Bob Dylan: Paris 1978 (Ex Aud) FLAC

"BORDER BENEATH THE SUN: DEFINITIVE EDITION"

LINEAGE: Original Thinman silvers (Thinman 012/013) -> WAV (EAC v0.99 prebeta 5 - secure, Offset "actual") -> FLAC (flacfrontend, level 6) -> You

DATE: Pavilon De Paris, Paris, France July 6th 1978
QUALITY: Excellent Audience
OU COMMENTS: Absolutely essential listen - performance and quality is incredible. One of the best recordings of 1978. All Paris shows were excellent, allthough the first (July 3rd) and the last (July 8th) were probably the finest ones (performance-wise). But this July 6th show is Paris show which is captured in the best quality of the 5.
Think I've listened through this bootleg about 90 times....never get tired of it
Personal favourites on this "Border Beneath The Sun" concert is Mr Tambourine Man, It's All Over Now baby Blue, Changing Of The Guards and True Love Tends To Forget....or actually, there's even more highlights here.
Strange that a lot of people live in the belief that 1978 was a so-so "live year" for Dylan; due to the official "At Budokan" (recorded in early 1978). Bob's performances in Europe and US in June-Dec 1978 were exceptional, while the early stage of the tour (Japan and Australia) was not comparable at all to what Dylan and his band transformed it to after a few months on the road. (IMO)
Here's hoping that Dylan will release a 1978 show in a forthcoming "Bootleg Series" -release.....if I could pick and choose, I'd say Blackbushe July 15th.

The Intro/Outro "bookend" the broadcast very nicely.

Lineage: FM broadcast (12-Mar-1978) > Recorded (by me) on long-forgotten cassette deck on cheap Scotch brand tape > Sony TC-WE475 > Flying Calf A/D converter > M-Audio Delta DiO 2496 > Adobe Audition (much needed hiss/noise reduction) > WAV > TLH > FLAC6

OU: The final result is far from perfect, but still quite good considering its age (and the low quality of the original cheap cassette tape!).
Parental Advisory - Explicit Language: This show is a completely uncensored record of a classic Dave Van Ronk performance. It is politically incorrect and contains the "F word". That is part of its inestimable charm.
I have tracked Dave's talking mostly separately. He covers a fascinating range of topics: from the merits of Randy Newman's "Short People" to the musical preferences of amorous 14-year olds to Robert Graves' "I Claudius" to Jelly Roll Morton (to name just a few).
Enjoy!

As Radio 2 celebrates Bob Dylan's 70th birthday, the cream of the British folk scene re-interprets songs from his iconic album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Mark Radcliffe guides us through a collection of specially recorded songs that illustrate not only Dylan's great writing skills, but also the inventiveness and creativity of British folk artists, some of whom inspired a young Dylan when he first visited Britain in the early 1960s.
Although Freewheelin' is Dylan's second studio album, it initiated the process of writing contemporary words to traditional melodies. Eleven of the thirteen songs on the album are original compositions and it contains several that came to be regarded as his best and classics of the 1960s folk scene: Blowin' in the Wind, Masters of War, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.
In December 1962, partway through recording Freewheelin', a young Bob Dylan came to London for the first time where he met English folk singer Martin Carthy. Carthy taught Dylan the traditional songs Scarborough Fair and Lord Franklin, both of which would appear on the album just months later as Girl from the North Country and Bob Dylan's Dream. Almost fifty years on, we come full circle, as Bob Dylan's Dream is performed by Martin Carthy himself.
The cast list is a roll call of British folk's premier talents, with the complete track listing as follows:

01. Programme Intro
02. Blowin' in the Wind - Seth Lakeman
03. Girl from the North Country - Thea Gilmore
04. Masters of War - Martin Simpson

TAPER: Barry Rogoff (Balrog)
SOURCE: Original Master Tapes: Nakamichi 550, CM-100/CP-1's > Maxell UD-XLII
TRANSFER: November 2008, at 48KHz/24 bit resolution. Downsampled to standard CD resolution here
LINEAGE: Nak Dragon [Dolby B out] > RDL FP-UBC6 > MOTU 896 > Wave [48KHz/24 bit] > Izotope RX/CEP 2.0/Izotope Ozone > Wave (44.1khz,16-bits)> FLAC
ORIGINAL ART by Gromek
REMASTER SUMMARY: All work done at the 48/24 resolution, before downsampling. EQ work to reveal detail, as the audience heard and felt it. At least one very annoying local audience whistler has amplitude reduced by 1 dB at various points where no Yes signal occurs, but otherwise no attempts to alter band-crowd-venue sound balance. If
crowd sound as real and detailed as band sound isn't desired, please pass this by and stick to soundboards or industry releases.
No compression. Conservative noise reduction applied to compensate for unfavorable signal to noise ratio during quieter band moments and to further reveal midrange frequency detail, but some hiss has to be tolerated to avoid signal damage. Pitch- tempo was approximately 1% off, now corrected.
CONTRAST: Previously circulated as a "Highland" profit boot factory affair, made from a 2nd or more generation tape dub and a sonic mudslide. In B77 you have the original master tapes, transferred at 48/24 resolution, and carefully remastered with deep Yes familiarity.
You also have the complete source and lineage info.

NOTE FROM ONE OFFICIAL "BLIND" B80 PROJECT TEST GROUP LISTENER:
"1977 seemed to be the only year without at least one really outstanding Yes audience capture. The idea of a Balrog capture of a '77 show, therefore, was extremely enticing. Listening [nonetheless] to the raw version of AYAI was a very strange experience--the exact same performance, but without the "presence" and visceral excitement the mastering brought.
"The percussive metals [now] have that incredibly lifelike definition that seems to be one of Lestat’s specialties. And almost every emergence of Howe's pedal steel brought goosebumps. Frankly, I'm not sure that I've ever enjoyed a performance of AYAI this much- -while a great song, it is one of those perennials in Yes shows that rarely stands out as very special.  But something about this performance does
feel special--as if the whole "sunshiny Alpine" vibe of GFTO carries over to this song as well here. Yet, I didn't have that same sense when listening to the raw version. The mastering really allowed a level of majesty to come through in a way I wouldn't have thought possible.
"I really, really like what was done with this tape. [Yes] doesn't sound distant at all, and have a nice, warm tonality, with an almost holographic stereo image (particularly surprising given the taping position). The only real sonic impediment is that '77 swish/swirl effect, but that is far outweighed by the sonic pleasures on offer here. This is a HUGE improvement over the other '77 shows I've heard - I have a much greater sense of 'being there' than with any of those other shows. The pipe organ and pedal steel sounds are nothing short of otherworldly!
In any event, I've really been enjoying this, and can't wait for the entire release!"
- "NorthNYMark"
"I'm pleased to have once again had the chance to participate in the pre-torrenting review of this new Balrog/Lestat production. What I learned off the bat is that each recording reviewed must be evaluated on its own merits and not simply the pedigree attached to it. B78, B79 and B80 set the bar very high. So with this in mind, I fought my way past caveats listed and concentrated on the following:
"the astounding up front vocals of Jon the ever nimble fret work of Steve the great low end bass sounds of Chris the heroic drumming of Alan especially during Awaken when it seemed the Band was going off the rails, and especially: "the fact the full power of this band is captured by a gentleman sitting in the cheap seats of the Garden in 1977!!
"These facts, combined with Lestat's audio engineering magic, result in a recording that matches if not exceeds the best captures from the GFTO tour already circulating. So give a listen and see if you don't get goose bumps like I did. Go on- I dare you!" - "Jackstraw"

NOTES FROM THE PRODUCERS:
Almost without exception, circulating GFTO recordings shows have been hollow, muddy affairs, as if the gods of recording had determined that music of such magnificence should not be heard unfettered; the best a listener could hope for was that whistlers and clappers didn't overwhelm the recording, and the recordist didn't have a flip mid-Awaken.
Boston 1977 is that exception: bright, clean and absolutely MUST be considered strictly in context of ARs from the 1977 GOING FOR THE ONE Yes tour to be fully appreciated, especially by those already familiar with others by its taper from other years.
Despite many problems described below, B77’s dynamic range, detail, lifelike presence, and balance among GFTO tour ARs now stand nearly if not completely alone, and were enough to deliver sound after the restoration process far exceeding both taper’s and my expectations.
When I first analyzed the raw master I knew it could eventually offer more depth and detail than most GFTO shows in circulation, but due to a number of negatives both unique to it and universal to 1977 Yes audience captures even I dared not dream it would ever come out this well.
Even with the best tapers and equipment involved, due to sound system configuration and road engineer peculiarities GFTO tour arena ARs simply did not tape well from the audience. There are no exceptions. Some small venue captures from Europe appear to be better in many ways thanks to less ‘swallowing’ of PA output and less taper distance, but these in turn are represented in circulation either tape generations
removed or poorly mastered or both. Most audience captures from the 1970s remain rough. In Yes’ case the best ones from either side of 1977 beat even the best ones from 1977 for uniformly high sound quality.
B77 is an arena event, in an arena of legendarily bad acoustics. Its taper had a mediocre location relative to stage and sound system. The resulting problems of band to crowd volume ratio, greater interference with soundstage by crowd movement near mikes, seeming additional imbalance in PA output mix, and quieter Yesworks largely crossing a sonic ‘event horizon’ will be noticeable at times.
We at "BLG" actually like detailed crowd sound and consider it a critical part of the event reality, but at least one whistler right in the mikes is most irritating. Clapping also more prominent as expected. Neither over modulate or distort however, and are fairly confined between Yes numbers.
Local crowd movement effects the opening stanzas of "Parallels" and "Close to the Edge", where high frequencies suddenly become much more detailed about 30 seconds to 1 minute in, and what sounds like a left channel dropout during "AYAI" is another symptom.
"Wondrous Stories", "Turn of the Century" and softer parts of other pieces are the most disappointing moments in this and many other ARs of the tour thanks to the arena ‘event horizon’ effect. Excepting some of Alan White’s metals, much Yessound almost ‘disappears’ during these numbers and it’s aggravated by a couple of items described just below.
Some definition in Squire’s bass even during full-bore moments is also lost amidst related Boston Garden ‘boom’.
Happily these problems mitigated quite well, without altering natural PA output mix, with all Yes parts now more ‘upfront’ and in balance with each other than most GFTO tour offerings - but they’ll still be noticeable at times.
Add to them the universal GFTO tour problems of uneven PA amplitude and ‘swish/swirl’ [henceforth "SS"] - a hideous distortion of certain high frequencies afflicting Yes ARs from 1977 like no other year or tour after TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS [although it seems to have made a nasty comeback in 1980]. For the most part it involves certain percussive metals, but occasionally other things too. When it rears up it can be beyond aggravating.
SS cannot be edited out or effectively mitigated with any software, and despite so many outstandingly good features B77 has an unusually severe case of it. We’re nearly certain it results when already uneven, poorly aimed PA output is interfered with by crowd movement [even air movement] and interacts with microphone diaphragms in ways it seems not to with eardrums at the event. The more distant the taper
from PA system the worse it gets, but even front and center it can be bad.
Meanwhile, at least one Yes insider has reported the soundman in 1977 had high end hearing loss. This would explain at least in part many unpleasant GFTO tour anomalies, the plague of SS among them even though it was probably not noticed by actual audiences. It also easily explains why recordings from the tour including its YESSHOWS selections are so trebly, and PA volume frequently so uneven.
We then have added 1977 cassette tape hiss and a ‘tunnely’ property resulting from the particular venue and taping position. These could be mitigated thankfully, but only to a degree without damaging signal and badly altering natural sound capture properties [commonly attempted in other GFTO tour ARs with disastrous results].
Finally, Yes’ early GFTO performances were rough by Yes standards. Arrangements and improvisations were far smoother and more elegant by the time they hit Europe in November. In B77 - one of the earliest GFTO shows - we hear more than a few flubs and it seems the new material had a lot of developing to do onstage. Happily, like sound quality it turns out to have been a better performance than the raw
master let on - one of the major benefits of the remaster.
-Lestat, February 2009

INDEPENDENT SOUND ANALYSIS:
Several trusted 'beta testers', including Barry, Gromek, NorthNYMark and others. Even with the especially severe SS every member of the project test group has told us they found B77 more detailed and realistic sounding than any other GFTO tour AR in their collections, and they are fanatical Yes collectors. My reaction as well, and though it’s unlikely to be universally shared it’s enough we expect most listeners will be ecstatic.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Many thanks to Yes, then and now.
Special thanks to Gromek for artwork [as always] so perfectly evocative of the show's energy and this effort.
Endless, endless thanks to Barry for another miraculous AR, the expertise, bravery and sacrifice of enjoyment it required.

NOTES FROM BARRY:
I went to four shows in 1977: Springfield 8/10, Boston twice (8/12 and 8/13?)*, and Providence 8/15. I taped the two for which I had the best seats (8/12 and 8/15) and was very lucky to catch Yours Is No Disgrace as the second encore in both. Along with Starship Trooper, it was Steve Howe at his improvisational peak.
As Lestat notes, the sound quality of the GFTO tour was poor in comparison to the "in the round" Tormato and Drama years that followed. The traditional arena arrangement with the stage at one end of the floor varied in sound quality depending on the building acoustics and may have been at its worst in the boomy old Boston
Garden.
For that reason, this recording has never had an authorized remaster before now. I made a few trade copies back in ‘77 but I was much more excited about the Providence 8/15 show, which was made from much better seats. I almost had a WBCN DJ convinced to play some Providence tracks on FM radio during a Yes marathon but, when I arrived at the station, discovered that they had no quarter-track reel-to-reel decks.
Providence was a PRRP release called "Musical Rainbows" that’s been well circulated by now. Both Providence and Boston have appeared in the form of the usual commercial bootleg garbage.
My goal in taping concerts has always been to achieve time travel. I want go back in time and relive musical experiences that were much too important to me to allow them to be heard once and lost forever. And I want the experience to be available to everyone who loves the music.
Anyone who has ever taped a concert knows that there's a price to pay, not only in terms of money spent and risk taken, but that making a good recording is work. You have to monitor the equipment and that diminishes your enjoyment of the show. Once again, I want to point out how much Lestat's remastering work makes up for that loss. Other than the absence of smoke in the air and the ambience of the old Boston
Garden, it's not much different from being there. I sincerely hope it provides the same experience for you.
* Not 100% sure about this date. I think it was a second show added on after the first one sold out. In any case, it’s not listed on Forgotten Yesterdays.

NOTES FROM GROMEK
Even though we’re warned at great length above of all the problems in all audience recordings from the GOING FOR THE ONE tour including this one, I’ll be surprised if this one does not go into history as one of the absolute best sounding live recordings to ever circulate among Yes fans! I even think it’s the best one to date to come out of the "BLG" treasure chest, especially considering the year and tour.
As a ‘beta tester’ it was an absolute pleasure to listen to this show. The sound is amazing, it’s clear and full bodied, like any live recording should sound. Certainly for a recording of its age, and from 1977!
As before I am happy and proud to be a part of the "BLG" team. "B" and "L" both have done an amazing job in bringing this recording to us all for our enjoyment."B" has taken all the risks in getting his equipment into the venue, but got away with it, and has produced a beautiful recording. "L" has done absolute wonders with the recording, and has made it sound even better.
I salute both, and hope they both will continue to do their voodoo that they both do so well, so they can bring pleasure to all who wish to hear a good recording of good music.
My part in this project is creating the cover art for this particular recording, and although I have to say that my part is the easiest part of the whole process and package, I am still very happy to do it, and I sincerely do hope you all will approve and enjoy what I created. I hope it gives you that little bit extra that you may need when listening to this wonderful recording!
That would make it all worth while for me, to create a bridge between the show, sound, the story behind it and the imagery on and in the cover art made.
So place this disc in you cd player, sit back and enjoy the ride. It will blow you away!

NOTES FROM RAMBLE ON JOE [project test listener, musician and writer in residence]
Boston 1977: The return of Rick Wakeman
From the beginning, Jon shows the strong assured voice which so moved Tony Wilson to write so favorably about the band back in 1968. As noted, there are some minor PA mix problems (mainly in the bass), though these improve through the first part of the show. This doesn’t really matter; from the opening strains of the "Firebird Suite", Barry’s tape provides the clear, clean sonics so painfully missing from practically every tape available of this tour. Despite his caveats about location and nearby whistlers, this is easily the best 1977 Yes capture to reach these ears - it’s tempting to quote from "Circus of Heaven":
"Was that something beautiful, amazing, wonderful, extraordinarily beautiful?"
To which the pragmatic Barry would respond: "Oh it was OK" - well aware that you simply can’t capture the best sound at the back of the hall (echo) near a wall (muddy bass). There’s the occasional tape flaw, which is only to be expected in a cassette three decades old.
The amazing thing is that he did in fact make an excellent capture which still sounds great today, and the performance itself more than compensates for the occasional technical issue.
As for the band themselves, their enthusiasm exceeds themselves: in "All Good People", it sounds like Steve is actually throwing in extra notes in those incredibly fast runs. Rick was of course busily up front right from the opening song, and puts a little middle-eastern edge into his CTTE solo. "Close to the Edge" is especially rewarding, as it opens with such fury it’s a wonder the band didn’t tear themselves apart. It’s nice to hear Alan so thoroughly in charge, alternately pushing & holding the band. This actually frees Chris to be even more inventive, and he adds little fills into CTTE I hadn’t noticed before.
But let’s get back to Jon - it’s easy to focus on such heavyweight instrumentalists, but how about the singer? In food, there’s a term from the Japanese, unami, which describes any given food at its peak, in its best presentation - the state in which it just couldn’t be any better.
For Jon’s voice, that’s arguably 1977: his voice was fully mature and strong, built up by a decade of performing, and not yet middle-aged; he takes on the high notes with grace and confidence, rarely showing any sign of strain. In addition, he had the GOING FOR THE ONE material (and band!), all of which showcased his voice beautifully.
The band seems to have realized this. Unlike every other tour, there are no solo instrumental spots -- all the performances are full band songs, and Jon takes the reins without hesitation, song after song. By comparison, the band themselves are still feeling out the material at this early date; "Going for the One" isn’t performed, the so-called "Flight Jam" leading into "Awaken" would become more focused later in the tour, and "Awaken" itself isn’t quite as well realized as we need it to be.
"Starship Trooper" begins to make up for this, as Rick reminds us again why he was wanted back in the band: one minute he’s stodgily serious, the next as playful as a kid with a new synthesizer. Sure I wish Steve’s guitar was louder, but that doesn’t have to spoil our pleasure in a perfectly good "Trooper" replete with synth explosions - especially when that’s followed by a "Roundabout" performed with real
vigor. Check out Steve’s feedback swells during the quiet part, and Rick’s organ solo - all to resolve on a resoundingly triumphant final chord -- really good stuff!
Had they left it there, we’d be content to call it a strong & complete show, but the band pulls a final surprise by playing a second encore - a rarity for any band. But this is Yes, and they’ve already played all their usual encore material - what could they play? No easy way out here, folks: two hours into the show, and the band tackles "Yours Is No Disgrace" with no sign of fatigue: Steve burns through his solo,
and Jon still sings like he has energy and range to spare. What a night for Boston; what a night for Yes; what a treat for the fans in attendance!
And now, thanks to Balrog and Lestat, we finally have an audience capture of a show from the GOING FOR THE ONE tour approaching the quality of "B78" and "B79". Even a brief exposure may result in an unwillingness to listen to other tapes from this tour; for that, we apologize, and note that it’s an unavoidable (if not entirely
unintended) consequence. We think it’s a risk worth taking; we hope you think so too.

Please share freely but losslessly, and never, EVER even THINK of selling for any sum anywhere. Reseed or redistribute this recording in its complete and original form only. Should we become aware of an incomplete reseed or distribution, we will publicly discredit the party responsible.
On that note, be also vigilant against for-profit `boot factory' ripoffs. We've seen this done with our work already. While flattering they'd covet it on the one hand, the dishonesty of it and idea of anyone spending good money for what can be had freely are both infuriating. Last time it happened Gromek's fabulous art was dumped in favor of the usual boot factory crap, and none of the lineage/process info provided here was included in the ripoff either. Truly criminal - intellectually as much as legally.

The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 27
December 03, 1976 - My Father's Place - Long Island, NY, USA

Recording Equipment: Internal Mic - Sanyo tape deck - Alesis TapeLinkUSB - Audacity - WAV
Taper: Lostbrook
Mastering: CQ

OU: For the second December in a row, the Strawbs delivered a high-energy, dramatic performance to a wildly enthusiastic Calderone crowd. There was a chemistry between the band and the Calderone audience as the Strawbs created a unique concert atmosphere with powerful mellotrons, Dave Lambert’s blistering guitar, and Dave Cousins’ poetic lyrics and voice. I recorded this from the eighth row on the left-center aisle, surrounded by a multitude of friends. There’s more chatter on this tape than I care to admit, but most of it is related to the photographs being taken by my friend Howie. Perhaps we would have been quieter if we had known that the Strawbs wouldn’t be back for another eight years.

OU Notes: Nice intimate solo show of Aaron along with only his pianist running through an eclectic mix of songs, kind of a New Orleans version of the great american songbook of material that influenced Aaron. Even though the show was sold out months prior this was a surprise broadcast not announced until something like 45 minutes prior to the show. Luckily Mr Freezer happened to be near his radio when they made the announcement capturing this gem in full. This a great recording except for the DJ who really needs to learn to stfu when Aaron is singing.

Led Zeppelin: Long Beach 1975 (Ex Aud) FLAC

Acme_Quaalude_F
Acme Quaalude, 3cd (TCD-77-1,2,3) Bootleg License second edition
Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, California, USA - March 11, 1975
from the boxset: Bootleg License, 6cd by Tarantura (TCD-77-78) 1st edition
lineage: silvers>EAC>Flac

By the time Led Zeppelin hit California on their tenth tour of the US, they had also hit the pinnacle of their success as a viable rock band in the seventies. Their last masterwork Physical Graffiti hit the shelves two weeks before and by the middle of March became the fastest selling album in their history and entered number one on the charts. A residual effect was that their older albums also entered the charts. The two Long Beach shows were the second and third in southern California (following the March 10th show in San Diego) and the band loosen up considerably compared to earlier shows on the tour. Being both well advertised and (generally) well received, these two have been in almost constant circulation since the seventies seeing many different releases and have achieved status with Led Zeppelin collectors.
Bootleg License on Tarantura is the latest release of these tapes and in general is a nice improvement over older issues. The March 11th tape is excellent all by itself but Tarantura present a very natural and appealing version of the tape. March 12th is a two source mix and while the main tape is a rough listen, Tarantura’s work with it makes it a significant upgrade over older titles utilizing this source and actually makes the tape enjoyable. The two concerts are packaged in a thick tri-fold cardboard sleeves for each of the shows which fit in a thick glossy cardboard box with a magnet on the site to hold the upper flap down. It is a gorgeous production in limited quantities. The first edition has already sold out with a second edition on its way which also will most likely sell out.
The March 11th show comes from a Mike Millard tape. Many claim this is the first show he recorded on the Nakamichi stereo recorder with AKG Acoustics microphones for these shows. The jump in sound quality between this (and the Pink Floyd show the following month) compared to his tapes of the Yes Topographic shows the previous year is dramatic. The clarity and balance are remarkable for what is arguably the best sounding tape from the entire tour. An early vinyl release for this tape can be found on How Many More Times (Moby’s Dick LZ 31175 A-F D 21-26) with most of the recording but runs too fast. On compact disc it can be found on Long Beach Arena (Bad Girl CDJ1) on two discs and missing “Dazed And Confused,” released in 1991 from Italy. 462 Ocean Boulevard (American Concert Series ACS 037) and its clone California Sunset (American Concert Series PSCD 037) are two other early titles.
The tape was also used on Long Beach 1975 Parts 1&2&3 (Flying Disc Music CD 6 827-829), California 1975 (Post Script PSCD 2201), Pussy & Cock (Tarantura T3CD-6) (running too fast), Long Beach Arena Complete (Confusion Records Confuse 001) (speed corrected), Zeppelin L (Akashic AKA-7) in really nice packaging and California Graffiti (Masterport-233). California Sunshine (Badgeholder BH008-01-02-03) and In The Shadow Of Midnight (Empress Valley Supreme Disc) are the two latest releases of the show and both utilize the second, inferior sounding tape to fill in some of the cuts. Tarantura follow the same path to produce as complete a show as possible. The edits are very smoothly handled.
A review of this show written by Robert Hilburn in the Los Angeles Times really slammed the performance when he writes: “Besides setting box office records on this tour, the English group also may be setting some type of record for the most cliches in a single concert: a manlight show, steam from dry ice covering the stage (three different times), the band’s name spelled out in lights, a laser beam (something an opening act at the Troubadour did last year), an explosion at the rear of the stage and, of course, the obligatory 20-minute drum solo….But Zeppelin’s material is so lacking in both commentary and emotional challenge that the music ends up as an empty exercise in sound. While there are some soft moments (indeed the gentle ‘Stairway To Heaven’ has become the band’s anthem), the thrust of the evening is on heavy, pulsating assaults. The lyrics are often woeful, the themes unaffecting.” (”Led Zeppelin, Cliches And All” March 13th, 1975).
Normally when Zeppelin were loose they produced legendary performances. This show has it’s highlights but is plagued by equipment problems and issues with the PA which seem to distract them onstage. The first hint of problems occurs in the second song where the transition, normally several crashing chords on guitar, is rendered very weak and ineffective. “We must apologize for the slight delay but we couldn’t get into the building. We hadn’t got any tickets. It’s a fact” Plant brags before and excellent version of “Over The Hills And Far Away.”
“If you intend to sit still, well forget it” Plant promises before a monsterous version of “In My Time Of Dying.” Things fall apart in the following song when Page’s twelve string goes out of tune basically ruining the song. “The Rain Song” is played on the six string neck and comes off much better, but afterwards Plant get defensive when he says, “for the benefit of anybody who was making a bootleg then, the twelve-string was out of tune on ‘Song Remains The Same.’” After “Kashmir” Plant mentions Jones’ mellotron, calling it a “Pakistani orchestra, all in one pool player.” John Paul Jones’ showcase “No Quarter” follows. This is about two weeks into the new instrumentation, trading in the organ for the grand piano for the solo. The dark and somber intonations of the 1973 and early 1975 versions were gone as these tapes reveal Jones trying very hard to try all sort of different styles and motifs to find a new direction of the song. Some shows like the Seattle show five days later show that he was lost, but this version hold together well before Page come in with the “No Quarter” solo.
Before “Trampled Underfoot” Plant is speaking about Robert Johnson but is interrupted by the road crew fixing the equipment. “The drumming and the hammering is by courtesy of Acme Quaalude company, Ltd. This is a guy building a chicken pen. Can you hear it?” “Moby Dick” is only twenty minutes long. Page and Bonham try to outdo one another in the opening fanfare and by the end Bonzo lets out a mighty shout. ”Dazed And Confused” clocks in at just under a half hour. Plant includes Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” before the violin bow solo and Page tries some new improvisations during the piece. After the song Plant leads the obligitory ovations for Jimmy Page. “That was a combination of key signatures that just will never occur again. Amidst the rushing and screaming of cowboys. ‘Hello cowboy in the sand’ (singing Neil Young’s song but changing cowgirl to cowboy) and now there comes again a song we really dig.”
After “Stairway To Heaven” the band play the normal encores for this tour. “Whole Lotta Love” is played for a minute before segueing into the theremin histrionics of Page. Tarantura track this five minute piece as “medley” since it also includes an almost complete version of “The Crunge” from Houses Of The Holy. The song is Zeppelin’s uncomfortable take on James Brown funk, but is fun in a live context. The theremin cacophony mutates effortlessly into the riff to “Out On The Tiles” which leads into a heavy version of “Black Dog.” Maybe it’s a problem with the PA but Jones’ bass sounds very loud throughout. ”Ladies and gentlemen of Long Beach, goodnight. Sleep well. And half a Quaalude with water” are Plant’s parting words. Many collectors criticize this show and although it isn’t legendary there is a lot to enjoy on these discs.

OU Notes: A festive crowd on a Tuesday night for the Cars' first performance in 24 years! The sound at Showbox Sodo is always a bit poor, but the show sounded decent. There's a noticible change in overall volume with the start of My Best Friends Girl. The festive crowd makes a few talking appearances during the recording. With luck, someone else taped the show, too. Enjoy.

Probably the best recording of any '74 show to be found. This Australian bootleg caused much confusion when first released. There is no bootleg label, instead it claims to be an RCA / Castle Records release. Because of this it appeared in many High Street record stores in the UK. Sadly, it's now very difficult to find.

OU: I didn’t want to like The Cars when I first became aware of them in 1978. I wanted “Tales from Topographic Oceans 2,” or “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway – The Sequel.” I had forgotten that my roots were firmly planted in the pop music of the 60’s. It took years for me to remember that music didn’t always have to be complex and serious. The Cars reminded me that music could still be fun.

Taper's Comments: Here's BAD COMPANY touring on their first album. About the worst mix I ever heard on any of the "In Concert" shows. Way too bass heavy in my opinion, but it is what it is. Still a nice performance.
This show comes from a great but short lived series that ran on ABC-TV circa 1973-75. Since this is way before stereo TV, you could watch the visual portion on TV, and they would simulcast on certain FM stations the stereo sound. While the sound and mixes are primitive by today's standards, they weren't too bad for the times. I'm happy to have what I have, and pissed that I missed a lot of them too. I think the show was broadcast on Friday nights, but I could be wrong on that.

Master Soundboard- recorded on my Nakamichi BX 300 Dolby C Maxell MX tape > Tascam CD-RW 2000

OU: I have seen this show on collectors lists over the years and always get a chuckle out of it. My cousin was the soundman for this show and I plugged my Nak BX 300 in and got the soundboard recording.
The Danger Brothers were a local band from the Simsbury/Avon area of CT. Their sister was married to one of my cousins, Chuck, his brother, Chris was in a band and had PA equipment that he would rent out at times. When the Danger Brothers booked the show with Big Al opening up at Geminis in Simsbury, Chris was hired to set up the PA and run the sound.
I included the Danger Brothers encore with Big Al sitting in that is not on circulating copies. I only gave this part to one or two people when I first sent it to friends. Three Danger Brothers orginals and Big River, the Johnny Cash classic.

This is EX++ quality ,the Al set is excellent, the last 3 songs of his solo set especially.
Notes above are Scott's. Notes below are Skyraider's:

Transfer: cd-r > EAC (secure) > WAV > Goldwave (adjust track splits, etc.) > Flac Frontend > flac

Thanks to Scott for sharing this great master. A version of this was shared on Easytree a while back, but this is a big improvement.

David Bowie: Cleveland 1972 (VG- Aud) FLAC

From Bassman's David Bowie Page: Another great Australian release! I had never heard of a tape of this Cleveland show before, so it was a very nice and big surprise when this CD was released. It is the complete show, and it is easy to see that it is a late US '72 show, becuase the omission of MY DEATH in favour of the "new" song DRIVE-IN SATURDAY. Before DRIVE-IN SATURDAY Bowie asks the people with tape recorders to leave, because now they are going to play a new unreleased song! The strange title comes from ANDY WARHOL where he sings "va va va voom" before the guitar solo part. The sound quality is rather good, and the cover is smashing. A short story about the US Tour of 1972 is told on the cover. A true must!

CD 3 (36:54)
1. Whole Lotta Love
2. Weekend
3. Gallows Pole

Borrowed from TBL/Underground Uprising: This new release uses what is believed to be a fourth(!) source tape from the Ipswich, UK show of 17 November 1971. Previous versions of this show on bootleg included "Two Penny Upright", "Over the 12 Foot End", "Ipswich 1971" (TDOLZ), and the original "Feelin' Groovy" (Empress Valley). One or both of two original good/very good source tapes were used for the first 3 titles mentioned. "Feelin' Groovy" used a near excellent third source tape. All sources were not complete, missing at least the last 5 minutes of the WLL medley and any encores.
This new fourth source tape is very good in quality and is the 2nd best of the four. All instruments are very clear. Plant seems at bit low in the mix, but that may be the result of the PA system. The recording "crumbles" with the band's sheer volume at a couple of points, mainly the first crashing notes of songs such as R&R and BD. What makes this source special is that the WLL medley is complete for the first time and two encore tracks are presented, the rarely played "Weekend" and The even rarer "Gallows Pole".
"Gallow's Pole", like it's previous appearance on a bootleg recording at Copenhagen from the previous May, seems to be played by Page on his Gibson double-neck guitar. This version is similar to the Copenhagen one, with Bonzo underlining the end of each verse with drum crashes. The band seems rather confident with this version (which is amazing, considering how infrequently this song was played live) and Page's guitar noodling at the end of the song is shorter than that at Copenhagen. With the improved recording quality, compared to Copenhagen, this track is a real pleasure, IMO.
As for the rest of the CD, STH, TTW, and Tangerine appear to be missing on the new source tape. Empress Valley used the near excellent source from its previous version of this show for STH and TTW, but inexplicably Tangerine is from one of the original source tapes and is distant and muddy sounding.
If they tried, Empress Valley could have released this new source on two discs, as Plant's dialogue and the opening notes of WLL are included at the end of disc two and repeated at the beginning of disc three. This is a shame, considering the high prices charged by this "premium" bootleg label.
The packaging is similar to other Empress Valley releases, with the discs recessed in a heavy cardboard "block" with a slipcover wrapping up the package. Photos from November 1969(!) were used on the cover.
There has been some speculation that a third encore of "Communication Breakdown" was played at this show, so stayed tuned for "Feelin' Groovy Definitive Definitive Edition". :-) -Chris Gust, Nov 2000

*about the SQ of track 6. (jandanfan explanation) Indeed, it looks like the speed is changing a lot. IMHO the speed variations are only heard in the organ parts.(at 0:15;1:00;1:36..). If you listen clearly, the pitch of bob's voice and the guitar (in the right channel), drums etc doesn't change. I think it's a little joke of the organplayer who fiddled around with his knobs.

Hawkwind: Various Sources 1972-1990 (FLAC)

Front
"Dawn of Hawkwind"
This is NOT the official CD of the same title, this is a bootleg of rare live recordings from between 1972 and 1990. Some have been released before on vinyl, others have (as far as I know) not.
Quality and levels are variable, but the BBC tracks are excellent, and it's a good chance to get hold of the Roundhouse tracks as originally released.

01. Silver Machine (4.09)
02. Brainstorm (5.18)
03. Master of the Universe (7.25)
04. Announcements (0.56)
05. Born to Go (13.11)
06. Silver Machine (4.52)
07. Welcome to the Future (2.32)
08. Dawn/Sunrise (7.42)
09. Frisco Jam (8.39)
10. Silver Machine/Paranoia (7.24)
11. Master of the Universe (6.17)
12. Needle Gun (4.22)

Tracks 1 & 2 from BBC Transcription disc 1972. In other words they're BBC radio sessions, not live.
Tracks 3-5 from the Roundhouse 13th Jan 1972, presumably straight from the vinyl album "Greasy Truckers Party".
Tracks 6-7 from the same gig, from the "Glastonbury Fayre" triple album. ("Hello Eric...")
Track 8 from Trentishoe Festival, 28/6/72.
Track 9 from San Francisco soundcheck, 17/12/90
Tracks 10 & 11 from the live album "Bristol Custom Bike Show", recorded 20/6/86.
Track 12 from Ritzy Aberdeen soundcheck, 19/22/85.

OU: I got this show back around 1974 in a trade, and have never seen it anywhere since. While the sound isn't the greatest, I'm posting it ( and two more shows latter), due to it's obscurity, which I hope makes up for the average sound quality. if someone has a better copy, please post it. We can never get enough Byrds!
