Led Zeppelin: The Unmarked Mike Millard Masters 1975 and 1977 (Download Friendly) FLAC

as promised!
0014ee46
Previously uncirculated set of unmarked tapes for this show transferred with Dolby B on as per Mike's notes on the tape labels using an adjustable outboard Dolby B unit. This is the 1st time (May 2010) these tapes have ever been digitized. The sound is completely unaltered except for pitch correction during playback and fades added for each of the tape flips.
Mike Millard UNMARKED Led Zeppelin - newly made available.

The fan recording of a concert is really an extension of taking snapshots of your heroes. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s recordable media was just making its way into households as a consumer electronic device, either an expensive reel-to-reel deck or a convenient cassette recording deck. Just imagine sneaking one of those into a concert these days. More likely, the stealth recorder of choice today would be a mini-disc recorder or your handphone. Small enough to fit your pocket.
But Michael Millard was different. He arrived early at concerts near his home, pulled out a wheelchair from the boot of his car and proceeded to wheel himself into the arena as an invalid. He managed to secure front row "seats", almost always front and center. Hidden underneath his wheelchair was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck hooked up to two high-quality AKG mics. Security guards in those days were probably unaware of such goings on.
His recordings were much sought after for their quality - capturing the expanse of the stage plus the great ambience of the halls. His close proximity eliminated any echo from his recordings. All the instruments recorded right off the front speakers. But Millard had a habit of marking his tapes when he copied them for another collector or fan. He would, for instance, lower the levels when transferring the audio to a VHS tape or lower the volume in mid-song when making a cassette copy. It has been said he detested bootleggers who pressed up his recordings onto vinyls or CDs to sell. To that end, he kept a log of all the trades he made with clear indications of what markings he did to the tapes. That way, he knew which of his trades were sent to bootleggers.
He worked as a custodian in a public school. In a fit of depression, he committed suicide in 1990. His friends say he destroyed all copies of his Led Zeppelin recordings. These are what are now being traded back and forth.
Millard was active from 1974 to the ‘80s and was said to have taped shows by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jethro Tull and even Kansas. To date, we have never found a copy of his Who or Tull recordings. The non-Zeppelin masters are known to be in possession of Millard’s family. Hopefully, someday they will be shared again.

Ry Cooder: Cotati 1984 (Soundboard) FLAC

CooderCotati front
August 4, 1984 (the day my wife and I married)
Cotati Cabaret, Cotati, CA
soundboard > high end desktop Sony cassette deck > master cassette (Maxell MX90 metal tape recorded with Dolby B on)

transfer: JVC KD-V6 (playback, with Dolby off) > Sek'd Prodif Plus soundcard > Sound Forge 8 (normalize, fade in and out, track splits) > BIAS Sound Soap > .wav files > FLAC level 8 encoding, align on sector boundaries

OU: I, Easy Ed, was at the show with my cassette deck connected to the soundboard - this is not a multigenerational cassette received in trade years ago. This is my master soundboard cassette. -Recorded by Easy Ed.

disc one
1. Little Sister
2. Smack Dab In The Middle
3. Go Home, Girl
4. Things Can't Talk
5. You Better Have Jesus
6. How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live?

2. Goin' To Brownsville
3. Alimony (unexplained gap of just over 1 second in this song)

5. Down In The Boondocks
6. Why Don't You Try Me?
7. The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)
8. Crazy 'Bout An Automobile

TRT 51:28

Ry Cooder - guitar, mandolin, vocals
Van Dyke Parks - keyboards
Jorge Calderon - bass
Jim Keltner - drums
Bobby King - tenor vocals
Willie Greene, Jr. - bass vocals

Since the original recording was made with Dolby B on, which adds 10dB boost to the high frequencies, yet the playback was done without Dolby B on (which would have cut the high frequencies by 10dB) I took the liberty of applying some very slight noise (hiss) reduction using BIAS Sound Soap. If anyone wants the recording without this processing please contact me and I'd be happy to oblige. I usually am against offering original recordings with any processing but I was very light-handed here.
The venue for this show was The Cotati Cabaret in Cotati, CA. It was a small club that held about 300 people. Cotati is a small town located about an hour north of San Francisco.
Cotati is next to Sonoma State University, which was called Granola State University back in the days. SSU is where the great 1973 recording of Old & In The Way with Ramblin' Jack Elliott opening was made (which I and many other people have). There is a great poster of the O&ITW show, my copy of which is long gone :<(

Sweet Dreams
When Jon Anderson, disenchanted with the new direction that Yes was taking, announced his departure from the band after the huge 1987-88 “Big Generator” tour, very few people knew what the man had in mind for the future of Yes music. The answer came less than a year later when an official announcement was made that Jon had joined forces with former Yes band members Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe to sign with Arista Records and form a new group named simply “Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe”. With the task of getting Yes music back on track again, ABWH set off to record their only studio album. Completed in the summer of 1989, this album recaptured the magic of the early Yes albums these four men created in the early seventies, and, once released, gained worldwide fan and critic acclaim.
Artist Roger Dean, whose ethereal art had graced so many Yes album covers in the seventies, was asked to provide some special cover artwork for the new album, as well as a new stage design for the forthcoming world tour.  Starting at Mud Island in Memphis, Tennessee on July 29th 1989, this tour took the band across North America, the U.K., Eastern Europe and Japan before ending back in the United States at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 5th 1990.  In the absence of traditional Yes bass player Chris Squire, ABWH was able to secure the talents of renowned bassist Tony Levin, a long time associate of Bill Bruford in King Crimson.  Levin’s extraordinary finesse and very personal style brought new life to the old Yes material played during the tour.
To enhance the live performance of both the old and new material, ABWH also brought in Julian Colbeck, who would join the Steve Hackett band in 1990, on keyboards, and Milton McDonald on guitar.  The set list for the new tour included about two thirds of the new album, as well as a few Yes classics from the early Bruford era.  Strangely enough, the ABWH tour would be the first time that Bill Bruford would perform, live, songs that he had helped to compose on the “Close To The Edge” album in 1972.  His departure from Yes shortly after recording the material prevented his participation in live performances at the time. With this group of unique and talented musicians playing both old and new material, ABWH concerts became incredible musical events.
The show we present here was recorded in front of 15,000 people at the Summit in Houston, Texas, on August 28th of 1989, and would be the last performance to include Tony Levin during this part of the tour.  Shortly after completing the final song of the evening, “Starship Trooper”, Tony walked off and collapsed back stage.  He was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with Hepatitis.  Four concerts had to be cancelled while the band quickly recruited American bass player Jeff Berlin to replace Levin until he could return.  Under the circumstances, and with only three days to absorb so many complex pieces of music, Jeff did a magnificent job.  The ABWH full-concert video, which was shot only a few days later in California, stands as undeniable proof of that fact. Tony Levin returned to his post for the first concert of the U.K. leg of the tour on October 20th.  Sadly, the ABWH project only lasted for this one tour and ended with the formation of the Yes / ABWH Union.  So here we present a very special concert in the history of a very special band.

Notes from the Re-Master:
This Houston show has been known for quite some time to be a high quality recording that suffered from high hiss levels and poor tonality. The first 2:30 of disc one originates from a different source than the majority of the rest of the show. The fidelity is clearly not the same. A few other small patches are also present but the remainder of the show, again, is of good quality.
Hiss was reduced using multiple methods. Treble and high treble ranges were quite excessive leading to piercing notes and excess “SSS” sounds during vocals. This was corrected. The sub-bass frequencies were also excessive at certain points and needed reduction. Many small pops were encountered that needed manual removal. -PRRP Staff

OU Notes: On December 12, 1977 in his final show of the year, Lightfoot made a triumphant appearance at Avery Fisher Hall in New York. It was a benefit concert for the Cerebral Palsy Association and was sponsored and eventually aired by WNEW radio in New York. Lightfoot was given the following introduction by a representative from WNEW prior to taking the stage: "If you ever listen at all to us, you know we love him. Because he sings, and he says it and he writes it. We hope you love him, too. Our friend from Canada - Gordon Lightfoot!" The audience erupts in applause. Then it audibly increases as Lightfoot takes centre stage. It continues for a long time until the band can finally launch into Summertime Dream. Throughout this show the crowd is totally engaged and Lightfoot has them in the palm of his hand. He and the band are incredible! His voice is outstanding! Lightfoot at one point mentions the "little gals" who were out doing Christmas carols before he came on, and how he thought they did so well. The overall ambience of the concert, the Christmas season, and the crowd's obvious and deep affection for Lightfoot, make this the best concert I've heard from this period - much better than the '76 Montreux show that has been circulated. Anyone fortunate enough to have heard and taped this radio broadcast for posterity, have a gem on their hands. The mix is very professional (again, the Montreux show pales in comparison) and with Endless Wire just a month from release, numerous songs are debuted from it - including a spellbinding, If Children Had Wings! And...The Last Time I Saw Her! A word for word, perfect version! All in all an incredible documentation of Lightfoot and where he was at musically in late 1977.
This is the best sounding, most complete with the songs in the correct order, version of this show that I know of. Not only is it an incredible performance, but Gordon Lightfoot and his band play a few songs that can be considered rarities, as they can't be found on any other soundboard recordings from this era. Absolutely superb!

OU NOTE: ZZ Top was the headline act this night during Sunfest, a festial featuring multiple acts on at least three stages. It takes place next to the intracoastal waterway and is outdoors. There was a fair amount of wind, but I was using some very effect

ive windscreens. I was about three quarters of the way back between the stage and soundboard a bit off to the right. This is not the raw recording. The raw recording had too much bass. I used a high pass filter with 96 Hz as the cutoff frequency and 12 dB per octave rolloff. I then amplified the recording. Listen to the sample and PLEASE let me know what you think. I am by no means an expert on mastering.

Tim Chandler - bass

There is limited information available on this concert at danielamos.com. The 1982 timeline page (http://www.danielamos.com/timeline82.html) mentions this concert with the following excerpt: At one point during the show, someone yells out "Happily Married Man", to which Terry replies "We don't do that - that's a different band." Not too much time passes until another audience member yells out an unrecognizable country request and Terry answers by saying "We burned those hats a long time ago..." This exchange occurs on track 2 of disc 2, confirming that this is in fact the 1982 Edina concert, and not the official release "Live Bootleg '82," which comes from the April 30th show in St. Louis.
Terry does a lot of talking in this concert, but he covers some interesting ground: some personal stories, backwards masking, the Christian new wave dancing scene in California (with a mention of the bands Lifesavors and Undercover), and frustrations with Christian radio.

Led Zeppelin: Inglewood 1970 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

arguably the best version + known lineage!
berry_f
*BLOWS AWAY ANY PREVIOUS VERSION*
Led Zeppelin Live at the Inglewood Forum 1970-09-04 from 2nd gen AUD reel-to-reel tape with known lineage(rec3)- "A Sweeter Blueberry" 16 bit CD-Burnable Version
Even if you never had a bootleg by Led Zeppelin, you need this one. This recording is to Led Zeppelin what "The Coming Of Kahoutek" is to Pink Floyd collectors, or what "Live'r Than You'll Ever Be" is to The Rolling Stones. It was your very first bootleg of this group. It's an exciting, relaxed performance by the band as well. They even comment on the fact that they are enjoying themselves.
What sets the Led Zeppelin performance apart from the others is the fact that there were so many recorders in the audience that night. Did you know there were five known different tapes of this show (and this is arguably the best one)?
Determining which, if any of the existing tapes this one is has proven to be quite a journey. I am absolutely indebted to Dime member Acapulcogold for help and guidance. To the person enquiring which version of this show was the best, may I hold my hand up?
This show has been confirmed to be from the "AltTMOQ" source as put out by Empress Valley, but in much better quality. Finally, after groups of sample comparisons, it was matched to audience comments during "Whole Lotta Love". There is a vast reduction in hiss and great improvement in tonal quality over the EVSD release.
This is the red book compatible CD-burnable version

Setlist (runtime 1hr49mins18sec):
CD1
Immigrant Song
Heartbreaker
Dazed And Confused
Bring It On Home
That's The Way

Lineage MR reel to reel ->reel ->reel ->Sound Forge 6.0 24 bit 48KHz ->Downsampling to 16 bit 44.1Khz Track splitup ->Flac via Flac Frontend, level 6, sectors aligned and verified.
Enjoy!

The tape originated from Bell Sound Studios in New York City and was given by Hilary Gerrard from the Apple Office on 54 St. James's Street in London to WNEW-FM in New York City as an advanced promo for Badfinger's next LP. It appears that the tape was never played.
On March 2, 1971 a rough mix of the entire proposed new LP was prepared in England, then Badfinger travelled to the U.S. for their 2nd tour. This tape contains the mixes that were intended for side 2 of the original Straight Up album, except that Mike's song "Loving You" is missing and a slightly different mix of "Perfection" is included instead. The alternate mix of "Perfection" fades out earlier and the synthesizer is dropped from the mix earlier and the harmonica overdub is brought in sooner than on the final mix.
It wasn't until 9 months later that the final Straight Up LP would be released in the U.S.A. 4 of these songs were released in 1993 as bonus tracks on the "Straight Up" CD release.

Pink Floyd: London 1969 (DVD Audio RIP)

34341
Royal Festival Hall, London, England
14 April 1969
Royal Festival Hall Rehearsals
HRV DVD 008 Rev. A
DVD Audio rip

note: I do not intend to post the video unless there are significant requests

Lineage: Original 16mm Film > Submaster > DVDR(0) > DVDR(x) > DVD video files > DVD Audio Extractor > wav@16/48 > *flac@16/48
* Tracked with CD Wave, encoded to flac 8 with Flac Frontend, tagged and verified
16/44.1 flacs included in separate folder, downsampled with Adobe Audition 3.0.1, pre-post filltering set to high

To achieve a better flow for the benefit of the enjoyment of the rehearsals and the discussions between I deleted a few spots of silent footage which you can admire on the original DVD if you like but would be out of place on this audio rip:
- 15 secs of silence (screen credits) at the start
- 1 min 10 secs silent footage from stalls between Drum Instrumental and Organ Music
- 13 secs of silence at the end

Resulting track list:
1. Afternoon (Biding My Time) / Discussion / "Wild Tape" (4:20)
2. The Beginning (Green Is The Colour) / Beset By Creatures Of The Deep / Discussion (2:29)
3. Discussion / Nightmare (Cymbaline) / Discussion (3:33)
4. Drum Instrumental (Ummagumma) (0:37)
5. Organ Music Take 1 - A Saucerful Of Secrets (End Part) / Organ Music (3:20)
6. More Organ / Instrumental (5:50)
7. Chucking Out Time (Anthony Stern getting busted) (3:08)
(All songs are fragmentary)
Total time: 23:21

Apart from this unusual and fascinating chance at hearing the Floyd rehearse at this early point of their career, the discussions (well, discussions... it's mostly Roger making observations) between rehearsals and at the end (where Anthony Stern is asked to leave) alone are worth the price of admission in my opinion.

Original notes from HRV DVD 008 Rev. A (with thanks to RonToon and the Harvested team):
This is about 20 mins of b/w footage shot at the Royal Festival Hall by Anthony Stern (it sez so right there on the opening slate). It seems that Stern was called earlier that day by the band to shoot this amazing and unique performance. Unfortunately, he didn't go through all the proper channels, and only got permission from the RFH to shoot the rehearsals and only in certain areas of the venue. This becomes apparent when the venue's security "busts" him and orders him to turn over all of his equipment. This all takes place while the camera is still rolling, but with audio only! You can hear the escalating dialogue between Anthony and security/management as he pleads his case. Too bad he didn't go through the proper channels and pay for the rights to film the actual show, as he was evidently prepared to do, but at least we have this incredible rehearsal footage to marvel at. That's the story as Stern has pretty much confirmed.
It seems that the last bit (Rick playing the final part of ASoS of the huge house pipe organ) was outta synch, but I was able to fix that properly. Other songs include Biding My Time (with Rick briefly on trombone), Green is the Color, Cymbaline, and ASoS... all incomplete but still wonderful to watch!
This Rev.A is a substantial upgrade from the original release. The picture is much less washed out and the contrast is a lot better (the blacks ar darker) w/o any video enhancement.
This time around I can take an educated stab at the gen:
The original 16mm film was transferred at a professional studio. I'm not sure what tape stock it was transferred to, but there is a good chance that a DVD was made at the same time. I can only assume that a clone of that DVD was passed on (if it was done properly, it should be the same, but I can't know that for sure). I then received a perfect clone of that DVD which I converted to an NTSC MPEG-2 stream (CBR 8) and a
PCM stream. My previous release came from an unknown PAL VHS source.
Enjoy!
