Dinosaurs: San Francisco 1982 (Soundboard) FLAC

di2
December 10, 1982
The Old Waldorf
San Francisco, CA, USA

EX Soundboard cassette master. This show features many guests including Country Joe McDonald, Mickey Hart, Sam Andrew, Righteous Raoul, Nicky Hopkins, Merl Saunders, David Nelson, Harold Aceves and Mike Wilhelm.
OU: There is a short seamless patch from an alternate 1st gen. soundboard source at the beginning of Blindman and for the stage talk before that song starts. (Fortunately, there were at least 2 different patches to the soundboard for this show and I got a copy of my one cut song soon after the show from the other source).
This is the first time that these shows have been torrented from a master source and as you might expect, it all sounds much better than the previous versions.

Barry Melton, John Cipollina, Robert Hunter, Peter Albin and Spencer Dryden with guests Sam Andrew, Mickey Hart, Nicky Hopkins, Country Joe McDonald, Merl Saunders, David Nelson, Harold Aceves, Mike Wilhelm and Joshua Raoul Brody [aka Righteous Raoul]. It should be noted that Sam Andrew plays alto sax and not guitar.

Lineage: Soundboard > Sony TC-D5M > Dolby B encoded TDK MA90 metal tapes.
Patch source: Same as above with an extra generation of TC-D5M > Dolbe B encoded TDK MA90 tape. (The Dolby was left off for the original transfer from the master to the 1st gen. cassette.)
2011 Transfer: Nakamichi Dragon [Dolby B decoded] > Macintosh with Digidesign AudioMedia III soundcard > Pro Tools ("nip and tuck" edits, normalization and tracking) > AIFF > xACT (FLAC level 8 files with sector boundaries verified).
(Note: This will easily fit onto 3 discs if the 2 shows are divided up differently.)

And finally - special thanks to John Cipollina (RIP) who helped to make this master recording possible! Enjoy and SHARE!

David Bowie & Dana Gillespie: "Bowpromo1" 1971 (FLAC)

david_bowie_dana_gillespie_bowpromo1
Here is a genuine David Bowie rarity! Featured on this UK only promotional LP are 5 songs that were to appear on 'Hunky Dory' but with different mixes plus 2 songs that didn't ever appear on the album. The Dana Gillespie material is also from the Mick Ronson / David Bowie 'Mainman' writing and production team. Sound quality is excellent, from a crisp near mint copy of the LP that belonged to Dana herself!
Euripides May 2011

In August 1971, David Bowie's manager Tony Defries had 500 promo LPs pressed to secure him and other Mainman artist Dana Gillespie a record deal. This promo album, featuring seven songs by David on side A and five by Dana Gillespie on the flip, is often being referred to as the BOWPROMO white-label album. The LP came in generic white outer and inner sleeves and had no printed labels, so its matrix number (BOWPROMO 1A-1/1B-1) is the only way to safely identify it. Most of the Bowie songs on this promo LP would appear four months later on Hunky Dory. However, as the recording and mixing of that album had not yet been finished, it transpired that the BOWPROMO LP contained two songs that would not end up on any official album for the next 20 years (Bowie's 'Bombers' and Gillespie's 'Lavender Hill'). Besides, it features marginally to very different early mixes/versions.
The following is a complete breakdown of the differences and relevant info on the selections:
Oh! You Pretty Things: side A opens with a version of 'Oh! You Pretty Things' that sounds very close to the Hunky Dory version, but with a few subtle differences. Bowie's vocal is slightly more upfront on the Hunky Dory version, while the piano on the BOWPROMO version sounds much more 'spatious'. The only genuine difference that is detectable though is the amount of reverb used on the chorus. The BOWPROMO uses this on both the main and backing vocals, whereas the album version uses much less, if any, for both.
Eight Line Poem: on Hunky Dory, the guitar is more central during the intro, drifts to the left and then back to the centre for the end. On the BOWPROMO version it starts on the right then switches between left and right during the second half, again ending in the centre. On the BOWPROMO, the piano completely natural sounding, whereas on the Hunky Dory it has a flanging effect applied. However, this version is best known for a different vocal take. Bowie sings 'The tactful cactus by your window' vs 'Tactful..' and 'They've opened shops...' vs 'Opened...'. The echo used on 'collision' in the line 'Mobile spins to its collision' is also missing on the BOWPROMO.
Kooks: a different stereo mix that fades two seconds later than the official version. E.g. in the intro, both acoustic guitars are centered in the Hunky Dory version whereas they are clearly present in the left and right channels in the BOWPROMO version. Also note the acoustic guitar throughout the entire song on the BOWPROMO, which has been completely faded in the verses on Hunky Dory.
It Ain't Easy: this song was possibly already recorded before 'Changes' and 'Life On Mars', as the latter two are not included on the BOWPROMO album. Of course they would have been very likely candidates to secure Bowie a record deal. 'It Ain't Easy' ended up in 1972 on Ziggy Stardust, in an identical version.
Queen Bitch: this tribute to The Velvet Underground appeared in slightly different form on Hunky Dory. Compared to the latter, the BOWPROMO lacks any reverb on the vocals but adds some reverb on Mick Ronson's riff. The BOWPROMO version can identified easiest by the very subdued 'Hmmm' at the very end, which apparently later was overdubbed on the Hunky Dory version.
Quicksand: the intro of the Hunky Dory version is in mono and only opens up to stereo at 0'51" ('I'm frightened by the total goal...'); the intro on the BOWPROMO is in full stereo from the very start. Furthermore, some additional strings have been added to the Hunky Dory version at 3'20" ('If I don't explain what you ought to know...').
Bombers-Andy Warhol intro: the version of 'Bombers' that in 1990 ended up as a bonus track on the Rykodisc edition of Hunky Dory is a rather tinny mix, lacking in bass. Besides, at 0'23" ("Seemed a good idea to drop a bomb on the wasteland here") and 1'12" ("So the Pentagon sent a cable and the Queen a telegram") into the Ryko mix, there are extra drum beats that do not sound convincingly intentional. As can be heard in the audio excerpt, these 'jumps' are absent on the BOWPROMO album. Also interesting is that 'Bombers' develops into an alternate version of the intro to 'Andy Warhol', which runs slightly longer, as it includes a strum on the acoustic guitar and a few more laughs of Bowie at the very end. 'Bombers' and part of the intro to 'Andy Warhol' have appeared on the ChangesThreeDavidRobertJones (Grace AZL1-1984) bootleg LP. The 'Andy Warhol' intro is also found on MissingLinksOneZiggy (Icon One), but the sound quality of both recordings is rather poor.
Mother Don't Be Frightened: the first of five Dana Gillespie tracks on side B. This song, which was produced and arranged by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, appeared in 1974 on her Weren't Born A Man album.
Andy Warhol: originally written by David for Dana Gillespie, musically backed by The Spiders and produced by Bowie/Ronson. This is a quite different, shorter version (2'45" vs 3'02"), compared to what appeared on Weren't Born A Man. The intro is faded in and the mix is more direct and less echoey than on that album. The outro on the BOWPROMO also is much shorter and less guitar-heavy. This version has recently been released on Oh! You Pretty Things.
Never Knew: released on Dana Gillespie's Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle and reissued on Andy Warhol.
All Cut Up On You: this is a much shorter version (3'23" vs 4'12") than on Weren't Born A Man.
Lavender Hill: this ballad was not released until the 1994 Andy Warhol CD.

Method:
- Record cleaned on Vpi machine.
- Audio sampled at 96/32 float.
- Filter to roll-off frequencies below 20 HZ (only below audible frequencies).
Audio restoration:
- 'Younglove' decrackling scripted method throughout.
- Manual declick and deglitch.
- All whole sides normalized to 100% NEVER using compression or limiting.

Synopsis: A very clean copy that actually used to belong to Dana Gillespie herself and according to her never got played until I had it briefly in the office whilst putting it on eBay for a friend (it sold for 2400 GBP!!!) In all respects a fine example of a standard EMI 1970's pressing. The restoration work needed to be careful due to the presence of a few large clicks but really nothing to bother complaining about. Artwork: Annoyingly I don't have the original scans anymore (the burglary you know...) so the art I have provided comes from a scan of the CD case I originally made for my DVD-A copy, others from the internet. Never mind, it's the music you're really after isn't it? Enjoy!

David Bowie: Toy 2001 (Unreleased Album) FLAC

Toy LP Front
(vinyl rip - true lossless 11 songs)
Liberated bootleg (eBay sourced)
Label: ISO /Columbia COL 5020001 1
Audio Source: Studio.
Lineage: LP --> Audacity --> WAV --> CEP2 --> FLAC 8
Number of Discs: 1
Artwork: included
Total running time: 49m 10s

Notes: Ripped from vinyl, declicked manually in CEP2, lineage checked for MP3 ancestry - CDDA 99% probable, (screenshots included)

Info: I bought this to see if the tracks were from the MP3 source, and was pleased to find they weren't. The LP arrived the same day as my replacement stylus, so this is a fresh transfer with a pristine needle.

Baby Loves That Way (original track 3);
Conversation Piece (original track 5) and
You've Got a Habit Of Leaving (original track 11)
Removed tracks as non-compliant with Dime Policy:

Afraid (3'28"): another new song recorded for Toy which later appeared on Heathen. The original Toy version of this song has a slightly different instrumentation and additional backing vocals. However, David's original vocal has been maintained on the Heathen version. Essentially, the Heathen version is a remix, not a re-recording. Most obviously, it lacks the Tony Visconti string arrangement.
Toy (4'46"): the third new song for Toy. It was offered as a free download (re-titled 'Your Turn To Drive') to customers who ordered their copy of Reality online from HMV. Later it was made available as an 'exclusive track' in the iTunes Music Store. The title 'Toy' remains a mystery to me!
Shadow Man (4'40"): this delicate re-recording of a 1971 demo is the highlight of the Toy album. A slightly longer version (4'48"), with an additional string section, was officially released on both EC editions of the 'Slow Burn' CD-single (ISO/Columbia COL 672744 1 and COL 672744 2) and on the UK 'Everyone Says 'Hi'' single (ISO/Columbia 673134 3). Its use as a B-side certainly does not do it justice.

The removed tracks were because they were MP3 sourced or official.

PLEASE READ THE FIRST COMMENT BEFORE CHOOSING TO DOWNLOAD -dave

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES: The description of the source of this recording says it was taken from a stereo mixdown tape off the radio station master reel. If this is so, the tape used for the mixdown must have been either low quality/taped over multiple times, or the mixdown was badly eq'd, and/or the tape was badly stored before the transfer to digital took place. It is a PREFM source and it does retains the qualities of a nicely spaced stereo mix. but the overall sound is quitestill b boomy and muddy sounding. Thankfully, I was able to get rid of some of this muddiness while maintaining the qualitiy of the original recording. The quality of the original mix is a little hidden in the source recording. Even after attenuating the frequencies causing trouble, the recording is still bass heavy. Apart from readjusting the frequency spectrum of every track, quite a bit of level adjustment was made to bring up the level of a very quiet recording. The level from track to track on the source recording seems to fluctuate from time to time so I tried to match track levels as much as possible. Finally, some slight compression was used to bring out some of the drowned out elements in the mix and maintain a more balanced overall sound. Conclusively, the recording is now clear, crisper, louder and more balanced. There are some clips and pops throughout the recording that I didnt really pay much attention to. They don't hinder listening enjoyment significantly in my opinion. Here is my gift to the legions of the Kink Kingdom. Enjoy!

Yes: Milwaukee 1979 (VG+ Aud - Tooleman Remaster) FLAC

I was going to see this show but was called into work - I made the wrong choice ;)
howe
Mecca Arena, Milwaukee, WI - April 26, 1979
**Low-circulation alternate recording**
**Mastered by TheTooleMan, 4/2003**
Lineage: first-gen source -> TheTooleMan (Sound Forge, etc) -> audio CD -> EAC -> FLAC

One of the best performances and recordings of the 1979 tour.
The source tape of this excellent recording is superior to the one usually circulating, but it doesn't see the light of day as often. It was made with shotgun mics and has a very up-close sound. A small gap in "And You And I" is patched with the more common tape.
Play it loud and come on down!
TheTooleMan

Review posted on Forgotten Yesterdays by David Momberg:
The unofficial recording of this is incredible!!!! The band was so on that night-Rick was incredible, very high in the mix! Steve puts new spins on the solo at the end of SK, and throughout Time and a Word, The whole medley is incredible, including a 5 sec. section from Ritual, and Awaken is stunning!!!! My favorite of all the recordings from the Tourmato tours-and there are many good ones!!! You must check this out!!!

OU: This cassette came from a well know and somewhat famous Zeppelin Collector from back in the late 80's. The cassette transfer to CDR was done recently. If someone could share their Master or a "Known Gen" copy of this show it would be greatly appreciated.
For those that may not know, there are 2 known audience recordings and 1 minute of silent 8mm colour footage of the bands performance.
Both recordings/tape sources of this performance are quite good in terms of sound quality, but this tape source (the 1st tape source) is a little better than the 2nd tape source (just slightly edging it out).
Both tape sources are quite simular in a lot of ways, they sound like they were recorded quite close to the stage, both don't suffer from annoying tape hiss bogging down the sound quality of the recordings, but the 1st tape source has a bit more clarity and punch, while the 2nd tape source has more low end bogging the sound down.
Some may find it interesting to know that both Judas Priest and Rick Derringer opened up for the band, not only very odd choices for opening acts, but very odd that Zeppelin would even have opening acts at this point in their career.~ acapulcogold
ENJOY THE MUSIC!

So far there have been 6 Matching Mole Records, 2 studio and 4 live (& all of BBC RADIO 1 is on ON THE RADIO, so really only 5 releases)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Atlanta 1978 (Pre-FM) FLAC

this one is fantastic!
BSatlantaFr
The Fox
Fox Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia - September 30, 1978
A JEMS Archive Upgrade in association with Slowburn

Source 1: 1st generation Pre-FM cassettes
Cassette Transfer: Nakamichi CR-7A (azimuth adjusted) --> Sound Devices USBPre2 audio interface (24/96) --> Audacity 1.3 capture
Source 2: 1st generation WINZ-FM broadcast recorded on reel to reel at 7-1/2 IPS
Reel Transfer: Otari 5050 mk2 --> Sound Devices USBPre2 audio interface (24/96) --> Audacity 1.3 capture

The two sources were edited together in Adobe Audition 3.0 multitrack at 24/96. Converted to 16/44 for this release. Traders Little Helper used to convert to FLAC. There is no mixing of the sources. What you hear is Source 1 with the exceptions noted below.

23 Raise Your Hand

OU Notes: Without question, a significant factor in what makes the Darkness tour Bruce's greatest in the minds of many is the series of live FM broadcasts he did from July to December 1978.
These sublime broadcasts reached listeners who had only heard tales of how good Bruce and the band were in concert and now they could hear it for themselves. Those who were already fans considered the Agora or Winterland wonderful gifts and surely hundreds if not thousands recorded them off the radio as they happened and played them again and again like the rest of us because they sounded so good. For an entire generation of fans, the Darkness tour broadcasts were the catalyst to deeper devotion, especially in Europe.
That's because those off-air recordings provided the source tapes for major bootleg releases like Piece De Resistance (9/19/78) and Live in the Promised Land (12/15/78). It has been suggested that as many as 50,000 copies were sold of the three-LP Piece. And there's a plausible, long-standing theory that Springsteen's fanbase in Europe was ignited by these bootlegs. Remember, in 1978 Springsteen didn't tour Europe (it would be another three years before that happened), and he played a mere four shows there in 1975. For fans starved for Springsteen in England, Italy, Sweden or Germany, the Darkness tour bootlegs confirmed the legend and expanded the base.
And while The Roxy, The Agora, Passaic and Winterland have become so iconic as to be treated as proper nouns, there were five radio broadcasts in 1978, not just four. So why isn't The Fox another capitalized term in the Springsteeen Dictionary?
September 30, 1978, a mere 11 days after the Passaic broadcast blasted out of radios throughout the northeast, the E Street Band rolled into the Fox Theater in Atlanta for the first of two shows (rescheduled from July after Bruce came down with a throat infection) that marked the end of the first long leg of the Darkness tour. Night one was broadcast live across the southeast on 20 or so radio stations according to the indispensable Brucebase Wiki.
As legend has it, on the night of September 30, storms rolled across the region and the bad weather is blamed for reception problems with the radio broadcast. Unlike Passaic where masses recorded, it seems but a few folks in the south had their tape decks rolling as Bruce took the stage at the Fox, and tapes of Atlanta have never been as good as the other four '78 broadcasts.
The best bootleg source to date, Same Old Played Out Scenes (Doberman), describes the recording problems in its liner notes: "major reception problems and resulting sound defects for most people recording [are] the principle [sic] reason why this concert has become something of a rarity on unofficial releases over the years as the sound quality was just not as good as the other [broadcasts]." So much so that the Atlanta show never even made it to bootleg vinyl, which is amazing when you consider how widely bootlegged the other four shows were.
Same Old Played Out Scenes itself is a composite of "four different source tapes," per the liners, "with the great bulk of the material taken from a previous CD release called Here's To Ya, which remains, as far as we know, the best sound quality source tape of this concert, though with certain songs that were either edited or suffer major disruption replaced by the best possible alternate recording."
Isn't this the point in the notes where I write "until now"?
Earlier this year, JEMS acquired several tapes from a kind and generous soul who, while not a collector, had a number of interesting recordings land in his lap back in the day. The tapes had not been played in more than three decades. In the box were two cassettes of the Atlanta show. As luck would have it, they weren't merely an upgrade of the broadcast but a pre-FM recording of the show dubbed from 15 IPS reels.
The sound quality of the pre-FM source is truly first rate, lacking the heavy compression of the over-the-air broadcast and boasting much wider stereo separation than any extant FM source. The pre-FM also corrects most of the speed issues with the previous bootlegs. And we do pick up some previously missing audio bits. These includes a few sentences spoken by Bruce before "Santa Claus" and, more significantly, the 40 or so seconds that were missing from the start of "Backstreets" plus some band member intros after that song. That being said, the cassettes were in less-than-ideal condition and required re-shelling and baking for playback. Experienced ears might pick up on very minor fluctuations (e.g. on the tape flips) that couldn't be corrected.
In short, what we do have sounds awesome. However, because it is Atlanta, we're still snake bit. The pre-FM source is missing the entire encore (presumably a lost third cassette, and yes, we've asked if it might be hiding behind dresser or something), needs a long patch (6+ minutes) from halfway through "Prove It All Night" through the start of "Racing in the Street" (we had hoped tape baking would fix this damaged part but it didn't), plus a tiny patch at the very end of "Because the Night."
But even that bad news has a silver lining, as JEMS also found--gathering dust in its own archive--a 7-1/2 IPS reel to reel of the full broadcast from WINZ-FM Miami that we feel is superior to what's found on Same Old Played Out Scenes, having a more natural, less processed and compressed sound. This new reel was used to patch the longer missing bits (e.g. the "Prove It" to "Racing" chunk noted above) in the pre-FM and provide the encore.
The only material flaw in the WINZ source are a few short (one second or less) dropouts in "Raise Your Hand" that, while unfortunate, aren't particularly annoying, they're just there. After experimenting with using SOPOS to patch the dropouts, we decided that the "repaired" version sounded worse than the original as the gaps are so short, the change in sources is jarring. So we've left "Raise Your Hand" from the WINZ tape intact, with dropouts, but also included an extra file of "Raise Your Hand" with no dropouts from Same Old Played Out Scenes. You can choose which you prefer.
The end result is not perfect, but it is 100% complete, for the first time ever, and it is the best-sounding Fox Theater recording by a wide margin, especially the 85% of the show that's now pre-FM, including the show's one-off cover of James Brown's "Night Train." Brown grew up in Georgia which would explain this inspired cover choice. Bruce and the band perform the instrumental complete with a James Brown-style intro and we can only presume what dance moves he gave the crowd during this one.
The fresh, azimuth-adjusted transfer of both sources was done last month and JEMS' longtime colleague Slowburn handled the patching and prepping which was a lot of work so kudos to him too. Samples provided. We hope you enjoy the latest in our on-going upgrade series.
So here is The Fox, finally ready to take it's rightful place in Springsteen bootleg history.

A Pink Floyd Miscellany: 1967-2005 (DVD)

Pink Floyd - A Pink Floyd Miscellany 1967-2005 (TPR DVD 004) - slim
[This Place Records TPR DVD 004]
Video : MPEG-2, 720x576, 16:9, 25fps, PAL, 9300kbps
Audio : 48kHz, stereo, 256kbps
Length: 59 min

1. Arnold Layne (1967 promo)
2. Point Me At The Sky (1968 promo)
3. Cymbaline (1970 KQED TV show)
4. Grantchester Meadows (1970 KQED TV show)
5. One Of These Days (1972 Ian Emes animation)
6. Money (1975 backdrop film)
7. Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 (1979 promo)
8. The Fletcher Memorial Home (1983 promo)
9. Learning To Fly (1987 promo)
10. High Hopes (1994 promo)
11. Comfortably Numb (2005 Live8)

Details: This one-hour compilation of Pink Floyd videos was produced in 2011, as part of the "Why Pink Floyd?" reissue campaign.
It included some fantastic upgrades compared to what was circulating until then, such as the Point Me At The Sky 1968 promo video, Ian Emes' animation film for One Of These Days, and restored footage from the 1970 KQED TV show.
This compilation was first broadcast on 16Sep11 by BBC Four, but as usual with BBC broadcasts showing musical content, some annoying text was added on the videos, to describe parts of Floyd history.
The present DVD comes from a new broadcast of that program, aired by Belgian TV channel CANVAS on 08Dec11. The good news is that the annoying historical descriptions that ruined most of the videos on the BBC broadcast are gone! The videos
are now much more enjoyable without the ugly BBC banners and texts. There's a discrete CANVAS logo through the program, but it's much less disturbing that the BBC texts anyway.
Enjoy! -MOB
