Andy's Notes: One of my favourite recordings. A very good stereo audience recording, better sound quality than the recordings from the 1976 show anyway.
About a year after I went to this show, I was put in contact with a guy who was selling tapes of the whole gig. He told me he'd recorded it himself and this copy was made direct from his master. Whether that was true or not, I don't know. It was a commercial venture for him and I think I paid £1.50 for the TDK C120.
For my money, this was a much better gig than the '76 show. I know I'm in the minority with that opinion but I was at both shows and that's my view. By the time of that '76 show, they'd played virtually the same set every show for a year. And it showed. 1974 was wild and drunken and reckless; just what you wanted with The Who in the 70s. It was the last time they played a setlist as varied and as full of
surprises as this. Anyway, that's just my opinion, please leave comments. That's all.
OORU's Notes: I agree with what the seller told Andy - this must be from the master, as the overall quality is very clear. It is a totally different audience tape to the one used for "Charlton Uncut", one which I haven't seen around before. The general quality is a tad higher than the other tape, and is stereo, the audience chat immediately confirms this. There doesn't appear to be any edits here either. Apart from some over enthusiastic chat, this is actually more preferable to the "Uncut" cd.
I guess that the taper was right at the front of the stage, as just before Dr. Jimmy, the crowd around the taper have a loud argument with photographers who are blocking their view. They shout to Roger to get them moved, which must mean they were in a close proximity to the stage. It also makes fascinating listening - you really feel that you are there. I also advise you to listen to the chat before BBE
too - either the taper, or someone very near, pre-empts everything PT says, including correcting him on his memory of Woodstock! Very spooky & very funny!

Can't wait to hear this. Never thought '76 was all that anyway.
This is Great. It does seem pretty clear that the taper is very near the front. You can not only hear but also feel the power of the Who in full flow. You are at the front facing the Who!
Official live releases have never done this.
