Alanis Morissette: Paris 1999 (FM) FLAC

Concert d'un soir - RTL - Paris, France, 02 March 1999
Lineage: FM radio -> Cool Edit 96 -> WAV

OU: This is a very special show from Alanis at the French RTL radio station in Paris, in a studio in front of 200 people. This recording has been made from the radio broadcast of the show few weeks later. Two songs have been left aside for this broadcast.
The name of the radio show was "Concert d'un soir" (could be translated by "One night - one show"). An incredible show IMO ! Enjoy.

OU Notes: I picked this LP up in a record store in Irvington, NJ called "Vintage Vinyl Records" about 30 years ago. I paid $9.99 for it. Sticker still on LP cover. The date on the back cover says 1966 for Olympia and 1965 and 1968 respectively for the 2 studio tracks. I am not sure if this is correct or not. As far as snap, crackle, and pop goes Side A is much cleaner than Side B. This was a raw transfer with no NR or SPC. I leave that to the people who know what they are doing as pitch and speed goes.
Pictures of the front and back of the LP cover as well as the vinyl itself are included. Note, on the vinyl itself, has Slipped Disc Records and on the back cover it says F-ckin' Andrew's Records.
Enjoy, Drgiggles1

Rush: East Troy 1992 (IEM Soundboard) FLAC

Scanning The Waves PE - Front
Scanning the Waves
6/27/92
Alpine Valley Theater
East Troy, Wi
Source: Scanner

OU:Now thanks to the taper, we have the full scanner source of this show. Best yet, this is mastered from the original DAT master. Since this is a scanner source, there are some receptions problems, but it seems to be a problem only on the guitar channel and not on the soundboard channel. It isn't anything bad, but it is there from time to time. Alex can be heard on the left channel as an electric guitar with no effects. Since Alex uses a wireless guitar system, some people were able to pick it up on a scanner and record it. This is one such case. Alex comes through very clearly with the rest of the band on the monitor channel on the right channel.
While this is probably not a recording I would listen to a lot, it does have its merits. A recording like this provides a very unique perspective and insight into how the songs are deconstructed because you can follow one instrument almost exclusively. If you are a guitar player and are trying to learn Alex's style, this recording is very useful. Special thanks to Admiral Nelson for lending us his source to use for this production.

It's a this and that, you are there production. Do not sell this recording. Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly.

OU comments: This is one of 2 PG masters I have, but even though it was recorded with my deck and mikes, I was not at this show. My friend who recorded this show was sitting in the vicinity of 20th row, right in the middle on the floor. Although Peter's talk is not real clear, and not always loud enough, his vocals and all the instruments come through in You Are There fashion. You can't get much more there than the 20th row in the middle of the Orpheum. The AKG's do pretty well for this kind of music, and it was good music from Peter's 3rd album tour, creatively
entitled "Peter Gabriel" (just as were the 1st 2). The crowd was very supportive, even patient when Peter was having some trouble deciding what to play next, and after some level variations that I've fixed the best I can in the 1st song "Intruder", the sound and recording quality get up to a B+ range and stay there for the rest of a nice concert, except a little more variation and some distortion in first part of "all through the wire" when the levels got bumped during the encore break. It's a very nice recording, and it needed some fairly serious ICPVR (individual clap peak volume reduction) to get it upload-ready, now it sounds better
than ever, other than that, also done to reduce some mike knocks, DC offset and normalizing to balance the levels out, nothing else has been done to alter this nice master recording except some splicing to smooth out flips.
I haven't heard quite enough PG on his own to know how this stacks up to his other 1980 performances (I've only heard 1 other, from N.Y.) but I thought this was a good show, probably not Peter's absolute best but certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Thanks to J. Z. for recording this one. (not Jay-Zee, the rapper, different guy entirely) He managed to flip both times between songs well enough so you may not even be able to figure out where the flips are (I like that.) I think this may have been his first recording with a manual level setting deck, and after the 1st 3 minutes or so, he did a good job setting them not too low or high, not always easy at a Peter show, even with good seats and sound. It may well have been his first PG show too and he had a great time. I have about 20 PG shows (w/o Genesis) and this
is one of my favorites, even more now that it's remastered. There is a fadeout after Games Without Frontiers, and a fadein before band introductions for the purpose of burning to disc. There was a deck shutoff between encores but only a couple of Peter's words are cut out there, the song is not cut.

OU: I taped this show myself off the radio, so this is one of my masters. I used my very first cassette recorder, which was a Pioneer "single-header", the model number of which I have forgotten. May it rest in peace ; it was a great deck. I also used my JVC TD-W505 stereo double cassette deck. I created 2 master copies. The rest of the recording info you can find above. My radio setup was in an excellent position in my house, so you'll hear NO static, signal drift, dropouts, tuning problems, etc. This is a PRISTINE recording so no one should have any complaints at all. This IS the complete show and it is phenomenal. Listen to this on headphones to hear some
interesting effects; this can obviously also be very well-played on your home stereo, car stereo, etc. You will LOVE this FM broadcast. That's about all I have to rave about, so let's wrap this thing up....
Finally, no buy, no sell, no mp3. Please trade this freely as it probably is fairly rare, unless you live in or around Milwaukee, WI and then you may not have a master copy. You do now !! This show will be a welcome addition to any Trower fan's collection. jojogunne 7/22/2011

Yes: Louisville 1979 (Pre?-FM) FLAC

** A TooleMan Remaster **
digital_art
Radio station master! (I think)
**Low-circulation recording**
Lineage: radio station master reel (probably) -> audio CD's -> EAC -> TheTooleMan's tricks of the trade -> FLAC

OU: Don't let the ragged beginning of this recording fool you. Although it is missing the first two songs of the concert, the quality improves dramatically after several minutes, and starting with the long medley it sounds really great.
This seems to be a professional recording, with open mics mounted on stands - that's my best guess. Sounds like a lot of the monitor mix was picked up by the mics, as it was very heavy on the midrange frequencies. I took care of that in the master.
I wonder if this recording was made by the radio station that promoted the concert, WLRS. If so, maybe there's a better copy in their archives, or one that can be transferred more cleanly to the digital domain.
Enjoy!

WLRS Award Ceremony
Roundabout

The following paragraph, written by John Mock for Forgotten Yesterdays, explains the award ceremony track:
"Here's some trivia for you...the Tormato tour stop in Louisville on 4/13, 1979 was advertised as a 'big surprise' by the local heavyweight rock station, WLRS-102 FM as Yes was the 102nd concert promoted by WLRS... they attempted to get Pink Floyd as a surprise band to make a double bill....that fell through and their last stop they tried to pull out was free beer for the sold out Freedom Hall crowd, but the promoter would not go with that due to liability and under-age drinking concerns.... so the 102nd concert for WLRS turned out to be anti-climactic, just a normal Yes show that was POWERFUL....I need another fix of On the Silent Wings Of Freedom!"

Charlie Parker: Boston 1954 (FM) FLAC

Charlie_Parker_5
Hi-Hat Club, Boston, MA
1954-01-18
Goody Pitch Corrected Edition

WCOP broadcast > ? > "The Bird You Never Heard" (Stash STCD 10) > EAC > FLAC (secure mode) + checksum by amellowsoul >
Goody's additional lineage:
TLH (WAV) > Audition (Correct DC Offset; Pitch Bender varous amounts*; Amplified tracks) > TLH (FLAC Level 8; .ffp)
*Pitch of 1,2 and 4 were approx. 46 cents flat. Pitch of 3 was approx. 27 cents flat.
Corrected DC Offset for all tracks.
Amplified by various amounts.

01 Ornithology
02 Out Of Nowhere
03 My Funny Valentine*
04 Cool Blues

Charlie Parker - Alto sax
Herbie Williams - Trumpet
Rollins Griffith - Piano
Jimmy Woode - Bass
Marquis Foster - Drums

* - This might be from a different night, but still from the Hi-Hat Club in 1954-01.
In his latter career, Bird was a free agent, and bands were made of local musicians backing him up.
Surely Symphony Sid Torin was there, as he moved to Boston sometime in 1953, and continued to MC Charlie Parker radio broadcasts from there. However, his comments were edited out on an unknown date.
If you don't get moved by this version of "My Funny Valentine", then you have no soul! ;)
None of these songs are from the offical release, "Bird At The High Hat" on Blue Note. The dates used on that were from 1953-12-19 and 1954-01-24.
As always, enjoy!

Pink Floyd: Heywood's Reworking of Zabriskie Point 1970 (Studio) FLAC

Last one of my posts for this project
1970_Zabriskie_Point
not the cover
This is a reworking of the 370 Roman Yards album that I had the pleasure of working on for the last year. As the original was intended to be included in the A Total Zabriskie Point Of View box set that we will be releasing soon, it is sequenced in the order that WRomanus feels works best for that collection, with the 8 song Lost Album first, then the outtakes after that. I feel that as a standalone release it should have been reworked to stand as such, with a trackilst and editing that made it flow better as a single album of its own. I have no problems with the original tracklist when it comes to putting it in the box set, just with the standalone release. So I have created this as an alternate point of view to that of the main version. This is not meant to replace of challenge the 370 Extended album; rather it is a compliment to it, one that offers another prespective of how it can work.
Below is a list of the different versions of the material I've used to create this aling with the reasons for putting the songs in this particular order. Many of the songs are the same as the ones on 370RYExtended, but many are different mixes or edits. This is because multiple versions were createdd for the project, and the popular choice won out to get on the release. I personally preferred some more effects heavy mixes than the ones we used, and those appear here for the first time.
I was going to wait to release this until after the box set came out, and do it with the second CD as well, but the only difference on that disc would be the order, not the mixes. I decided that this is the only thing that was substantially reworked, so it was all that needed to be put out on its own. Listenders can easily shuffle the order to whatever they feel works best on CD 2, and it wasn't necessary for me to offer an alternate for it.

01 Trailer (vocal version) an introduction to ZP, and to the entire project that follows
02 Heart Beat Pig Meat (official version) - the constant lead in track
03 Country Song (remixed version) - good laid back rock song after the psychedelia shows this album is not going to be just about ambient sounds right off. The vocals on this have been reverbed more than the 370Extended mix, and the snare sound has been slightly EQd to try to make it less puffy and dull. Not a lot you can do to that without messing up the sound of the rest of the band, so its subtle.
04 The Violent Sequence (re-edited version) a nice mellow piano piece to break up the rock songs. Heavily re-edited to remove mistakes and control room noises. The big part without a chorus section from the middle of the song, where Rick seems to get a bit lost, is now at the end of the song as it fades out into the distance. Some nice reverb added to this to make it stereo and sound more like the inside of a piano would sound.
05 Take Off 2 - Some more rock 'n' roll to wake you up a little and serve as an introduction to...
06 Crumbling Land (official extended version) - segued right out of TO2 as was done for the test mix for the film. My take on this is that it's not normal for Pink Floyd to have a full album of isolated songs. Although the version of this song originally attached to TO2 was a different take, this is the one we have complete, so it works just as well
07 Love Scene #3 - after that blast of blues-metal and psychedelic country music we need a little break.
08 Country Song Theme (vocal version) A reprise of CS to remind you this is a thematic soundtrack. This mix is more produced than that used on the 370EXtended record, with reverb on the vocals and a proper fade out.
09 Love Scene #4 (piano version) - a little spacey jazz to take you away. I've used the Rhino "piano only" version here because the vibes on the other mix are out of tune.
10 Country Song Theme 2 (harpsichord) - another reminder, and a break between spacey numbers. This mix is faded out so as to not devolve into a breakdown as on the AJTTaS outtake.
11 Oenone - the spaciest track there is. floats you away. The extended ending created for 370 RY is nearly intact here, but with the very end clipped in order to segue directly into...
12 Fingal's Cave - Loud, bombastic blues rock, coming directly out of Oenone similarly to the Omayyad sequencing.
13 Rain In The country - bringing you back to earth, but softly
14 Love Scene #5 - don't get used to the ground. This will take you flying away again
15 Alan's Blues (edit # 2) - The song usually used by PF as an encore in live performance. This is a custom edit like the 370 RY one, though not as constrained by time restrictions as that one. The verse with the mistakes on the drums and guitar is still cut, but the song continues to its natural full ending rather than fading out.
16 Come In #51, Your Time Is Up - the explosive finale to the full soundtrack

OU's Show description & comments follow: This is a recording of the only time I saw "The Nuge" back in the day. In fact, the only other time I saw him was at THE AMBOY DUKES Reunion in Detroit in 2009. This was a great double bill with "The Nuge" opening, and ZZ TOP headlining, right when "Tres Hombres" was breaking. This recording is irritating to me, as the guy fades out the audience after EVERY song! Why??!! Not great sound, but reasonable, and it improves quickly as the sound crew adjusts the P.A. Wish I had the ZZ TOP portion, but I don't. Enjoy. bpthree

Todd Rundgren & Utopia: Dallas 1974 (VG- Aud) FLAC

1974
McFarlin Auditorium - Dallas, Texas
(1st Utopia show in Dallas)

Todd Rundren: guitar and vocals
Moogy Klingman: keyboards
Ralph Schuckett: keyboards
Jean-Yves Labat de Rossi: synthesizers and horns
John Siegler: bass and cello
Kevin Ellman: drums and percussion

November 1974 (probably the 16th since they were in Ok. city on 11/14, the Univ. of Texas in Austin, Texas on 11/15 and Baton Rouge, La. on 11/17. they played in Monroe, La. on 11/19 so maybe they played Dallas on the 18th? but probably not.
this show is definitely in Dallas since Todd says it's their 1st show in Dallas.)
1st gen. audience recording

setlist:
1: utopia 17:06
2: Black Maria 6:26
3: medley:
don't you ever learn? >
everybody's going to heaven >
king kong reggae >
sunset blvd. 16:40
4: the last ride 6:18
5: open my eyes (spliced, tape flip) 7:11
6: the ikon 43:51 (spliced, tape flip)
(including a piece of "we gotta get you a woman")
7: sons of 1984 4:10
8: band introductions :56
9: slut 5:37
10: couldn't I just tell you? 3:34
11: just one victory 6:06
runtime: 118:00

lineage: master tape made with unknown deck/mikes/tape > 1st gen. analog copy (2 TDK-SA 60 min. cassettes) >
played on Nak. 300 into soundforge (wav) > flac (sb's aligned)
recorded by J.C. (thank you for sharing the 1st gen. copy in the late 1970's) Do not sell this recording. Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly. This thing's lost enough already after 36+ years.

OU: the recording is quite heavy on the bass and lower midrange frequencies, typical of a large room and an old small tape recorder audience tape. probably recorded not very close to the stage, so it's a you're sorta kinda there production, but it's listenable. and the ikon goes on for 45 minutes. it's prime Todd, and the show isn't even listed in a commonly referred to todd rundgren giglisting found at: http://home.comcast.net/mrrandom/tourtoddr.html and could probably stand some EQ by someone who knows how to do it right.
this was not the same setlist as the early 1974 utopia shows, or even as late as October which had Freedom Fighters and some had Freak Parade, but not "the ikon". this version is the longest one I've ever heard of the ikon (even minus the minute or so, if that, of WGGYAW). the sound is not that great but the music is really nice. apparently the masters were also done on 60 minute tapes (not a good idea on this tour, but at least it's close to the full show) if burning to CD, best to start CD 2 with track 6 (the ikon) which will not fit on an 80 min. disc in sequential order on CD one. the track starts with Todd talking about it.

Lou Reed: Los Angeles 1976 (FM) FLAC

"Live At The Roxy - Cassette Version"
Artwork New Front
1st December 1976
Live at the Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles
KMET FM Radio Broadcast

This concert has appeared in at least four guises over time, each with slightly different track listings/times:
1. Claim 2 Fame [CD source]
2. Super Golden Radio Shows [CD source]
3. Sweet Lou [LP source]
4. Cassette Source [Gordon L's source!]

Lineage : I downloaded this new torrent from the Cooking For The Down Five blog as flac files which listed it as a "complete first generation tape of the KMET FM Radio Broadcast".
After that I put it through Magic Audio Cleaning Lab > CD > EAC > Wav > Flac Frontend > flac8

OU: In my opinion the sound is very good, and to my ears is better than the Claim 2 Fame CD. It sounds like it could even be the source for that CD as it has extended versions of many songs including the various DJ chat that has been edited out of the Claim 2 Fame CD.

I have made some alterations to this cassette version:
a) I have boosted the left channel (due to drop in level) on Kicks (from 7:13), She's My Best Friend, I'm Waiting For The Man, You Wear It So Well, Claim To Fame, Coney Island Baby (from 1:25).
b) I very slightly gave extra punch to most songs as they sounded slightly thin.
c) I smoothed over some of the joins between tracks (ie this shows that it wasn't taped continuously off the radio) and a couple of drop-outs.
d) I moved the start of some tracks (this, and (c) above, is why the timings are now different to the original blog files).
e) I faded out the ends of both CD's slightly so they didn't end abruptly.
f) I removed Heroin which has been officially released (on Between Thought And Expression boxset).

The tracklisting is:
Disc 1 (55:42)
01: Intro (9:24)
02: Sweet Jane (4:54)
03: I Believe In Love (3:50)
04: Lisa Says (7:10)
05: Kicks (11:40)
06: She's My Best Friend (5:45)
07: I'm Waiting For The Man (12:57)

Disc 2 (43:26)
01: A Sheltered Life (10:32)
02: You Wear It So Well (4:58)
03: Claim To Fame (3:01)
04: Vicious Circle (4:29)
05: Walk On The Wild Side (11:17)
06: Coney Island Baby (9:06)

According to The Rock And Roll Animal webpage the whole concert was:
1. Intro Jam
2. Sweet Jane
3. I Believe In Love
4. Lisa Says
5. Kicks
6. She's My Best Friend
7. I'm Waiting For The Man
8. A Sheltered Life
9. You Were It So Well
10. Claim To Fame
11. Vicious Circle
12. Walk On The Wild Side
13. Coney Island Baby
14. Rock And Roll Heart
15. Charley's Girl
16. Kill Your Sons
17. Satellite Of Love
18. Berlin
19. Temporary Thing
20. Ladies Pay
21. Heroin (appears on Between Thought And Expression official boxset)
22. White Light/White Heat

I have included new artwork as well as including the artwork originally included.
Enjoy!

ljs_54 notes: Received in a trade a while back as an audio cdr. Source is unknown but the sound is very good for a 38 year old recording.
Barri & Sloan are the team who wrote "You Baby" for the Turtles and "Eve of Destruction", which became an anthem for Barry McGuire, plus a few other popular songs.
Track 9 appears to be the end of the set so i don't know if it's complete. The 2nd set obviously is not.
Some of it could also be from another day as they also played the Fillmore on 10-06 and 10-07. Playing order all 3 days would have been Mad River => Grass Roots => Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Artwork is what I got with the trade. Track 09 is definitely "House of Stone" so the artwork is incorrect. The untitled instrumental jam is "Grass Roots Jam" on the artwork.I would go with the names and spellings on this setlist.
Tracks 01 and 05 are slightly cut at the beginning and you'll find a couple of other very minor glitches, but this is in good shape for its age.

AMG Biography by Bruce Eder:
The Grass Roots had a series of major hits — most notably "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," and "Two Divided by Love" — that help define the essence of the era's best AM radio. Although the group's members weren't even close to being recognizable, and their in-house songwriting was next to irrelevant, the Grass Roots managed to chart 14 Top 40 hits, including seven gold singles and one platinum single, and two had hits collections that effortlessly went gold. The group's history is also fairly complicated, because there were at least three different groups involved in the making of the songs identified as being by "the Grass Roots."
The Grass Roots was originated by the writer/producer team of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri as a pseudonym under which they would release a body of Byrds/Beau Brummels-style folk-rock. Sloan and Barri were contracted songwriters for Trousdale Music, the publishing arm of Dunhill Records, which wanted to cash in on the folk-rock boom of 1965. Dunhill asked Sloan and Barri to come up with this material, and a group alias under which they would release it. The resulting "Grass Roots" debut song, "Where Were You When I Needed You," sung by Sloan, was sent to a Los Angeles radio station, which began playing it.
The problem was, there was no "Grass Roots." The next step was to recruit a band that could become the Grass Roots. Sloan found a San Francisco group called the Bedouins that seemed promising on the basis of their lead singer, Bill Fulton. Fulton recorded a new vocal over the backing tracks laid down for the P.F. Sloan version of the song. The Bedouins were, at first, content to put their future in the hands of Sloan and Barri as producers, despite the fact that the group was more blues-oriented than folk-rock. However, the rest of the group was offended when Fulton was told to record their debut single, a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Ballad of a Thin Man," backed by studio musicians.
When that single, released in October of 1965, became only a modest hit, the Bedouins — except for their drummer, Joel Larson — departed for San Francisco, to re-form as the Unquenchable Thirst. Sloan and Barri continued to record. "Where Were You When I Needed You" was released in mid-'66 and peaked at number 28, but the album of the same name never charted.
Amid the machinations behind Where Were You When I Needed You, no "real" Grass Roots band existed in 1966. A possible solution came along when a Los Angeles band called the 13th Floor submitted a demo tape to Dunhill. This group, consisting of Warren Entner (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Creed Bratton (lead guitar), Rob Grill (vocals, bass), and Rick Coonce (drums), was recruited and offered the choice of recording under their own name, or to take over the name the Grass Roots, put themselves in the hands of Sloan and Barri, and take advantage of the Grass Roots' track record. They chose the latter, with Rob Grill as primary lead vocalist.
The first track cut by the new Grass Roots in the spring of 1967 was "Let's Live for Today," a new version of a song that had been an Italian hit, in a lighter, more up-tempo version, for a band called the Rokes. "Let's Live for Today" was an achingly beautiful, dramatic, and serious single and it shot into the Top Ten upon its release in the summer of 1967. An accompanying album, Let's Live for Today, only reached number 75.
The group began spreading its wings in the studio with their next album, Feelings, recorded late in 1967, which emphasized the band's material over Sloan and Barri's. This was intended as their own statement of who they were, but it lacked the commercial appeal of anything on Let's Live for Today, sold poorly, and never yielded any hit singles.
Eleven months went by before the group had another chart entry, and during that period, Sloan and Barri's partnership broke up, with Sloan departing for New York and an attempt at a performing career of his own. The band even considered splitting up as all of this was happening. The Grass Roots' return to the charts (with Barri producing), however, was a triumphant one — in the late fall of 1968, "Midnight Confessions" reached number five on the charts and earned a gold record. "Midnight Confessions" showed the strong influence of Motown, and the R&B flavor of the song stuck with Barri and the band.
In April of 1969, Creed Bratton left the band, to be replaced by Denny Provisor on keyboards and Terry Furlong on lead guitar. Now a quintet, the Grass Roots went on cutting records without breaking stride, enjoying a string of Top 40 hits that ran into the early '70s, peaking with "Temptation Eyes" at number 15 in the summer of 1971. Coonce and Provisor left at the end of 1971, to be replaced by Reed Kailing on lead guitar, Virgil Webber on keyboards, and Joel Larson — of the original Bedouins/Grass Roots outfit — on drums. They arrived just in time to take advantage of the number 16 success of "Two Divided by Love," which was the last of the Grass Roots' big hits.
The Grass Roots soldiered on for a few more years, reaching the Top 40 a couple of times in 1972, but their commercial success slowly slipped away during 1973. They kept working for a few more years, but called it quits in 1975.
Rob Grill remained in the music business on the organizing side, and by 1980 was persuaded by his friend John McVie to cut a solo album, Uprooted, which featured contributions by Mick Fleetwood and Lindsay Buckingham. By 1982, amid the burgeoning oldies concert circuit and the respect beginning to be accorded the Grass Roots, Grill formed a new Grass Roots — sometimes billed as Rob Grill and the Grass Roots — and began performing as many as 100 shows a year. Their presence on various oldies package tours have seen to it that the Grass Roots' name remains visible in the '90s.

Often overlooked power-pop/metal band from London, Ontario led by one Nicole Hughes. Should have been massive, but never quite managed to hit the big time. Always fun live, though.
