The gig was very private, tickets weren't sold to the general public and most of the Stones fans living in London had no idea that it was taking place. The performances tend to have a loose, casual, informal quality. The Stones treated their Marquee Club appearance like an after-hours jam session, and a healthy sense of fun prevails on "Satisfaction," "Midnight Rambler," "Brown Sugar," and other favorites.

Comments: There is a good deal of hiss, but overall an enjoyable disc. A great On The Run Improv, TGGITS uses the preacher tape. Us and Them is unfortunately cut right at "Forward he cried..." (at just about the 30 minute mark -- I guess it was originally recorded on a 60 minute tape) and resumes at "...cheese and a slice...". There are also a few occasions where the lyrics are almost indistinguishable from the instruments and the background tapes. Standard orchestrated AHM sounds great. One last curiosity is that the Artist and Album listed on the disc is The Architectural Abdabs "Moon Atom". -jeff

OU notes: JEMS master recording. This is an excellent sounding recording. This is one high energy set, Rod Price's slide work sounds like a race engine on speed. Foghat opened for The Faces this night and this show captures a middle of road rock act that had been gigging almost nonstop since their first tour(this is the main reason Tony Stevens left the band around this time) just on the cusp of breaking out in big way. Later in the year Foghat would release Fool In The City which would bring them their biggest success of their career with songs like Fool For The City and Slow Ride. This year also featured the first of many lineup changes for Foghat, we are unsure if the switch of bass players happened this early in 75 or not but did happen by the time they started recording Fool For The City.

OU: This has always been one of my favorite Phish shows; in fact, it introduced me to the band. (I'd actually heard Fee, Sample In A Jar, Limb By Limb, and Heavy Things before and loved them; they came as filler songs in iTunes when I got my iBook - I never realized that this was the same Phish, though.) I was a huge Pink Floyd fan, massive collector of bootlegs, and this always kept popping up in other collectors' trade lists. A jam band from the 90s covering DSotM, without a saxophone, synth, or backup singers.
I'd heard the three incarnations of the album that existed; the studio version (faithfully reproduced on the post-Waters P*U*L*S*E album, Roger Waters' 2006-2008 tours, and kind of played with on the legendary 1974 Wembley BBC broadcast), the 1972 version (played live before the album's release, as just a four-piece; minus sax, synth, singers, et cetera), and the Easy Star All-Stars reggae version which doesn't actually count but it's worth mentioning.
How would a 1998 Vermont jam band tackle it? It was worth the effort of getting the tape.
Phish's take on it was, although I never realized it when I first heard it, perfectly Phishy. David Gilmour's classic rocky distortion-laced sound was perfectly translated into Trey Anastasio's thoughtful jazzy style, Rick Wright's Hammond was halfway replaced by Page McConnell's piano, Roger Waters' plunky bass was funked up by Mike Gordon, and Nick Mason's tape-delayed plodding was replaced by Jon Fishman's awesomeness. However, a few things were added that really took creativity; Dick Parry's sax was either removed or replaced with a swirly Hammond, and Claire Torry had her trademark wail replaced by Jon Fishman's OTHER trademark wail.
It was awesome, and so was the rest of the show.
I first heard the more common taper-section source. It was nice, certainly better than the kind of thing Pink Floyd collectors have to put up with (my favorite examples are the two audience recordings from early 1970 from Croydon and Birmingham; the only performances EVER of "The Violence Sequence", which didn't even show up in the studio, but it sounds AWFUL; take, say, 1986.4.1 and multiply it by ten)... but with all the sparkly-clean soundboards and Live Phish, I got spoiled and this amazing show dropped off of my hard drive. I did come across a second FOB source, which was more upfront and clear, but the bass was distorted and it was just overpowering.
Then I figured out my way around an audio editor and got into matrixes. One thing led to another, and I made this.
I know there are two other sources; one is the B&K 4011 recording, but it really didn't sound substantially different from Source One (and was a tiny bit worse). The other is an AKG480 that I have never heard and can't find anywhere.
This is my first attempt at a matrix and an eTree upload. I hope I didn't make any mistakes, and if anyone thinks they can improve on this, please do so.

OU: Here’s another decent recording dug out of Andy and Gary’s box-in-the-loft. This one, as usual, is previously uncirculated. I see from a couple of websites that there is a tape from this show being traded, but it’s certainly not this recording.
I can’t give much of a critique of the performance, I’m afraid. I saw the Bunnymen several times and taped them twice but I’m not really a great fan. I went on my own to this one and recorded it from the balcony, front row, dead centre. I took some pictures that night too. That’s right, I smuggled in a tape recorder, microphone, camera and huge lens. I felt like I was walking in wearing an astronaut’s suit. Still, I got away with it. I hope you like it. -andyh

Huge crowd, wild performenace and a happy band at the end, as you can hear from the interview. The band was once more back to Europe after the club tour in Feb - march but this time playing to massive crowds during festivals. Soundwise this is pure excellence.

There have been several releases of this concert over the years. The first were "MSG" (Imperial), and "Same Old Blues" (lun). These were later supplanted by remasters on other labels, such as this Stardust Productions remaster of the Imperial Release, and "Same Old Blues Definitive Master" (Playmen Music). Fan label 3BR also released "Slowhand in the Garden".
Here, presented for your listening enjoyment, is the Stardust Productions remaster, directly from the silvers.

OU: Here is a REAL gem. The performance and sound here are absolutely A+. Nothing else to say. Aside from the horrible DJ intro saying the band was spawned from the “San Francisco based” based Minutemen (with a horrible “YEAH!” after it), this is perfection…I must admit my guilty pleasure is saying “NO!” in my best lame DJ voice after she does it…;))…San FRANCISCO???...
I can’t find a true date fer this one, unfortunately, but judging from the fact that Gibby from the Butthole Surfers is in attendance (Watt dedicates “From One Comes One” to him), and some other shows around this time, April or May seem most likely.

OU: OK, it's back to the Isolar Tour (1976) and another Old Gold release, although this was looking very doubtful for quite a while. I traded this title with Cagey, and for some unknown reason all of the disks I've tried to rip from his trades have been particularly troublesome. It took around two and a half hours to rip each of the first tracks - maybe more, because I couldn't just sit there and watch it, but after that all of the other tracks ripped without any trouble. While I didn't see it happen, the EAC text file tells me so, but the first track of each disk had read errors and sync problems as well as several suspicious positions. I've listened to each of these tracks and they sound fine to me, so I'm hoping that some of you fellows here might like them also.
Sound quality is not perfect, but it's better than some of the 1974 torrents I've seeded, and also a bit better than some of the Wembley shows. The first concert has a little low end distortion, and also fluctuates between clear and muffled. I'm betting that the taper couldn't hold the mics up for too long. ;) While they're quite enjoyable to my ears, I'd probably suggest they're probably not something the casual Bowie fan might like, so please check a single file first if you have sound quality doubts.
So without any further ado, set your computer to do it's stuff, and enjoy. :-)
