OU Notes: JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 5 consists of a mix of both Dave's and Donn's recordings of opening night show of 74 tour for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at the Seattle Center Coliseum. This is one of legendary shows where they went all out and played basically everything they rehearsed for the tour, 40 songs in almost 4 hours is a lot of music. This was the only show they did this on this tour. The setlists and playing time got considerably shorter after this show. This show features a lot of songs for an aborted album called Human Highway is probably the only source for some of these songs aS done by all 4 like Human Highway though a lot of those songs would later turn up on various solo efforts. Donn and Dave sat next to each other at this and both recorded using seperate TC-126 tape decks. Neither of them had enough tapes to record the whole show so they towards the end of the show one would shut down while the other recorded and vice versa to try to capture the show in full. Both sources combined are still incomplete so the JEMS master recording was used to fill in any missing holes to make the show 100% complete music wise. Both recordings are excellent sounding as good if not better than the JEMS master recording and both sources to the best of our knowledge have never been circulated prior to (Sept 2010). These recordings are in their raw state with no mastering done to them except for speed corrections.

The 18th February gig at Columbus' PromoWest Pavillion got canceled (why?) but before it they still went to the Radio Station CD101's "Big Room" to promote it.
The 26th May gig was a make-up date, again they're promoting the concert at the station's studio. Both sets are acoustic and the sound quality is excellent with very little static noise. Guys, it ain't easy to sing early in the morning with a frog in your throat. But hey! I'd like to thank Pepsi... it's a Cola, cheers!

Location: FOB, DFC, 20' back from "catwalk" part of stage, ~30' FOB, mics ~6' high
OU Notes: The "Skit" tracks are part of the "Monster Ball" storyline that was incorporated into the show. Amplified separately from 3:02-6:06 due to volume changes. Normalized because the right channel came out slightly lower. Left channel then amplified to -.01db to get levels even. Peaks reduced at 12:30, 50:42, and 1:51:28. Unfortunately the drum roll outro in Bad Romance is cut because my recorder ran the file as large as it could. The good part is that only about a second of music is missing. My location was perfect for this because of the FOB sound and the fact that I was very close to the catwalk when her and the dancers came out that way. The crowd was excited and respectful to the music.

Bob Dylan and Guests (WOW): Radio City Music Hall 1992 (Video)

I'm a Dylan fan but this one is almost hilarious to watch. Pay attention to the backup singers trying to figure out where to come in. Bob gets a "D-" in enunciation here.

David Gilmour: Gibson Amphitheatre 2006 (VG++ Aud - Rev B) FLAC

Conversion using Switch and Wavelab.

OU The sound is extraordinary clear and Gilmour's guitar is as powerful as «Gdanks» release. You can almost hear the fingers touching the string! Sure that "moonwalk" was very close to the orchestra.
I kept the original recording without removing a comma, but: During «Echoes» One of the channels was switched off during about sixty seconds.
Moonman fixed the problem, Unfortunately 75 ms was missing in chanel 2 at 3"7s making a false stereo effect I fixed here the problem. "Echoes" appears here with it's original sound.
Many thanks to moonwalk for this recording !
New artwork for this package. Various comments about this concert in the end of this document.

The Facts: Two days before the show a friend of mine won us tickets to see Gilmour at the Jay Leno taping. I went up to the show with my brother and two friends. While I was gone to the taping for three hours they were partying it up at Universal City.
By the time I returned they were, how shall I say, f-ed up. So to make a long story short at the beginning of the show one of my friends was being a bit (very) loud and obnoxious but you can hear me settle him down in the beginning (please keep in mind he was really pissing me off and pardon my language). Almost all of his "loudness" is before and after songs. After the beginning they were much more courteous. I don't think they realized what I was trying to do.

SQ: The sound quality is great for most of the tracks. The bass roll of was perfect and the sound for most of the songs is really in balance in my opinion. You'll have to decide for yourself. There is a lot of guitar detail present.

Lineage: FM>cassette>30 years>wav>processing>wav>flac
I was going to call this "This is about a German Folk Legend" since that is what the guitarist (Laurie Wisefield?), but Andy Powell says "No it's Not!" before Lorelei
This was recorded shortly after the release of the "New England" album. The Outro is by a young John Peel.

OU: Ben played solo acoustic for a small crowd of 200 lucky Triple J (JJJ) radio contest winners and industry personnel. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, in town for a recent Neil Finn show, came on stage unannounced and shared vocals on "Indifference."
JJJ aired a post-show interview immediately following and later broadcast the performance sans "Suzie Blue", "Whipping Boy", and "Another Lonely Day" on April 23, 2001.
I received this show in 2002 or 2003 on a cd-r consisting of 3 tracks (tracks 01-10; tracks 11-14; and a repeat of track 10 which I have not included here). The encore break was split between two of the tracks so I combined these tracks in Abode Audition. Apart from that, this show is as I received it. -enjoy,

Eric Clapton: Vienna 1997 (Soundboard) FLAC

crossing-over-festival
The Legends "Crossing Over Festival"
Stadthalle
Vienna, Austria
July 8, 1997

EC Is Here / DJ Copy 90/91 - SB 5 (mono)
Band Lineup:
Marcus Miller Bass
Eric Clapton Guitar, Vocals
David Sanborn Saxophone
Joe Sample Keyboards, Piano
Steve Gadd Drums

Disc 1:
1. Full House
2. Marcus #1
3. Ruthie
4. Snakes
5. Going Down Slow
6. Peeper
7. Suggestions

Disc 2:
1. Third Degree
2. First Song Tango
3. Put it Where You Want It
4. Jerry Roll
5. Sentimental
6. Layla
7. Every Day I Have the Blues
8. Encore Jam

Info from the EC Tourography (ectours.de):
"The Jazz Fest Wien was held on July 2-13, 1997. As a part of the festival program, a two evenings event took place at the Stadthalle in Vienna in honor of the 65th birthday of Joe Zawinul, which was on Monday the 7th of July. The two evenings were on July 7-8, covered under the title "Crossing over". The Legends' performance was part of the second evening."
Geetarz Comments: A nice, crisp, close-miked soundboard, albeit in mono, with some compression that keeps this from a "SB 6" rating - excellent nonetheless.
Packaged in a license-plate sized and shaped cardboard folder, with the CDs packaged in a small pouch.
The fourth public performance (fifth overall) of the "Legends" summer tour of jazz festivals.
As the shows continued, the band kept stretching out more each night. Some of the "jam band" type fans complain about having the same setlist every night, but what's the point of playing different songs if they're always played the same boring way when they are played? One thing about these guys ... none of them have ever played the same solo twice, ever. It doesn't matter if they've played a song 1,000 times, every time it's a new direction.
Fantastic to have this as a nice soundboard!

Lineage: Silver > CD-R > EAC v. 0.99 Prebeta 5 (Secure, Offset Correct) > FLAC
Artwork, checksums, info file, and EAC logs included.
Enjoy!

Liner Notes: Another Decade for Tull….
Jethro Tull has always been thought of as a quintessential 1970’s English progressive rock band. After the successes of the late 1970’s albums “Songs from the Wood” and “Heavy Horses” Tull ended the decade with “Stormwatch” going Gold in the US. But the 1980’s would see a new direction for Ian Anderson and the rest of the gang. For the next album, “A”, released in 1980, previous band members Barrie Barlow, John Glascock, John Evans and David Palmer were replaced by Dave Pegg and Mark Craney. Eddie Jobson, having just left the band U.K. was also brought in to provide both keyboard and violin. Sadly, despite the new look and sound, the “A” album spent just 5 weeks on the charts reaching only #25 in the rankings. “Broadsword and the Beast” was next and was received well by fans. Sold out venues during the tour for that album provided encouragement but did not translate into the expected commercial success. Sales in Europe were strong but the Americans did not take to the new offering as much as previous albums. Still, Ian Anderson was pleased with the work describing “Broadsword” as one of his favorite albums. This was the first Tull album for yet another new keyboard player Peter-John Vettese who replaced Jobson after just one album. Vettese actually contributed much to the new Tull sound and helped with many of the instrumental sections of the new album.
In 1983 Ian Anderson decided to produce a solo album called “Walk into the Light”. For this album, Anderson decided to include Peter-John Vettese as the only other musician. Though not a great commercial success, the album was an opportunity for Vettese and Anderson to gain more experience working together to produce a unified sound. By 1984, Ian and Peter-John were ready to re-join Martin Barre and the rest of Tull for the next Jethro Tull album, “Under Wraps”. When asked about these two albums and the new Jethro Tull sound, Anderson had this to say, “I wanted to take the opportunity to experiment with something outside the Jethro Tull music of the time….I wanted to get away from doing what I was known for, and do something more electronic. It was the beginning of the techno age, of sequencers and samplers, and it all seemed very exciting….I was interested in the idea of combining the songs that could have been Tull songs, with a more mechanical and disciplined arrangement that would come from computer driven music. It (Walk into the Light) was in a way a direct precursor of the Tull album “Under Wraps”….It is interesting that both albums were resoundingly unsuccessful commercially…as that marked a rather more experimental period with technology…” They even used a drum machine instead of a live drummer for this new Tull album.

Rush: Manchester 2008 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

the best recording for this date
The Finest Special Effects - Front
The Finest Special Effects
Media: 3 CDR
Time: 68:12, 62:24, 38:22
Catalog: SolitaryPine Productions: SP010
Source: Audience Master
Date: July 11, 2008
Location: Verizon Wireless Arena, Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
Bookmark: http://www.digitalrushexperience.com/database/review.php?RecordingID=2317

OU NOTES: Geddy said a few words in between Subdivisions and Natural Science regarding the minature Professor next to his keyboards. Some of those words included the phrase: "The scientists at Rush productions spare no expense to bring you the finest special effects", hence the title for this release is born.

Tons of photos included!

Location: Section 122, Row F
Config: Audience stealth in hat
Source: CSB w/Bass Rolloff On -> Edirol R-09 [Line In ~ WAV 16bit/44.1kHz]
Conversion: Master WAVs ~> PC ~> Editing/Tracking ~> FLAC Level 8
Editing: Cool Edit Pro 2.0 [fades, boost, limits]
Tracking: CDWAV
Checksums: Traders Little Helper (MD5, FFP, and SBE verification)

MASTERING NOTES: This is a good quality recording. It is raw and has NO EQ. Some hard limiting (peak -1dB) was performed during the explosions (Far Cry and 2112). A 6dB boost was needed for the entire recording, as I had the levels set low.

Köln(Cologne) / Sporthalle - March 20, 1976

Radio broadcast: unknown tape gen. -> DAT(48kHz) -> optical cable -> Adobe Audition* ->wav -> CD Wave Editor (tracking) -> wav -> TLH -> flac
(* fades, volume adjustments, downsampling to 44,1 kHz)
Three songs and a review by Alan Bangs (later well known in Germany for his "Rockpalast" interviews) were broadcasted by British Forces Radio on March 22 1976, 2 days after the concert.
Don't expect great soundboard quality, they used an audience tape!

OU: Wow. This one is really special. . . . .
Digging through the Archives here I found this tape, which I had totally forgotten about. It was labeled " Mallard Demo ". I was soon to find out that it was not actually a Mallard demo, but instead THE MAGIC BAND Demo ( ! ! ) . . . recorded shortly after the guys all left CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND in 1974. The music here is really great and I am thinking that it will be "new" to many folks. Enjoy !
The following notes about this tape were written by John French. August/September 2010.
**( This first paragraph was written after I sent an email to John asking about this tape.
I also asked about the riffs I heard on this demo that I knew were used on Captain Beefheart's " You Know You're A Man " ). . . .
That demo was recorded in two places. The instrumentals were recorded in Bill's "shed" house in Arcata. He had a loft bed, and the drums were underneath. That was the "drum booth." The vocals were added in Malibu at the beach house of some famous DJ ( can't recall which one, but it could have been Casey Kasem). Ted Alvy, as I recall, did the technical stuff using the DJ's tape decks. I think the shower was my vocal booth!
The personnel was Bill Harkleroad, Alex Snouffer, Mark Boston, John Thomas (keys) and myself. We were planning on getting a drummer and I would just sing, but it never happened. BTW -- we were never called Mallard then. That was a name they chose after re-forming without me. We were "The Magic Band."
I noticed that "Hot Ice" riffs were later used on "You Know You're a Man." Probably, Don just used a riff of Bill's and claimed it as his own. I know Bill would never do that.
It must have been the Fall of 1974. We rapped it a couple of months later. I came back to Lancaster from Northern California on November 21. I was 26.
**( The following two paragraphs were written in two different messages after I sent John a copy of this tape ). . . .
I've never been much on lyrics and would have much rather played instrumental music, but I think that the music ( mostly Bill's) really was the shining moment in that music. I had been in theater for three years when they called me to play and so had to start over with the singing. I can't remember much about this, but will give a listen on my iPod while working and see what comes back.
We recorded this music in Bill's shed -- where he was living with his girlfriend at the time. We borrowed a Teac 3340 -four-track tape recorder and begged a bunch of mics and a mixer off some friends. Bill was the main impetus of the group when I showed up. The first thing I heard was "One Day Once" and I went outside and wrote lyrics in about 10 minutes. Art Tripp was still playing drums at that point but he left shortly after -- burned out from the music business. Most of the stuff was in the wrong key for me. All the stuff that says "Harkleroad, Music" was written before I arrived with the exception of "Reign Of Pain" which was a song I did with another band . Bill added the middle section.
Hot Ice may have been a collaboration on the lyrics.
That's about all I know. Just don't call it a "Mallard Demo." It was The Magic Band then. Mallard was something they came up with after I left.
* End of John's notes.
There is also a short paragraph about this tape on page 602 in John's recent book
" Beefheart : Through The Eyes Of Magic ". Copies of this amazing book can be purchased directly from John. Find him on myspace.
Much thanks to John for taking the time to write some notes and provide the proper
track listing. I can not express how much I appreciate that. Much love and respect to Mr. John " Drumbo " French.
. . . also thanks to "blackpage" for his ears & eyes.

John Cougar- vocals
Larry Crane- guitar
Doc Eric Rosser- piano
Michael "Chief". Wanchic- guitar
Robert "Ferd" Frank- bass
Tom Knowles- drums

1: a little night dancing 5:06
2: Sugar Marie > 4:25

4: tonight > Miami > this time > 10:58
5: I need a lover 7:17

7: good in bed > encore break crowd noise > 6:44
8: small paradise > I need a lover tease > roadhouse blues > I still need a lover > plastic Jesus (?) 17:17
runtime: 85:50

OU comments: this show was not listed in etree so I took the setlist from Aug 25 show in Marcy, N.Y. which appeared to be the same set, until it got to the small paradise medley..
it was broadcasted in 3 parts, each just about a half hour (give or take). tracking it all would have been very tough (and somewhat dubius), so I have "undertracked" it somewhat.
this is the full show, re-broadcasted on WBCN sometime in the late 80's. the 1st 5 tracks are master. the rest is 1st gen. tacked on to my master to get it all uncut. the difference in quality is not very noticable. I'm pretty sure about all the titles, not so sure about "plastic Jesus".

Jerry Garcia: San Francisco 1969 (Soundboard) shn

2. Big Boss Man [06:28]

4. Slow Blues [07:19]
5. Jam [05:28]
6. Jam [19:19]

OU Notes: Great disc! The sound quality is exceptional IMO, it almost sounds like it was recorded in a studio setup.

The lineup is reportedly the following:
Jerry Garcia - Guitar
Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar
Jack Cassady - Bass
Mickey Hart - Percussion
Spencer Dryden - Percussion

Known Flaws: A high pitched tone which was present on my CDR copy at roughly 0:12 - 0:23 of track 01 was edited out using EAC's wave editing function.
A 1-second pause at about 14:19-14:20 on the master dt06 was edited out also using EAC.
These shn files are seekable in your shnamp.
