Christmas in July

All-I-Want-For-Christmas-Is

Hi Friends,

My work computer had been in the shop for almost a week so I have not been as active on the blog as I normally am. No, I don't use work time for this but I do spend breaks and lunches on the blog (keeps me skinny, well skinnier, um, well at least I am not too bad off...).

I would love to hear from you some artists or groups that you haven't seen here or haven't seen enough of here. A Tony Bennett post is coming soon so don't request him ;)

Let me know what I can do to help to make you happy because I do appreciate all that you do for me too.

Dave

Metropole Orkest: The Music of Robert Fripp 2011 (FM) FLAC

381
Metropole Orkest.
28 juni 20.30 uur Paradiso
Holland Festival

The Music of Robert Fripp
Paradiso, Amsterdam (NL)

Guitarist and composer Robert Fripp founded the band King Crimson - which epitomises British progressive rock. As a soloist, Fripp was best known for his Soundscapes, an improvisation technique in which he used a variety of electronics to evoke a cathedral of sound on his own. Fripp is regarded as a pioneer in rock music and an innovator in the use of the electric guitar.
The Metropole Orchestra performs arrangements made by the British composer Andrew Keeling of Fripp's music. Several of these arrangements have been made by Keeling especially for the Holland Festival. Among the adaptations are three titles by King Crimson. Along with Bert Lams (California Guitar Trio), Keeling managed to adapt several Soundscapes so they could be performed by a complete orchestra.

The Sinceros: Various 1979-80 Soundboards (FLAC)

Now Wave Side One
Palladium, NYC - December 1979
Hammersmith Odeon, London 1980
Goldsmith College, UK (?) 1980

Lineage: CDR from trade => EAC => FLAC frontend (level 8)
OU Notes: A very good to excellent sounding shows, and all apparently from soundboard. Some tape hiss present.
The Palladium show has circulated in an abbreviated version previously on Dime. Exact date uncertain, but I believe it was December 13, 1979
Hammersmith show apparently from early 1980. Although "Disappearing" had evolved somewhat from the Palladium show, it was still in the version that appeared on the never-released "2nd Debut" which was slated for 1980 release before being quashed by Epic records. It would evolve further into the "Pet Rock" version released in 1981.
Goldsmith College added as a bonus. Since there was plenty of duplication in their setlists, I thought to add the unique songs as a bonus rather than the entire set. Both of these songs were to appear on "2nd Debut", but "Come On Out and Play" was never released, whereas "As The World Turns" would later show up on "Pet Rock" in pretty much the same version. Quite a surprise, since the audience reaction to it was extreme ennui!

Palladium setlist:
01. Something's Happening Now
02. I Still Miss You
03. Quick Quick Slow
04. Count The Beating Hearts
05. Disappearing
06. Little White Lie
07. Good Luck (to You)

Hammersmith setlist:

17. I Can't Stop
18. Little White Lie

20. Take Me To Your Leader
21. Worlds Apart

Limp Bizkit: Sacramento 1999 (FM) FLAC

High Voltage Radio
Family Values Tour
Arco Arena - Sacramento CA - November 20, 1999

FM Broadcast > Cassette Tape > CDR > EAC > GoldWave v.5.04 > TLH flaclevel 8

OU: My receiver is a Sony ST-JX661 Quartz Lock Digital Synthesizer AM/FM Stero Tuner, run thru a Sony TA-AV561 AV Control Integrated Amplifier. The recording was made on a Sony TC-WR661 Cassette Deck to a TDK D90 Type1 cassette. Playback was on said system and recorded to a Maxell CD-R Music-Pro using a Sony RCD-W500C Compact Disc Recorder, using the Super Bit Mapping funtion. The resulting CDR was ripped using Exact Audio Copy (secured). Track edits and fades where needed were made with Goldwave v.5.04. The waves were encoded to flac level 8 using Traders Little Helper aligning all sector boundaries.
I removed all the commercials and voice overs, except for the intro and outro voice overs and the one between tracks 9 & 10 which set the visual scene of Durst getting girls from the audience to dance on stage. The High Voltage Host says that the recording was made at the Arco Arena in Sacramento (CA) during the Family Values Tour, and Durst mentions Sac quite often. The date of November 20, 1999 was found on the net. Every time Durst swears it sound like a DJ scratching a record, worth mentioning but not annoying enough to take away from the enjoyment of the music. DO NOT SELL!! SHARE FREELY!!

Excellent sounding FM broadcast of The The's show at St. Georges Hall, Bradford. I've edited out DJ comments at the very start and end, but they're there if you want them - Track 00 segues with Track 01, and there are two versions of Track 06, one unedited with the DJ, the other with the DJ cut and the applause faded out (unnoticeable, as the was plenty of applause before the DJ spoke). I'm told the previous version on Dime had a couple of dropouts and some static blasts, but this one is clean all the way through.

INFO from http://www.sarahmcquaid.com/bio.html: Renowned for her warm, engaging stage presence, Sarah McQuaid is a versatile and beguiling performer. In addition to her own elegantly crafted originals, she interprets traditional Irish and Appalachian folk songs, Elizabethan ballads, 1930s jazz numbers, surprise covers and lively guitar instrumentals with panache and poignance.
Her deliciously earthy voice delivers a powerful emotional punch that’s matched by her distinctive, eloquent guitar style. Add this to a real rapport with her audience, and you have all the ingredients of a great night out.
Born in Spain, raised in Chicago and holding dual Irish and American citizenship, Sarah spent 13 years in Ireland and now lives near Penzance, Cornwall, in the southwest of England.
As might be expected of one who has led such a peripatetic existence, Sarah developed a taste for the road early on: From the age of twelve she was embarking on tours of the US and Canada with the Chicago Children’s Choir. At eighteen she went to France for a year to study philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, where her performance at a local folk club drew a rave review in the Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace, saluting the “superbe chanteuse d’outre-Atlantique qui fit passer comme une vibration émotionnelle dans une salle conquise” (superb singer from across the Atlantic who caused an emotional vibration to pass through a conquered hall)!
In 1994, Sarah moved to Ireland, where she became a weekly folk music columnist for the Evening Herald and a contributor to Hot Press magazine. She is also the author of The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book, described by The Irish Times as “a godsend to aspiring traditional guitarists,” and has presented workshops on the DADGAD tuning at festivals and venues around the globe.
Her debut solo album, When Two Lovers Meet, featured traditional tunes and songs along with one original number. “Sarah’s voice is both as warm as a turf fire and as rich as matured cognac.... An astonishing debut by a unique talent,” wrote the Rough Guide To Irish Music. Despite the critical acclaim, a long break from the music scene followed, during which Sarah married Feargal Shiels and had two children, Eli and Lily Jane.
When Two Lovers Meet was re-released in Ireland and the UK in 2007, a year that also saw Sarah touring as a solo artist for the first time. Tracks from the album were included in FolkCast’s “artists of the year” podcast and in Crooked Road host Mike Ganley’s Top Ten picks for the year.
The move to the other side of the Irish Sea was triggered by the death in 2004 of her mother, in whose former home she now lives and to whom her second album, 2008’s I Won’t Go Home ’Til Morning, was dedicated. Says Sarah: “My first album was immersed in Irish traditional music, which I still love – but this time round, I felt the need to revisit the Southern Appalachian songs and tunes that I learned during my childhood. All the songs on this recording have powerful emotional resonances for me, and all are connected in one way or another to my mother. Looking back, I guess it was kind of a cathartic process.”
Like its predecessor, I Won’t Go Home ’Til Morning was recorded in Trevor Hutchinson’s Dublin studio and produced by Gerry O’Beirne. Both also guest on the album, alongside percussionist Liam Bradley, Máire Breatnach on fiddle and viola and Rosie Shipley on fiddle.
Crow Coyote Buffalo, an album of songs co-written by Sarah with fellow Penzance resident Zoë (author and performer of 1991 hit single ‘Sunshine On A Rainy Day’) under the band name Mama, has also been garnering rave reviews since its January 2009 release; one critic described the pair as “Two pagan goddesses channelling the ghost of Jim Morrison”. (For more on Mama, see www.mamamusic.co.uk).
In February 2010, Sarah re-released the first two albums in a double-disc package for the North American market, to coincide with her appearances at the Folk Alliance conference in Memphis and her first US tour, which immediately followed the conference. The double CD became the No. 1 album, and Sarah the No. 1 artist, on the folkradio.org chart for February 2010 (http://folkradio.org/airplay/feb10.html). Taking in 20 concerts in 23 days, including Boston’s Club Passim, upstate New York’s Old Songs and Nashville’s Bluebird Café, the tour was a great success, generating several immediate return bookings for subsequent tours in 2010 and 2011.
Now busy with upcoming tours and concerts in Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA, Sarah is currently assembling material for her third solo album, provisionally titled The Plum Tree And The Rose, once again with Gerry O’Beirne producing and Trevor Hutchinson engineering. Sarah is also slowly but surely working on a novel for which she’s received two Irish Arts Council Bursaries in Literature. She hopes to finish it one of these days.

PJ Harvey: Holland 1992 (Soundboard) FLAC

PJ_Harvey-Build_Me_A_Woman-Frontal
Label: Kiss The Stone (Catalog#: KTS 186)
Format: Silver CD, Unofficial Release
Country: Italy
Released: 1993
Three late 1992 concerts are presented here. The first is PJ Harvey's set at the 1992 Reading Festival, which is an excellent soundboard recording. The second two are from consecutive dates in The Netherlands. The first of these, at Tivoli in Utrecht on 1 November, has excellent sound, while the sound, Effenaar, Eindhoven on 2 November, is not as good - it is also a soundboard recording, but there is a variable whooshing sound in the treble.

Taper's Notes: Well, a few days before seeing the 2011 opening night show from the front row I had a decision to make, do I make the trip up for the Chicago show.... after the 2nd show in Chicago last year was postponed and I was not able to make it for the make up date, I finally decided it was worth the chance, especially since it was inside at a proper venue and hopefully the crowd was a bit better than last year at the horrible outdoor thing they choose to call a venue.
It all paid off bigtime, no problems in getting up to Chicago from FL, great weather, and of course the great hospitality of SiriusJoe!! After arriving at the venue and a very short trip to get inside I made the trek to find where my seat was, I knew what row I was in, but not until I got to the row did I realize I was on the outer aisle and that made all the difference in the world! The crowd was pretty well behaved around me and having the ability to slightly adjust to things with no-one crammed around me is always a good thing :)
The boys put on a great show, the place was pretty packed and they definitely fed off of that. The sound was great where I was and the mix was overall very nice. It made for some great versions of many songs and they were enjoying themselves very much, Geddy seemed very into it and was going off on the bass quite bit. Alex was very outgoing as well and simply shredded during Working Man with Geddy right next to him doing the same. Neil was great as well of course ;) This is what a concert in Chicago should be all about!!!!
Special thanks to cameraeye_34 for the use of the photos for the artwork! And of course, a very, very special thanks to SiriusJoe and his family for the awesome hospitality and making it all a great time and also to SiriusJoe for mastering this puppy!!!

Release Notes: As always, feel free to share this anywhere you'd like, MP3 is fine for personal use, but please don't distribute in that format. Please do not
alter/remaster/matrix this release. A great deal of effort went into capturing and producing this recording, and we would prefer it to remain as we have presented it. Your cooperation will encourage many more releases in the future. ;)
Thanks & enjoy the show!

Lineage: WAAF 107.3 FM (Worcester) radio recorded broadcast > Sansui 8 receiver with wire antenna > unknown cassette deck (Dolby off) > Maxell XLI 90 min. master cassette (normal bias) > played on Nak, 300 into Soundforge (wav) > flac (sb's aligned)
a this and that production. Do not sell this recording. Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly.

OU comments: this was apparently an early preview of "swing to the right" (from 1982) because it apparently doesn't include anything from 1980's "deface the music" and has a few from "adventures in utopia" this show was recorded and broadcasted in 1981. the 3 abrupt cuts are due to a quick return from a commercial break, each is only missing a couple of seconds. other than that, this is the full broadcast. the cassette recorder used for this was not a very good one. the cassette had only been played a couple of times before digitizing. Todd saw the light. now you can hear Todd seeing the light.

Pink Floyd: Cincinnati 1971 (VG/VG+ Aud) FLAC

highest rated at pf-db
33206039
Taft Auditorium, Cincinnati
20 November 1971
Two Audience Recordings:
--Recorder 1: cass[M] > cdr(?) > shn > wav > Adobe Audition 1.5 (minor
editing) > cd wav (tracking) > TLH > flac
--Recorder 2: cass[1]>DAT[2]>CDR[?] >EAC>WAV>archived in shn
--“DYI Patch Kit” (taken directly from the same torrent for Recorder 2”
Special thanks to:
--buffalofloyd for Recorder 1
--ravingandrooling for Recorder 2
--ddyte for the “DYI Patch Kit”, which I used for the last part of the show, taking advantage of the work that was already done there

OU: I put this version of this show together for my own edification, but figured some people might want to hear it as well, so here it is. FWIW, I received good feedback on a couple similar PF efforts, namely Hollywood Bowl ’72 (later dubbed “Platinum Crackers”) and Chicago ’77.
What I have here is the superior audience source (Recorder 1) patched with the second recording (Recorder 2) in places where Recorder 1 had cuts – that is, except for the brief places when both tapers shut off their equipment, mostly between songs. Keep in mind that this is not merely Recorder 1 with the "DYI Patch Kit" at the end, but also with a couple of other patches/blends from Recorder 2 earlier in the show (see below) and some other processing. Specifically, here’s the work I did:
--Meticulously speed-corrected both sources – Recorder 2 was waaay slow, FYI
--**Removed a bit of hiss from both sources – those who are against this practice, beware. There was too much hiss for my taste and that’s why I decided to make this adjustment, but I know there are many who prefer this not be done. Nevertheless, I encourage you to check out the samples in the torrent (all under 20 seconds) before you judge. I think it’s a considerable improvement, but that’s just me.
--Blended in roughly 40 seconds of Recorder 2 just after the end of Embryo to compensate for a cut – Recorder 2 was wobbly at this point, making this a serious challenge
--Blended in Recorder 2 for a 5-10 second cut in CWTAE
--Blended in Recorder 2 from “DYI Patch Kit” at 15:14 of Echoes (where Recorder 1 ends) through the end of the show

The only music that both recorders missed are a few seconds at start of CWTAE and a few seconds at 24:30 of Echoes; both were also turned off between songs for the most part, but not much seems to have been missed. No artwork, but please feel free to create and post your own.

DISC 1 (76:38)
1. The Embryo (28:54)
2. Fat Old Sun (12:56)
3. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (15:18)
4. Atom Heart Mother (19:29)

DISC 2 (60:47)
1. Careful With That Axe, Eugene (14:21)
2. Cymbaline (11:59)
3. Echoes (26:57)
4. Blues (7:30)

Also included:
Sample – CWTAE source blend
Sample – Echoes source blend
Sample – Fat Old Sun

David Bowie: Madison 1974(Soundboard?) FLAC

136417
University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, USA.
10 October 1974
Very good quality, mixing desk? recording - I uploaded this quite a while ago and am just now posting it - the OU says that it may be a soundboard.

CD-r (of "1974" CD set) > Audacity > CD Wave > TLH > FLAC

01 Intro - Memory Of A Free Festival
02 Rebel Rebel
03 John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)
04 Sorrow
05 Changes
06 1984
07 Moonage Daydream
08 When You Rock'n'roll With Me
09 Love Me Do-The Jean Genie
10 Diamond Dogs
11 Young Americans
12 Can You Hear Me
13 It's Gonna Be Me
14 Somebody Up There Likes Me
15 Suffragette City
16 Rock'n'roll Suicide

"Good evening Madison, it's a pleasure and privilege to play here. Thank you for having me."
Bowie clearly enjoys playing here, and the response he gets, hence the above accolade during When You Rock n Roll With Me.
Like with the recent New York 73 gig, this is a minor re-work...indeed less has been done here, simply a little widening of the sound. It involves double the signal in Audacity and widening the picture. The original is out there for those who prefer 'untouched' recordings, but this sounds better to my ears, and very good in headphones.
"This song is for girls...[ ] ...I don't write many love songs", he annouces as Can You Hear Me starts.
The gig ends with Bowie announcing before playing Rock N Roll Suicide -
"It's the first time that I've been here, and I'm coming back! You're so sweet
Time takes a cigarette..."
Towards the end of the song he adds - "oh I love you...[ ] you're wonderful, I bless you, I love you, thank you. I'll see you again soon, I mean it!".
Beautiful....and the audience are ecstatic. Puts paid to some of the accusations of him being cold and detached!
It's a very good quality recording, so enjoy!
Thanks to all involved in the recording and sharing of this recording, in particular David Bowie and his band...

Mike Garson (piano, mellotron), Carlos Alomar (guitar), Earl Slick (lead guitar), Emir Ksasan (bass guitar), Dennis Davis (drums), Pablo Rosario (percussion), David Sanborn (alto sax, flute), Richard Grando (baritone sax flute), Michael Kamen (electric piano, moog, oboe), Geoff McCormack, Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, Jean Fineberg, Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler and Luther Vandross (backing vocals).

Cass(1)>WAV(24-bit/48kHz)>FLAC
This radio programme is best known for rebroadcasting Work from the RTL radio recording of Théâtre des Champs Elysées, 8e, Paris, France, 23 January 1970. Often overlooked, however, is the fact that it additionally features concert excerpts from 1971 and 1974. The June 1974 recording of Money (track 11) is particularly nice to have because it does not appear to be available elsehwere.
Also of interest are interviews with David Gilmour and Nick Mason that demonstrate their French language skills. The other major contributor to the discussion is More and Obscured By Clouds Director Barbet Schroeder who looks back on his work with the band.
You may spot that side B is louder than A - the tape came to me that way. Overall this is a very enjoyable documentary, which gets better when your ears adjust to the medium wave reception.

Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd: Earliest Interview CBC Radio 1967

PFloydBroadhurstGardens67-797394
This is a rebroadcast from sometime prior to 1985, of perhaps the first interview Syd and the group did. It was originally recorded for the CBC in Canada. Portions of this interview pre-date the Floyd's recording contract!
Following are reminisces of group members and various early people connected with the band.
Run time is about 20 minutes.

In honor of the start of the Steely Dan 2011 "Shuffle Diplomacy" Tour next week, here is an UNCIRCULATED, never before released "blast from the past" celebrating it's 15th year this year. So what took so long? Well I've been recording Steely Dan shows since 1992 and time hasn't always been on my side. I turned 40 not too long ago
and since I never got a reponse back from a major player in amazing Steely Dan hard-to-find live recordings and obscurities I've wanted to trade with for years, I've finally decided to start sharing my stuff and giving back to the greater Dandom community. With the invaluable help of buttmanos, I will be releasing some pretty amazing Steely Dan/Donald Fagen stuff, if I do say so myself, in the coming months. ALL of my stuff is uncirculated.
The 1996 Steely Dan "Art Crimes" Tour played the larger sheds across the USA and The World Music Theatre fit the bill, with a capacity of 28,589. Really a great show with Wayne Krantz & Ricky Lawson. This is second to last night they played "Any Major Dude" live EVER until 13 years later during the "Rent Party Tour" in selected cities.
For some reason they dropped it after the Alpine Valley, WI show the next night. To this day I still don't know why? It was so great this night. Excellent versions of the early "Jack Of Speed" and a great take of the unreleased, "Cash Only Island" on this August night in Chicago in 1996. And just listen to Krantz & Becker tear it up on guitars on a stellar "Midnight Cruiser". One of the best "My Old Schools" you will ever hear. Krantz is just jaw-dropping.
Dedicated to Jim "Hoops" McKay and to the late "La Grande Dame de Dandom," Maggi McCoy.
You can hear Walter give a major dude shout-out to Hoops during the Band intros and listen for Donald dedicating "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" to Maggi after they play it. Hoop's invaluable Steely Dan resourse, "The Dandom Bluebook" celebrated it's 10th Anniversary last week. Sorry it took 15 years to get this to you Hoops. It's a shame about me. Happy Anniversary!
