement? This recording easily holds it’s own with some of the better audience recordings of nearly ANY era. This was reported to me as sourced from a 1st gen tape. As with the other volumes of these releases, the goal is 100% preservation. This means that I have done nothing to alter the sound of this recording, and I'm passing it on exactly as it came to me.

Yes, it's a 3 disk set, and OK, it's a standard Echoes-less LOR set. In my opinion it is worth having, several songs are quite enjoyable. The most irritating part is the labeling, nothing on the CDs gives any hints about Pink Floyd, except for the fact that the CDs are pink ;-)
The sound quality is excellent most of the time, Money is almost mono (there is little output on the right channel) and the cash register sounds very weak. However, Money has a nice touch during the jam-session i the middle of the song, the guitar part is somewhat different and the keyboards have a central role here. There is some audience noise here and there during some of the songs, as if someone is right in front of the microphones. There is little tape hiss, the general impression is a crystal clear sound.
SOYCD is almost standard except for the intro which is slightly different/longer. SOL is standard, the guitar part sounds somewhat weak and there is some audience noise. LTF and YAM are very nice, especially the transition from YAM to ANM. ANM, TF, ANM is in genereal very good. Sorrow is fairly standard while DOW is _very_ good.
OTTA is probably better than the version on Delicate Sound of Thunder. OOTD sounds great. Time has a very weak intro, the solo-section is also weak soundwise, but the solo in it self is hot. OTR is normal. GGITS is among the best versions I have heard. WYWH is a standard version.
WTTM is probably better on A Clear View. U&T has an error or an experiment i the intro, it sounds different at one place probably as an alternative to the usual intro. But it's only for a couple of chords. ABITW is hot, especially the last part of the guitar solo. CN sounds somewhat weak in the beginning, but improves soundwise. The guitarsolo is farly hot and inspired. OS is very hot, the bass solo in the middle is very far away from Roger Waters' playing style! RLH has a very inspired intro, and is in general very good.
As said earlier, recommended. -GEORG
