Mountain: Live at the Felt Forum, New York, December 31, 1974

Mountain: Live at the Felt Forum, New York, December 31, 1974

This was most likely Mountain's very last show with the "original" lineup, recorded on New Year's Eve 1974 at the NYC Felt Forum within the Madison Square Garden complex.
Though formed in 1969, Mountain first disbanded in February 1972 after a tour of the UK. After West, Bruce & Laing and Leslie West's Wild West Show in June and July 1973, Felix Pappalardi and Leslie West reunited and hired Bob Mann and Alan Schwartzberg for a Japanese tour in August 1973.
At the beginning, this might have been regarded as a one-off undertaking. However, this tour yielded the Twin Peaks double album that was originally planned as a Japanese-only release but was released worldwide in 1974. Alas, the Japanese shows and this resulting album did not represent Mountain adequately by any means.
After the tour, West insisted that Corky Laing be part of the band if they were to continue. Pappalardi agreed but demanded in return - much to West's dismay - that the band took on David Perry as an additional guitarist (to avoid the Mountain look and not sound too much like Cream [he had produced three albums for the group]). It seemed the band's original organ player, Steve Knight, was not considered.
In a nutshell, this four-piece toured from late 1973 to September 1974, and recorded the band's last album, Avalanche, in January 1974. The few existing recordings from this period showed a revitalized band with some refreshing new and up-to-the-mark material.
After their September 1974 tour, it seemed West finally succeeded in convincing Pappalardi to condense the band to his favourite trio format. Pappalardi obviously gave in and it was left to West to phone Perry to give him the bad news. Perhaps it was already decided at this point that their autumn/winter 1974 tour would be the band's farewell which may have made it easier for Pappalardi to actually concede.
The band kicked off their last tour on October 3, 1974 with a phenomenal show at NYC's Radio City Music Hall. Fortunately there is a decent audience recording of this in circulation and it's worth getting hold of. On this tour, Mountain were the main act when they played mid-sized venues and, for larger venues, they were the support act, for instance, they supported new stars the J Geils Band.
One can only hope that West was indeed happy on this tour - at least, this recording demonstrates a still extra-tight band. They even came up with an otherwise not-to-be-found rendition of Ten Years After's I'm Going Home, perhaps a nod to their colleagues (both bands often appeared in festivals together) who were also, at that time, on the verge of splitting.
The sound quality for this recording is superb, it's a first generation off-the-master copy, and it's a complete recording of the show. Close listening reveals that it must be an audience recording but it is indeed so well recorded that one may mistake it for a soundboard tape. The late Rich Demartino, a long-time friend of West - and who was close to the band from the very beginning - was in possession of this show. (Hope he is having a good time up there with Felix!) As he told this reviewer in 1996, he regarded this recording so highly that he had tried to sell it to Sony - which owned Mountain's Windfall Records catalogue - as an official release. However, that did not materialize.

Enjoy Mountain at their last and "creamy" peak! - Thomas Schmid

Comments:
Sting opened for The Grateful Dead several times in 1993. On May 15-16, 1993 he opened for the Dead at the Sam Boyd Silver
Bowl in Las Vegas. Audience tapes of these performances have always been available but it was not until Fall 2002 that
soundboards of these shows began to surface. The good news is that both shows sound terrific - there is a wonderful depth
to the music and the vocals and instruments are very well balanced. The bad news is that the soundboards for both shows are
incomplete. The May 15th soundboard does not include the last part of "When the World..." and "Every Breath You Take." The
May 16th soundboard does not include the opening track, "Blackbird." These remastered and complete versions contain an
audience patch for the missing tracks. Also, although I usually don't like to modify the music, I have made one minor
change. The opening of "Purple Haze" is botched in a manner that is both awful-sounding and dangerous to perfectly good
speakers and ear drums. I have taken the liberty of minimizing but not eliminating the offending passage.

Led Zeppelin: Orlando 1971

Led Zeppelin: Orlando 1971
[Genuine Masters, 2CD]
Live at the Civic Auditorium, Orlando, Florida, August 31, 1971
props to BigO
Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com

"Interestingly, I've just got a bootleg from a gig in Orlando and in between every song I'm playing all these riffs. Somebody played it to me and I thought, Crikey, they're really good riffs! They never got used again, but they just came out on the spur of the moment. It was such an inspiring time, playing with inspired people, and we were all absolutely on top of it."
- Jimmy Page, Guitarist Magazine (12/12/03)

There are three versions of this show in circulation: Welcome To Disneyland Part 1 And 2 (Lemon Song) is an incomplete audience recording. Florida Sunshine: Orlando Magic (Empress Valley) is a nearly-complete soundboard with the missing gaps filled with an audience recording. Then there is Orlando: You Really Got Me (Genuine Masters). The latter is a DVD release (photo stills as a slideshow) and is also a nearly-complete soundboard with the missing gaps filled with an audience recording. The sound is generally excellent.

According to Jules McTrainspotter on http://uuweb.led-zeppelin.us, the sound on the DVD is more 'natural', that is, the sources have not been EQ'd to the extent that Empress Valley like to do it... and the blend between the two sources [soundboard and audience] is seamless. There is also excellent stereo seperation between both left and right speakers, quite distinct in What Is And What Should Never Be."

Listening to the show today, one would hardly raise the eyebrow at Black Dog, Stairway To Heaven and Going To California - for these have become Led Zep classics and staples. But imagine the excitement of the Orlando audience - for many it would be the first time they were hearing these tracks which would make their appearance on the legendary Led Zeppelin IV album (released in November 1971). Stairway To Heaven was so new that Robert Plant had to introduce it!

But what fans recall and really miss from this show is the presence of drummer John Bonham - from his exchanges with Jimmy Page and the "fat" sound of his drumming.

First night in Buenos Aires of the last two shows ever with the *Old* GNR.
The second night 93-07-17 was the last concert ever with the *old* Guns N´Roses.
One of the best concerts and recordings ever.
The acoustic guitar part in the middle of the show and the Piano/Guitar version of November Rain are really amazing.
Great acoustic cover of the Rolling Stones song Dead Flowers.
This is my favourite GNR show ever. Even beats The Ritz 88 show.
This is a concert every GNR fan should have.
Just my opinion ;)
I added 2 bonus tracks from Buenos Aires 92 because they are incomplete.
It´s welcome To The Jungle and Don´t Cry.

Elton John: Live in Tokyo, Japan, October 1, 1971.

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com

from BigO [no label, 2CD]

Since Singapore banned long-haired rockers back in the '70s, most of them headed to Japan or Australia where rock music has a 40-year history. This Tokyo show was Elton's debut in Japan and, judging by the performance and reception, he left a lasting impression.

Interestingly, Elton back then would play solo for the first set. Then his band of just drums and bass would come on. He would do many obscure songs like It's Me That You Need, Rock Me When He's Gone, Come Down In Time, Skyline Pigeon and Friends, all rarely performed live.

If you pick up Elton's bootlegs of outtakes called The Dick James Sessions, in three volumes, you can see how much he recorded and left off his albums. This is something new indie singer-songwriters might want to reflect on. Less is oftentimes more.

Also, back then new talent would pad their shows like they sometimes do today, with covers. Here Elton performs three covers - Honky Tonk Women, Elvis' My Baby Left Me and Jerry Lee Lewis' Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On. But to Elton's credit, you don't really care for them. It's his own material that you want to hear.

What you have in this show is a preview of his Madman Across The Water album done live. Unfortunately no Tiny Dancer or Levon. The show is marvelous if recorded a bit shrill and sometimes the vocals are over enthusiastic and off color. The recording is a soundboard and in stereo. A nice one for fans of early Elton John.

Pink Floyd: 18th July 1970 Blackhills Garden Party (The Lost Tape!!)

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com
Pink Floyd: 18th July 1970 Blackhills Garden Party, Hyde Park Free Concert, Hyde Park, London

Well here it is at last the lost tape from the 18th July Hyde Park 1970 - this is the genuine article.

01 Blues
02 The Embryo
03 Green Is The Colour
04 Careful With That Axe, Eugene
05 Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun

I was contacted by the guy who taped the show and this is a transfer direct from his master tape.
The transfer was carried out as follows: -
The transfer was made on 10th September 2005 from the master BASF L-C60 cassette
Transfer made as follows: -
Nakamichi ZX-7 cassette deck.
Manual adjustment to height and azimuth of playback head to match that of the original tape recorder and to optimise the sound.
Direct connection to analogue input of Audiophile 2496 soundcard via high quality Clicktronic interconnects with 24K gold plugs.
Recording made to Wav file at 44.1kHz
I fixed a few pop's so that I could normalise the recording but apart from that this is an unaltered version of this show. The sound quality ranges from good to very good, there are some microphone "nudge" noises and some wind noise.

The show was recorded using a mono Phillips cassette recorder with a microphone mounted on a 6 foot pole. The taper, David, was sat about 100 meters from the stage to the left of center. Overall the recording quality is mostly very good. Some wind noise is picked up by the microphones and also the quality of the sound changes due to wind "blowing the sound around". Occasionally there is a little distortion
but really nothing to complain about considering how this show was taped.

Comments: Entire show, without breaks between songs. A very nice, complete recording, especially for an early Animals Tour show. There is some hiss that could be cleaned up without difficulty, but I've chosen to leave it as is.

Led Zeppelin: Earl's Court 1975 *Two Shows* Soundboard*7CDs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Led Zeppelin - Earl's Court May 24, 1975
The most famous of the five nights at Earls Court, largely because it has long been available in a near complete soundboard recording. The many releases used a combination of the video soundtrack and a proper soundboard source tape. However this was incomplete, running for only 180 minutes. Several years ago Celebration released the 4CD Odysseus, which should and could have been much better. More soundboard tape was used (in Dazed and Confused and for Moby Dick), but there were still gaps in the acoustic section which should have been filled by the audience source. Recently however even more of the soundboard source tape appeared, and this was used by Watch Tower for their 4CD release To Be A Rock And Not To Roll. The gaps were carefully filled with an excellent audience tape. Unfortunately, like so many of Watch Tower's releases, this was again spoilt by numerous digital 'clicks' and 'ticks'. Empress Valley rush released the 4CD He Must Be Dazed And Confused to counteract this. The sound quality is similar to Watch Tower, perhaps a very small improvement, but the big gain is in the strength of Robert Plant's voice, which is much louder and clearer in this new version. Again the gaps have been filled with an excellent audience tape.

Led Zeppelin - Earl's Court May 25, 1975
This release is undoubtably the most important and exciting release of an Earls Court concert for a very long time. A virtually complete soundboard source tape has been discovered, and used to dramatic effect. In fact the sound quality rivals the previous night, it is simply superb. Again the gaps have been filled with the audience tape (the end of No Quarter and parts of the acoustic section are missing from the soundboard and have been filled with the audience recording). Thank goodness Empress Valley did not repeate their complete howler as they did for the New York 29th July 1973 soundboard release (Grand Finale), by using the previous night's soundboard to fill the gaps. Therefore this last night, all 222 minutes of it, is destined to become a classic, much sought after by fans. Wishing to capitalize on this Empress Valley subsequently released the last night as a seperate 4CD set called The Zeppelin Express Physical Rocket.

The title comes of course from the fact this was a concert in benefit for former Soft Machine frontman Robert Wyatt who had broke his spine recently (he fell from a 3rd floor window during a party). Very last concert of that 1973 year for PF, before their 74 French tour. Last time a tune from the soundtrack of La Vallée was played. OBC here runs veeeeery slow, but it is not the tape, they played it like that! Really worth to get for OBC/When you're in, since those are the best versions in terms of SQ and probably performance too.

Released on label Ganja, #14, the SQ is EX-. Lineage: AUD[LOW]>SILVER CD>CDR
