The Velvet Underground And Nico: The Norman Dolph Acetate 1966

Norman-Dolph-Acetate-(Front)-792508
Unripened - The Norman Dolph Acetate (2007)
Cue, Log, m3u, md5, st5, ffp
complete Artwork 300 dpi
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000
Actual recording at Scepter was done rather quickly in about two business days (roughly 8-10 hours) while the third was spent listening to the material and the fourth was spent mixing. Soon after, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.

Scepter Studios acetate version
Norman Dolph's original acetate pressing of the Scepter Studios material contains several recordings that would make it onto the final album, though many are different mixes of those recordings and three are different takes entirely.
The acetate was pressed on April 25, 1966, shortly after the recording sessions. It would resurface decades later when it was bought by collector Warren Hill of Montreal, Canada in September 2002 at a flea market in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City for $0.75. Hill put the album up for auction on eBay in November. On December 8, 2006, a winning bid for $155,401 was placed, but not honored. The album was again placed for auction on eBay and was successfully sold on December 16, 2006 for $25,200.
It is important to note that ten songs were recorded during the Scepter sessions and only nine appear on the acetate cut. Dolph recalls "There She Goes Again" being the missing song (and, indeed, the version of "There She Goes Again" that appears on the final LP is attributed to the Scepter Studios session).
Though rumors have circulated concerning an eventual official release of this version of the album, this has yet to be confirmed or announced by any major record label.
However, a ripped version of the acetate began circulating the internet in January 2007. Bootleg versions of the acetate tracks have also become available on vinyl and CD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Velvet_Underground_and_Nico

Apparently GEE and CANN only had a couple of days of rehearsals before embarking on this tour. They were recruited to replace Gary Moore after his sudden departure. He, in turn, had been filling in for the recently departed Eric Bell.

Thanks to Snsik for sharing the raw tape of this. I'm happy with how my version turned out - not quite so hissy but with nice definition and bass presence. Obviously, no lossy noise reduction or anything! All the songs START in the right key now... but there wasn't much to be done about the wobbles in 'Echoes' and 'Saucerful'! There are still minor issues in 'Atom' as well, but there you go. I made some artwork, too. It woudl rate VG+ without the issues. Probably still does if you count the era in mind. Hope you enjoy it! Thomas.

review from UU:
Mudslide (TDOLZ Vol. 44)
March 21, 1970 show in Vancouver. Opinions are split on this tape. Some call it a "night to forget," were others call this a "demonic display." This release uses the soundboard tape source (not from vinyl). This is a title that is required for any collection. TDOLZ have packaged it using the TMQ cover, making this a celebration of the original vinyl release. The tape is poorly edited, but it definitely worth having. Communication Breakdown, with the Ramble On interlude, We're Gonna Groove, and Heartbreaker are definite stand outs. (Gerard Sparaco Jan 2000)
NOTE: This comes from the source cassette (a few generations away) but BEFORE the vinyl!

More "Vaults" to be opened soon

Deep Purple (with Tommy Bolin): 2 Shows from 1975

DeepPurple2
Festival Hall, Melbourne, Australia, November 26th, 1975
audience recording, unknown generation

OU: Despite its short and ill-fated career, Deep Purple Mark IV with Tommy Bolin on guitar has a certain popularity among the Deep Purple fans.
Following this request I'm seeding one of those shows today. I received it on a tape about 15 years ago, sadly I don't know the generation of the tape. I did a comparison with a 2 CDR set from the same show I received from somewhere else, to my ears the tape has slightly better sound. They're both from the same source.
Unfortunately, during the first three minutes the sound is very bad due to tape magnetism problems. The CDRs have the same problem, I don't know whether a copy of the recording without that failure exists. Seems to be a problem of the master tape or an early copy. For the overall quality, please check the sound sample attached to the following entry.
And regrettably, the recording isn't entirely complete. During the second verse of "I Need Love" and the beginning of "Stormbringer" a few seconds are missing. In "Stormbringer" it could be due to a tape flip, but in "I Need Love" the missing part is so short that it can hardly be from flipping or changing a tape. Don't know, perhaps someone made a mistake when copying the tape. The CDRs once again have the same faults.

The band's line up is:
Tommy Bolin - guitar
David Coverdale - vocals
Glenn Hughes - bass guitar, vocals
Jon Lord - keyboards
Ian Paice - drums

The setlist is:
CD 1:
01 - Burn
02 - Lady Luck
03 - Love Child
04 - Gettin' Tighter
05 - Smoke On The Water
06 - Georgia On My Mind
07 - Wild Dogs
08 - I Need Love (cut)
09 - Lazy (incl. keyboard + drum solo)

CD 2:
01 - This Time Around
02 - Owed To 'G'
03 - guitar solo
04 - Drifter
05 - You Keep On Moving
06 - Stormbringer (cut)
07 - Highway Star
08 - Tommy Bolin interview

Artwork is enclosed this time, lineage is as follows:
cassette tape (unknown gen) from a trade, mastering to harddisk -> eliminating glitches and a little bit of hiss reducing with Terratec Sound Laundry -> speed correction and normalizing with Sonic Foundry Sound Forge -> removing gaps with WaveLab Lite -> encoding to FLAC level 8 with sector boundaries aligned using TLH.

Informal Survey

-800wi
2 and 1/2 questions for those who prefer to respond:

a) Do you prefer to use rs or mega?
b) If a third host site was offered which one should it be and why?

No promises at this time...just thinking "out loud"...

I am still working on a couple of boots that need fixing. There will be a boot both on Sat and on Sun and 4 a day Mon - Thurs.

This ol' rocker's odometer makes a new click on Thursday. I never thought that rockin' meant rockin' chair ;)

I will be back on Friday of next week.
Have a great weekend.

Bob Dylan and the RTR played two shows at the Warehouse in New Orleans on May 3rd, 1976. The evening show is sourced from an excellent quality soundboard recording. The sound quality on this is a considerable improvement over all previous release and can be considered definitive. All of the Dylan performances are present and a selection of the other numbers fill out the balance of the set with 'Isis' being the biggest cut in the tape, eliminating the final several minutes of the song.
The first two Dylan songs are played alone accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. 'Love Minus Zero / No Limit' makes its only appearance on the second RTR tour. Dylan‚'s work with Guam begins with the duet 'Vincent Van Gogh' with Bob Neuwirth which is followed by the intense 'Maggie's Farm' played during this tour. Dylan exaggerates the hillbilly accent during the chorus lending a counterpoint of irony to the song, but he sings so intensely he has to pause before the final 'I ain‚'t gonna work on Maggie‚'s farm no more' and clears his throat. Two songs from Desire follow. 'Isis' is played with a heavy rock beat and is unfortunately cut after four and a half minutes, but that is a flaw on the source tape and there is nothing that can be done (unless an audience tape were to surface).
The final Dylan set takes up the bulk of disc two beginning with 'Shelter From The Storm.' The acoustic arrangement from Blood On The Tracks was transformed into an electric, fuzz laden stomper with Dylan shouting out the lyrics. The vulnerable desire for salvation is changed into a diatribe from one demanding respect wrapped into the hero's hubris. After 'You're A Big Girl Now' the only ever live performance of 'Rita Mae' follows. This Desire outtake, released two years after this show on the rare Masterpieces LP, sounds awesome and one that should have made more live appearances.
The weight of these performances lay in 'Idiot Wind' which effectively replaced 'Hurricane' in the set list for giving purpose to the proceedings. This performance seems to drag as Dylan spits out the lyrics. 'We're gonna go after this song - get a transfusion' are Dylan's words before the final eight minute version of 'Gotta Travel On' where everybody it seems takes a solo.
Friends And Other Strangers is packaged in a gorgeous digipack with many period photos on the artwork and given the sound quality and excellent performance is worth having.

OK, it's back to the Isolar Tour (1976) and another Old Gold release, although this was looking very doubtful for quite a while. I traded this title with Cagey, and for some unknown reason all of the disks I've tried to rip from his trades have been particularly troublesome. It took around two and a half hours to rip each of the first tracks - maybe more, because I couldn't just sit there and watch it, but after that all of the other tracks ripped without any trouble. While I didn't see it happen, the EAC text file tells me so, but the first track of each disk had read errors and sync problems as well as several suspicious positions. I've listened to each of these tracks and they sound fine to me, so I'm hoping that some of you fellows here might like them also.
Sound quality is not perfect, but it's better than some of the 1974 torrents I've seeded, and also a bit better than some of the Wembley shows. The first concert has a little low end distortion, and also fluctuates between clear and muffled. I'm betting that the taper couldn't hold the mics up for too long. ;) While they're quite enjoyable to my ears, I'd probably suggest they're probably not something the casual Bowie fan might like, so please check a single file first if you have sound quality doubts.
So without any further ado, set your computer to do it's stuff, and enjoy. :-)
Note: This bootleg contained other tracks from different venues. These tracks are not included here :(

OU's original notes: this is the complete recording of Buffalo 73, including all the tunings and audience-reception. here we have indeed pieces of tuning + audience completely missing in the other version (after Careful) where the crowd gotta requesting songs at repetition "Money /Arnold Layne /Point Me At The Sky etc...)
Echoes is split, starts > fades out > re-starts again. The same happens to The Great Gig In The Sky.
On The Run is split too ... fades out at the very end on the first CD and shows up again restarting from the very end on CD2 (I guess who made this version followed exactly the order on the tape).
the Yeeshkul-guy is here again! making 'his own alternate show' on the mic during the tunings/applauses ...
a wonderful performance, audience very warm and excited ...
not a great upgrade in sound compared to my previous version, same level of hiss, they sound actually about the same way, but this is my favourite version at now.
the guy (likely taper) screams "yeeshkul!": at the end of When You're In (2 times) ; at the end of Echoes ; at the end of Money
VGOOD + + (for it's era)
converted from shn to flac (level 8) by pict
revised notes: This is definitely one of my favorite shows for obvious reasons, but specifically for OBC/WYI, I think it rips. For this revision all I did was remove the hundred or so pops and clicks and all the digi noise that made this show an annoyance to listen to, for myself anyway.
There was a major dropout of sound in the right channel at about 38:36 lasting till about 43:42 on disc 2. I used the left channel to make up for the loss of sound in the right.
I did not use any noise reduction or cut any portions of the show. All revisions were done using adobe audition 1.5 and retracked to the original timings with cd wav. There are no more tics at the track marks now and this show can now be enjoyed the way it was meant to be. Enjoy!!!
Vorrect lineage would now be: cass[2] > CDR[?] > wav > shn > wav > flac > wav > adobe audition 1.5 > cdwav > flac (level 8)

OU Notes: Recording kindly provided by omsaps - cheers for taping this and posting it to me. As on my recording of the previous night, the fireworks were very loud (and clipped) and so with the taper's consent I simply reduced the volume of these peaks by about 5dB to soften them slightly and then normalized the recording. Beyond that I've done nothing apart from split it and listen to it, so all credit for this one goes out to omsaps the taper for a top job - cheers!
Not an easy one to split. Probably went a bit over the top with splitting all the snippets of covers into separate tracks as I just worked my way down the setlist, perhaps could have left them as a single track, but even that wouldn't have been
totally satisfactory.

OU Notes: Complete show based on the newly discovered 3rd source recording. The new source is an excellent sounding recording but incomplete. The Millard source which is also an excellent recording is used to fill in the missing sections with the old lesser quality source used to fill in the gaps missing in source 2 and 3. The version of source 3 used here is a direct transfer from the master cassettes.

David's (not me) notes:
I made several versions to get this mix. I call this the "old school" version.
The transfer used here for source 3 was done with the following.
3-12-75 Master Tapes>Kenwood KX-W791(monster cables)>Sansui
RG-7 10 band EQ(monster cables)>Spin Doctor>CDR>flac.
Intro - Rain song Cool edit pro was used to bring up one side that was 50% low.
Moby dick - Dazed cool edit pro was used to convert mono to stereo.
I was the first to get these master tapes to transfer, Of course not perfect so I did what was necessary.
The master cassettes consisted of the following.
Tape A Intro - Rain (one side is real low) flip side Kashmir - Trampled (perfect!) Tape B Moby - Dazed (only one side was recorded) flip side Stairway - Black dog (audio malfunctioned during recording and could not salvage) Tape C Encore - Heartbreaker (perfect!)
My Notes: This a very nice attempt to draw from three sources - thus the title that I gave it "Three Worlds Collide" (sounds epic!). -Dave

Stryper: San Francisco 1985 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Stryper
Wolfgang's
San Francisco, CA
January 4, 1985
Cassette>Sound Forge 6> FLAC 7>

OU: I got this show in a trade years ago and it's the earliest Stryper show I have and a fun one at that. This was recorded at a small club in frisco, decent sound for it's age, I'll rate it a solid 8. For the purist, I kept this as is but the only tweaking I did was the fade in/outs and some slight volume adjusting. I may go back in later and do some more tweaking but who knows, I kinda like the way it sounds as is. Enjoy!!

02. Loud 'N' Clear

it has some little portions more too.
the recorder is the same of course.
review from hokafloyd:
This was one of two benefit concerts played in London between the two North American tours of the year and the performance is of the usual caliber for this era. ‘Obscured by Clouds’ and ‘When You’re In’ both feature a good deal of keyboard and slide guitar soloing in these expanded live versions. Later Waters lets loose an ear-shattering scream in ‘Careful with that Axe, Eugene’—one of the most powerful and menacing ones you’ll ever hear. The rest of the show is strong and typical for mid-1973, save Wright and Gilmour singing different lines at the same time during ‘Us and Them.’ A saxophone player (probably Dick Parry, who appeared on The Dark Side of the Moon) is now a regular part of the lineup.

5. In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited
6. Now I'm Here
7. Big Spender/Jailhouse Rock/Be-Bop-a-Lula/God Save the Queen

OU Notes: I had to share this it's fabulous. From a tape recorded by Dan Lampinski and recently shared at Dime by Carl Morstadt I just made it run at the right speed as it was too fast. Download this, I guarantee you'll love it - unless you hate Queen, in which case, why are you reading this? The sound quality is phenomenal for a 1976 audience recording rich bass, clear treble, stereo separation and all and it's a heck of a gig. Everybody's on top of their game.I made some artwork as well. - Thomasbirch 2009

Pink Floyd: Uniondale 1980 (Ex- Aud) FLAC

1980-02-28
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
Uniondale, New York

The last night at Nassau Coliseum
A phenomenal audience recording from February 28, 1980 at the Nassau Coliseum. The level of clarity and detail of this source is nothing short of astonishing, especially considering this is a Pink Floyd show. All the instruments are captured just about perfectly with nice, solid bottom end and a good, crisp top end. This is definitely the best recording of the tour, aside from the official live release. Roger's introduction for "Run Like Hell" on this night was: "Do you like our pig? What? He's not a very nice pig, but he's a BIG PIG! This is a song for all the paranoids in the audience. It's called Run Like Hell. Home piggy, Home!" "Run Like Hell" has a rather interesting sounding bass line during the running sequence.

Pentagram: Demos 1970 FLAC

by request
42-20579378
photo has nothing to do with the boot. it just seems to fit.
aka: "Stone Bunny Rehearsals 1970" (though they never actually were a band by that name)
Pentagram are a long-running American heavy metal band from Virginia, most famous as one of the pioneers of doom metal. The band was quite prolific in the underground scene of the 1970s, producing many demos and rehearsal tapes, but did not release a full-length album until reforming in the early 1980s with an almost completely new lineup. Throughout the band's history the only constant member has been vocalist Bobby Liebling.

20 tracks - 55'mins.
Listenable quality (from 6 to 6.5 out of 10)

Track list:
01.Into The Ground
02.Free Land
03.Old Man
04.Sunday's Child
05.Nothing Left
06.Livin' In A Ram's Head
07.Lazy Lady
08.Cartwheel
09.Crucified
10.Peak
11.Mark My Words
12.The Pentagram
13.Livin' In A Ram's Head
14.Nothing Left
15.Lazy Lady
16.Cartwheel
17.Mark My Words
18.Please Don't Forget Me
19.Peak
20.Crucified

OU: Here's a bunch of songs from rehearsals in 1970, when the band played still under the name Stone Bunny. As far as I know the line up on these songs consist of Bobby (v), John Jennings (G), Greg Mayne (B) and Geof O'Keefe (D), except tracks 3 and 4 which are a sort of solo-demo with Bobby on vocals and guitar. Although I put this torrent under the category "Heavy Metal", don't expect heavy stuff all the time, because lots of songs are heavily influenced by 60's psychedelia.

OU NOTES: Nice show I drove a long ass way to see and tape. Well worth it. It wasn't very loud and actually I think this recording sounds better than what I remember hearing at the show. A*hole "woo hoo" guy is a bit distracting in a couple songs but for the most part he keeps his mouth shut. There was no way to put this on two 80 min Cdr's without going thru and cutting crowd, etc. "Soon" is just hypnotic, an amazing performance of this song, Jon's voice in perfect order at the end of the show. Hope you all enjoy!!!
