Cream: London 1967 (Aud Remaster) FLAC

2
A fairly rare recording.
May 23rd 1967 Live at The Marquee Club, Wardour Street, London
Lineage: Master>?>Silver>EAC(Secure Offset Corrected>REMASTERING>CDWave>TLH>Flac8
Notes from post:
Just received a silver through the post of this and after listening to it decided to try and make it sound a bit warmer and give it a little more definition. As luck would have it the source hadn't been mutilated and was quite easy to work with, on the whole I'm pleased with the results(YMMV).
But please remember this is a 1967 Audience recording and is never going to sound much compared to more modern AUD's still the guitar tends to grab the attention now and be a bit more up front and urgent, though sadly the vocals are still pretty buried due to the original P.A and the equipment used.

Steely Dan: Rainbow Theatre 1974 (Soundboard) FLAC

sd1974-05-20-front cover

Live at the Rainbow, London, England, May 20, 1974. [no label 2CD]

With just two albums to their name, Steely Dan arrived in London to promote their third, Pretzel Logic. Now… what is that? A pretzel is a salty biscuit, twisted into a curious knot with three "holes". The bread stick is likely of German origin and some claim that its origins have a Christian history. Is that the "pretzel logic" of Steely Dan? That the unique pretzel shape with three holes or rings represents third time "lucky" for the band? A holy trinity of albums? If yes, the single Rikki Don’t Lose That Number from Pretzel Logic brought them their international hit.

The Dan are with the classic lineup of Jeff Baxter, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder and even Michael McDonald on piano. The melodic songs from Can’t Buy A Thrill and Countdown To Ecstasy are played for all their worth. It’s unknown why this show in London was recorded. This source is from a tape of the soundboard recording. It shows its age, the drums are poorly miked, but thankfully Donald Fagen’s voice is nicely centered and you can hear all the guitars and keyboard parts.

After the flood of jazz-rock bands, it was really cool to listen to Steely Dan’s piano-centered jazz-rock with not a tooting horn in sight. Taking the opening bars from Horace Silver’s Song For My Father, Becker and Fagen create the fantastic pop hit Rikki Don’t Lose That Number. Silver was not amused and demanded they remove it. None of the current CD releases with this song retains that special piano intro. Luckily it survives on this live recording. The Dan have never released a live recording from this era. They were not circus showmen.

It’s a real kick to finally hear the Dan in their younger days play such great tunes as The Boston Rag, Do It Again, Brooklyn and King Of The World.
The band:
Donald Fagen - piano, vocals
Walter Becker - bass
Jeff Baxter - guitar
Denny Dias - guitar
Jim Hodder - drums
Jeff Porcaro - drums
Royce Jones - percussion, vocals
Michael McDonald - electric piano, vocals

2007-07-07 Live Earth New Jersey - Roger Waters-Channel N24
Roger Waters, primary songwriter and vocalist for the legendary rock group Pink Floyd, took the stage with a group of fresh-faced kids from Trenton, New Jersey sporting "Together We Stand" t-shirts. With a massive inflated pig floating overhead with the slogan "Save Our Sausages," he delivered the pop-rock classic "Another Brick in the Wall" with a massive grin on his face. Seeing Roger Waters smile and the performance poking some fun at the seriousness of Pink Floyd's music and the event itself ("Save Our Sausages" was a play on the S.O.S. "Save Our Selves" slogan for Live Earth) was a great moment not to be missed.

Bob Dylan: Now's the Time for Your Tears 1965 (Ex Soundboard) FLAC

front
Label: Wanted Man Music
made in Germany 1995
silver cd>freerip2.945>flac front end
source: Free Trade Hall, Manchester '65
This is a near perfect soundboard recording -- The show is amazing and deserves a place in even the smallest Dylan collection.
As the original recording was obviously analog, there is slight tape hiss evident in the high-end. To some ears, this hiss is an undesirable noise. These are the same folks who argue the benefits of digital recording over analog. This problem was eliminated five years earlier on the Swingin' Pig release: 'Now Ain't the Time for Your Tears'.
There are very few better bootlegs available then this one. This could easily be a commercial release. The CD provides the complete concert with the exception of the opening lines of Talkin' World War III Blues (8). This is one of the last recordings of a purely acoustic live Bob Dylan concert...'
Believe me, you haven't heard Bob Dylan if you haven't got much experience of his pre-electric 1965 shows.
He sometimes sounds like a totally different artist on some of the tracks.

lineage: silver > eac secure > wav > flac8
liner notes:
"Do It Again", "FM", "Bodhisattva" are only a few of the very intriguing songs that the duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan have given us through the years. After a several year absence, in 1996 they hit the road on another great tour. This time with a crackerjack band that featured fusion wunderkind Wayne Krantz, they proceeded to amaze aundiences in arenas all over the US. For those unfortunate ones who couldn't make it to one of the gigs, this document we now present to you is a fitting consolation prize. For those fortunate ones who were there, sitting and relieve the memories of one of those fabulous nights, as I am doing right now."
The guy who wrote that might not have English as his "first language", but you get the idea.. Here you get to hear, among other things, Donald Fagan call a "technical" foul on Wayne Krantz. Some cool/interesting studio banter, and impeccable sound. Enjoy.

Peter Green - guitar, vocals
John McVie - bass
Mick Fleetwood - drums
Jeremy Spencer - guitar, vocals
Paul Butterfield - harp (where noted)

There are minor channel fluctuations in a few spots but this mostly sounds spectacular with a very 60's sounding mix (vocals in one channel and guitars in the other). To be able to hear Paul Butterfield with Fleetwood Mac is a highlight but Peter Green sounds really great too!
From Peter Green's stage comments, this is from one week into Fleetwood Mac's first U.S. tour and he sounds like he's having a really good time on the last night of a 3 show run with Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. This is presumed to be the last night because Peter Green makes a comment about how they'll be back in 2 weeks (not the following night). I think that they returned to the Carousel on the 22nd or 23rd of June.
A Dime member offered to create some cover art and it contains some rare cover photos that came from another Dime member so thanks to both of them and to the original source for this terrific recording!
I should mention that the poster for this concert was one of the strangest designs ever. It was a rendition of some medals that was supposed to be cut out and worn. I guess you'd have to see it to understand the concept...

From Fat Old Sun:
background info:
How would I describe the floyd era of January and Febuary of 1970? My description would be one comprising of confusion, continuity, experimentation, originality but, most of all, creative. The band had finished a not so busy tour
of the UK and Europe with "The Man and The Journey", and it seemed they wanted to continue with those songs whilst performing some new creations written over the Christmas period of late 1969 and very early 1970.
This is the last audio document of the band playing "The Man and The Journey" sets, but its hard to say if the whole two sets were played due to all the different sources being incomplete, yet. Celestial Voices has just surfaced which was
usually at the end of the second set. It seems to segue straight into "Green Is The Color", so i'm not actually sure if they closed set 1 with "Celestial Voices" or they did in fact play the whole "The Man and The Journey" suite. That is
why I put "Celestial Voices" at the end of the first set.
The Floyd augmented the "The Man and The Journey" suite with some very new material. "Main Theme" was composed for the film "More" in 1969 but was only ever played once before being only five days prior (as far as we know). There are only
three documented performances of the "Main Theme" being the 18th and 23rd of Jan, and the 11th of Feb making this a rarity just for that. And making only its second appearance was "The Amazing Pudding" (aka Atom Heart Mother) which was still untitled even as far as the 28th of Febuary when Roger introduced it as being "as yet untitled".
recording info:
This is the most complete version of this date at present. All versions don't surpass an hour, yet this is an hour and twenty-seven minutes long. I came across a really nice version of the already mass circulated "source one" with a completely different transfer. It sounded a little clearer than the recently released roio "Mothered Man (LPP)" which i used as much as possible. "Source two", which only surfaced just recently, had some audio that was missing from source one including about twenty seconds more of the intro for Daybreak. It also brought to light "Celestial Voices" and "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" which until recently had not been heard at all from this date.
Source two was riddled with a "whistling" sound throughout most of the songs which really annoyed me so I only used the source when needed to fill gaps or present the newly surfaced songs. The "whistling" is documented in the .txt file of source two.
Going back to the addition and positioning of "Celestial Voices", on source two, it seems "Celestial Voices" goes straight into "Green Is The Color" which confused me somewhat. Maybe the band were doing different things with the "Man and The
Journey" set list because "The Violent Sequence" directly follows "Careful With That Axe, Eugene", which it never used to do. So thats why i took the chance that the band actually played "Celestial Voices" at the end of "The Man".
I don't think anyone really knows what exactly was the set list for the night so what i've done is I've presented "The Man and The Journey" upfront and followed it by the other songs which have nothing to do with the suite. But as I said, I don't think anyone really knows the setlist and i'm definitely not implying that this was HOW it was played that night.
I'm trying to make sense out of all the material i had.
One more thing, both sources were speed corrected. I didn't spend hours correcting them but both sources were occasionally running so fast that they were two semi-tones too high. I brought them both back down to a much normal speed. During
"Afternoon" (Biding My Time) and "Green Is The Color" I actually fade from one source to the other, and they sound exactly the same pitch wise so they ended up being as close as you get to the same speed.
conclusion:
The recording is still a digusting roio to listen to and only hardcore roio-er's will be able to listen to it the whole way through without an earache lol, but this is a much better sounding roio than anything i've heard from this date, but
in saying that, its not a massive upgrade by any means but it is definitely THE longest version. The rarity factor of this roio is very high due to the rare performances of some of the songs, if you don't have anything from this date YOU NEED
THIS! lol.

The original .txt files from the sources used are included.

Notes from taper/uploader:
I'm pretty proud of this one! I'd have to rank it somewhere in my top ten shows that I have personally recorded, both for personal enjoyment and sound quality, but you can be the judge of that yourself. This show was delayed by a day - it was supposed to be on October 1, but something held it up by a day. It was the first show of ZZ Top's tour in support of the yet to be released (at this point) album called "Recycler". I think the band was rehearsing for the tour in Vancouver and wanted an extra day to get it all right. Anyway, I had floor tickets (open floorplan) so I could roam around and find that sweet spot. I stood dead center of the Pacific Coliseum, right at where center ice would be, directly below the overhead scoreboard. This spot put me about 2/3 back from the stage and 1/3 in front of the soundboard. The live sound was almost perfect to my ears' memory. The PA was in stereo, and a couple of songs played up the stereo effect. You can definitely hear the panning guitars on the seldom played "Future Blues" come through in the tape. Being in the crowd, there are some audience moments, but nothing too distacting. Go ahead and turn it on, crank it up, and just pretend you're there.

The rig I taped with didn't capture low bass very well. This means the tape is very bright and kind of brash to listen to "flat". I played the tapes in flat after modifying the springpads under the tape to maximize tape-to-head contact and of course re-aligning the playback heads azimuth. The results were good, but almost painful to listen to. So bright and sharp, with bass that left a little to be desired. The unmodified files will not be made available! I used Wavelab to fix a couple level changes early in the show and correct an overall imbalance. I used a few choice plug-ins to slightly widen the stereo field, EQ to boost bass and fix a few other spikes, a multi-band compressor to minimize harsh screams and to smooth out the high peaks that Dolby encoding recorded to tape, and a peak limiter to stop sounds louder than -.01dB. I tried to master this with levels that would be strong but still leave plenty of headroom. Damn the loudness war in mastering! The results are a fully listenabe and enjoyable recording, properly Re-Mastered, that sounds like my memory of actually standing direcly under my microphone. Who says you need a digital recorder to sound clear? Put some headphones on and you're literally in my headspace that night.

I remember being blown away by Frank Beard's drumming during the show. For all the stuff about click tracks and drum machines you hear from the critics of that sound, the man can play! Most of the drum sounds were at least being triggered live by him, and most of his kit(s) were real drums, not electronics. There was a Bart Simpson doll mounted in the front of his main kit, and if I remember right, there was some kind of foot pedal hooked up that made Bart dance and shake on command. Billy and Dusty are also in fine form in this show. The band is very happy to be on stage again, and taking their time to still work out the kinks in the staging of the show between songs. I was also thrilled to be seeing them for my third time, but first time with a recording walkman in my pocket!

No need for fixing SBEs (all wav files are already sector-aligned).
