On the cusp of the '70s, rock music was still a bubbly mixture of styles and ideas. You could record anything and there would be an audience and more importantly a record label willing to put it out.

Bob Dylan and The Band fired off Music From Big Pink and signalled a return to the "invisible republic" of the past when everything was simpler. This album more than any reportedly energised and inspired English musicians like Eric Clapton and George Harrison to look Westward and backwards.

Instead of rocking out like they did in 1966, Dylan and The Band slowed things into a country square dance. No exhortations to "play ****in' loud" instead, steel guitars, accordians and a crooning, bleating Dylan took to the stage and, by all accounts, only a selected enlightened few were mesmerised. Mostly, the show was considered under-rehearsed.

Incredibly, this performance was the first time Dylan stepped on stage after the motorcycle accident. Some were expecting the Second Coming as his appearance boosted attendence. On hand for this show was rock's royalty, The Beatles, two Stones, The Who, Free, Eric Clapton and, in the audience, a young Elton John.

This was the year the Beatles were to release Abbey Road, all "special effects" and stylish, the year Led Zeppelin II was launched and proto-heavy metal birthed. Instead, 100,000 fans at the Isle of Wight were treated to the countrified and loosely-played Like A Rolling Stone.

So how did it feel?

Now for the first time you can hear the almost-complete show from an astonishingly clear audience recording. The origin of this audience reel to reel tape was keithdylan who bought the master copy from a dealer/fan and decided to share it, warts and all on the net at the Hunger City site. Later it was mastered and artwork done by JTT, around October 2007. This cleaned up version deleted gaps, added fades and other little touches and was shared by eddiethecat. This is the cleaned up version. A big thanks for their generosity.

After the show, Dylan and the celebrities retired to a party where The Beatles played an acetate of their to-be-released Abbey Road. No one recorded Bob Dylan's reaction.

The "Pictures Of Pink Floyd" Restoration Project



This is IMO the most special Pink Floyd concert experience ever recorded. The quality and rarity of "The Librest Spacement Monitor" justifies all the hype, and at last you can hear it in the best possible manner.

Records were played on a Technics Sl-1200MK2 turntable, using a Layla 3G console directly into a Dell computer. There was no sound card used during the recording process (the Layla generates a virtual card). Music recording was directly processed by Sound Forge 6.0. Too much high-quality percussion existed within the recordings to use a vinyl restoration suite. A digital spot remover was used manually to remove the larger clicks and crackles, then an automatic remover was used afterwards. Results were real-time compared with the raw wav file, both by monitoring from the computer, and by auditioning a test-pressing on a home-theatre system. Unfortunately, there was a major flaw found in the vinyl on side one at around the 5:15 mark. That was 'jiggled' as much as possible after rerecording the entire side and starting over.

Side Four (Pictures Vol 2, Side Two) presented special problems. As is generally known, the recording of Atom Hear Mother starts out fine, but gradually gets faster and faster. A map was made by consensus, of the many pitch changes relative to the beginning of the piece. Unfortunately, it isn't just a linear speed change, where it would be easy to "just slow it down". The pitch of known musical interludes was manually compared and adjusted via the Sound Forge "pitch bend" and "pitch shift" functions. It quickly got confusing and very complicated to do all the changes relative to one another, and about 15 seconds could not be totally corrected. After a while, keeping any adherance to any form of zero crossing had to be discarded. This is because the pitch shift did not always occur during a zero crossing, and nothing could be done about it. Sometimes you will hear a zero-crossing noise during the speed corrections. The end product is not perfect, no one involved was totally happy with it. To do better would have required starting over again, and it might not be any better after finishing. It is listenable to, however and is a major improvement over the original recording. The very slight pitch change of the end relative to the beginning of Atom Heart Mother *may* be part of the original performance. This is a different version of this song than the version on Volume 1!

For you sticklers about original recordings, the original untouched fourth side is presented as track four

A small amount of noise reduction was used on all record sides. Fortunately, the lowest level of the sound recording is way above the lowest level of surface noise. A sample was made of "dead space", both before and after the recording. The lower volume level was used to remove noise. No EQ of any sort was used.

Finally, the end results were approved by consensus.

West, Bruce & Franco: Poughkeepsie 1987 (Soundboard)

After Mountain's comeback album and tour in 1985, Leslie West and Corky Laing parted ways again. In 1986, West teamed up with the just-reformed Bachman, Turner Overdrive on their tour supporting Van Halen who went out to promote their 5150 album. Since BTO had just recorded Mississippi Queen, he offered his services to play for free on this as an encore, just to be close to his friend Eddie Van Halen with whom he obviously indeed had a fantastic time on this tour.

Alas, it seems West didn't have plans to reassemble Mountain nor did he seem to have an album contract at that time or maybe he didn't even care. However, it may have interested a few record companies that he and Jack Bruce decided to record an album together. According to the liner notes on the 1988 album, Theme, it was obviously West's friend, Howard Stern, who came up with the idea of re-recording Theme For An Imaginary Western - and what better way than doing this with the very guy who wrote it?

Alas, for some reason, Laing was not available (or willing) to join which deprived fans of a veritable West, Bruce & Laing reunion - and finally a chance to hear their take of Theme - all the more as it was always a bit strange that WBL had never played it on stage when they were together for the first time from 1972 to 1973.

Anyway, they secured the services of ex-Good Rats (hailing from New York like West) and Twisted Sister drummer Joe Franco for another go at the power trio format. Thankfully, this band not only did the said studio album which was released in 1988, but even decided to play what seemed to be their only known show at Poughkeepsie's (in upstate NY) Chance Club in December 1987. Jack Bruce once stated that he even flew to the US from Europe just for this one show!

Two tracks from this show, Red House and Spoonful were (thankfully) included on the Theme album. Unfortunately, the latter was edited down heavily from about 14:30 mins to about 7:30 mins.

Luckily, about an hour of this show survived and got into circulation as an excellent quality tape - it seemed to be taken from the soundboard. This is not only an - for West, then - unusually bluesy set, but it also features many songs WBL had played. Alas, the tape cuts out after about an hour, so it doesn't contain Red House or Sunshine Of Your Love, which is probably what they closed their set with. Still, it comes with the "uncut" Spoonful which alone is worth the price of admission. The bottom line is that this show may be considered a highlight in West's career in the '80s. - Thomas Schmid

Grand Funk Railroad: Live At The Forum 1974 (Soundboard)

In the early 70's, there was nothing but derision written in reviews by locals who listened to Grand Funk Railroad albums. They had stepped on the toes of music fans who grew up on blues rock. But the Funk were raw rock and rollers. You can hear that on Footstomping Music here.

While Grand Funk could play to large audiences, rock critics still put them down. Didn't Lester Bangs? In an attempt to establish cred, Grand Funk Railroad shortened their name to Grand Funk, removed their sevengli Terry Knight, and added keyboard player Craig Frost. They also jettisoned their raw sound in favour of a produced album. Todd Rundgren was hired and actually produced two hits for the group, "We're An American Band" (from We're An American Band) and "The Loco-Motion" (from Shinin' On). The latter was a pop cover, something of a first. They got nowhere with rock critics and elitist music fans.

What could not be denied was their appeal especially live. They opened shows with that 2001 theme song - Thus Spake Zarathustra [check out Live Album II live in Osaka, 1971], the one Elvis used. They imitated Cream's powerhouse trio lineup. They were much younger and muscular and macho. There was your likely answer. Grand Funk were a generation gap band between older rock fans and younger rock fans.

Here is a show caught in that transitional time bubble in full flight as a pop rock band. Lengthy songs are banished in favor of crunchy rock star poses. The only survivors are the instrumental T.N.U.C. and the lengthy Inside Looking Out. Members of Wet Willie are said to have joined in on Loco-motion.

In the end, Grand Funk never did understand credibility. They evolved and lost it. Grand Funk needn't have worried about record sales or empty halls. That wasn't a problem. They just didn't trust enough in themselves. Unlike say The New York Dolls who never sold many records or played in front of millions. The Dolls did what they wanted to do and nevermind their critics who said they couldn't play. At least the Dolls were influential.

As far as we can tell, this show seems to be sourced from a circulating pro-shot video but said video has not had an official release. A boot DVD is on sale at some websites for US$12. This show was shared by anthony at Hunger City. Thanks. The "original" boot CD cover claims this show is "live in San Diego".

This is the best quality, most complete version of this show available to date.
This is one of Robert Plant's best performances.
TMP notes that this may be the first recording of Celebration Day played live, maybe even the first time played live.
Black Dog is exceptionally good on this night (both Jimmy & Robert are on fire)
Robert doesn't quite yet know the order of the verses in Stairway.

Points of this release that are of note:
1) Much less hiss. Better transfer.
2) SIBLY is complete, for the first time.

This is the final night of a week-long residency. The official 24 Nights is taken from the Feb 9 show.

According to the Eric Clapton Bootography: The sound quality is superb and not from the FM broadcast that was the source of so many of the other versions of this show. The quality is better than the Yellow Cat release. Here there is no "error" in the orchestral introduction, and many of the orchestral instruments are better mixed providing a better balance between EC and orchestra. A truly excellent recording!

A fan who has a Golden Star release of this show said his version "runs just a bit fast." Meanwhile another fan who has heard this show commented: "No speed or pitch issues on this version. Sound quality is superb."

Jimi Hendrix Experience: Denver Pop Festival 1969

Live at Mile High Stadium, Colorado, June 29, 1969


This was the last concert by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and it was marred by a riot just after the performance as fans rushed the stage and the band was whisked away to a waiting van to be taken to safety. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

According to the Jimi Hendrix website, "immediately afterwards, Noel Redding elected to leave the group and returned to London. Redding cited Hendrix's stated desire to expand the group without consulting him as one of the factors influencing his decision."

A month later, Hendrix would appear at Woodstock with his large Gypsy Sun and Rainbows band with Billy Cox replacing Redding on bass. Who knows what might have been had Redding not thrown a rock star tantrum.

By this time, The Experience were a major attraction and in the same constellation as the other artists at the Denver Festival including Johnny Winter, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Poco, Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention, Iron Butterfly, Tim Buckley, and Big Mama Thornton.

This audience recording is taken from a first generation copy of the master tape and has been speed-corrected by the ATM collective.

Jimi Hendrix Experience: Cologne 1969

There is apparently a proper recording of this show recorded for the German TV program Beat Club. The band played two shows with Eire Apparent on this date. This show was once offered as a free stream on the Jimi Hendrix website. It has since been removed and there has been no info whether it will ever be released.
This version is an audience recording. The Studio Du Monde was a book and record shop so the recording is in-your-face close. It has been mastered to mono as the left channel was faulty. Due to the age of the tape and the weak battery during the recording, pitch-correcting was done as best as possible by the collectors at Archived Traders Material [ATM].
A confident and seasoned Experience play this set in front of a loyal audience. No surprises, just a well-played gig. A rare song, Come On, is played here.
