OU: This is the notoriously unlistenable 2nd Set of the Colmar 1974 show. Unlistenable because all versions circulating suffer from horrible speed fluctuations due to dying batteries. All versions except this one, which }{eywood actually managed to correct in such a way that it's become listenable. No mean feat. It's been transferred at relative high volume and it's low end heavy, plus there are traces of noise reduction and still a few speed fluctuations present.
The recorder gets fumbled with in spots resulting in muffling of the sound, mic problems, a few skips and dropouts but the recording is pretty good, I'd give it a VG+. Someone who attended the show confirmed Careful With That Axe, Eugene being played as encore but it's not been recorded for obvious reasons.
The track by track speed correction process induced small digital gaps at the track transitions (also known as index clicks) and there were two digital gaps during songs, one during Us And Them and another during Any Colour You Like.
I corrected those. }{eywood should be given all credit however as he's the one who's put all the work into this, all the time I've spent with it is about an hour or so.

}{eywood's original comments: This is set 2 of the notorious Colmar gig that speeds up throughout, presumably due to the taper's batteries dying at the gig. The source for this was a low generation cassette that I traded for in the early 90s and held on to even though it was unlistenable. About 5 years ago I finally digitized it and speed corrected it by tuning sections of it to my son's bass guitar. This is not the Harvested source. Because it's from a tape I can't swear it sports the same quality as the other versions floating around, but I was asked to seed it so here it is. The speed is still not 100% perfect, but its quite listenable.

Led Zeppelin: San Francisco 1969 (Two Nights Various Sourced) FLAC

When Led Zeppelin II was released Led Zeppelin toured the US for several weeks. This was their fourth unique tour and was the first to include major venues such as the Boston Garden and Carnegie Hall. This trip ended in the city of some of their wildest, and best documented, performances on their first two tours. Zeppelin played three shows at the Winterland Ballroom with Issac Hayes and Roland Kirk. They made their first apperance at Winterland in April and these three would be their final shows at the venue.
The first two nights, November 6th and November 7th, were taped from the audience and have been in circulation, but the last night is still missing. November 6th has two good tapes and the November 7th has one. Final Winterland on TCOLZ collects together all three tapes from low gens together for the most complete collection of these shows available in one title.
This is the final TCOLZ title to be manufactured before shutting down and is available in less quantities than the others. It’s a shame since they catered to the hardcore collector. Their mistakes are outnumbered by the number of quality releases that stand at or near definitive for their respective shows.
Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA - November 6th, 1969
Discs one and two of Final Winterland contains the older of the two tapes for the November 6th show. It is a fair but distant audience recording containing the complete concert. It was released before on Blow Up (Immigrant IM-029~30), Punk (Tarantura T2CD-8) and its European clone End of ‘69 (Whole Lotta Live WLL007/8), and Room 2/3 (Image Quality IQ-019/20/21) where it is paired with the second night. It is also used as filler to complete the better sounding second audience source on Winterland Party (Wendy Records WECD-23/24) and Something Else (Tarantura TCD-91-1, 2).
The sound, compared to Tarantura, isn’t as loud but is clear enough. There are cuts at 3:28 in “I Can’t Quit You,” a small cut at 11:38 in “Dazed And Confused” and one directly afterwards, at thirty-eight seconds and again at 8:38 in “White Summer,” a cut at 2:13 in “How Many More Times.”
Discs three and four contain the more clear and enjoyable recording that surfaced in 1999. This was first released on the CDR title C’Mon Everybody (House Of Elrond). Both of the prior silver pressings, Winterland Party (Wendy Records WECD-23/24) and Something Else (Tarantura TCD-91-1, 2) use this tape as a base and the first tape source for “What Is And What Should Never Be” and for Plant’s stage banter before “Heartbreaker,” “Dazed And Confused” and audience noise before the encore.
Final Winterland is the first silver pressing of this tape without the filler. There is a small cut after “Dazed And Confused,” a big cut after “White Summer” which eliminates all but the final ninety seconds of “What Is And What Should Never Be,” and cuts after “Moby Dick” and “How Many More Times.” Like with the first tape source, compared to Tarantura it isn’t as loud but is very clear and enjoyable.
The beginning of the tape has Robert Plant (not Bill Graham) nervously addressing the audience before the show starts. “Good Evening. It’s very nice to return again to San Fransisco. We’d like to try and… rather than say that, and give you a load of bullshit. We’d rather like to try and show you through what we’re gonna do now. So let’s go…” The “Good Times/Bad Times” riff is one of the heaviest openings Zeppelin used, but it is destined to be only a interim between “Train Kept A Rolling” and “We’re Gonna Groove.” The audience are much more quiet in these shows compared to the first two tours.
Afterwards Plant says, “Thank you very much. Everybody feel alright? Tonight we intend if possible to do some things off the new Led Zeppelin II album. This is the first one. It’s called Heartbreaker.” The song’s sledgehammer riff sounds great leading off side two of the LP, but even at this early stage Page softens it with a lead in note to build some momentum. The middle solo already has changed from the recorded version, but they keep the song to just about five minutes. “What Is And What Should Never Be” and “Moby Dick” are the only other songs from the new album played and not, curiously enough, “Whole Lotta Love” which received most airplay at the time.
The show concludes with an epic twenty minute version of “How Many More Times.” There are hints of The Yardbirds “Over Under Sideways Down” and a short medley of “Boogie Chillun’,” “Bottle Up And Go” and “Hideaway.” The encores are the double shot of Eddie Cochran tunes “C’Mon Everybody” and ”Something Else.” John Paul Jones said in an interview once this was common in those days, although only a handful of recordings managed to capture this.
Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA - November 7th, 1969
The second night in Winterland, and the final taped show, exists on a very good audience recording of most of the show. The taper attended the previous evening’s show, naming the songs before they are played and making sure he has enough tape to capture the long songs. He was very close to the stage and picks up much detail but hits the pause button several times during “Dazed And Confused” and “How Many More Times” and at other points scattered throughout the show to check his tape. He also misjudged how much he would need since it runs out twelve minutes into “How Many More Times” during “The Hunter” eliminating the rest of that song and the encores.
There is also some tape deterioration during “White Summer.” November 7th is also the rarest of the four Winterland shows, previously available on Winter Of Our Content (Missing Link ML-008/9) and Room 2/3 (Image Quality IQ-019/20/21), and most recently on Heartbreaker (Tarantura TCD-92-1, 2) in the Good Old Led Zeppelin boxset.
The introduction is cut out and the tape starts at the “Good Times Bad Times” introduction leading into a heavy “Communication Breakdown.” Before the new song “Heartbreaker” there is some disturbance in the crowd. Plant says: “this is the second night out of three that…hang on a minute…yeah this is the second night out of three nights that we are spending in this place. That’s something like what over here you might call a head. This is the English equivalent. I just picked it up on stage with a question mark by it. So let’s try a couple things shall we? If we can get the people in the front to sit down a bit so the people behind can sit down. If everybody paid the same bread to get in then everybody’s entitled to see exactly what they want to see. So this brings us to ah, hang on, we don’t want an out and out riot. This is really uncalled for. Come on. Anyway, this is a thing off the new album.”
It’s performed as it was the previous night with a one-note introduction and a completely improvised guitar solo in the middle. “Dazed And Confused” is “something from a long time ago, perhaps nine months ago.” Seventeen minutes the epic lasts and sounds slightly slower and deliberate in this show. Plant gets a bit mixed up at one of the breaks but avoids catastrophe.
After a long “White Summer” they play “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” for the final (recorded) time. It is assumed to be played the following night and then dropped forever, only to be resurrected almost thirty years later in the Page & Plant era. It being dropped is strange since it is still a compelling live piece and even seems to have evolved since the spring. Plant even throws in a verse of Neil Young’s “Down By The River” in the middle. “Thank you. Good Evening. This is a thing that sort of carries on a little bit, and this is on the second album. This is a thing called ‘But What is and What Should Never Be’” is Plant’s puzzling introduction.
Jimmy Page plays with an infectious lyricism not present in many versions of this song. The set ends with and intense “How Many More Times.” It is a shame the tape cuts out since, judging by the length of the first night, almost half of the song is missing. The first half’s guitar solo is again very melodic as it builds into “The Hunter.” The cut eliminates the rest of the song and the encores, which were probably “C’Mon Everybody” and “Something Else.”
Final Winterland is packaged in a fatboy jewel case which carries the six disc. The cover artwork has a boarder on top, something lacking in previous TCOLZ titles. Overall this is another very highly recommended title for the Led Zeppelin completist who wants the definitive collection from their final US tour in 1969. The label goes out on a high note with this release.

From site: Another one of those shows where it seems to be a touch better than a VG+, but not quite the EX- rating. After listening to this show in its entirety I really enjoyed the fact all instruments can be heard quite clearly and are mixed rather well. The band seems to be into their performance and having fun during their 3rd night in Toronto. There are your normal splices because of tape flipping, but nothing is cut from the show. Alex once again plays his little ditty at the beginning of La Villa and they also continue to do the reggae style Working Man. As in night #2 the sound can be a bit muffled a few times, but nothing to distract from the show. One great show worth having if you love the Moving Pictures Era!

I interviewed Alan White in Milano a few months after this show (with Jon Anderson making funny jokes to him while he was speaking) and he seemed very pleased with the result and having a very good time. This document is almost 20 years old already! enjoy!

OU: this is a salvage from the original Bertha 1 computer, back when successful burns of CD were not as reliable as successful rocket launches. Bertha 1 was victim of a crash landing, but the CD she bore of this was not glitchy, saving me a new transfer. this one almost slipped through the cracks, but I caught it, just before it could be forgotten all over again for another 29 years. It's an inspired show
(I'm sure selling out 2 shows this night pleased them), Boston is an XTC appreciating town. etree lists a show on Jan 29 and another Jan. 30, ironically only the 29th one has a setlist of any kind and I believe it matches this show. They only played the 2 shows in 1 night and WBCN broadcast the late one. I haven't heard of any FM recording (or any recording) of the early show, it if exists that would be an aud.
XTC has a live release from London Dec. 22, 1980. it does not include any of this show.

OU: When it comes to bootleggers, there is nothing I hate more than them making money off of starving fans. What Nothing Songs has done is exactly that. Several of their "releases" were actually downloaded from THIS site! So, this is a big SCREW YOU to Nothing Songs.
As for this set, the sound is really excellent. There are some very slight flaws in the recording...an edit here and there (first couple of seconds of Sweet Jane are cut), but nothing that makes this less than a superb soundboard recording. However, there are some dropouts during the soundcheck.
Unfortunately, Lou's voice is WAY in front of everything else. I never liked the Reunion gigs. A seminal noise-art-punk influence had decayed into a pop band. Listen to Disc 1/Track 1 for a perfect example of what I mean. I can't fault any of 'em for cashing in on their legacy, but I still refused to pay to go see 'em live in 1993. Everything sounds so crisp and clean...as if meant to be played on the radio! Yikes!!
I will say that Cale sounds great as usual (especially his piano on ATP) and Sterl's guitar lines sound as perfect as I have heard on any VU recording from the 60's. Moe is simply...Moe! Lou's voice sounds great (compared to today), but his phony banter with the audience is nauseating. I remember reading how before the reunion gigs, Lou was frustrated with the sound he was getting from his guitar on "I'm Waiting for The Man." He just couldn't get it to sound as powerful as on the records. Moe had to remind him that he used to ONLY hit the strings on the downstroke during that song!
I love the rolling country guitar during "I'll Be Your Mirror," but damn, will Lou shut up at the end of "Rock & Roll?!?!" Shut the F@'a2K up and play!! (crap, I just quoted Zappa in a Lou post) Cale's voice is pretty true to the originals.
Granted, a bunch of middle-aged people aren't going to sound as ferocious playing live as when they were 20 (aside from The Stooges...maybe), but this is a fantastic document of the Reunion Tour. I'm willing to say that it is better than the official release, which Lou personally oversaw. Go figger.

This is not for everyone, for me it´s a no-brainer, as we have very few 1977-boardtapes, but the quality is "special".

From the boxset´s liner notes:
"The Orlando show was originally recorded in binaural with the band and orchestra on the right channel and the piano on the left channel. Elvis´ voice is almost inaudible on this recording. To bring back Elvis´ voice in the foreground the most sophisticated software to date has been used. Otherwise, this show would have been lost forever!!!"

A this and that, you're (almost) there production.

OU comments: This is a full show (no tape flip cuts) from the peak of Cheap Trick's popularity, fresh on the heels of "Live at Budokan" and Heaven Tonight studio release. The band and crowd is full of energy this night and even when the bass amp blows out they fix it and carry on with the many big hits they had at this time. This recording comes from the front row of the balcony.
It has been circulated on tape before, but this is the 1st time I have uploaded it. I do not know if the fellow with the master cassettes has ever uploaded anything. I have used some EQ on this to boost the high and low end a little, and some ICPVR (individual clap peak volume reduction) to help with the crowd noise, and being in the balcony helped keep the screaming crowd noise bearable. I think anyone who likes Cheap Trick will enjoy hearing this recording. Alot of the songs heard in the live album from Japan are heard here from Boston before a packed house.
I cut out some of the encore break applause to make sure this fit on 1 CD but nothing else was cut out and nothing has been speed adjusted. From walkon to walkoff, you hear every note and word of a classic concert, said by a contact of mine many years ago with over 200 Cheap Trick shows that this is one of the best shows they've done. It's the only Cheap Trick show I've ever seen, and I've only heard a few others on disc or tape, but considering I used to think this band was the epitome of trash rock, but didn't think so after seeing this, it must have been a pretty good concert. The guy with the master tapes bought me tickets to the show in exchange for helping him get a tape so I wasn't expecting to have much fun at all at the show, but I enjoyed it, the crowd enjoyed it and were patient during the bass problem being fixed, and Cheap Trick seemed to enjoy it alot. I hope you all enjoy it too. Do not sell this recording.

A Flashback Picture

Those of you that have been around here a while recall the B&W photo of an Afro-headed me strumming my Gibson Les Paul.

Here is a color pic of my older brother in front of my stereo (the same one that I stood alongside in the formerly mentioned picture).
This was my stereo when I was in 10th grade (1977-78). It even included an echo/reverb device and a second amplifier so I could get "surround sound".

I am sure that my parents loved four speakers in a 10'X13' room being cranked by two amplifiers. Thus the Koss Pro 4AAA headphones (wired but not shown) were a necessary accessory.

The machine gun? It was my brothers and yes, it worked.

OU: Overall, a good to very good sounding disc. Tracks 1 - 10 are from various radio performances with some nice acoustic versions of some songs including three different versions of "On Your Own", and two versions of "The Drugs Don't Work". Tracks 11 - 15 sound like they come from audience sources as the sound is a little muddy, and you can hear some chatter in the background, but it is nothing too major.
This bootleg disc is also known by the name of "Urban Live". They are both the exact same disc.

OU: Here is the master tape of the Chicago gig from early in Neil Young's "Harvest/Time Fades Away" American Tour of 1973. This three-month odyssey started on January 5, 1973 in Milwaukee. The setlist here is noticeably different than the recently posted Seattle March 17, 1973 show and features a number of songs that were dropped later in the tour. As such, this Chicago concert provides a nice contrast to Seattle. "LA" is performed here on acoustic guitar, rather than the electric version featured in the Seattle show. In addition, Kenny Buttrey also adds a distinctive difference on the drum parts. I rate this show VG+ in sound quality. Like Seattle, I think it's another of the better-sounding shows from this tour. None of these Chicago tracks appear on the "Time Fades Away" album. Song samples provided. Enjoy.
