Barenaked Ladies: 2 FM Broadcasts from 1992 (FLAC)

If Barenaked Ladies offend you please do not download ;)
_U6O9038
Kingswood Music Theatre, Maple, ON, Aug. 1992, FM Broadcast
OU: About a year earlier, I recorded the Barenaked Ladies opening for Leslie Spit Treeo in a bar in Hamilton. In that short period of time, they became superstars in Canada, going double platinum and getting a CBC broadcast of their headlining arena show! It took them quite a while (and lots of hard work) to catch on in the States, but up here, you couldn't escape them at this time.
This is the CBC one, not the whole show obviously, but the entire broadcast. They boys are in fine form on this one--they were always fun, but they were on full blast here. Essential early BNL.

"Private Session" Nov. 24, 1992 FM broadcast
OU: Nov. 24 is the broadcast date, no idea what the recording date would have been. Syndicated radio show broadcast on 99.9 Mix FM in Toronto, where it was recorded. Lots of interview segments, but those are fun too. Check out the really cheesy theme music!

OU: Here's another one from the 80 tour, for all you 2 "Growing up in public" fans out there ;).
I think this is a radio broadcast. It was televised, but not "So alone" - which is on here. Great quality.

Sounds more like a TV to me. Track 1 has some sound problems, probably due to the age of the tape it was recorded on. Afterwards there are only few bad spots in the tape. In the beginning and at the end of several songs audience noise is overlayed. 'So Alone' is not even 20 seconds long and covered in audience noise.

OU Notes: Show started at 7:30, I got in the Venue at 7:25. I started recording as soon as I got in, so during the first song you can hear me moving around and setting up the rig.In my hurry I plugged the mics in to the external mic input instead of line in. I've had problems with clipping when using my set-up this way before, so I waited until the first song was over to switch it and then fixed the volume levels so they matched later in Audacity.
There was no clipping but you can hear a slight difference.
I don't know all of Glass Harp's and Phil's music so this may be tracked kind of strange and I couldn't put together the entire setlist. I also included several extras in the post. I made scans of the poster/flyer from the show, an article about the benefit from a local paper, and an ad for the show. I also added some pics I took, a small animated gif, and a 1 minute mpeg of one of the jams. These are in a separate folder marked 'extras'.
Big thanks to Joe Ray, this recording would not have been possible without him.
Also thanks to Bob Brandt and the entire Glass Harp family for allowing the fans to tape and to ROAM for putting together a wonderful night of music.

8) Nobody's Fault But Mine (severely muffled and rustled from middle to the end, small cut in the middle)

The sound quality of the audience tape from the Oklahoma show starts off mostly muffled and distant. Good at best. It is hard to determine if the muffled sound is the result of a faulty PA system or a poorly positioned recorder. The sound also brightens and dulls throughout the entire show. This may be attributed to adjustments made to the PA system. When the recording does clear up, the sound is very good. And for the most part, brighter. The instruments are well defined during these portions even though the recording is a little distant. A quieted audience lessens the distance by allowing better definition of the instrumentation. There is no noticeable tape hiss in either condition. The sound quality of tracks without notation after them fall into the very good category. The guitar solo preceding Achilles Last Stand does not include any anthems and is much shorter than later versions from this tour. Plant recalls before Stairway to Heaven the last time they were in Oklahoma (1970). The "experts" will disagree with Plant's recollection (1971 is their assertion). The Tampa material is from an excellent audience recording. There is very little noticeable tape hiss until the muffled portion of Nobody's Fault But Mine. Higher octaves reached by the band distort the recording slightly. During Nobody's Fault But Mine, the tape becomes muffled as the taper packs up his equipment. Unfortunately this tape source does not contain the announcements cancelling the show. (Brian Ingham May 96)

04. A Saucerful Of Secrets [18:53] - recorder 2
05. The Embryo [8:22] - recorder 2

OU notes:
I was thinking this was the CD2 completely from an alternate source, whereas I guess it's the complete CD2 but again from 2 sources.
This can’t be the complete CD2 from a different source (recorder) ... the ambience is different (it's even more clear listening to the RoIO Falkoner Centert); it’s indeed the same as the Falkoner Centret CD2 more or less ...
... 'till the first portion of ASOS it’s the same as the 'main' excellent-sounding source ... the atl. source goes into ASOS (very well merged ... try to find the point using headphones) about at minute 2.00 (time meant for the track, not for the song); on Falkoner Centret it was made a different choice: to use the second source for the entire ASOS + Embryo (leaving out that piece of ASOS from the better source), here (again) the small piece of ASOS from the ‘good’ source' is kept entirely.
SQ 'till the first minute of ASOS is about the same as on the "Falkoner Centret 1970" RoIO, very moderate hiss and correct speed, on the contrary ASOS and Embryo sound here better than on Falkoner Centret as far as I can notice (better, not good, of course)
I don’t know the actual generation of the copies used for each of these releases but they do sound more or less the same; a possible remastering could be the reason of a little loss of brightness though; I keep on preferring Falkoner Centret in spite of the hiss and in spite of the little problem of speed, again, it sounds much brighter and 'deep'.
The actual difference of length between this ‘complete’ CD2 and the Falkoner Centret one is not due only to the speed anyway, here the last part of the gig is really ‘uncut’ I can identify at least a piece of tuning before Embryo that’s not on Falkoner Centret actually (well, it’s “just” a piece of tuning).
... all the possible combinations were attempted, I might not stand another version.
does exist actually a second recorder (complete) used as filler on version as Falkoner Centret or this one
1970 November 12: Chatting in Copenhagen upadated June 8 2004
2 tapers are circulating of this wonderful 70 gig in Copenhagen
the most famous (common) recorder is incomplete and versions directrly from the master are circulating, previous low gen.s of this recorder were filled with the second one for the last 2 missing songs (ASOS, The Embryo); second recorder is complete but sounds worse, at least the versions circulating are far from sounding as much good as the first recorder, but it's still around the VG.
recorder 1: incomplete, missing ASOS (there's jsut the Waters' intro essentially) and The Embryo; versions from this recorder are: untitled master; "Falkoner Centret" RoIO (filled with recorder 2); "Falkoner Centret 1970"; "Copenhagen Sequence" (has last 2 tracks filled from another recording / different date); untitled complete CD2 (supposed entirely from the second recorder but really a mix of the 2 recorders (again)
recorder 2: complete recording, generally used to fill last 2 songs of the other recorder; versions from this recording are: untitled cass[3]>DAT (complete recorder 2); last 2 tracks of "Falkoner Centret"; last 2 tracks of the untitled complete CD2.
very easy to identify the 2 recorders, both from the sound quality and from the fact that the second taper chats really a lot!
here are 2 distinctive points anyway:
at the very beginning, as soon as Waters says "good evening" on recorder 2 the taper's friend (a lady) repeats "good evening"; at the beginning of Cymbaline the taper of recorder 2 talks a lot.
interesting collection of reviews about this gig kindly posted by Claus Rasmussen:
FRIDAY 70.11.12.- Falkoner Centret, København, Denmark (show at 20:00 and 22:30)
1st show - Songs: Astronomy Domine, Fat Old Sun, Cymbaline, Atom Heart Mother, Green Is The Colour, Carefull With That Axe Eugene, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, A Saucerful Of Secrets, Embryo Part II (Audience recording, 2 different sources)
2nd show - Songs: not known.
"Pink Floyd impressed still another time here in Falkoner Centret, 3,800 in the audience, with their cosmic sound, the four English guys dominated the technical equipment to a scary degree. Pink Floyd are distinguished exponents for the most experimenting part of the beat scene, they are the future? Hardly, but it is exiting". (BT November 13, 1970, p 30)
"I do not think that Pink Floyd is that dedicated to the trip, it seems that they directs and programs the trip, in this way they give us the opportunity to take part in this mental trip. When I see Pink Floyd on stage, I feel they miss one dimension, the body is not involved in their trip, no spontaneity. The question is does Pink Floyd want this close contact to their audience, this night at Falkoner Centret it looked like it is the audience who has the will to begin this contact." (Ekstra Bladet November 13, 1970, p 20)
"And the galaxy sang, we laughed at Cymbaline, breathless they left us for two and a half hour, with open mouths and pressed throats, if anything is a trip, it is Pink Floyd". (Politiken November 13, 1970, p 16)
"Pink Floyd's concerts is still a confrontation between planets, and the best of all is that it is a combination of modern technique and the sound of the future and still it is so beautiful and warm". (Jyllands-Posten November 15, 1970, p 2:25)

Taper's Notes: This recording i'm not sure but it may be totally uncirculated, if it is very few people have it as i never have transfered it to cd until now. I had a tape problem about 20min. into the show so there are two songs that were spliced from an alternate source (*) which has been circulating.
This version is a new master cassette transfer from my original analog master tape (Mar. 2010).
Well this was one of the best concerts i have ever been too, if not the best. Pink Floyd in concert is something to experience. Everything about this show was amazing, the sound, lights, stage, effects was just perfect. This was only the 5th show of the '94 Division Bell tour and they played and sounded like they had been out for a couple of months. This was recorded from the stadium floor just left of the soundboard.
Enjoy!

Wishbone Ash: Hammersmith Odeon 1988 (FM) FLAC

Transfer direct from FM master tape (original broadcast recording made 9/4/88 onto TDK SA 90 chrome cassette tape)>Ion Tape 2 PC>Audacity 1.3 (drop-out removal)>Wav (16 bit)> Trader's Little Helper (SBE correction)

1.Living Proof
2.Genevieve
3.King Will Come
4.In the Skin
5.Phoenix
6.Blowing Free
7.Jail Bait
8.Bad Weather Blues
Time: 57.44

Line-up
Andy Powell, Steve Upton, Martin Turner,
Jamie Crompton (first 2 tracks)
and Ted Turner (remainder of set).

OU: (Ted Turner held up coming into the country- this explained in the between song patter prior to track 2).
Great reunion of the original lineup of Ash for this tour. Tape flip between tracks 6 and 7- fades out and back in. Slight drop-out removal carried out track 3. This was recorded on the 3rd April 1988 if it is the same gig as the 'Magic Night at the Odeon' bootleg, although that boot is longer appearing to feature the full set, so probably not from the FM broadcast; although there is another boot called
'Hammersmith '88' which may be taken from this FM broadcast. Not sure if they played at the Odeon more than once in '88.

10. Jailhouse Rock
11. God Save the Queen

OU: This is great but a bit hissy, but you'll have probably heard much worse. I certainly have! I read on www.queenlive.ca that the tape ran a bit slow and on checking myself I found that it did indeed need speeding up by 3%.
Having done that I also re-tracked the show, giving each song its own index point and adding fades to the start and end of the discs. I also moved Freddie's intro to 'The Prophet's Song' to the start of that track, rather than the end of the previous one, since it opens disc 2.
I removed about 6 minutes of between-encores clapping - I know some people don't approve of this, but the un-tampered master is still available at the address at the top of this posting. This isn't meant to be definitive, blah, blah...
Hope you like it!

- June 09, 1973 - Messezentrum Halle A, Nuremberg, West Germany
lineage: recorded by NM, audience to analog tape
the recording: Grundig-microphone > portable Philips-Cassette-Recorder (without any NoiseReduction) > unknown cassette type
the "safe storage" (back in the 70ies): Cassette (master) > the very same portable Philips-Cassette-Recorder (without any NoiseReduction) >> an Uher or Grundig Reel-To-Reel Stereo Tape Deck > 6,3 mm (1/4 inch-wide) Master-Reel BASF tape, ferric oxide [FeO]
the transfer 1 (just last week...): Magnetophonband BASF Typ LGS 26, 17.78 cm (7.0 inch), 730 m (2400 ft) Stereo Reel To Reel 4-Track Master (photo included), with original tape speed 9,52 cm/s (3-3/4 in/s) and no noise reduction > Reel-To-Reel Autoreverse Stereo Tape Deck AKAI GX-646 (photo included) > Analog Cable (coax) >
> Sony Digital Audio Tape Deck DTC-60ES, recorded with "Super Bit Mapping" (16 bit, SP 48 kHz) > > DAT (Maxell HS-4/90s, Helical-Scan 4mm Data Cartridge, 90 meter tape)
*** AND WITH THE SAME PROCESS *** >
> Oehlbach Hyper Profi Opto Set (optical fibre, TOS-Link) > > Behringer SRC-2496 Ultramatch Pro (Ultra-high-resolution 24-Bit/96 kHz A/D & D/A and Sample Rate Converter & Dropouts-/Jitter Remover) > converted to 16 bit, SP 44,1 kHz > Oehlbach Hyper Profi Opto Set (optical fibre, TOS-Link) > > Terratec Aureon 7.1 PCI - Dolby Digital Live Soundcard with C-Media CMI8768 Soundprocessor Chip, digital S/P-DIF in > Motherboard with AMD Multicore Processor, Serial ATA Interface > CD Wave (recording) > Harddisc Western Digital with Thermaltake HD Cooler (EVER had a HardDisc burnout ??)
for your further information:
The Sony DAT Deck DTC-60ES was used to record a "raw" DAT tape with "Super Bit Mapping" for the MWM-archive AND therefore was looped through between the Reel machine and the Behringer Ultramatch...

1. RAW - Direct Transfer of the Analog Master:
The recording is absolutely unaltered, no equalizing, smoothing etc. was done, it's the PURE RAW VERSION from the reel. And as this comes from analog tape, no noise reduction was used, so there is a slight hiss audible - just detectable with a good ability to hear...
THERE IS a 2 second snippet of true original tape hiss included in this folder, check out track #13...

the transfer 2.1. (just last week...):
REMEMBER THE Harddisc Western Digital with Thermaltake HD Cooler (EVER had a HardDisc burnout ??) > > NOTHING, JUST THE RAW FILES > CD Wave (tracking) > Traders Little Helper (SB aligned/level 6) > FLAC

Any EQ'ing was very slight, using the BBE Sonic Maximizer and several Plug-Ins, lowering some of the mud and especially to pull the guitar frequencies forward - just a touch - to help balance it overall a bit better...for my ears...The only further addition to the RAW files was a 2 second fade-in and, at the end, a fade-out.
the transfer 2.2. (just last week...):

Master EMI Tape Sourced!

The Beatles - As Nature Intended (1994)
EAC
Flac Image + Log & Cue
HQ Scans
Vigotone - VT122

“As Nature Intended documents the Beatles' last live show in front of an audience on the roof of Apple Records on January 20, 1969. It's taken from the EMI reel to reel tape of the event and was issued by the Louisiana-based label Vigotone Records, who published hundreds of superb CD-r releases in deluxe packaging. Sadly, Vigotone was shut down and no longer produces unofficial releases. Added to the release is the first mix of the Beatles "Get Back" album produced by Glyn Johns, taken, allegedly sourced from the master tape. It's a rough cut but still entirely enjoyable.”

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.
He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
This transfer is 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.
