Sounds like a great recording, but like ericjmz I also have problems with D1T4 "Brown Eyed Woman", which seems to be missing.

An interesting note about this show is that they played some songs that they hadn't played for a few months, the first being Casey Jones. Jerry couldn't remember the "trouble with you" verse and it leads to a very long rendition minus that verse and long jam between Jerry and Keith. The Deadhead's Taping Compendium lists highlights, and in this case, the entire show is listed. 1977 is widely regarded as their finest touring year.
Yeah, I get errors on FLAC decode of Brown Eyed Women. If you check "Decode through errors" you end up with *most* of the song, but the start is missing.

To Paul in the penultimate comment: The program I use to decode flac (or change ANY audiophile) is called dbpowerAMP; there is no "Decode through errors" option (that I see).
What free windows program has that option,& I'll try it out?

I don't know if this helps or not, but I recall a "Rocksy Music" show where there was a problem with one or two corrupted tracks on the second disc and 7 Zip was the only program that would successfully convert it. Its worth a try until Dave can get it fixed properly.

To Randy, the ultimate comment: 7zip would only be useful if there were issues un-RARing the archives. The problem we're seeing is with the un-archived FLAC file.

What I've encountered is that it extracts fine and if I right click on the track it reads as though it is taking up space however when I transfer to the burner it isn't able to read it. Interesting....it's as though it doesn't exist....

This is coming from the background of a GD newbie (albeit a 52 yr old newbie) who just discovered the GD about 3 months ago.
Have listened to much during that time.
It remains Dark Star that not only drew me in,but is a favorite.
The questions,both objective & subjective:
1.Earliest 2-3 concerts playing Dark Star...
..and the latest (with Garcia) for the same
.I would love to compare how it changed over decades.
2.Longest 2-3 Dark Star's in concert?
3.Lastly,are there fan favorites as to the best for Dark Star; I appreciate its subjective,but just like there are generally acknowledged pinnacle concerts (like Barton Hall) I am sure there must be the same for this pivotal song.

I don't think the problem is with the compressed file. I repaired the fils with the recovery record and unzipped the files again and still the "Brown-Eyed Women" Disc 1 Track 4 is not playable. I think the poroblem is with the source file.
Eric, first let me tell you that a few of the shows I gave to Dave have Dark Stars, so be prepared to be surprised with one every now and then. The earliest one is from Feb. 1969. Now to answer as many of your Dark Star questions as I can.
1. The earliest listed Dark Stars in Dead Base are Sept. 3 or 4 1967, Dec. 13, 1967, and Jan. 20 1968.
2. The longest Dark Stars are Aug 28, 1969 63:51, and May 11, 1972 48:38
3.Some of the most cherished versions include: Feb. 13 1970 (most fans favorite) Aug. 27, 1972 (whole band on acid, most psychedelic version, some say scary/apocalyptic, especially if you are tripping while listening). Feb. 27, 1969 (featured on the "Live Dead" commercial release). I gave Dave 2-26-69 and it contains Dark Star. Apr. 8, 1972 (one of the "prettiest" Dark Stars). Dec. 31, 1978 (first Dark Star since 1974). July 14, 1984 (Shooting star seen during the Dark Star encore, this show can be found on Qualitybootz). There are more, but these should keep you busy.

You know,I was both lucky & unlucky in my timing of discovering the Dead.
Lucky in that up till 2 days ago,there was this site,The Jolly Joker: jollyjoke.blogspot.com .
I am more of a downloader-listen on my iPod at my convenience sort of guy,not a stremaing sit-in-front-of-the computer guy.
With my household,just waaaaaaaaaay to many distractions for the latter!
In any case,I was able to download a ton of great stuff from the aforementioned.
Unlucky in that I was unable to see those guys when Garcia was still alive (& I was in a younger,concert-going mode).
However...I know blog sites come-n-go.
If you or ANYONE gets wind of Jolly Joker opening up with a new url,PLEASE LET US KNOW.
Its a funny Catch-22 with blogs..once a site goes down,the default error message tells you to contact the blog author...which is of course the single thing you CAN'T do,as the site went down.

Never heard of Jolly Joker before. Good luck finding them again. Internet archive offers downloads as well, but most of the Dead ones are audience, which are not to be sneezed at because the Dead allowed taping and tape decks didn't need to be hidden. With technology improvements the quality of the recordings got much better in the 80s.
I saw the Dead with Jerry a number of times, but wasn't really into them until I saw them in 1992 under the proper influence ;^)
The day Jerry died, I came home from work to find mail order tickets for their upcoming tour in my mailbox. I still have them.
Jolly Joker was taken down because it was hosting illegal material. It had all the grateful dead discography and other bands. I was appalled at this site and glad it went down. Buy the music and support the artists!

In f/u,to ask/clarify 3 things said:
1.When you say "I gave Dave 2-26-69 and it contains Dark Star. "...we are waiting that to be posted..?..if already posted,where is it,I do not see it.
2.When you say "July 14, 1984 (Shooting star seen during the Dark Star encore"...do you mean the Greek Theatre post dated July 13th? (or is there another concert of the 14th not posted yet? Which is the correct date for the shooting star one?
Also,if one checks Archive.org,there is no listing of Dark Star from EITHER of the Sept dates of 1967...does that mean that , Dec. 13, 1967 is the very first performned Dark Star?..if so,do you have that to post?

1. 2-26-69 is yet to be posted by Dave. Be patient, it will come out one of these days. He has tons of other stuff from other sources to consider as well.
2. Yes, my bad there. It is 7-13-84, not 7-14. The Greek is an outdoor venue and and according to a review of the show, after the band had taken the stage for the encore, but before they started playing, a shooting star streaked across the sky, seen by most of the audience. Then a single audience member shouted out "Dark Star" which was followed by the opening notes: Da da da da, da da da da...... It gives me shivers just typing it.
3. I looked in Archive and the 7-3 or 4-67 show has never been posted there. It doesn't mean that it isn't out there somewhere though. I'm sorry to say that it isn't in my vast collection of GD cassettes.
If Dave is ever interested in posting a particular show, and it is in my collection I will do the work necessary to get it converted and uploaded to him. I have so many shows, but I have never organized them by date. Maybe on a rainy winter day someday...

Thanks Randy and Dave for some good ol' grateful dead. Shame on the brainchild who divided up Scarlet>Fire. I just put Sugar Mags and Johnney B Goode on the end of CD 1 and was able to keep Scarlet>Fire together on CD 2. Rock on.
I'm not too fond of splitting Scarlet>Fire either. But I'm less fond of putting the encores in the middle of the show, which does occur on one or two of the other GD shows that I gave to Dave. Its a personal thing though, whatever works for you.

It doesn't sound familiar to me and I don't have it highlighted in my beat up old Dead Base, but that isn't the final word. I really won't know until I organize all my tapes.
Is Samson & Delilah in these links? It didn't download the first time round?
I just checked and no, I'm sorry, Samson And Delilah was not on the discs. Deal was the last track on Disc 1 and Scarlet>Fire was the first track on the second disc.
Randy, thanks for sharing this awesome show. Very strong from start to finish. Casey Jones gets things off on the right foot. The show wouldn't be the same without the Brown Eyed Women (love that song Cornell 77 is my favorite version). Truckin'>Other One smokes. Great show!

Randy, speaking of Truckin>Other One, any chance you sent Dave 11/14/1973? What a transition into a smoking Other One. Guaranteed to get those dormant chemicals to act up. I used to have a copy on tape, but "He's Gone". Then theres 8/27/72...
Just put Johnny B Goode on CD1 and you can put Scarlet>Fire back together on CD2.
11/14/73 was not the list of shows I gave Dave, nor was 8/27/72. I have 8/27/72 on a VHS tape (audio only) somewhere around here, but every time I've tried to transfer it to cassette, I get sound fluctuation that wasn't on the VHS tape. Maybe if I go straight to .wav files... I'm not sure about 11/14/73. It isn't highlighted in my Dead Base, but most of set 2 11/17/73 is and so is all of 11/21/73. The tapes from '73 in my collection that stand out most in my memory are 5/26/73 @ Kezar Stadium (a 3 set show!) and 6/9/73 @ RFK Stadium.

The Allman Bros. did not sit in on the 9th. However on the 10th, the Allman Bros. and Merle Saunders sat in for the entire 3rd set.
Another good show is 3-14-1981, Hartford. I had a great audience tape from that show that disappeared at a party many moons ago.

Michael, I don't think you live close enough to pull this station in on your receiver, but you can stream it online. On Sunday nights from 9PM-11PM there is a show called "The Music Never Stops" and the DJ, Barry Smollen, broadcasts entire GD shows, in chunks. It may take him 3 weeks to get you a whole show, but he does it. The show used to be on from 8PM-!@PM on Fridays and he was able to give a whole set each week along with live tapes of other jam bands. That is where I became familiar with Ominous Seapods, moe. String Cheese Incident, Disco Biscuits, Ekoostik Hookah and many others. It is also where my many shoe boxes of cassettes GD & JGB concerts came from.I hope you and others tune in, light up a "sabbath candle" ;^) and enjoy!
That Playin' from 8-27-1972 is real good. In fact the whole show is outstanding. Read someplace that they used a 16 track to record it.

That wasn't the Tori show that I gave to Dave. You still have that to look forward to! With that screen name, you must've lived in the San Diego area at one point in time or another. Or maybe you were stationed there. I still have an email account that reflects when I used to live in L.A. I'm up the coast a little ways now.
Hey Randy! Actually spent my junior yr. in college at San Diego State University as part of a university of NH exchange program but no, never was in the service. The # refers to my sobriety date...a long strange trip indeed.
Regarding Dark Star 7/13/84, Greek Theatre...I heard a tape long ago made by a guy from the east coast who had a tip that the band would break out DS that night, jumped through all kinds of hoops and made it there, scored a ticket, and got in...he tells the story with that DS playing as back ground. According to his tip, the reason for playing was that Phil had received pictures from NASA mission to Mars from his friends at NASA, and he had them projected behind the band as they played.
Another version that is fun to listen to but not as good as 70s versions is 10/8 or 10/9 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA where they broke it out again, this time leaving it in rotation...it is the crowd's reaction that makes it great.

Trippinjohn, I think that same guy tells his story in The Deadhead's Taping Compendium. If it isn't him, its someone else from back east that got the tip and did everything he could to be at that show. There was no mention of the NASA photos in the story. I just checked, this story was told by John Dwork.
