I remember this guy being "the new big thing" for about 10 seconds. Can't beat a bit of the old over-privileged white kid who plays blues rock... What is it with middle-class and usually middle aged white guys playing the blues? It's disgusting.
A blues purist and collector replies: what a load of tosh!! It's a little thing called talent, I'm off to see Stan Webb 2nite someone else who has it in bucketloads but just happens to be white. It's got nothing to do with colour as any fan of Peter Green, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield or Johnny Winter will tell you. You could try asking Buddy Guy whether white men can play the blues or John Lee Hooker. They both featured white blues guitar players in their bands for many years and let's face it they could take their pick!!
With Jonny it's probably because he could play a mean guitar and sing like Joe Cocker at the age of 15 years. Oh sorry my mistake Joe Cocker is white isn't he!!??
You forgot Stevie Ray Vaughan and Duane Allman on your list. I challenge Mr. blinders to debate their ability to play the blues. One doesn't play the blues, one channels the blues. You either have the feeling, or you don't whether you're white, black, or any other race.
I agree we're are all the same color on the inside! You can't judge a book by it's cover! Some people may look white but act black, and vice versa. Anyway, the blues certainly are not limited to any one color. Just the music id blue not the player.
It's not about black or white, it's about the music! It might be called the blues, but this kid rocks. I've seen him live several times & his guitar work sizzles. It's rare to find his boots. I'll take any and every one I can find! Can't wait to hear this one. More! More! More! Many Thanks Dave!
I saw "Kid" Jonny Lang (as he was first known) when he started with a local band (Bad Medicine Blues Band - later Kid Jonny Lang and the Big Bang) more times than you can imagine here in Fargo. They played 2-3 times a week (sometimes 4) and I hardly ever missed a show. Granted he wasn't the lead player (Ted "Lightning Boy" Larsen was) but he could/can still play. Five white guys playing blues in (nearly) the Great White North. It's how and what you feel.
