The "Cry Of Love" band played two shows at the University of Oklahoma. Thankfully the second show was recorded by a fan, Lee Agnew, who snuck in a tape recorder. This show took place four days after the Kent State shootings that killed four students protesting the Vietnam War. While Hendrix was not in the same league as Phil Ochs in the anti-war movement, he was socially aware.

On this evening, Hendrix charged into Machine Gun with a powerful interpretation of this heavy tune.

The crowd loved it. This show was like a tribute to fallen comrades. There's a strong sense of purpose here. Hear My Train A Comin' and Message To Love followed before Jimi settled down to play his popular blues Red House and then close the evening with Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze, and Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

The sound of this recording is a bit distant but still clear and distinct. This ATM version is different from the Cherokee Nation boot [ATM 052] in that diginoise has been eliminated and the pitch corrected.

This show featured the trio of Hendrix, Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell who were then recording the never completed Cry Of Love album.

Procol Harum: British Biscuit 1976 London Radio Show

Formed in the '60s, the group had been together for almost 10 years and Procol Harum had just released their ninth album - simply titled Procol's Ninth (1975). But for this 1976 London gig, only I Keep Forgetting was from the new album. By then guitar wiz Robin Trower had already left the group but Procol Harum did not sound like a spent force and keyboardist Gary Brooker still had a fine set of pipes (check out All This And More and A Salty Dog). There was still a lot of power left in the performance and one can only marvel at the gumption of the group (and possibly the surprise of the fans) when they moved from I Keep Forgetting to the Blue Danube to The Four Tops' I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) [titled as Sugar Honey in the artwork] and then on to A Whiter Shade Of Pale.
Probably recorded from a radio broadcast, the sound is excellent.
The 2004 reissues of Procol Harum's Exotic Birds And Fruit and Procol's Ninth included versions of the Blue Danube, which have been welcomed by the fans.

Manic Depression was one of those Italian labels that appeared at the end of the '80s selling hard-to-find live concerts on CDs for the first time. This was among the earliest CSNY CD bootlegs with a professionally designed cover and quite a nice selection of rarities all in very good sound.

The main part of this bootleg was a CSNY concert from June of 1970 that is supposedly at Lakehurst in New Jersey. It is a nice soundboard with very good to excellent sound.

The label wanted to showcase Neil Young's talents from the beginning and included early demos, work with his band The Squires and Buffalo Springfield. Whoever was the source offered pretty high quality tapes, the seven 1965 demos that Young will hopefully release on his archive set and even a couple of Buffalo Springfield acetates and demos.

Even Buffalo Springfield's performance at Monterey Pop, left off the official release, shows up here. This incomplete show has never been released even after 40 years. Only one track, For What It's Worth, was finally released in June 2007 on a Razor & Tie Monterey Pop collection.

The CSNY show has seven Young songs out of the show's 18. The Young medley of The Loner, Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River boasted his talent as guitarist and soloist. The 13-minute long Southern Man closed the show in fine hard rock tradition. With Neil Young, CSN gained a harder sound to offset their folky image.

Consider Tribute To Neil Young a fan's dream of what his archive release will be. This was a great start to the CD bootleg era. Thanks to the folks at Manic Depression, whoever you are.

Blind Faith: Compensation For Betrayal 1969

When Paddington released their six-disc anthology of well-known Blind Faith performances at the end of 2006, we were curious about the set's title, Compensation For Betrayal. We do not own an original copy and have not seen the artwork. So we can only speculate.

Just who was betrayed? Mojo magazine in a 1996 article suggests that it was the idea of the band, at the time a "supergroup" composed of two parts Cream, one part Traffic and Rick Grech of Family. Blind Faith, a name invented by Clapton, was supposed to be the precursor of the superstar bands which less than a decade later would reap tens of millions for their management and labels. Corporate rock was just an idea at this point.

But an unwieldly arrangement had Winwood managed by Chris Blackwell, while Clapton's manager was Robert Stigwood. Two heads were in this case not better but a source of conflict. Management wanted their new band to start playing and the label wanted a record. According to Winwood, there was no time for the four to gel first, rehearse together and write songs.

"Who would let a million-dollar-a-week potential in a band sit around and rehearse?" he asked.

The famous debut at Hyde Park proved their undoing. Nervous and without much chemistry, Blind Faith crumbled in front of 100,000 fans. At the end of the gig, you could hear fans calling for Cream. But Robert Stigwood was oblivious to this.

"They are going to make a lot of money in appearance and on records, and this concert was the best possible beginning. I am going to make a great deal of money out of it from the film and television rights all over the world," said Stigwood. The Hyde Park concert was finally released on DVD in 2006.

Stigwood committed the band to a brief European tour and a major US tour opening at Madison Square Garden. Of the European tour, the Gotoberg concert was recorded. Judging from quite a number of audience recordings of the US tour, there was much anticipation. But as Winwood has noted, Blind Faith were unrehearsed, had only one album of songs to play and needed Cream and Traffic tunes to fill up the set. Clapton has admitted as soon as the tour started, he was already thinking of how to leave the band.

Inside America, Blind Faith faced a dead end, playing Cream songs to please the fans. In effect, Blind Faith had betrayed themselves. The tour was a financial success but Blind Faith failed to win an audience for themselves.

The Blind Faith album cover was another betrayal of the idea of artistic freedom. The naked young girl with the silver winged jet was too much for America and orders were quickly cancelled. A quick reprint had the back cover of the band on the front, the naked girl banished from sight. Within a week of the change, the album was a gold record.

When the tour ended, so did the band. Blind Faith's short lifespan has never been properly archived by their record label. So Paddington's work is welcomed bringing together very good audience recordings, a compensation for betrayal.

The only quality soundboard in the set is on Disc One - the show in Sweden, just 11 days after Blind Faith's debut at Hyde Park as guests for the Rolling Stones. The entire Blind Faith album was played in Goteberg plus some other songs. Now you can have a taste of Blind Faith live.

This is what David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine wrote: "On December 14, 33 years after the album's release, (Lou) Reed opened a sold-out four-night stand at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York, performing the whole of Berlin live for the first time, with full orchestration... The story still thrills as it repels: the way Reed, with a poet's ear and a reporter's eye and no intruding moral comment, renders both artificial ecstasies (booze, speed, reckless sex) and real-life horror (beatings, blood on the sheets).
"But the most astonishing thing about hearing Berlin live was the greatest-hits glow of the songs. The arrangements, which sounded muted and crowded on the album's original, flimsy RCA pressing, bloomed in 3-D. The German beer-hall thump of Lady Day became an elephant-march heartbeat with guitarist Steve Hunter, who played on the album sessions, breaking out in fits of arena-rock shriek. In Caroline Says I, Reed countered the flirty melody and gently buoyant score with dry vocal cool. And when he got to Caroline Says II, Reed offset the escalating violence and emotional collapse with a tenderness, in the music and his singing, that made it a love song in all but the bruises."

And as reported in the New York Times, "Mr Reed has gathered a starry group of friends to help turn Berlin into a semitheatrical, multimedia performance. Julian Schnabel has created sets and will be filming the show, and Mr Schnabel's daughter, Lola, has shot film scenes with the French actress Emmanuelle Seigner, which will be projected onto the stage. Bob Ezrin, who produced the original album, will be doing musical direction with Hal Willner. The indie darling Antony [of Antony & The Johnsons] will appear with a children's choir and will also sing backup with Sharon Jones, queen of the local retro-soul scene."

For those into trivial pursuit, the show even incorporated the "lost minute" instrumental interlude heard on the cassette and eight-track tapes!

This is an impromptu, one-night-only kind of performance. Not sure who was originally performing that night, but by the end of the night, it was a historic evening. Dylan coaxes Fogerty into performing Proud Mary (which he didn't perform live for many, many years at that point). The sound on this disc is not great, but it's not bad either. You'll love the historic aspect of this disc.

Remarks: This is the Harvested reissue of Black Holes In The
Sky (known as Rev A.). Quite a bit of care and cleanup has
taken place to lower the number of known glitches on the Rev 0 release from 51 to 13 on disk 1 and from 77 to 13 on disk 2.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Raving And Drooling (Sheep), and You've Got To Be Crazy (Dogs) were unreleased at that time and the latter two especially were prototype pieces during this tour. Sheep and Dogs wouldn't appear in a studio form until about 3 years later.

This was also the debut tour for Mr. Screen (the big circle screen that Dave got to keep in the Pink Floyd 1987 LTD. settlement) and you can hear the audience reacting to the images being displayed at certain points during the show (mostly during the end of DS0TM).

This is another cd that I've listened to for years and the songs are in fact from the alternate or second night as it's called from their historic comeback performance on MTV (or Empty-V as I call it...).

Please listen at least once to this concert in headphones. Am I the only relic on the planet who still owns a pair and uses them? Some of the finest times that I can remember in my youth were spent studying all The Beatles albums while donning a pair of 'cans' to borrow the recording industry vernacular. For this particular gem you can clearly hear the boys tuning up, checking mics, and even turning to one another for support. Their insecurities on the one hand are understandable yet the other side of me screams "You guys are The Eagles for heaven's sake"!!! I believe that right after they lay down the first couple of tunes someone eerily says "we're back" in an attempt to lay to rest those same uncertainties about being able to start up the machine again (to quote Neil Peart).

Some of the highlights for me are:

o Right before 'The Best Of My Love' an enthusiastic fan screams "Hey Joe, how ya doin"??? To which a startled Walsh quips back "I'm freaking out man"!

o Towards the end of the show, I apologize for forgetting what track, a drunk female creates some commotion causing Glenn to chide that "he remembers his first beer, too". A wonderful line that I admit to have stolen and used a time or two in similar situations.

o The Great Don Henley (and neighbor to my parents who live in Dallas) flubbing the lyrics to 'Get Over It'. To hear his deadpan response post-song of "well I f^cked that up, but let's move along" is also worth the download of this set. It's chronicled for all to hear - Don Henley messed up!

o Favorite test of speaker separation? 'Life In The Fast Lane'. I present to you Joe Walsh in your left ear and Don Felder in your right. Stunning...

Bob Dylan & Tom Petty - True Confessions For Carol [2 CD's] (Speed Corrected) FLAC

This set has been previously released as Lonesome Town on the Japanese Watchtower label. However, Rattlesnake has corrected the problems that were evident on that release. The sound is more upfront and dynamic, and the mix (which was at times muddy, with distant vocals on Lonesome Town) is now perfect. To my ears, the tape speed problems are also absent. It's a full step up in quality from an already fine soundboard to an astounding one. It's a great performance, with Dylan rocking and rolling throughout. The vocals are powerful and commanding on every song. He's even quite talkative between numbers! The packaging is superlative (even for Rattlesnake) It's beautifully designed, and full of wonderful photos. The only gripe would be that the source is incorectly attributed to Adeladeon the back cover.
This is a must have disc, and comes very highly recommended.
